Even coming from paramotor I would not have started with a B glider. I fly a High B and love it but when I moved from my A there was so much to learn, starting with that would have been tough.
2:24 In strong wind, try to launch with the wing in C shape. The tips of wing will be closer to you. This will pull in the center of wing first, puting less power at once. Use only top A risers. You wanna just pull up only the center of the wing first. Instead, you can look for cobra launch too. The best channel about paraglider skills >> Fly With Greg look for this video "The TEN SECRETS of PARAGLIDER CONTROL revealed!"
Before, I would automatically downvote these videos, but now that downvotes don't count for anything, you can have a thumbs up I guess. There, take it.

And you said you would never do that, but I knew eventually you would embrace your inner skygod and start gliding too! I started PG on a rush so I'm there with you on the high B. It's pretty "talky" on the tips compared to ppg wings.
Hey dude! Good to hear from you. Are you going to be in town soon? We should go PG together! And hell yeah! I love this wing, even though she gives me a little lip from time to time.
@@AnthonyVella yea I want to, if you guys get a 3 or 4 day span of decent weather for PPG and PG I'll take off and come down. Oh man! I would love that! I’ve heard of that place before. Seems like the perfect place to try new techniques. I think that is in central California, right?
The upfront cost sure is a tough pull to swallow, but I’d argue that the quality of life that it affords make be worth the debt. To be honest, I don’t personally allow myself to take on any debts (aside from the mortgage on the house), but this would likely be an exception for me. Life is too short, and learning to fly these can be tough on your body. We’re not getting any younger.
That’s awesome!! I would think a base 2 would be a bad idea for a first paraglider wing but you obviously have a decent amount of experience with wings. So you like soaring better than motoring yet?? I absolutely love soaring, I wouldn’t mind having a motor for those days that are not soarable, but I don’t think it would be nearly as gratifying and amazing as climbing thermals and going on buoyant glides.
These days, I’m much more conservative with my purchasing decisions. I definitely spent a lot of time debating whether or not going strait to an EN-B would be appropriate. Because I have hundreds of hours on advanced and competition gliders, I felt like I could responsibly go to a high B. And yes, free flight offers me a massive feeling of accomplishment. PPG is tremendously enjoyable, but there is very little effort. I suppose working hard for anything makes being successful at it all the more rewarding. I have a lot to learn and I’m looking forward to all of it.
I'm one of those guys that flies PPG because I live in a midwest cornfield and there are no mountains to run off of. Mad envy of your paragliding experience. I hope to go get some of that experience sometime. Earning a P2 and flying silently is uber appealing. Congrats!
Paramotors are PERFECT for places like that! The P2 is a goal of mine as well. Hope to knock it out early this year. Keep me posted on your progress. Stay in touch.
Well if that midwest cornfield happens to be in/near Minnesota, then call SDI Paragliding and come fly with us :). Most if not all mountain-less states have payout truck tow based operations if you weren't aware. Flying absent terrain can be very nice as there are near endless LZ's, it's a very free place to fly XC.
Excellent, congrats! Great story, well told. I'm so jealous that you have ridges like that nearby. Sites are few & far between up here in Maine. I have done two free flights on my Kona 2 and they were magical! Do you still have the Ozone Litespeed?
Cool video😊 You should learn to kill the wing asap. When landed i always turn and face the wing, Run towards it and pull down the C's to bring it to the ground. A's and C's technnique also comes in handy on windy launches. There are massive amounts of tutorials about windy launches and landings. on youtube. Good luck and have fun and safe flights man😊👊
Thank you Edwin! I watch a lot of Fly Bubbles videos, to include the “kill switch” video. I didn’t show all of them, but I ended up doing a total of 6 top landings. I intended on keeping the glider up for the first 5, but the 6th one kinda got away from me! Ill take your advice and watch more videos on killing the glider after touchdown. Thank you for commenting!
@@AnthonyVella ,You're welcome man😊 Fly bubbles is great, Fly with greg and many more. I did learn a lot from tutorials and a lot of practice groundhandling. I really love to play with the glider all the time. And on launch i could tell, Cause other gliders flew around, Pilots got picked up and smacked down. And i was just waiting with C's in hand, Took the right moment and flew off nice and easy😉 Makes all the difference.
@golf foxtrot 22 I totally hope to go to an SIV sooner than later. I have watched a few videos on pod harnesses vs open harnesses. I think I’ll consider purchasing one next year. The reclined nature of pods would have me feeling a little uneasy.
Ill give you props for just running off the side of a mountain in your? Late 30s/40s? 10 years ago i would have sent it, but being a bit older now... i would probably consult someone who knows what theyre doing lol
Without names I’ve spoken to several instructors that insist paragliding training is all you need to be a paramotor pilot. How do you feel about that? I’ll likely go to a paramotor course but i realize it means I’ll want glider training if i want to comfortably free fly.
It's not sufficient. It's important and valuable, a lot of skill transfer, but launch and equipment considerations are unique and should be given training.
Great question! I think paraglider pilots (assuming they’re somewhat good) should be able to transition relatively easily. But we paramotor pilots tent to fly much more heavily loaded gliders. A traditional course would be good, but a private instructor would be less expensive and tailored to what you already know as a paragliding pilot.
I'd tend to disagree; Launching a paramotor is almost exactly the opposite of launching a paraglider. With a paramotor, you lean back - with a paraglider you lean forward. There are things to know such as torque twist (from the motor) and other nuanced things (like the fact you have a 60+lb motor on your back). I would say that coming into paramotor training with paragliding experience will make it MUCH, MUCH easier of a transition. Check out Andre Bandera's channel. He's a paraglider pilot that went through a paramotor class (he did a 5 part video documentary on it). In it, he goes over the various things that caught him by surprise. Overall, he transitioned very easily and was the star student, but Andre has skills :)

I have a pretty massive LoZ collection! Almost all of the games and the original consoles, more cosplay items (shields from OoT and the actual ocarina of time), maps, etc. I LOVE Zelda!
You should have 50hrs of paragliding experience to be flying a high b. I don’t think ppg should be included as flying conditions are so different… You need a better reverse launch technique also, you had no method of being able to kill the glider as it started flying to its side.. holding the Reser risers and A’s is best imo When you top land you should have a kill technique (pulling rear risers) so you don’t get dragged I think you need to avoid strong thermic conditions until you have more hrs as well as strong soaring conditions.. especially on a glider that expects you to have good active pilot skills… Fly with Greg on UA-cam has great content invest some time watching his videos..
Thanks for the feedback! I’m curious what 50 hours on a low b affords a PG pilot. What knowledge are they gaining during that time that they will then take with them as they transition to a high b? I should have been more clear in the video; I know how to kill the wing in strong conditions. I was waiting for my friend to get closer to me so he could help pull me away from the bushes. As for avoiding thermals, I will! Haha. The thought still gives me a little anxiety. I’m hoping to build the experience to have what it takes to core a thermal by the end of the year. Just a goal. 🙂
@@AnthonyVella a low class glider is a more forgiving wing. I want a high b so bad but I only have 20-25hrs... I guess it’s more so the fact that when you make the wrong inputs and cause the glider to spin, stall, collapse, spiral dive etc you’ll have more chance of recovering with minimal heading change.. you have the glider now so you may as well keep going with it but i suggest you go with more experienced pilots... and learn a few new techniques which you practice on a field not on launch.. Also I wouldn’t be using full speed bar that close to the ground in turbulent conditions, you can suffer big a semetrics and full frontals... and at that altitude it wouldn’t be good. Unless you need to get in front of the hill of course. Get a vario and get out in the afternoons for thermic flying don’t fly in the middle of the day when the conditions are strong until you have a few hours of thermic flight and are comfortable. Do an siv course or do at least your own research into what siv course entails and what actions are taken in different situations Definitely learn what “active flying” means so important
That looked like FUN! Do you feel more/less in control compared to powered flight? I'd think LESS, simply because you're at the mercy of what the wind/lift does and you're typically flying in more... trashy conditions.
From a strictly control sense, all things being equal, there is no real difference. Realistically though you're going to be flying something with much lighter wing loading when paragliding since of course a lower sink rate helps you climb. With an engine it's pretty common to intentionally fly a smaller wing since you have no such concerns and you would rather have speed and maneuverability, nor do you care much about chasing low aspect ratios. Smaller more heavily loaded wings will have snappier controls, and high aspect ratio wings will be more stable. So for those reasons in most setups a PPG will have more control. And yes of course you are also intentionally flying in active air. All that said though beginner level PG flying is quite safe. Flying in significant conditions on super high aspect ratio wings.... it can get overtly dangerous.
So having accomplished this do you think you'll paraglide more than you paramotor? How would you describe the difference in feel of the experiences? Maybe that's for another video ;)
I don’t think the conditions would allow for me to paraglide as often. So not no, but I’ll be paragliding every chance that I get! Haha. Yes! Another video for sure. 😁
A different set of skills and terminology compared to PPG. It seems allot more risky or dangerous. It takes ALLOT more weather knowledge. I wouldn't think the desert climate would be hospitable to paragliders and paragliding.
In my eyes, the problem with US-paragliding is the lack of training... "You don't know what you don't know." Meaning, without proper training, you're not even aware of the dangers that can injure you SEVERELY or even kill you until it is to late... Over here in the Alps we have very meticulous training extending as far as meteorology and aerodynamics, in addition to all the flight training, practicing collapses and so on... - To see guys from the US literally strapping random wings to themselves and running of mountains is plain insane... Yes, paragliding IS forgiving 99% of the time... And the the other 1% you're lying on top of a mountain, your back shattered in 7 places... - In my experience, people who do a lot of shouting while showing poor wing control rarely "don't suck" at paragliding... And they can have been paragliding for YEARS and that still be the case. I saw a 50+ year old dude that's been gliding for 30 years nearly kill himself on the very first launch of a SIV at Lago di Garda, for example... Bare minimum I would get myself a theory book on paragliding that covers all the more high level stuff like aerodynamics, meteorology and wing dynamics in flight.

Oh wow! To free fly is to live the dream !!
I totally agree. This flight felt nothing sort of incredible. I think I’m hooked.
Taking a high B as your first paragliding wing o.0 ? Looking forward to those thermal colapses :D
I'm next!!! Awesome video!!!
Hell yeah brother! I’m scared to say this on here, but in ways, it’s way more rewarding than PPG! Lifting off seriously feels like magic!
Nice site to fly!
It’s really close to my house. Hope to get out to this site every chance I get.
Australia says " Well done Mate!"
Thank you!!! I’d love you PG there next time I fly to Melbourne. Hope to fly with you once I get there.
2:24 In strong wind, try to launch with the wing in C shape. The tips of wing will be closer to you. This will pull in the center of wing first, puting less power at once.
Use only top A risers. You wanna just pull up only the center of the wing first.
Instead, you can look for cobra launch too.
The best channel about paraglider skills >> Fly With Greg
look for this video "The TEN SECRETS of PARAGLIDER CONTROL revealed!"
AWESOME! this is a lot of very useful information. I will definitely try that technique next time I’m out there and the conditions are strong.
Great job!
Before, I would automatically downvote these videos, but now that downvotes don't count for anything, you can have a thumbs up I guess. There, take it.
😂😂😂 That is so out of character! I still would have expected you to smash that thumbsdown. 😂
The Base2 is a star of a glider! When in strong winds, pull the c and d’s to depower the wing and force it down. Other than that, have more fun!!!
Definitely! I am so happy with my Base 2. I was on the fence on whether I should get the lightweight version or not. Really happy to have ordered this standard weight version. LOVE IT! Speaking of BGD, I love the Cyclone as well! Still hoping to fix the tip steering attachment. Leandra and I enjoy BGD so much that we bought 2 BGD Magic Motors for our school. By the way, I think you’ll love the review I’m working on for the Xenit!
@@AnthonyVella will get back ti you on the tip steering topic, your vids are always a joy to watch!
@@NavidSaleki thank you bror!
LOL I remember the last time I was there I was like dude id be Gliding on those Franklin foothills!
I should have come down the other weekend, but it's tough road work for a friday night drive and sunday night back, I'd like to spend a little more time in the area! I want to check out your new place.
@@vmlinuxz please do come and check it out! I’ll be out there today with Leandra. We’re pulling a big piece of farming equipment behind my truck to level the land. Hopefully I don’t blowup the engine! Haha
If you need a place to stay while you’re here, we have a spare room. 👍🏻
Sweetness you got to come sand dune ridge soaring in sea side California it’s where I learned super forgiving
Super fun
Oh man! I would love that! I’ve heard of that place before. Seems like the perfect place to try new techniques. I think that is in central California, right?
yes central Cali by Monterey I live in Santa Cruz @@AnthonyVella
I'm still dreaming of the day I will get to do this. My dreams are big and my money is tight.
Looked good 👍
Nice! I’d strongly recommend you get a harness with additional back protection! What do you think of the “talkative tips” (Bruce’s words) :)
I'm yelling yay and doing jazz hands at the same time. I hope I end up doing this 3 years down the road!
@@entelin heck yeah! Sounds fun!
That initial takeoff would have had me offering some very much unwanted jet assist.
😂😂😂😂
Excellent, congrats! Great story, well told. I'm so jealous that you have ridges like that nearby. Sites are few & far between up here in Maine. I have done two free flights on my Kona 2 and they were magical! Do you still have the Ozone Litespeed?
dang what was the wind speed, looked like it really kicked up
Hi Austin. The wind speed probably picked up to 20mph or so…
Free flight is 🪂👌🪂
I know it! It’s so damn rewarding. 🕺🏻
@@edwinlooy6551 that is how I hope to be! Practice practice practice! Long term goal is XC! 😁
You'll be buying a pod harness before you know it. Are you getting ready for an SIV course😜?
@golf foxtrot 22 I totally hope to go to an SIV sooner than later. I have watched a few videos on pod harnesses vs open harnesses. I think I’ll consider purchasing one next year. The reclined nature of pods would have me feeling a little uneasy.
@@AnthonyVella I loved my pod harness.

Nice video man.
Suggestion: Turn the music down a little when you are talking
You bet! I appreciate the feedback.
Did great
Thank you, Tony! 🙌🏼
Yeah buddy.........................
Thanks again for letting me play with your new glider. That was a lot of fun! I think it helped hook me into purchasing mine.

@@luciensims 😂😂😂 Yes my love. I am so sorry. I hope that you forgive me eventually.
I have heard it said that paragliding pilots make better paramotor pilots. With your experience can you expand on if that is true or not and why?

holy shit just noticed your dope Majora's Mask
I have a pretty massive LoZ collection! Almost all of the games and the original consoles, more cosplay items (shields from OoT and the actual ocarina of time), maps, etc. I LOVE Zelda!
Do you still make videos
This hasnt aged well! In all seriousness, get well! Speedy recovery
You should have 50hrs of paragliding experience to be flying a high b. I don’t think ppg should be included as flying conditions are so different…
You need a better reverse launch technique also, you had no method of being able to kill the glider as it started flying to its side.. holding the Reser risers and A’s is best imo
When you top land you should have a kill technique (pulling rear risers) so you don’t get dragged
I think you need to avoid strong thermic conditions until you have more hrs as well as strong soaring conditions.. especially on a glider that expects you to have good active pilot skills…
Fly with Greg on UA-cam has great content invest some time watching his videos..
Do an siv course or do at least your own research into what siv course entails and what actions are taken in different situations
Definitely learn what “active flying” means so important
Where was this? looks like a place in Colorado!
Hi Alvin! This is in Santa Teresa, NM. It’s an old landfill.
Was that just the bloopers? Where's the "not sucking" footage? 😁
BWAHAHAHA! Damn you! 😂
That looked like FUN! Do you feel more/less in control compared to powered flight? I'd think LESS, simply because you're at the mercy of what the wind/lift does and you're typically flying in more... trashy conditions.
When the conditions got really strong, I felt less in control, but when it was smooth, it was effortless! It’s seriously so rewarding though!
Been a while since we have seen or heard anything. Starting to think something bad has happened?…
I likeeee
Me likeeee too!!! 😂
Pay Atantion to the Turbulenzes ,that is the biggest Danger in this Sport !
A different set of skills and terminology compared to PPG. It seems allot more risky or dangerous. It takes ALLOT more weather knowledge. I wouldn't think the desert climate would be hospitable to paragliders and paragliding.
For sure! The real pilots out hear speak of sharp and intense thermals. I’ll keep practicing on the ridges before chasing these monster thermals.
Very nice, looks hella fun. *side note: plz manscape that homeless beard thing bro.
Haha! Thank you. And I have been wanting to shave it for a while now. It is out of control. 😂
