- Join me for some of my process in painting this vibrant Scarlet Tanager sitting amongst some bright green leaves lit by an evening summer sun. I'll talk about colour mixing, background details, and painting this colourful bird. It's going to be a long process that requires some patience and focus, with a bit of uncertainty about how to bring some of the elements to life. But in the end it's worth all that time and effort and I hope that this will be helpful! Enjoy!

You're welcome! I'm happy to share the colour mixing info as well the time it takes, and why I made some of the decisions I did. Paintings like this can be quite the process to bring to life so I like to share as much as I can about it!

Enjoyed this tutorial a lot. Thanks for not ruining your video and voice over with nousy background music. That very low, mellow music was perfect. The lower the better. The painting is so, so beautiful. The rim light on the leaves makes it almost poetic.

The simple low calming background music and tone of your voice over makes this a perfect learning experience. I then had a chance to travel with a group of artists where him and I met, and we became good friends. Beautiful painting. The light from the evening sun along with the red tanager give the painting a strong dynamic. Each leaf is done extremely well, and without the attention to detail on every leaf, it would not have done justice to this beautiful bird. Thanks for sharing your thought process regarding your color selections and the initial layout of the painting. Excellent!

I really appreciated the discussion about having patience when there are so many pieces, and your struggle to get the right reds and vibrancy and how you worked through it. Many artists on UA-cam make it look like they rarely struggle. I've just picked acrylics up after nearly 40 years, so of course I try something ridiculously difficult like dozens of lily leaves and a red lily, when I've never painted a flower before. Exercising patience and trying not to get bored or discouraged.Thanks!
You're welcome! I think it is important to share those aspects of art. It is very rare for me that a painting goes perfectly from start to finish - in fact some of them are complete drudgery and only in the last 10% have they come together as I keep working through it. With wildlife realism, or realism of any subject, it just takes time and patience and learning as much as we can, even when things sometimes don't work out. Appreciate you watching and I hope that your painting journey back into acrylics goes well!

Thank you!! Glad that this was helpful! That is definitely something to experiment with and to try some more layers. As well as using the quick drying time to this advantage - adding layers one after another right away and having nice control over fine details.
