    Thanks guys for giving us such a great resource for spondylolithesis! I was diagnosed at age 12 and I wish I had had something like this as a reference back then, instead of having to figure it all out piecemeal over the past 25 years. I can also attest that it is possible to get back to living a normal life with less pain by working on strengthening core muscles and improving mobility/flexibility. I work full time as an RN and my patients are always shocked when I tell them I've had back problems for so many years because, in their words, "you don't look like you have back problems!"

    I have grade 2 spondy and do these and more core exercises 2-3 times per week and rarely have big pain flare ups any more. I did make the mistake of trying chair yoga class, too much rotation and I was n bad pain for 5 days. I don’t use a back cushion, I have tried several. But a use a seat cushion now especially in the car/truck the bouncing hurt but the cushion is very helpful. When my back flared up last year, sitting in church pew was difficult. I use a standard pillow between my knees to ankle when side sleeping and use under my knees when on my back. Keep up with the exercises really help. We purchased a basic massage table on Amazon for home to do these exercises, as it was hard to do them on the floor due to knee and back arthritis. I’ve watched all the B&B videos. Thanks for all the help! 🥳👏🌷

      This is not spondylitis! The root word spondylos means spine. All the various "spondy***" conditions are spinal problems. It's means inflammation. Spondylitis means spine inflammation. What they are talking about here are vertebrae that are out of alignment causing pain. You can have both but they are very different problems treated differently.

    I have to share an unexpected side effect of forefoot walking! I just started practicing after your video a few weeks ago and I walk commute to work every day. It is about 1.3 miles. My mood is better! Same walk, same distance, same time of day, same destination, but forefoot walking I am calmer! So weird, but maybe that low grade back-pain from heel striking was making me cranky! Thought I'd share! If you're a cranky pants after a walk, you may have back pain! but you are right, it takes practice! I survived a TBI and had to relearn to walk, so UNlearning heel strike has been a bit of a challenge, but I figure we get added neurological bonuses ;) thank you guys as always

    Can you guys re-tackle this again but with special attention to Anterior Pelvic Tilt (APT)? It seems like people with spondy also has APT but they're not aware about it. So, what to address first, and how to address it? Or can it be done/solved at the same time?
    Also, I was expecting that an inversion table would be mention in this video. Can you include it as well if it works with people that have spondy and APT?

    Mine is at L5-S1 (L5 slipped forward). Degree 1. MRI confirmed stenosis. Most of this video is me: when I was at my worst, even walking 1/2 of a mile caused stabbing glute pain. Now I can walk 7 miles comfortably.
    One difference: doing some *mild* McKenzie press ups (in moderation) makes it feel better. But mostly, i avoid extension.

    This is great information. The exercises are great. If you don’t have an advanced case. For advanced cases I believe only surgery will help. I started having spondy and DDD at age 25. Nobody could figure out how this happened. I was very Active and no known trauma. Mine was a grade 3 and pretty serious. I decided to have a spinal fusion and laminectomy at age 28 after seeing different specialists and orthopedic surgeons and trying every treatment and exercise there is without success. I will give the wedge a try because sleeping can be a struggle.

    Hello, Guys. Newly diagnosed with Spondy. Also comparing the fixes , that is Medial Branch Ablation v. Surgical . My question (as a new viewer)---have you produced a video(s) on the effectiveness of the former v the latter ? Of course I'm leaning towards the simpler ablation treatment, though it needs to be repeated every 6 to 9 months. Yes, it may not be as effective as the surgery but I'm trying ablation because ablation requires less in the way of caregiving services. A single patient here. Input from your experience would be much appreciated. Richard in Atlanta.

    Have had back pain for quite some time, just one day of strengthening exercises for strengthening & shortening the piriformis & almost immediate results. I was stretching for weeks! Still have some discomfort but will continue to do the exercises the shorten the muscle until the pressure is off my sciatica.
    My next problem is my calf muscle is knotted up from a few months of off-and-on sciatic problems, causing numbness, cramping, pain down that leg. Do you guys have suggestions for that? Affects of sciatica on legs?

    I have spondylolisthesis, spondylolysis, DDD, and osteoarthritis. I had to have fusion surgery and a lamenectomy due to the 2 herniated discs rubbing on my spinal cord (I actually had it done twice as my hardware loosened after my first surgery, and they ended up doing a bone graft as well). Anyway, I did the leg lift with the ball in therapy to strengthen my core. I was told to NEVER do crunches or sit ups as those exercises do more harm to the back than any good for the abdominals! There are so many better exercises to do that will not cause damage to the back. I used to do a lot of crunches when I was younger, and now I’m wondering if that is what furthered the damage to my back. Just a thought.

How can they treat both issues at the same time because if one does extension exercises the spondylosthesis gets worse but the discs get better and if flexsion exercises then the spondylosthesis gets better but bulged discs get worse.

    Difficult problem here. I have this and also some really knarly bone spurs bilat in the same area. I wake up with sciatica frequently. Back issues put me in a recliner for 8 to 10 years, as well as sleeping in it at night. It caused atrophy of stomach muscles which caused a ventral incarcerated hernia. Surgery with complications to repair the hernia resulted in a 16 inch midline vertical incision. This will need re-repair about every 18mos or so, so abdominal strengthening is very limited. How do I strengthen my core when I have a 10lb lifting limit for both conditions. HELP!

    Can you please go into more details on the shoes? I wear very flexible soled shoes. They are so comfortable, and i feel like im walking on a cloud. However, a physical therapist said i needed arch support or it would continue to contribute to back pain. She also said any shoe that bends like that (my shoes and the shoe you bend in the video) is bad for backs. Is what she is saying inaccurate for someone with spondy? I am skeptical of a handful of physical therapists ive been passed around to because i get the impression they don't have much experience treating someone with spondy. Only one PT actually recommended the specific exercises you mentioned in this video. The others just gave me generic strengthening exercises.

    • @jessicab9271
      @jessicab9271 Рік тому +1

      They recommended zero drop shoes in passing, but those specifically I would be wary of. I wear minimalist shoes myself, and the process of switching to them requires foot and ankle strengthening exercises as well. If you just switch shoes without doing any of the exercises, you will likely wind up with an injury or plantar fasciitis. I had a pair of zero drop shoes, but I gave myself a stress fracture in my foot due to the lack of arch support. If minimalist or zero drop shoes are something you are interested in, I recommend looking up some videos on heel drop and the debate on minimalist shoes versus zero drop shoes. It's been much debated on UA-cam in the past few years, and there really isn't a consensus that I can tell. Some people swear by one or the other, and there are people who have gotten injuries from both. Ultimately, as someone who has been living with spondylolisthesis for 25 years, I can tell you that your back will be the decider for you in the end. As much as I love my minimalist shoes, I will wear traditional athletic shoes for my 12 hour shifts because otherwise my back is in bad shape by the end of the day. If your current shoes are working for you, it might not be worth risking upsetting anything. On the other hand, if you are having any problems with back pain, or really any pain from the lower back down, it might be worth looking into changing things up.

    I have stage 2 Spondylolisthesis and DDD with 2.5mm instability. I’ve been through PT and perform my exercises daily. They’ve helped immensely. However, I’m a golfer and my conditions are always aggravated. Steroid shots worked for 5 weeks, but once I golfed, I started to have symptoms again. My physicist said because of the instability, and because I’m a golfer, I should consult a surgeon. I’m only 64. Do you have any advice for golfers?

    As I practice walking with my forefoot it feels like I’m walking in high heels but in a flat shoe . Not sure if I’m doing it correctly?

    • @jpe1
      @jpe1 Рік тому

      Sounds like you are doing it right. I’m of the generation that was taught to run using a heel strike stride, “because it’s faster” (actually, it’s not, but Nike told people it was in oder to sell their sneakers with lots of heel cushion). Took me about 3 months to re-learn running with a mid strike, and it felt exactly like what you describe. Hoka makes a sneaker with zero drop and extra tread under the ball of the foot, it pretty much forces a mid-strike stride, and was what I used to re-learn my running technique.

      Your achilles tendon actually shortens over time if you are always wearing shoes with a "heel drop." They did not explain this at all in the video, but there are many good videos on heel drop and the debate on zero drop versus minimalist shoes if you are interested in the specifics and techinicalities. The more time you spend walking around barefoot, in socks, or in minimalist shoes, the more your feet, and your achilles tendon, will get accustomed to it. Doing some foot and ankle stregthening and flexibility exercises can be helpful too. Most resources I have looked at recommend walking around your house barefoot or in socks as much as possible if you are trying to switch to forefoot walking/running. You will probably find that you naturally switch to midfoot or forefoot walking simply because you will be able to feel your heel striking the floor and feel that it's harder on your feet and back than you realize when you are wearing shoes.

      I was going to ask the same thing. I didn't hear them mention anything about the vertebrae fusing together though.

    • @renel7303
      @renel7303 Рік тому +1

      No. Spondylitis is an inflammatory condition. This is vertebrae that are out of alignment and possibly squeezing the spinal cord. Treated differently. If you get x-rays done you might find you have both. Extra joy. I have 3 or 4 places with retrolisthesis. Instead of slipped forward they are slipped backwards. Not as common, just as painful. Itis means inflammation. Spondylos means spine so any condition with spondy in the name is a spinal condition.

    • @renel7303
      @renel7303 Рік тому

      @@Kathleen253 read my reply to WW. You can have both. Also you'll be happy to hear that not everyone has their spine fuse from Ankylosing Spondylitis. Mine has been happy to just toss up a few bone spurs.

    Does anyone’s butt burn by a nerve after sitting in a chair for awhile? I got an epidural a year ago (for the 2nd time) and man he must have hit a nerve - both my upper butt cheeks started hurting when he injected me. That didn’t happen the first time. Same pain when I sit in a chair.

    Why not go for surgery, if you have no disk surely that can be good having bone on bone. No matter how strong your core is its not going to separate the vertebrae affected! I have grade 1-2 Spondy from a bilateral pars defect and have been advised by the consultant to consider surgery.
