Hello David! I got Kali (with the GUI) up and running using this tutorial! I had to launch Kex just with "Kex" command to get my sound to work, but thank you for this great content!
Got damn I got sound by just running (kex), vs running (kex --win -s) Now I need to know what benefit am I given up for just running (kex) Also I see this is a old post, do you have any info on enabling networkmanager? Windows 11 had a lot of ease of use/quality of life upgrades for WSL2. I’ve enjoyed it so far as Windows is easier for a daily driver but being able to use kali for a few security/networking utilities and Ubuntu that I have built for managing a few raspberry pi projects.
@@mahdi-hasan Should be a similar process to this video, probably even a little simpler. Though this isn't the only option either. I've followed a few videos on getting linux guis on windows, though I found that for my needs I rarely need more than a terminal so I don't use it much anymore.

If you do wish to test offensive security features, just remember that it is not legal or ethical to access, copy or modify files when you do not have permission.

Sir. I entered wrong re-enter password 5:20 in kali linux and i uninstalled it and i closed that window ,again i opened .But kali linux from microsoft store its not installing....😕
maybe a small update but it could be that you cannot update kali. Check /etc/resolv. conf (with nano) and change it to your DNS server or public one. futher a nice update. As always. like your posts a lot.
That’s really great method to install kali, easy and practical. Totally better than having it on vms. One question, does it support the built-in network adapter out of the box? Or should we also use an external adapter.
What your sorry ass doesn't realise is that this is an experiment, nothing more. It doesn't have hardware access. You can't assign external WiFi cards to it. These are just useless gimmicks. The best and the recommended method will always be to use Kali in a VM or bare metal. Not like this.
The big downside I have found by doing this is you can't attach a wifi device directly to the Kali instance. So there is no monitor mode for wifi hacking. I didn't try hashcat but I suspect you can't access the GPU either. Seems more limited than a real VM to me. I ended up just bare metal install of Kali and am very happy with that.
U cant bridge network cards and take snapshots. Wsl is good for devs i think.

You can attach usb devices to wsl now. I was able to attach and list mine with lsusb but i couldn't yet list it in network devices. It might be possible.

What i found that was interesting about wsl2 is that with vcxsrv you can directly run linux apps and any gui straight within windows. Say you wanted to use Dolphin your default file explorer. You can, because your drives are in /mnt/. It takes some tweaking for those apps to actually run though (Ex. using a shell script to run exe files). But you could totally run i3wm or something else as your shell program. It would need a lot of tweaking to, say, show opened apps, but it would probably work fine. There needs to be a project set up to have a Parallels-like experience with linux on windows. That would be cool.

Have you updated WSL via the command line? If not, open CMD with admin privileges & type: wsl -update It’s 2 dashes for people on looking at this comment on iOS…

being a compatibility layer, wsl is mutch lighter than a VM being so able to run at native performance. as far as the choice goes i'm not confortable daily driving kali as wsl instance because being nat-ed, wsl is not exposet to the net and trafic is routed through windows which makes port forwarding the only painful option. so until bridged networking is added you cannot reach back kali (see basic reverse shell as an example) without the painful and "error" prone port forwarding and is not really straight forward if you are a beginner or need to make work done efficiently

It ran great up to the point I typed kali --win -s and I got a pop up saying " tigervnc viewer unable to connect to socket no connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it (10061)" and it gave me a weird IP address and I cant seem to figure this issue out so I went back to running a vm the old fashioned way :( I tried it on both of my laptops and my desktop and my desktop is a threadripper 3990wx with a 3080ti and 64gb of ram so it's not the pc haha its something about the connection it tried to make.. I found on my older laptop I had to go into wsl 1 instead of wsl 2. To even get it to work but same outcome on all three machines regardless of wsl mode 1 or 2
i have one problem.... actually i was following all your guidance in this video but due to one mistake i have ruined everything ....while installing ubuntu suddenly it had stopped at 25% so, by mistake i had closed the powershell and when i had tried to open it asked for restart and i did but when i open powershell again i find nothing had downloaded and even wsl --install command is not working , instead some guidance mannual and flag gets opened and even though i had diownload and installed ubuntu using wsl --install -d ubuntu and it had worked but when i downloaded kali linux from ms app and used uname -a then it had shown command not found ....how can i fix all....i hope it have presented my problem in clear way....please guide me...

When you get the error that it can't connect to the Kex server just run these 2 commands in KALI and try again, fixed it for me. (Thank you mechDeveloper at StackOverflow) sudo mount -o remount,rw /tmp/.X11-unix sudo kex restart

Did you get the large install of Kali? The Kali documentation in Kali's website shows how to install the optional large version. It is just a simple command. sudo apt install -y kali-linux-large. I believe the large version of Kali has more tools. I have Kali on Windows 10 with WSL2 and was able to install the large version of Kali.

This is supported in Windows 10. Prerequisites: You must be running Windows 10 version 2004 and higher (Build 19041 and higher) or Windows 11.

there is any way to use macOS Monterey like this in windows 11,
i try that in vmware but when i try to implement the newest vertion of vmware tools to that it become success, but after that macOs is working with lag problem.
there is any solution for that.

When you get the error that it can't connect to the Kex server just run these 2 commands in KALI and try again, fixed it for me. (Thank you mechDeveloper at StackOverflow)
sudo mount -o remount,rw /tmp/.X11-unix
sudo kex restart

Did you get the large install of Kali? The Kali documentation in Kali's website shows how to install the optional large version. It is just a simple command. sudo apt install -y kali-linux-large. I believe the large version of Kali has more tools. I have Kali on Windows 10 with WSL2 and was able to install the large version of Kali.
