I have done some extensive testis on what its the nest Portrait photography angle. To do this we used some science (we use that term lightly) by adding a number of very specific control points. This allowed us to find out what the perfect portrait photography angle is. I think you are going to really enjoy the findings here. Our desire we to find the best portrait photography settings and the best camera setup for portraits.
In this Portrait Tutorial and Headshot tutorial we talk through the best camera settings and then how we used control points to test or theories using the science of photography.

Photos In Color why did you use the 6 foot, 2 foot, and 8 inch measurements? Were these for a specific reason? Would they be different with different focal lengths? I'm wondering more about the 2 foot and 8 inch measurements. Is there some type of formula to calculate these measurements for different focal lengths?

Photos In Color hey buddy can you tell me in all the photos her hair fragments are actually blur and not looking good from below her eyes till her shoulders to the sides...how do you fix that or how to make them look glossy with more contrast and sharpened???? Please!!

I am an old school photographer. I'm intrigued by your test and your explanation and conclusions. For me there is no 1 perfect angle for a portrait. I always take into account the persons individual facial features, and that determines my angle and camera height. Also what kind of a mood am I try to set and what is my end goal...is it a business portrait, a senior portrait or is it a more commercial shoot. I also use different angles and heights for men and women. Some other things I look at is the shape of the face...is there an outstanding feature I want to highlight...or perhaps something I would try to downplay. All of these things go through my head as I am talking to the client. Again, I am old school, pre-photoshop...you had to get it on film...there was little that could be done once you clicked the shutter.
Anyway...sorry for the long post...and I do enjoy your videos and value your opinions.

Hi Rob, thanks for your review here. It's very refreshing to once in a blue moon you see some comments that use criticism in a professional manner with respect even though you might not share the same point of view as the author. For what is worth, I also agree with you saying that there is no no.1 perfect angle in a photo as it is a perspective of what the photographer is trying to portray.
Photographers who rely on photoshop more than skills to make great photographs tend to be less skilled at photography due to their dependency. Photoshop is a tool but many unskilled photographers think it's their lifeline. This photographer seem to be very skilled but his scientific experiments is lacking some.

I'm so pleased you concluded with no. 11. As a model, I take a lot of portraits and when I'm training photographers, I always advise them to be at eye level with me, I can give the lense direct eye contact and many variations of raising my chin, lowering my chin and rotating the shoulders. And we're always satisfied with the results, the catchlight in the eyes and no distortion of forehead, nose everything looks spot on. A fantastic video!!!! New subscriber here :-)
If I at some point end up getting my first "mugshot" or what ever it is, I want there to be "added bit of innocence".

The shoulder point out with the position of the camera and more lighting in the eyes with number 6 was educational. Camera higher making the model look up, puts that light more in the eyes with 6. You did a good job. Thanks.

WOW! THANK YOU. Really cool video man. Love the experiment you have done and spared me a lot of effort going to do these myself to find a good angle. I do however would like to make a suggestion that the lighting on the experiment should stay on the same angle to the face. The pictures to the side tend to be more attractive in my opinion as I like a bit more shadows in my own pictures. I am a little biased to like the Dutch masters a bit more on portraits.
MY FAVOURITE: will be 5/10 or 7/12(depending on the mood of the picture, innocent/fresh or more dramatic). Figuring out the light on the face with shadow balance I like and turning the body away from the main light source to add more focus to the face.
TO THE HATERS: Definitely not hard rock science, but one of the better experiments on UA-cam. Can't expect physics ethics here. Go sit in the corner cynics, go criticize the science they use in the health industry where science matters.

After carefully listening to your findings, I am truly intrigued. I could actually learn a lot from you. I would say that for me it is a matter of what purpose the model has for the photos in the first place. This example is a great starting point for me. Without a doubt you have probably forgotten more than I currently know. GREAT job.

It's a nice test but it doesn't have much to do with science.
If the model might have certain features that look better from another angle.
Also there is a lot of micro expressions going on which really changed my opinion about some of the images.
But it's good to explain how to create the dynamics.

I found this video very very interesting. I have never thought to move myself so much around my subject (beside up and down). Instead I always used to focus on the models position and ask them to move. These simple tips increases a lot the possibility to get different looks with easy movements. Thank you so much ED !!!
I found this interesting and enjoyable.If you google image search Hollywood Head shots , the female and youth images tend to be shot from a high angle looking down, often with the female model placed at a tilt or asymmetrically in the photo. It does add the innocence factor and can make an older model look more youthful.A straight on face at eye level tends to be a more powerful and less used pose for a female model. Adult male models tend to be shot straight on or from below to imply power or authority. Obviously head shots are used for more than just getting a job in Hollywood but the theories apply. When shooting a model for a head shot I try to find out what image they want to portray. This determines the angles I will shoot from. Not science but it works for me.

I think the graph with your findings is very helpful. It can give the photographer a general outline to enhance whatever feel they are trying to portray.

This was a nice analysis overall and I guess that both you and the model put a lot of effort in this video. However, you ended up with saying "I think, for me...", which this really was all about. I'd say that the last part of the title is a little bit misleading. No science was involved here, just a personal opinion. Also, let's say that we agree that the position #11 is the best one. Will it also be the best one when you have another model (a man, an old person, a child, a model with different skin color...), or when you have slightly different lighting setup, or different lens or camera settings? Will it be the best angle in each occasion, or only if a photo is needed for a passport, or for a CV, or for a fashion magazine? This was really interesting to watch and it really did give me some ideas about how different angles work and what I could expect, but I wouldn't say that I am convinced that there is only one angle which is THE best.
You are 100% correct. There is no one best angle which is why I say ‘I think’. The idea here was to test with parameters and then discuss the results. I’m really pleased that the video did as intended which was to give you thoughts and oceans while leaving questions. This is why photography is a beautiful art form. It’s I’ll with subjective opinions. Happy you tuned in.
Yes! Its was a scientific results. Analysis with data was a science method but was not an arts😊 Great video
As you said different positions of the camera for different looks, the only thing that I would have done differently would have to been to bring the octopod slightly nearer to the camera and tilted slightly more to the model thus eliminating the slight shadows that were under her eyes.

interesting video and analysis, I happen to agree with you and like #11 best also. question though on the lighting, how far away from her were the ocotobox and strip light, and was the octo directly above the strip? also I'm curious what your ration was, power of the light in the octo vs the strip. maybe a lighting diagram would help some
That was interesting. This model looks beautiful from the side. Look at no. 4 and 16 positions. Stunning looks.
A lot of people did not listen to what was said. I thought it was interesting to see the different angles well done.
Excellent video. Learned loads. Normal convention would have you have your camera 8-12 inches above the models eye level and I do feel if the models had a broader face, a little height, even at 16 inches above eye level might be more flattering. Thanks again for the video, it helped put things into perspective for me.
The 'science' of all of this is making sure you get a shot the client will pay for. The magic is to do it in a way that is your own, the art is to do it consistently.
You are a good aurguement to prove a point that there is a science to getting a good portrait but I have to agree that at best, this is incomplete science. Keep it up, repeat the experiment with another control change, add male models, male and female business people, etc. Is it science? Not yet, but it's a good start!

Science is at different levels.
Someone may explain the science to make a good cup of coffee. Big deal, I'm not going to challenge their use of the word science!
In this case , our gracious host has gone to great lengths to show me something I didn't have to lift a finger to do! And the interesting results, I can decide on.
He did it using a calculated "street science". This is like a well put together science fair demonstration.
Lots of measured work. ( Though a bit arbitrary, I honestly don't care.) And showing the periodic table of results.
Yes, the title is a bit misleading, but if any of us actually thought we found photographic nirvana by clicking here, who's the one who needs a reality check?

A great video. With as much control as you can with a live model. I agree with one of the below posters though (old school, too I guess); it depends on the model her facial features, her best side, etc. Your model is beautiful, but I think your center picture makes her face look to thin (#11). Also she has great eyes and those aren't open enough in many of the pictures. My personal favorite for a strait on is probably #15. Great eyes, head position, hair. #13 & 14 are also good for that reason. Like the dropped shoulder poses also. I think the left is her best side, but she can go both ways. It's hard to get everything perfect at the same time. As you know you just have to shoot a lot, or get lucky.

Hi Greg! I recognize this experiment is very useful. I agree with you on what you called the T shape as the best settings (5, 6, 7, 11). However, I liked all the pics of the these two central lines (4 to 13). Especially, 4, 9, 8 and 13 show a darker background which is a plus outcome of the experiment. Regarding the uppermost and lowest lines, don´t disregard them, because they show a different perspective of the model which might be useful depending on what the person´s interest is or the purpose of the photograph. Let´s say you want to hide the chest, use the lowest line settings. For the opposite, use the uppermost line settings.
My congrats for getting and sharing this knowledge obtained by observation and testing of facts, which is a definition of science!

i loved the whole 11 line horizontally they all look natural and the t is good and the bottom 3 will too work for me but for sure as your analysis is quite accurate though

Great video! I really enjoyed your observations and will use some of them when I take portraits. The one thing that bothered me about the straight-on #11 shot was the shadows under her eyes. I noticed you had her tilt her chin outward in one of the shots, so that would also need to be included as a variable in each position. Tilting her head up would obviously reduce or eliminate those eye shadows. Keep making these great videos!
You know what I think? You did a wonderful job. Agree on the dynamics. But Art has no thumb of rule. It's just art. Creativity and seeing what nobody else sees. But for plain photography you scheme seems to me a very helpful tool. Thank you for you effort and vibe anyway.Cheers.

Interesting findings. There is in fact differences in how we see people's portrait depending on the angle from which the camera is shooting from. Of course some people will not understand the significance of this. Like I see in the comment.

not a load of rubbish but not really something i can use since the head shape, neck shape profile and hair make usually dictates what angles look the best for me to shoot in a studio setting.
- plus i plan in advance the degree of dynamic/honest, etc "look" i want and that usually comes more from makeup hai and clothes rather than position
- the effects on the shoulder angles was my best takeaway; never considered that b4 :-)
