Japan first got the actual Super Mario Bros 2 that the West knows as The Lost Levels. Nintendo initially felt SMB2/TLL was too hard for Western audiences so they reskinned another Japanese NES game called Doki Doki Panic and passed that off as Super Mario Bros 2. Turned out to be quite popular. When it was time to release Mario All-Stars globally, the Japanese Mario 2 was titled and hyped as The Lost Levels for the West while the reskinned Doki Doki Panic was named Super Mario USA for Japan to differentiate it from Super Mario Bros 2.
