Yoga Mat Insulation | UK Van Conversion

- Hey guys. In this video I finally talk about insulating my van conversion with yoga mats and take you through the process. I'm really, really happy with it and so far it's a big success. I'm actually quite shocked at how warm it is to touch even on frosty days, compared to the bitterly cold metal.
Products used:
Yoga mats - Decathlon
Spray glue - Toolstation
Foam underlay - Ebay - Авто та транспорт
I like your thinking out the box and doing thing’s different, great idea on the yoga mats. Wish I thought of that :) great vlog 😊
I only just stumbled across your channel, after watching your videos you've give me some great ideas for my swb vivaro and swb caddy.
👍 Thanks.
Ah that’s so great! Good luck with it! I’m coming to the end of this Movano build now. I need to get around to sharing more of the build footage
I just used a duvet filling for stuffing the beams and used the bubble wrap foil.
I slept in the van before and after the bubble wrap and I would say a massive improvement. Remember insulation is caused by trapping air. I would say 40-50% improvement and when the 4 way stretch carpet goes in, even more.
I’d be a little worried about a duvet getting moist, but yeah that is true, just covering the bare metal with carpet or cladding will make a huge difference to how warm and cozy it feels
@@vanvistas the duvet filling is trapped between the lining. Foil tap is good enough to prevent moisture getting in, plus the additional carpet lining over the foil barrier.
I done this to my van a thew years ago its ideal for summer climate insulation
Being a farm girl I was convinced you were going to use sheep's wool insulation. This looks like a good alternative and an extra level of sound deadening too.
WELL... did actually attempt to clean some sheep’s wool but I just couldn’t get rid of the smell and I couldn’t stand the thought of my van smelling like a shed, especially on a hot summer day. Apparently I’d have all the mice and moths in the van too, so I decided against it 😂 I might have to make a separate van build fails video later down the line 🙈
You can actually buy it on a roll and the smell is supposed to fade over time. But I'm not sure I would use it either.
Maybe it is only I that get irritated by wool very easily. I thought it would be a good idea to have a wool blanket and maybe it is the quality of the blanket that I bought. I had to leave it outside because the odor and the shed. My room is full of wool balls floating on my floor, they are like the dust demon from the animated movie Spirited Away making me cough constantly. Wool may not be a good solution for everybody but I kind think using yoga met for the roof is not very good too, thinking the sun is going to make that van like a oven and the smell of the robber lingering during sleeping hours. maybe and just maybe, a combination of the insulations may just do it.
I like your left field thinking, but is the yoga mat material fireproof? will it meet fire safety standards? Is your insurance ok with this insulation?
Yeah I've thought this, I see loads of expensive insulation going in then a whacking great skylight and loads of windows.
Did you add the foam to the doors for insulation? How is your van in colder climates? Are you having any problems with condensation?
I'm doing part of my van with camping mats which is probably the same EVA Foam. You didn't use the usual high temp contact adhesive, are you not worried that might come down in the summer heat?
A little! But I did use some of the high temp stuff in places and most will have cladding and ply stuck on top so it can’t really peal away. I may peel away the stuff on the roof slightly and add some more hard duty stuff before I put the roof cladding up. We’ll see. It’s all lasted pretty good so far
Is there any off-gassing from the yoga mats in the heat?
New sub here! 🙋🏻♀️. How has this insulation treated you since moving in? Effective against heat and cold?? I’m thinking I will probably go with foam spray, but I really like the look of the mats that you installed!
🏆🏆🏆
It’s hard to say because I don’t think you can ever stop a van from getting hot or cold, insulation just helps keep that hot or cold in/out for a bit longer. We have a Chinese diesel heater and it does a really good job of heating up the van. I’d say the yoga mats along with all the cladding and wood do a pretty good job, but I’d definitely use the high temperature spray glue if I did it again because some of the upper cabinets have melted away in hot sun, so they sag down a little
Nice! How has the insulation been in a hot summer weather and then on a cold winter weather?
I’m still really pleased with it. My main objective was to eliminate all bare metal, so there are no metal touch points in the whole living area. I haven’t done a full winter yet, but had a very cold spring in the alps and I think it’s performed just as well as anyone else’s. It’s hard to say, because we have a diesel heater, but I think it holds the warmth in pretty well. We also managed to avoid the heatwave this summer, so we’ve only experienced 30+ degrees a couple of times, but we don’t have air con so I don’t think there’s much you can do even with insulation, it’s still very sweaty 😅 I would definitely recommend using the high heat rated spray glue, because there are a couple of places inside the roof cupboards where they’ve pulled away slightly in the heat
How did they fair? Did you have any issues?
Really interesting idea. You're absolutely right about the bare metal, it's a big thermal bridge. We've been really wondering how much of an issue this metal can be.
£3 per yoga mat sounds like an absolute steal. Definitely worth going for the foil tape too.
On the doors, we've figured that the parts that meet the rubber seals needs to be metal to get the seal to, well, seal.
Super interested in how your insulation works out long term!
Have you noticed a difference in how the temperature feels inside now it's all decked out?
It’s definitely snug, but insulation itself isn’t really designed to change the temperature (just keep it in/out for longer) it’s mad how warm the foam is though, on a cold day for example, cold metal to touch is COLD but the foam is never cold to touch. I think I’d maybe have used the pricier thermal spray glue throughout though, has it has got a few bits of bubbling from very sunny. But I don’t think it’ll be an issue if all the edges are still sealed and the cladding is pinning it up anyway
The mats were from Decathlon!
@@vanvistas Hey, how's this insulation method holding up over winter? Also, what thickness were the mats? Looking on decathlon now there's no mats in that price range :(
What will you use the van for?
Travelling in is the plan
So will you be adding something over the top of this?
I won’t be adding any more insulation on top, but I’ll be covering all the walls and ceiling with plywood and lightweight wood cladding
@@vanvistas I pick up my l3h3 movano today. Woop.
How has this worked out for you?
Really well! Although I do also have a lot of wood in the van, which I think also helps keep in the warmth, and we have a diesel heater too, but covering all the metal touch points was definitely a great move, we’ve never felt any moisture in the van and it feels warm and snug with the bed against the back doors (also down to the carpet I stuck up there. I have a full Timelapse video and some shorts that show it all coming together), so I’m overall really pleased. HOWEVER in some of the overhead cabinets it’s pealed away and sagged and I think that’s because I used the cheapest spray glue and in the heat it’s just melted, you can get higher heat resistant spray glue though. The walls are all fine though as they’re pinned up with cladding
Probably want to stay away from cold weather
Very bad choice. Please do some research about toxicity of this material, especially in such small place like car. How do I know? I had some PVC protective mats (very similar to yoga mats, just thicker) in my work van, and when weather was very hot I was getting strange chemical smell inside van and starting to get some asthma symptoms. It all gone after I got rid of these mats. So please rethink this idea ;)
That’s interesting. I think I’m more concerned over the spray glue that’s sticking them up rather than the foam itself. It didn’t smell today in the warmth, but will be interesting to see further down the line
