The anti repair argument is pure insanity there would be no safety risk if the bloody manufacturer made it easy to remove the battery or any other component that can cause risk

Its BS on the face of it. Now if they "glued it in" by pouring epoxy all over it.... maybe, but some double sided tape? really??

They make an argument for anti-repair because someone could have fixed your phone with stolen parts...
Well, maybe if the manufacturer sold their replacement parts for what they were actually worth it wouldn't be profitable to "sell stolen parts".
It just feels like the AirPods solution to a problem of a headphone jack removed 10 minutes prior... A pricy solution to a stupid issue...
You hit the nail on the head…. Anti-repair is driven by greed and corruption.
I still have my cheap tablet for movies, been replacing the battery everytime it needs replacing. Now I modded it with two massive batteries and now last double than stock lol.
Preventing third-party repair may be even MORE dangerous than allowing it.
My current daily driver, an MSI GF63 8RC, is four years old, give or take. While not everything inside is user-replaceable, such as the CPU and GPU being soldered to the motherboard, it's really easy to clean and all the other major components can be upgraded or replaced.
That includes the battery.
Now, as soon as I mentioned the battery, you probably know where I'm going with this. Well, a year and a half ago, I noticed that my laptop's chassis was warped a bit towards the front and my space bar and touchpad were becoming increasingly unresponsive. I looked up a disassembly video on my laptop's model and saw that the battery was towards the front of the laptop - the same place where I was having problems. So I carefully opened up my laptop, following the disassembly video and was met with a nasty spicy pillow. I was able to get rid of it and order in a new battery which I was able to use instead without any complications.
Now, imagine if I had to go to, say MSI to get that battery replaced for whatever reason. I would have to either take my laptop to MSI myself or mail it to them. Would it even survive the trip? Not helping things was that that battery had been swollen like that for quite some time. Who knew how much longer that battery had left before exploding? And I'm pretty sure spicy pillows and aeroplanes don't mix. Replacing the battery myself was the safest route to take, as it was the quickest and negated the dangers of transporting the device to the people who supposedly had to be the ones to fix it, be it poor handling of the device or taking it many, many metres into the sky.

It's because they can sell you the charger separately in an extra box using up more cardboard and plastic because environment or something.

I work as a service tech/OTP for a restaurant group
I constantly hear from my stores "why not just get new equipment instead of repairing this OLD stuff"
I've explained multiple times how these items are designed to ve repaired and how repair parts are far less expensive.
Right now so many people only see replacing with new as the right way of doing things instead of fixing items
They just don't want to have to deal with the disgusting grime left by their inadequate cleaning... much easier if you just replace the machine, right?
I once knew a guy in university, he was an army veteran. He used to tell us how many Apple computers and products were constantly lying around, in the field mind you, because they weren't allowed to fix them. Apple needed to send someone to "repair" the devices, which took a long time, and it was easier to use older, non-Apple, devices that they could still use and repair.

i feel that most people defending anti-repair/user unfriendly phone design are apple fans that dont realise that apple can be wrong, and/or they dont want to admit that apple did something wrong because of buyers remorse/guilt. When i was a teenager, I would defend nintendo relentlessly. but when i got older i realised that i can like something while still seeing its flaws. I still like nintendo, and play there games regularly, but at the end of the day, I know nintendos in the wrong when they shut down emulation, or fan games, and i wont defend them doing it, if anything I agree with the people calling nintendo out on it.

Ain't no surprise cause, financial issues to kept the new project requires a lot of money for doing it every 1 year cause user can use almost 3 years before any sign of worn out part repair begin to take effects.
Been with you 100% since day one Hugh. I've been into phone customisation since the Galaxy s4 and iPhone 4s. Making something your own once you've bought it is done EVERYWHERE. You don't buy a house and leave it exactly as it is, no, you add to it, to make it feel better for you or fit a certain aesthetic you have in mind.
Greed is the only thing these manufacturers know anymore, and that passes down to customers as they become so used to just buying another product once even the smallest thing happens to their current device. No wonder the planet is just a huge landfill now, overflowing with eWaste. If money can be made, the world will always suffer.

Every week, someone drops an Apple phone or five (5) at my home so that I can repair them. Why? They can't get any of the local shops 0:05 to repair them. I seldom see Android devices because they're easily repaired by the local shops. If I sound like a crotchety old man, it's because I am. I'd rather goof off in my old age as a retired technician than mess with devices that are intentionally designed to be difficult, if not impossible, to repair.

I would personally NEVER attempt to repair a phone myself as I don’t have the technical know-how nor the inclination (I usually regard a broken device as a good excuse to get that shiny new device I’ve been wanting) but there is simply ZERO justification for these companies to disallow third-party repair of their products and especially to actively design them in such a way as to make proper repairs impossible (i.e. Apple’s draconian tactic of labeling parts as “not genuine”, even though they are, just because they were replaced without Apple’s blessing). These tactics are blatantly anti-consumer and are a naked attempt by the manufacturers to force people to buy new devices when they really should not need to. When you buy any product you should OWN said product and be allowed to do whatever you want with it, period. Especially with how ridiculously priced these new devices already are these days.

Someone in Louis community said, serilaized parts could be blocked from working only when the device is reported stolen

They are also trying to prevent people from repairing devices because of the money from the company repairing or the user just buying a new phone
In a time of diminishing natural resources it seems stupid to disallow anyone to access repair rather than new purchase; but then Corporate execs only concern is their annual bonus

Exactly. I wonder, do anti-repair idiots think that hammers should be banned? I mean, you could hit your thumb! How about electric drills? One slip and you have a nasty cut or a hole in your hand. As for saws, particularly electric tools with cutting discs, one slip and you lose a finger or a hand.
Ultimately this is all about control and money - the big companies don't care about the environment, they just want to milk the consumer as much as possible. Governments could do a lot more to help the right to repair issue if only many weren't partly or wholly corrupt and in the back pockets of large corporations.

There's also the interests of the people living near electronics landfills outside of the US. If I have to dispose of a 'useless' phone it likely ends up contributing to a toxicity problem for other people.

Why out of all the materials they could choose for a "premium" back panel, did they choose something as brittle as glass?
Yeah, I don't get it. I've only ever had "budget" phones with plastic panels (LG Escape 3, Motorola G Power, and now a OnePlus Nord N10 5G), and the worst that can happen to them is getting scuffed. At no point have they ever come close to being shattered.
What I like about my Google Pixel 5 is that it has a metal back instead of glass. Wireless charging still works so I dont understand why most companies aren't using metal other than for money reasons.

Glass backs are so difficult to keep clean, so difficult to hold steady, so easy to scratch and shatter, so expensive to replace, all in the name of _MINIMALIST AESTHETICS._ I've seen so many phones whose back glass are completely busted.

That's y i love watching your contents u are one of the many technician i see doing videos like this speaking about the rights to repair its unfair to the owner to spend so much money on a device and can't repair it if its damaged it's like u don't have full ownership over your device
Imagine if car manufacturers did the same thing and only allowed you to use their workshops to service your car and you could only use genuine parts, not aftermarket, otherwise your airbags won't work or your abs brakes won't function correctly. There would be an absolute uproar!

Thanks for very important message about repair a rate to repair your own phone. That’s why I stop fixing my phone. I ran into too many issues with Apple and other Samsung products.
Also, cars are being set up with systems that require repair at the dealership and nowhere else. The tools for repair are simply not sold to anyone but dealers.
why is it that only in tech this happens?
recently had to change my wipers on my Renault, using their argument I shouldn't have done that and instead gone to a Renault certified garage and gotten them changed their. this analogy extends to refilling various fluids in the system, and changing filters or tyres or whatnot.
The problem faced outside USA is the part availability such as battery which are hard to get once they are EOL by manufacturers and ifixit or others don't ship to all locations over the world

when i opened my first phone being 10yo, i punctured the battery and even with that basic knowledge i could immediately put it on a closed glass bottle until it stopped smoking, i say this to prove anything needs basic prevention to avoid injury and phones should be repairable

Theft wise, block parts marked as stolen. Re-sale wise, provide a tool to scan the phone for 3rd part parts on-demand. It's such an easy problem if it wasn't about making the consumer buy new products.

4:30 To which I go a step further: If that was the issue, let your users go to your website, and put a claim to disable that phone's parts when it is actually needed by showing proof of purchase. Then push an update to all your models with the blacklist so those parts stop working for repairs. They sure could considering they have no qualms of sending telemetry back, so a few kb of data for a blacklist should not be a big deal. You achieve the same, without killing reparability. But that ain't the goal, as we all know by now.
The think of the children or other lines to give up your freedoms seems to still fool people.
Oh and about battery danger:
It is dangerous, to have an expanded battery glued in a sealed glass sandwich. That is a fire hazard. Not removing it...

1:28 one issue of removable batteries was that customers could easily install low quality replacements which bloats easily. Now I wonder if company brings back removable batteries but with hardware pairing so only good quality replacements are installed.

Few days ago I'm replacing my Xr battery myself with 3rd party one that got extra capacity after some thought about this kinda thing..yeah the unknown part warning shows up after that..but nah..my Xr right now works flawlessly and the battery last much longer.. quite happy and satisfied for what I'm done.. I've own the device so i should be able to do what i want..

Since i was a kid anytime something breaks i tried to repair it before just throwing it away, the ammount of times its just a small wire breaking that you just need to reconnect or something simple like that is crazy
