Hi Folks! I made this cake today, and I used a carrot cake mix instead of yellow, because that's all I had, besides chocolate mix!! I used canned caramel apple pie filling instead of regular apple filling, also because that is all I had. My "This Is All I Had" Dump Cake came out fantastic. The carrot cake mix was spicy with bits of carrot and raisins in it, and the caramel apple filling added an extra layer of flavor. I did add more apple pie spice and It really added that extra zing of flavor.
Hi! Thanks so much for letting everyone know that you made it. The carrot cake mix and caramel apple pie filling sound like they'd be amazing together. Once again, thanks for watching, baking, and commenting! 🍎🍏😀

Hi Parnell, wow I am loving this. I love the cinnamon ginger and nutmeg in it . I can imagine the beautiful aroma in your home and I bet it tasted so so amazing. Everything is better with butter too by the way. I love the amount of ingredients you used I bet it was perfect
Hi Parnell! I love how easy this is to make! I have always wanted to make a dump cake or something similar because they seem really easy to make and turn out delicious. The spices and the lemon zest you added were perfect additions to this cake 🙂
Thanks for this. I tried this today. It was a little too buttery for me. I might try to melt the butter next time and carefully drizzle it on the topping.
I'm sorry to hear you found it too butter. Like you said, carefully drizzling some melted butter over the tope might make it better. Let me know if you give that a try 👨🍳😀
Anyway you can simplify the holidays is a plus, so we can totally see ourselves making something like this. And Nabol is a fan of apples so this would be perfect. We would add some spices too. That's some perfectly cut butter, Parnell. Looks quite good.
Hi, Parnell! Dump cakes are the best, you can't beat them for how easy they are. I like to use spice cake with the apple sometimes. If I wasn't dieting, 2 sticks of butter all the way! Lol I like how you added the lemon juice. I am the same way and like to add some spices to jazz them up! Drizzling melted butter is how I do it but I think your method of placing the butter in slices on top is a great idea! It looks delicious, I'm glad you enjoyed your first dump cake! 🍎
Sure seems like an awesome cobbler! You make this look really easy to whip up and it must just be so tasty, perfect for Thanksgiving! Love your ideas, nice work!
YUMMM… I’m like you I like to use yellow or white cake mix. Love that you added extra spices to make it taste more homemade. Looks so delicious. Happy Thanksgiving
Hi, Mark! I think you could add the turbinado sugar, but depending on your tastes, it might make the dump cake too sweet since both the cake mix and apple pie filling have sugar in them. If I were to add turbinado sugar, I would probably add it on top of the butter. If you take a look at my old-fashioned, double-crust fruit pies here on my channel, I almost always add 2 Tablespoons of sugar (1 light brown, 1 white) on top of the crust. It caramelized slightly in the oven, toning down the sweetness. It adds a bit of extra sweetness and a good amount of crunch.🍎🍏🍰👨🍳🧈
Hi, Gloria! That's a good question. Technically, yes, but it will be very difficult to distribute it evenly. If some of the cake mix doesn't get any butter, it's going to turn out very dry. Honestly, I think that laying the slices of butter on the top like I show in the video is probably the best way, or maybe freezing the butter, grating it on a cheese grater, and then sprinkling it on top. Let me know what you decide to do and how it turns out! 👨🍳😎🙂
Hi, Kevin! No, I have not--but that is definitely an interesting idea! A spray bottle would help distribute the butter evenly...if you give the spray bottle a try, please let me know how it turns out--I, along with all the other UA-cam chefs, would be curious how it turns out. Thanks for watching and commenting!👍😀
Yes, 1.5 hours is a long time. I baked it so long since one side didn't seem to be browning very much. Most of my other dump cakes I bake at 350F for 1 hour, so maybe it would have been 1hour and 15 minutes for this one if both sides had browned evenly. All ovens are different, but I would take a look at 1 hour and see how it's doing. I don't see it taking less than 1 hour, so my guess is 60-75 minutes. Let me know how your dump cake turns out! 👍😀
Can we MELT the butter, BLEND it thoroughly into the cake mix -- and then SPREAD it evenly over the pie filling? This might be simpler & quicker -- but would this method ruin or diminish the TASTE of the cake layer?
Hi, Ramon! That's a great question. I've never tried it, but my guess is that the topping wouldn't turn out as crispy or crumbly as it does by placing small pads of cold butter on top. I know this is a cobbler, not a crumble, but the texture of the topping is similar to a crumble, and most crumble recipes call for mixing in cold butter, not melted, due to fears that melted butter would change the texture. Like I said, this is a good question. Someone would have to try one day to see how it would work out. So, in short, my chef instincts tell me that mixing the cake mix with melted butter and then spreading it over the filling wouldn't give you the same results...but it'd be an interesting experiment. Let me know how your cobbler turns out!🍎🍏
Hi! Some of my recipes are printable on my website parnellthechef.com. There's a link to the article for this recipe in the description box, but here it is again if you need it: parnellthechef.com/apple-cobbler-with-cake-mix-and-pie-filling/ I hope that helps!👨🍳
Hi, Luz! I have never used peaches, but I have seen similar recipes calling for canned peaches or peach pie filling, so I am sure you could. If using canned peaches, you might want to look at other recipes to see if people drain the juice or not. I am sure your cobbler will turn out great. Happy Baking!👍🍑😀
Why don't you gently mix all the apple and extra spice ingredients into a separate bowl before you DUMP it into the baking dish? I let the butter (2 sticks) come to room temperature and then in a separate bowl combine the butter and cake mix and gently combine into a crumbly mix, then cover the top of the apples, DON'T PAT DOWN! All the cake mix is covered with butter, it covers perfectly! (I use fresh apples it is always the perfect sweetness, no added sugar.)
Hi! I think you could mix the fruit filling off to the side, but then that would dirty a bowl. Some people might not consider this to be a true "dump" cake then, but I agree, that is a good idea. Mixing the butter and cake mix into a crumble is a good idea as well, but once again, it doesn't fit the normal definition of a dump cake recipe. Like I said, all of those are good ideas. If you make this recipe with the changes you have in mind, let me know!🍎🍏
Yes--I wanted to get the cake mix topping darker, so I left it in for longer. However, your oven might be different, so keep an eye on it after the one-hour mark. 🍎🍏👨🍳
Hi, Ron! I will have to check the other recipes to try to figure out why my baking time was longer. Maybe it's my oven...or the bit of lemon juice? I would keep an eye on it. Once the top turns golden brown and the filling starts to bubble up through a little bit, it should be done. Let me know how it turns out!🍏🍎👍
