I believe Jax being an asshole is just how he copes. He does all this stuff just to entertain himself. Honestly I'll compare his behavior to a gamer playing GTA, you kill a bunch of NPCs and harass the players just for shits and giggles. This is literally just a game to him and he doesn't have to face any consequences.
I mean, these NPCs have quite real feelings for what it seems, plus bullying and emotionally blackmailing his companions doesn't help his case, i hope he turns into a villain, i think this appropriated for his character

Agreed, Jax has completely dissociated from everyone else. I'm sure that in a future episode there's going to be a scenario where Jax is threatened with death and reacts surprisingly well towards it (no fight, no fear, no struggle) and actually accepts it... Until Pomni & the gang rescue him, causing Jax to flip out about thinking Death might set him and the others free

Gooseworx said that exploring characters deeper is what the The Amazing Digital Circus is all about. She even said Jax is a troubled individual. People say Jax is just an asshole, and even though that is true, remember this is an animated series where facial expressions can say alot about what charecters are feeling. At the end, where Ragatha talks about Kaufmo's funeral, you can see Jax look sad for a moment before looking irritated and then walking off. Little details like that can mean something.
I feel like Jax is an asshole not only because of personality. But as a way to protect himself. If he's an ass people won't like him. And if people won't like him they won't be close. And if you're not close to that person it won't hurt so bad when their "friends" abstract or if he himself abstract

My prediction is that Jax either caused someone to abstract, or causes the group to lose their only chance to escape
One notable thing about Jax in this episode is that, similar to the first episode where Jax unintentionally saves Kinger and Gangle by knocking them into the Gloinx pit to be an ass, while simultaneously giving them a place to hide from Kaufmo, he unintentionally does something good through his despicable, evil actions. While he did it just to see her get hurt, if he didn't throw Pomni out the truck, the game wouldn't have glitched, Pomni and Gummigoo wouldn't have ended up under the map, and Pomni wouldn't have learned that everyone, including NPCs are going through their own baggage, snapping her out of her depression and getting to open up to the others. I'm not saying Jax did that on purpose or that he's an altruist for it, but I find it interesting how many of Jax's misdeeds have actually helped the gang in some way.
I'm throwing out a wild guess and gonna say Jax is an NPC and the only person who knew was Kaufmo who he got abstracted so Caine didn't find out and poof him.

Jax’s behavior kinda mirrors any gamer who plays a game for too long… it becomes boring to “follow the story” as it was meant. So you start to deviate and harm NPC’s because their lives never mattered anyway. Basically, Jax is on his Undertale genocide route

I think Jax is just turning to violence and anything adrenaline inducing to escape having to think, because if there’s constantly conflict, then there’s no time in which he can be left alone with his own mind. The thought that he’s just super self absorbed and cares about his own well being doesn’t really sit right either. He’s gotta be smarter than he lets on with his ability to manipulate others and enter places he shouldn’t be allowed to with keys he shouldn’t even have, so that means he knows full well that being cocky when talking to huge scary monsters (like in the pilot) and making random deals with huge fudge monsters (that were very much willing to eat him had Ragatha not spoken up) is very much just a death wish, but he does it anyways. He wasn’t even scared when the fudge monster tried to eat him. My man is a special type of self destructive, he’s got the “all life is worthless and meaningless, so just have fun with it because otherwise there’s no point in living” type attitude that I used to know way too well. Any distraction is better than having to deal with sadness, even if it’s a violent distraction. His extra enthusiasm for violence could also be partially so he didn’t have to think about the fact Kaufmo was gone, which would explain the slight flash of pain when his funeral was brought up, because it’s exactly what Jax was trying to run from and forget about.
I have a theory that Jax actually likes being there and doesn’t actually want to leave and after hearing Pomni found an exit he tried to get rid of her when he through her out the truck hoping she’d let go
That theory sucks for the Pomni part you see how he is actually using her like the others not intending to kill (no you can not feel pain or die in the game)
This theory is ludicrous at any angle. There is no incense for Jax to stay in the digital circus rather than the reality.

In the pilot he says “if there was an exit I’m pretty sure we all would’ve left by now” saying that he wants to leave and for Pomni you can’t really die nor get hurt by the objects that’s why he doesn’t care about hurting the others and threw Pomni for his use
Plus, the "exit" turned out to be an unfinished "game" by Caine.

Digital Circus is loosely inspired by I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream. Which has 5 protagonists. Digital Circus supposedly has six. Making Jax the odd one out.
Between Jax's behavior and Caine's comment about getting confused on who's a human and who's an NPC, I have a feeling that Jax isn't 100% human, or has something to do with everyone being trapped there.
Nah he isn't an antagonist. He is clearly trying to avoid the current situation. Doesn't want to think about the fact he can't leave. Anything besides some action doesn't give him much enjoyment anymore. Honestly. I think out of all of them, he is struggling most

I belive he was still frustrated about the adventure, and when he heard they were making a funeral for kaufmo, he was like "eh, screw this" and went away

There is an incredibly low chance that Jax would be removed from the amazing digital Circus because if he were to be removed from the show huge amount of amazing digital circus fans would be screaming at the glitch productions and gooseworks day and night to bring him back since he is such a fan favorite character cause if you were to say who is the most favorite character in 99% of viewers will say Jax

To be fair, this is how I act whenever I play any kind of video game with my friends.
The way he reacted to Kaufmos funeral, to me, seemed like someone who did care but has been burned too many times, possibly in a way similar to Pomni, so he would rather distance himself emotionally, and in this case physcially, from the situation. I believe he's come to accept the reality of the situation hes in and therefore doesnt put much thought into the NPC's or whatever else is going on. He, to me, feels like someone who would appear like Pomni, as a jester. Someone whos just there to joke around and laugh because in the digital world he lives in not much else really matters.
I believe that he's trying to find an exit, like pomni who has found it. But was caught by caine. My theory is that jax reall wants to leave that place and continue his real life. But like he said in the pilot "Nah, i got key to everyones room" and there is a possibility he might also have the key to open the exit door so he or, they could escape this place.
Jax also possibly changed in the 2nd episodr because The creator mentioned that "jax will just get worst and worst by the episodes"
Probably because we dont see jax's hand in that one scene where pomni seemed to be falling somewhere, but were saved. He probably wasn't there because he thinks that finding the exit makes everybody appreciate him more, Especially pomni.
Jax also had a sympathetic look on his face at kaufmo's funeral. Maybe because him and kaufmo used to have a great friendship until he started abstracting.
Maybe jax's personality will change much more throughout the series. But who knows?

The second episode definitely got me thinking about Jax for all the reasons you discussed. I think its too early yet to determine if they are setting him up to be a real monster or just giving a layer of depth to his character to be later expanded on. I do think that Jax may have avoided Kaufmo's funeral because he feels some sense of guilt or responsibility for his abstraction. A lot of people seem to forget that Jax went poking around Kaufmo's room for a bowling ball after playing a prank on the other characters' rooms, so whatever he did with said bowling ball may have had an impact on Kaufmo losing it.

I think that if Jax does abstract I think the way he abstracts will be different than Kaufmo. I think he would go on an Adam style rant when he hits his breaking point with the rant being cutoff by his abstraction
Note: if anyone doesn’t get what I’m referring to is that in the end of season 1 of Hazbin Hotel, Adam was starting an angry monologue after being defeated before being stabbed by nifty
I made a theory about Jax backstory that he used to be a criminal outside of the digital circus but was taken by the same company that made the digital circus. I have this other theory about the company that made digital circus created the digital circus more as a psychological computer test game where are the Put the people in the game and test those psychological and mental effects just to see what happens and I have this idea that the company kind of got more creative and decided choose to make this whole thing entertainment for themselves and I have this theory that Caine is terrified for his life because his creators are watching him and if he makes any mistakes they might delete him. (Just an interesting theory)
I wonder if the more realistic NPCs was an attempt to appease Jax. (Along with the others of course)
But we saw before that Jax wasn’t interested in really messing with the NPCs too much but now that these ones could feel, and feel suffering, he was more interested in them
This entire adventure seemed to cater to him actually come to think of it, I’m also surprised that the fudge monster would exist considering it eats living NPCs. Earlier it was said the adventures were supposed to be family friendly but they’re not

I think the reason why jax even wants fudge to eat the kingdom is because he really either relates to fudge or just wants chaos.
I think he probably relates to fudge in being wronged for things he didn't do idk but I hope we get a episode 3 soon.

Jax knows he is in a simulation. Much like many people who go around blowing stuff up or creating chaos in GTA, he is doing the same in the circus. He sees a whole digital world where he can do anything, and so he does all things that he couldn't in the real world. This is likely him making the most of being trapped in a digital world where his actions have no consequence.
The whole "Evil Jax" thing is weird that its because of Episode 2. Think about it, these are NPCs. How Jax views them is most likely the same how we react to them in games, just kill them no consequence and no hard feelings. Then the constant argument saying that these NPC's have human like emotions and feelings, invalid, they're NPC's. The other characters may feel the same, sure they probably all collectively thought it was harsh, but then again they're NPCs which is why they don't even talk about what happened to the Kingdom as soon as they left.
Also, the characters are literally invincible to any harm besides being abstracted or making contact with someone abstracted. So the "verge of death" reason mentioned in this video is a bit of a wack reason for calling Jax evil. They literally cannot die in these adventures, it may become inconvenient for them, but they cannot die nor do they feel pain (unless in contact with abstract).
Jax does somewhat care for his companions, but will see how far he goes in instilling this supposed chaos gooseworx has mentioned that will get worse over time. Theres probably a million things that could happen with Jax.

let me explain it simple to you, NPCs can feel human emotions as they are NPCS that are built for the game so we can feel for the characters they can mimic human emotions so jax did everything for the fun of it but when he saw kaufmo's funeral he literally shows affection that he feels bad for the clown because that same clown was a real human.

I really hope we see a spotlight episode about Jax and the other digital circus members. Thomas the train did that with its characters so hopefully The Amazing Digital Circus could do the same and give each member a spotlight story. Maybe to either look deeper into their characters and personalities, or just to reveal different things that make them tick

"Just so long as I get to see funny stuff happen to other people..." was a (probably mangled) quote from Jax early in the Pilot. Didn't mean anything to me then, but after Episode 1 suddenly I'm getting vibes from him, as in, I think he is someway involved with the creation of the circus.
After all; he has keys to everyone's rooms...
I just think that Jax is just Bugs Bunny but more chaotic
You gotta remember that in video games, NPC's only exist in relevance to the player. Meaning that if the player isn't present, the NPC's aren't doing anything. Think of Half-Life 2, where the game saves memory by deleting the areas you just left and loading the areas you're heading to. So it's not like the NPC's are going about their lives off-screen. They're only active when you're around.
Digital Circus is probably the same. As soon as the main characters left the Candy Kingdom, it deleted itself along with all the NPC's. Meaning there was no fudge massacre. Which is odd. Why would Jax go through the effort of causing the massacre if it doesn't actually happen? He should know this is how it works.
Jax wasn't "sad," he was just so disappointed about this positive situation.
And he is also made an upset tone because Jax just didn't get what he wanted until the end when the candy kingdom was about to be devoured by the Fudge monster.

@@motivated2473 we can guess that Jax and the clown (idk how to spell the name) were some what friends Jax had a bowling ball in his and even had a nickname for him (same as zooble but he doesnt them as much mostly likely due theyre on as much adventures but goose said theyll have a main focus in episode 3 and somewhat in rest of the episodes) or we can one of other circus members got abstracted that Jax actually liked and doesnt want be reminded and just storms back to his room or he does care about the circus members and knows they cant nor get hurt so he uses them as tools like we see in episode 2 and nothing postitive about a funeral and still had his ending on the adventure

My theory is that Jax is actually an escaped NPC. His world was destroyed literally and figuratively like woth Gummigoo, but unlike the little croc, he survived. And he hates everything because of it. Caine mentioned that if NPC's make it out of the game worlds, it can be difficult to keep track of who's real and who isn't. His moment of regret is because he knows what it is like to lose something important.
