My brother's car got its entire wiring harness melted because of that, a buddy was jumping their car using his and didn't pay attention. Should be illegal to have red ground cable.
30 yrs ago I lived in a small town in nw Florida. Mechanic there named Billy, one of the best mechanics I've ever known, knew that I couldn't afford much of anything. He would diagnose the problem on my vehicle, charge me very little for doing it, give me tips on how to repair it. I'd go buy a Chilton or Haynes manual and repair it myself. Wonderful guy. Any time I heard someone needed a mechanic, I'd send them to him. Was the least I could do. I wasn't the only one he did things like that for.
Ya, I was freaking out a bit when he hooked up the black charger wire to the red ground wire... Felt kind of dumb after realizing it was ok because it was a red ground wire. Felt way better when he almost hooked the smoke machine backwards.
@@karlaerdmann7830 Yeah, really bad practice -- sends all the wrong visual clues, and is about the quickest way to ensure someone, someday, is going to connect a battery charger/jumper-cables around the wrong way =^/

Thank you Eric! My son bought a 2013 Veloster Turbo in the summer of 2019. It's always had this EVAP code, and we were at the point where we were going to have to have it smoke tested to find the leak. When I saw your video and you spoke about the TSB I was pretty sure this could be the problem. Before ordering any parts we visually inspected the vapor canister on his car and sure enough it was cracked just like the one on the video and showed signs of wetness around the crack. Based off of all of the other components testing ok and the condition of the EVAP canister we replaced the canister. It took about three to four times driving it for it to complete all of the monitors but it finally completed the EVAP monitor with no problems. Thank you Eric O for all of the great content and helping us home mechanics work on our own cars.
Hi, Mr. O. Granny's hose trick worked very well. Another similar trick is grampa's stick trick. Get something similar to a 1/4 inch dowel. (It doesn't have to be straight.) Touch one end to find a noise and press the other end to your ear. It works to find engine taps, knocks, and squeaks. Thanks for sharing! Stay Healthy!

I am not 100% sure if it applies to the vlosters but when i worked as a hyundai tech for a short while, there existed a TSB/recall for the canisters cracking around the mounting bolts creating evap leaks.
That's awesome that we get to hear the evap leak via a piece of rubber hose. You taught me a new trick I didn't know today, about using the hose like a stethoscope. Now I've used long pull handles and extensions and what not to listen for knocks and pings through an engine block or valve cover or head, also like a stethoscope.
I just got a P0456 in my Veloster and have been watching for years. No smoke makinne though. I have reversed the seal on the gas cap as the problem showed immediately after filling the tank. Thanks for years of edutainment. Also, I have a PSE, not a Mathews.
Thanks for posting. I just found an evap leak, Santa Fe . Same deal. Blocked vent with vise grips, used smoke machine. Cracked around bolt hole, had moisture too. Excellent video, really helped.
Reminds me of when I was a teenager working on my own engines. You hear a knock, take a long bladed screwdriver, place the tip in the vicinity of the noise and place the handle against your ear. Worked every time!
5" PVC pipe. 2 threaded PVC cleanout plugs. Nuts, bolts and washers for terminals. Propane regulator and air line adapters. Threaded hose barbs. Nichrome wire (the stuff for building vape coils works well). Tiki torch wicks. Mineral oil. Glue the PVC together to make a container. Drill and tap 2 holes for the hose barbs. One around the middle of the pipe and one on the top cleanout plug. Then do some math and trial and error to figure out proper resistance and length of the nichrome wire. Wrap it around the middle of the torch wick. Position the wick in a U shape so the ends of the wick are at the bottom of the pipe with the wire coil in the middle. Works best if the air from the air inlet is blowing across the wire coil. Drill 2 holes in the top for the bolts and washers to make terminals for the nichrome wire. Use 3 nuts per bolt. 1 to secure the wire against the bolt head and 2 to fasten the bolt to the top plug leaving a gap to isolate the wire from the PVC. Fill pipe part way with mineral oil. Connect regulator attached to air compressor to inlet side and a plain hose to the outlet. Power it using the car battery. If all is good, you'll have a smoke machine. This is how I did it.
Very common on these Velosters and 11-15 sonata hybrids. The inserts rust out and cause cracks and leak. There is a TSB but they also had a recall to either install a repair kit or replace canister depending on what you find. Good job Mr. O
I had a brand new 2012 Velostar and it was the single most trouble-ridden car I have ever owned. Can you believe the harmonic balancer fell off in the middle of the road on a brand new car? The bolt sheared off. Dealer wouldn't even get me a rental and it could have been a deadly situation on the freeway. Headlights burned out once a year (both left and right) and there was a recall on the sunroof (random shattering) and brakes. The automatic transmission shifted like a bucking horse and I was told repeatedly that was 'normal'. I could go on, but between the dealer and the manufacturer, I'll never own another Hyundai. Even the 'required service' intervals (advertised in the service area of the dealership) was a complete ripoff with the threat of voiding your warranty if you don't pay for 'inspections' every 30,000 miles (each one about twice the cost of the other for VISUAL inspections that result in the dealer making warranty money from the manufacturer. Talk about double dipping!) Got a new 2013 V6 Mustang a year later and it has never needed a repair (just maintenance items). Still have the Mustang, with the shorter warranty that was never needed, and dumped the Veloster with the 10 year warranty that was constantly needed!

Oh man a year!? Ughhh I've been a month and really miss food haha
i DID HEAR THE HISSING FROM THE LEAK, THATS PRITY COOL, ILL HAVE TO TRY THAT WHEN THE TIME COMES, ALWAYS GREAT TO WATCH YOUR VIDEO
I sure am glad we dont have problems with rust like you do. I noticed 1 small spot on the rocker panel of my 2014 pick up the other day and it did not make me happy. Good job on finding that evap leak Eric....
Enjoy all your videos especially the test light ones. Even in Canada, to come across a mechanic of your skill is a rarity. Mostly have to depend on dealers at 145.00 an hour for labor. I’ve been fortunate to be able to figure my way around most issues, but it sure is getting more difficult .
Meemaw sure had a lot of tricks!
Soap ... so he says... huh? On the seat... yea.. Don't know about that. Maybe he was a happy guy, who knows. Great video Eric.
Another cool tip - the hose to hear the leak. Another great video!
Kick back and enjoy that Yuengling... or two.
I didn't know you got the 'Rona Eric :(
Glad you survived through it, and really hope you get your taste and smell back soon..... Not for evap leaks, but for Mrs O's delicious cooking!!!
Love it when you do the "enhance, enhance, enhance" gets me laughing every time. Eric you are the best to watch for sure🤘
