    Since last night, my Venue 11 pro 7140 has been automatically shutting down when I dock the keyboard. I followed your instructions, removed the battery and it now works again!
    However, I wonder if the issue would remain even with a new battery.

    I came to this video because I was experiencing the same touchpad issues, and had already tried every variation of firmware/regedit/software fix out there, to no avail. I was finally committed to taking the keyboard apart but, as I was watching this video, the touchpad magically started working again! It has been dead for 2 days, but all of a sudden it just began working. Nonetheless, I thank you for making this video, as I may have to take the keyboard apart down the road, but for now it seems to have been scared into action by the threat of being dismantled. Cheers!

      I notice there are some "flex" issues on my keyboard. With the tablet attached, if I lift it up by the right hand corner, or hold it up by the right hand corner, the trackpad stops working. The metal case feels really stiff, but apparently it's not. OR maybe the flexing is moving a poorly connected cable? That's what I'm wondering after this video.

    My keyboard was fully dead, so I thought, for over 2 years. Opened it up after watching this video, cleaned a few contacts with isopropyl alcohol and it worked!!

    I have a Dell Venue 7140 and this video gave me the courage to open my keyboard and modify the hinge! So, yes, it's possible to increase the lean angle. Remove the hinge (3 screws on each side) and wire connectors on both sides. Remove the shaft nut (do this one side at a time so that you can use the other side as a reference for the angle and the hinge friction/resistance). Then remove the outmost washer and move the hinge mechanism 1 or 2 mm outwards to give your dremel space to work. Use the dremel and chisel off some material on the inner part of the shaft, the part that makes the hinge stop at a specific angle. I probably took off less than 1mm material, increased the angle by maybe 15 degrees, but I then found out the limiting factor is the hinge backpiece rubbing on the keyboard bottom plastic (so don't chisel off too much material). The end result was great, using math I calculated the angle to 38 degree (or 128 if you will) and still not tip-over-critical.

      @technobrend0 9 років тому

      Harri Harju Interesting, I'll have to try that. I just removed the bottom of the keyboard to disconnect the battery (and this got my keyboard working again.... for now). It was assumed that the reason for the low lean angle is due to the weight of the tablet part being too heavy and thus too much of a lean and the keyboard would tip off the desk. However it looks like you've found a little more room to work with.
      Since my keyboard is now already compromised looks like this little "mod" is something I might just try. I just got a new dremel (knockoff brand) last week. Time to put it to use!

    • @technobrend0
      @technobrend0 9 років тому

      Did the mod. Took about 5 min total once I had the keyboard opened and the hinge assembly removed. I kept the nut on and used one of the cut-off wheels to just trim the little tab that limits the hinge travel. Now the hinge turns and turns and turns....ect freely. The only limiting factor is the hinge hits the body when opened far enough. That plus right around that vicinity the entire unit Really wants to tip backwards.
      So far so good. Very happy with the results. It leans JUST enough to make viewing comfortable. Totally FREE mod, took nothing but some time....

      Do you think this device is still worth buying in 2021? The same model (with extra battery in the keyboard dock) can be bought now for around 280 euros. I am looking for an ultraportable Win10 laptop and this Dell looks great due to the full HD screen with IPS panel (mostly it's just HD panels they use).

    Disconnecting the battery on my unit resolved the trackpad not responding issue.
    My situation started after charging the keyboard directly via micro usb.
    Must be due to some update over the lifetime of the product.
    During the initial purchase of my 7130, I know I charged the keyboard multiple times on it's own. Last case rendered it useless until I removed the battery cable for 30 seconds.
    Thanks for the video and your time!

    I bought a used keyboard dock on ebay. When I got it, my Dell Venue 11 Pro(7130) wouldn't recognize the battery & it wouldn't let me charge my tablet while docked. The keyboard worked fine. So I started researching online about this problem. I tried various 'fixes'. None worked. I even tried the fix mentioned in the video above. Didn't work. So I kept searching online. I found a thread on the Dell support blog. It said to re-load the most current BIOS while the tablet is docked to the keyboard. I tried it. And sure as hell it worked! I hope this helps some of you looking for a fix to your keyboard battery problem.

    Venue 11 Pro 7140 here. This video seems to have fixed my issue. The 2nd battery was detected and everything keyboard/trackpad related was showing in the device manager but nothing was responding to touch/key press. After taking the keyboard apart and re-seating most of the wires the issue is fixed. I also updated the BIOS for good measure but I don't think it changed anything related to this.

    I would be grateful if you could suggest any solution in my issue. I just bought a used keyboard for my 5130 tablet. Keyboard keys and touchpad works fine when attached to tablet. But the battery is not recognized in windows 10. The status is "Battery 2 not present" in Dell's power manager and "The battery is not available for use" in windows power manager. Moreover the battery is not detected in BIOS. I have charged the battery from its mini-USB port and seems to be charged ok (white led during charging). The battery is only detected on the dell's diagnostic test and shows its remaining charge (e.g 91% when i run the tests) and "n/a" in the health status.
    I opened the keyboard and disconnected/reconnected the battery. When battery is disconnected, the keyboard and pad does not work. When reconnecting the battery they work fine but still the battery is not recognized

      This is fairly old so I'm sure you've moved on, and have fixed this. But in the event someone stumbles on this I would like to provide them with the information to fix it. At the time of your posting the keyboard would not self charge. Which means once it dies its dead until you charge it separately. They came out with a BIOS update that then fixed that issue. However, the PC can still only charge the battery from 1%-90% so you have to charge the dock separately until it hits at least 10% or it won't work.
      I had this exact problem a few months ago when I found that solution. Currently I'm experiencing other peoblems, and that's how I stumbled upon this.

    I just solved my battery not found problem by updating from BIOS A13 to A14, just released, while the tablet was docked in the keyboard. The Dell diagnosis tool which could be invoked during boot shows the detailled battery status like charge level, health, voltage and current. Before the charging led was sending a morse code like 3x red 1x white, now it is stable white, still chargin in Win10. The communication with the 2nd batter now seems really to work, so this was a software problem with some deadlock situation.

    • @MichaelWebber
      @MichaelWebber 6 років тому

      I've seen the 3x red 1x white morsecode on my 7440/keyboard as well! I blamed it on the 7740! I think I'll try another keyboard on it, one that has a working battery (the problematic combination has a "dead" battery, although now I'm thinking it's a battery firmware update issue). My BIOS already got bumped to A15 (with the keyboard NOT attached, regretfully). Do you have any suggestions how to upgrade the battery firmware at this late stage?

    I recently got a Dell Venue 11 (7140) along with the Mobile Keyboard with the internal battery. The keyboard itself worked as expected but the Venue tablet did not recognize the keyboard battery, In fact the tablet only showed Battery #2 charging and Battery #1 as not available, with or without the keyboard attached. Pretty strange? However my fix came after upgrading the BIOS (A01 to A11) while the keyboard was attached. And now everything seems to work. Hope thus helps someone else. Thanks.

    Unfortuately, opening the keyboard shell is the way to fix this, even though its a SW issue. Good how-to video on opening the shell. To restore touchpad operation, open the keyboard shell, dock the keyboard to the tablet, disconnect the keyboard battery connector, then reconnect the connector. Keeping the keyboard docked to the tablet while you disconnect and reconnect the keyboard battery is essential. That resets the bit that connects the keyboard battery to the touchpad. To keep the touchpad from failing in the future, only recharge the keyboard battery while it is docked whenever the keyboard battery power drops to 0%.

      Seconded. Bought a refurbished Czech keyboard from eBay for a Dell Venue 5130. When it arrived I connected to the Venue 11. All worked, except the battery showed as not present. A quick google found a Dell article saying that if the battery in the keyboard drops too far, you will see this, and the Dell solution is to charge the keyboard directly from its micro-USB connector. Did this, and sure enough the second battery then showed up when I next docked it and was now charging through the Venue 11 itself. BUT, no trackpad. This worked before I charged it directly and as others have reported, this can break the Trackpad functionality. Left and right click still worked, but could not move the cursor. I have two Venue 11s (1x5130 and 1x7139) and also 2 keyboard so I was able to prove it was not an issue with the tablets themselves as both worked fine with my original (UK) keybaord. Firmware, updates, SynaFxUtil - nothing worked. This video set me on the right path. All I did was disconnect the internal battery in the keyboard WHILE docked to the tablet. Didn't adjust any other cables. Waited 30 secs. Reconnected keyboard battery, rebooted and yay!, keyboard and trackpad working and battery still available. I firmmly believe the direct charge of the keyboard initially caused this issue. Thanks to OP and Robert Jackson for the info.

    Did this permanently fix the keyboard for anyone?
    I have one of these and the whole thing stops working regularly.. The connection of the keyboard does trigger the tablet/desktop mode switching in windows 10, and the second battery connects fine, but neither the keyboard or mouse works..
    Opening the keyboard and pulling the battery, then reconnecting it always fixes it.. but it will go wrong again in a week or so.. Its getting to the point I leave the screws out so i can pry it open as needed.. Not a great fix.
    I'm wondering if i can somehow add an external switch that will cut the power from the battery off, which seems to reset something inside the keyboard.. And if so.. which wire should i be hooking that into.. the battery seems to have a lot of connections for its monitoring functionality..

    Does anyone know if OS version or keyboard firmware version makes a difference here? I am running the latest firmware for the keyboard, all drivers. Windows 10... Everything up to date. I think from reading elsewhere online that the problem were facing here is probably a hardware one and its not firmware / driver dependent. Sucks.
    Then again maybe it could be something fixed with a newer firmware, but at this poing does Dell still care. This tablet, despite being great is getting a little long in the tooth...
