Hey folks! Hope you enjoyed the video! Show Devin some love over at @devin.st1 on Instagram! And of course, let's discuss! What do you guys think? Why do car people still love stick shift?
Gears and Gasoline okay, like first of all, I think this is the best produced film I've ever seen on UA-cam, I shit you not. Second of all, that is one badass Ford -- does he get shit for that license plate in front? Lastly, I don't know what it is: I grew up on sticks but after my first automatic, I stuck to automatic. Maybe I got lazy or I feel like it's "luxury" to have an automatic. But I know this: when I drive my buddy's GTI (which is stick), it's as if I never forgot how to shift. I do it effortlessly, like riding a bicycle. And it's a blast!
Gears and Gasoline for me stick will always have a special place in my heart because my dad taught me how to drive in a manual Hyundai Elantra. I remember when I first started I hated it but kept at it mostly because he force me but I’m glad he did because now I love it and can’t see myself driving automatic.
in the US you should mention. Focus IV is selling very well in Europe. In Romania, you would have to wait 90-100 days if you want to purchase a customized configuration focus.
Americans want big, gas guzzling SUV's. Cars just aren't selling here. I drive a manual Fiesta. Want an ST, but have other things I need to spend money on.
@@JoshuaTootell How do you like your Fiesta? My dad's going to teach me to drive manual, but I can't borrow his car forever to practice (I'm 34 years old and obviously don't live at home anymore lol). So, I'll need to buy my own manual. I'm a Toyota fangirl, and had a manual Corolla in mind. But at $12,000, the Fiesta is so inexpensive and awfully tempting. It's $10,000 less than the Corolla. I don't need anything fancy, I just need a manual that isn't too difficult for a beginner.
Very true. Another thing - I’m a huge fan of EVs but one thing that frustrates me is all the vids of Teslas beating people at the drag strip. They don’t even have to do anything, there’s no skill. A heavy enough brick could race an automatic or EV. But then the race is about who has more money
Excellent video, I can relate. I drove only stick from age 21 to 55, then bought an automatic. After 5.5 years I sold the automatic and went back to a stick, a month shy of my 61st birthday. Will drive nothing but stick as long as I'm physically able.
@@outwiththem I wish my dad knew this.. he is suffering through it now. Just found out over a year ago and only getting worse. Its the worse thing to see my dad not knowing anything anymore, and pretty much blind.. its hard to watch him go through this.
Downshift from 3rd to 2nd as you make that left turn through the intersection, weight transfers to the front of the car, lightens the rear as you get back on the gas, executing a glorious power-side. Redline 2nd back into 3rd. You and the machine are one.
@@lolvovolvo I think you are mistaking "automatic robotic" and "automatic/manual sequential" gearboxes. -It is not possible to execute what G V described in a robotic gearbox unless in a special race/sport mode allowing for instant downshift and rev matching to red zone when a "low rev threshold" would be touched during deceleration which would be really bad when you would be drifting in a curve or taking a tight corner because you don't want to constantly shift in this scenario. You'd just want to hit the rev-limit breaker (PA PA PA PAPA!) at maximum most of the time without going up and down 4 times in a row (loosing traction 4 times by the same way) because you sit in-between two speeds and can't be precise enough at the limit with all vibrations going through the car during a drift. It might work if you want to play exclusively grip and not drift... but I still doubt it and from what I can see in GT racing, they all use sequential paddle-shifters gearboxes. -If you want to skip a gear and to go from 4 to 2 (to prepare for a nasty turn by using a "double clutching") or to go from 2 to 4 (big acceleration until legal limits and going eco afterwards) your automatic robotic gearbox will never be able to understand it fast enough and will most of the time not skip the gear doubting on your intentions. A double clutch automatic (sequential in fact) can do it by double tapping the paddle but you will lack the connection between the pilot and the car, the feedback through your left feet when you engage the clutch allowing for the other feet to know he can engage the accelerator... this very feedback making you take more and more risks with it until you can accelerate right at the moment you engage the manual clutch! And sometimes even before for a "clutch kick"! How can a computer know that you want to "clutch kick" or not? The muscle memory allows you to know your car better than a computer stupidly awaiting for information from sensors and to be faster because you anticipate what will happen unlike it. -If the automatic robotic gearbox is not in "sport mode", it will not automatically rev-match (heel toe) for you when downshifting by reading your mind if you are driving in eco mode. You will have to press a button to switch modes before to indicate that you wish to empty your fuel tank. It will not downshift either unless the break pedal is pushed severely. A sequential automatic will rev-match in sport mode. Manual Civics to it. My brain do it on my manual mx3. -An automatic gearbox is always heavier than a manual. -If you forget in which gear you are in, you don't need to look at a screen and to ignore the road for a split-second with a manual. The position of the lever in your hand is enough information. After all that being said : -I would love to try a manual sequential gearbox from a WRC/X car with a manual clutch included for double clutching. -I would like to try a double clutch sequential transmission gearbox to see if I can do a U-turn fast enough. -I still prefer manual transmissions with short-shifters for the simplicity and effectiveness of the design allowing for fast shifting and light gearboxes. -I want the car to do what I want her to do when I want to do it.
"With the manual, you are more involved, with automatic you might as well be the passenger." -- Someone of UA-cam said that, and it sounded so right, so cool. Well someone had to say note it down.
I learned how to use a clutch on an old case tractor, when I was ten years old. its just.... what I am used to. I hate the way an auto trans corners. unless you shift the slushbox manually, and even then it is slow to shift most times. I am just more used to a manual, so auto's dont do it for me. I am sure I could practice and get good at driving a slush box, but why?
Even as a manual driver this is a pretty pretentious statement. Some people don't want to "drive" and just need it to get from A to B. You're only changing the gears ffs.
@@jessicabecause3717 well get a pedal cycle or train then! if people think that driving is just about getting from a to b, where is ur passion for driving, or trying to better urself as a driver?
The invention of the automobile itself was for the purpose of getting from a to b. Why do you think cars are where they are today? I have a passion for driving. I do it for a living and love it. As for you? I don't look down on others for not using manual. They have other passions and likely just need an auto to get there.
Because it enables us to play with the throttle which results in nasty engine sound while moving, something cannot be achieved by automatic car unless it's in neutral position. When I get annoyed by surrounding drivers or motrocyclists, I do that thing.
Have you driven a manual 2000 Chevy Corsa 1.3L? It does NOT feel like a race car. Each gear is a mile away from the previous one and the clutch is completely limp and keeps going down into the floor endlessly before disengaging. There are some serioualy boring and unengaging manuals, much like there are some surprisingly fun automatics out there.
Ricardo I drive an 05 civic manual and it’s like the cheapest model. It doesn’t even have v-tec lol. it’s still really fun to drive but that may also be because I’ve never driven anything much sportier
jrs_ 2000 Honda makes really good transmissions and good-handling cars, a GM economy car is everything a Honda economy car isn’t: Honda cares about their economy cars and making sure they’re not dreadful to drive, GM only cares about cars they can sell with an LS. So yeah, it really is your Civic’s virtue that it’s fun despite being slow, the same applies to Miatas and older BMW’s, they’re slow, but they’re made to be driven, and you can enjoy them because they have decent platforms. Get in a Corsa or a Fiat Palio and you’ll experience a driving experience that a manual gearbox couldn’t save.
I drive a manual because I'm not interested in texting while driving, and it makes my commute easier and more fun. So many hills and inclines in my city that I get involved with the car every minute and have much better control.
Why I want to drive stick: - They're more involved. - They're fun. - You look cool/smart doing it. - DRIFTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - Because almost nobody (in America) knows how to drive them, that means the third pedal is one of the best anti-theft mechanism's you can buy. - They can make your car thousands of dollars cheaper. - You don't need to yell at your car to shift up while it revs up to 5k and you can't do anything about it, you can just shift yourself.
wel i gotta admit if you have automatic without paddle shift or a manual at least you wont ever get that race feeling. since iv never took time to learn racing clutch tecnnique . so i went with paddle shift. Like what you say most poeple dont know how to stick shift efficently . me either. never learned if i ahd manual my tire would be slick now and id propbly get a thousand speed ticket lol Also since most poeple DO NOT push the clutch at 100% so i cant imagine a 2011 manual transmission to be in good shape... man clutch installation is like 1k here and u have oem lol
Your statement that almost nobody in America knows how to drive them is not exactly true. People under 30 maybe, I am 45 and when I grew up stick shift cars where a lot more prevalent. Almost all of your sporty cars and base model cars had sticks. A lot of pickup trucks were stick shift. I would say half of the base model trucks were stick shift. Ford Ranger pickups, S10 pickups , Nissan trucks (before the big Titan) etc etc . A big percentage of these trucks were stick. Mazda mini trucks back in the 80's and early 90's you were hard pressed to find one in automatic. Almost everybody I know in my age range and older know how to drive a stick.
Cooking is a great analogy, people who can't cook or are not good at it are the ones getting fast food and generally despise cooking. while the people who can actually cook are the ones who enjoy it so much more. Driving stick is no different. Those who do it well, experience an enjoyment level you cant get with fast food shifting autos.
Not really. People tell me I'm a great cook but I prefer fast food. I also drive stick perfectly and yet i prefer auto (altough I have stick). It's really just a personal choice. The car community keeps forgetting that not everyone who drives is a car fan. Some of the people just drive the cars. For them it's about the end not the journey to it.
Yea, that's totally true. I live in Bulgaria and 80% of the people here drive sticks. I've spoken to many people here why don't they drive manual, most of them actually said almost the same thing : " its not because im poor i can buy an auto, but when im driving a stick i feel like im more in control of the car. And its more fun. Its really dull driving an auto".
In Ireland, I’ve literally never seen anyone drive an automatic... My granny drives a manual, yet I hear people in UA-cam videos complaining about manuals in traffic and getting cramps and shit 😂
kuro neko 90% of us dont realize or care if most of your population drives manual or uses the inperial measuring system, because we’re comfortable with what we’re used to and its not important to us to know what country’s use “kilo” as a prefix to their measurements. We aren’t bad people or anything, we just dont realize how different other english speaking areas are from us, so we dont take into consideration the differences.
to be honest, after I turned 21, I hated getting older, I hate birthdays, I'm scared of graduating, scared of growing up, scared of the future... but after watching this video and getting into cars, it helped me see the world from such a different perspective. Life is so beautiful, and much to look forward to. I struggled with depression since I was young and only for a few years ago it's been getting a lot better. I feel like I'm slowly falling back into depression until recently I found out my dream car is finally for sale (about to purchase this Saturday). I feel like I've been given a second chance to live/cars saved my life... I'm now really excited how far in life when I can get in my car. I'm excited to meet my future friends who will have the same hobby as I do, I'm excited to find really close friends I can go cruising all night with, I'm excited to travel to different cities, states, countries in my car, I'm excited to go to car meets and make friends, I'm excited to upgrade and buy mods for my car, I'm excited to be free.. I'm excited to live life. I finally have something to look forward to, I finally have a goal, I finally have passion. I've been depressed for so long when I realized I no longer wanted to go into my major that I'm almost done with.. I felt like a failure, but now I feel like I have a new hope, new light. Thanks for making this video and sorry for venting. This video really touched me and made me realize how much I appreciate life
Hey man I am really glad you found something to keep you going. There’s definitely things that people struggle with but part of really finding happiness is learning that there are so many things to find it in. There’s millions of activities and hobbies that youll love and enjoy and theres so much you will do that no one else can. Im really glad that cars can be a part of that and I wish you the best with your dream car!
@@jackchristian9854 every country which use the metric system, build cars that can go fast AND take corners without killing anyone. where people drive mostly manual, and on the left side of the car LOL
@@jackchristian9854 also a country where you actually have to attend driving school and be tested by policeman to get driving licence, in multiple part test, theory, parkin lot course and city driving, wich alows for faster speed limits also, most europeans drive shift because they didnt broke down after 5 years
Another thing to consider is a driver can anticipate a better gear for upcoming conditions. I see a hill coming up, so I shift from 5th to 4th and build a little boost before barreling up the grade. Corner ahead? I’m going to want 3rd so I can power right out no fuss. It’s not about how fast you can slam though gears, it’s about control and hell yeah it’s enjoyable.
Jachin Rivers Finnally someone says it. I mean it really is a control factor. I hate when and automatic upshifts when it really isn't needed then you have no torque to climb that hill. Then it downshifts again. That can be a lot of wear on them clutch packs.
Flicking a paddle shifter with your finger will never compare to slamming into REVERSE in a real manual car. I'd still have manual over DSG. I love the smell of jerky parking and clutch wear in the morning.
As I live in Europe, I was driving manual only when I got my license. I heard many people say "once you try automatic, you will never want to shift again." Now I can say it's bs, manual feels so much better to me.
4212 S DSG + TSI is daddy mix I have a Seat ibiza 1.2 with DSG sure it’s a great car but my friend has a ford fiesta with Manual believe it or not it’s definitely more fun every time we come to a corner we Smile
I learned to drive a manual when I was 15 and getting ready to get my drivers license and it's helped so many times in the 6 years since. I've been able to drive so many vehicles just because I can shift gears myself. It's also nice to get compliments from others who never expect it. My old manager for instance, let me drive his '69 camaro (loved it) because I have experience. People don't get why I love driving a stick shift car so much but to me it's much more engaging and fun. Quite honestly I don't see myself giving up driving a manual until I no longer physically am able to.
or legally able to. EDIT: wait no, I've legit seen some Manual electrics out there, mostly converted S-10's, but the clutch still works and it can be shifted like normal, only real difference is there's no real need to clutch in or shift to neutral when stopping, and it can be driven as a single speed automatic if you just shove it into 5th and leave it there. otherwise, if you actually can drive stick, I'd imagine the acceleration of that thing would be insane
Love the analogy and awesome short film. Manual is cheaper to buy, cheaper to own, can make any car fun to drive. I notice manual drivers generally are more aware of their surroundings and make better driving decisions.
I like the manual transmission and I don't see myself driving an automatic anytime soon. And yes, I got the comparison between cooking and driving. It's makes perfect sense. With the world going auto, I'll be a rebel and stay manual as long as it's around. Awesome video. Love the ST😍
I've got the 5pot ST, and love it, but even Audi can't get the 5pot efficient, BUT I still love mine, That and the lack of 3 door is what put me off buying the new ST. guess with the performance so close they didn't want a 3 door focus killing the 3 door Fiesta ST market (non US Market)
There are actually some custom electric cars with a manual transmission. Just because the ice is going to did doesn't mean the car culture will go with it.
Albert S. Actually it's a lot lower than you think. Most of the electric race cars have multiple gear transmissions. They have a power band just like ices, it's just wider.
Albert S. Exactly. But that's what was being used back in the 60s for the exact reason. Engineering explained has a video on the subject I think. You should check it out. A lot of the ev race cars have transmissions. Yes it adds weight but it gives you a better use of the power band.
Kelly Grabill this is why the Tesla is quick but not fast, they top out at around 155 mph (I think) while similar ICE powered cars (similar 0-60 times) much have higher top speeds.
In germany it’s kinda mandatory to drive stick - you have to learn it for your drivers license, although you can get an automatic drivers license, nearly no one does that because you can’t drive any stick cars then
Also automatic isn't nearly as popular in Europe. That might be changing since automatic is available even on lower priced cars and got more efficient in general these days.
Hitting a straight section on a B road and dropping down 2 gears to fly past the car in front. Maxing out RPMs as you slam your way back up through the gears. Clutch, gear, power... clutch gear power. Throwing it through some s bends at high speed and then dropping down a gear before you turn into a tighter section and power out the other side within the peak power band... I just can't imagine driving an automatic and losing all that. I'll give it a go one day I'm sure. I just can't see it being as fun or engaging.
@Ginger Indeed! I love cars, but I'm all for renewable energy and less pollution. I haven't driven an electric yet, but I hope the acceleration makes up for the lack of gears a little bit! You're probably bang on about the oil companies and politicians preventing the industry moving on quicker than it is.
@Lil Kabob oh no, I'm not opposed to people doing whatever they're comfortable with. Im just saying for whatever reason it bothers me. I honestly have no idea as to why it just does. I have friends who shift in pretty different ways, but it's whatever.
True that my uncle is constantly texting while driving automatic. I drive manual, I don't have the time & effort to hold a phone. To busy shifting gears, also have to pay attention and plan when driving when to downshift/upshift, when to press clutch, go to N, etc.
LuizAbruz thats actually pretty sad that it didn’t make sense to you...this is the slow decline of the capabilities of humans. Started from intense efforts of our ancestors and now finally to effortlessness of life and it’s ways, but at the cost of not knowing what life really is like anymore.
@@MasterP48HD the city I live in have so many uphills & downhills, so you must calculate when driving not to mention the morons riding motorcycles & morons driving public transportation mini vans, it's like playing simulator game in real life. So fun driving manual.
Honestly, I almost look forward to traffic and hitting red lights with the 5-speed in my car. It gives me more chances to play with the stick and enjoy the fact that my car has one in the first place.
All the people saying it’s not a big deal have never even driven a car lol. When you get stuck in traffic jams for hours and your left and right foot feel like it’s about to go out any minute, manuals suck in that sense.
Each one has ups and downs. For instance, I would use A/T car on a daily basis (not every time but most time), like going to work, because in my city, we have a lot of traffic jams, and believe me, your legs will thank you. But for traveling far, or when I need to get fast somewhere, I pretty much would choose my M/T, because when I want to slip past by through some trucks in the highway, M/T car is just so much faster when you know the tricks of good shifting.
You would if your everyday trip to work is going through with traffic jams. And it is so stressfull when your cluch spring is stiff especially with powerfull car that needs a stiffer clutch for grips. I would buy both of them but everyday to work i would like a automatic one so thst im not going to over stressed my body. But for the enjoyment, maybe I'll choose automatic paddleshifted car. It's just my opinion :)
@@muhammadabdulrahmanabdulka3720 I agree with the traffic jams. My son's former 05 mustang had the stiffest clutch I've ever used. My leg got so fatigued and I was in normal traffic. My 2017 WRX has a stiffer clutch than I would prefer and is a pain in traffic jams.
Mr Wp gear missing is great 😂 doesn't do any harm unless you're low rpm in 3rd let's say and you change to 5th but then that's just being stupid, perhaps clumsy
Reasons Why I love stick: MAD skids, burnouts, drifting, it keeps me awake on long drives, the pulls man, engine braking, and it's theft prevention. Plus, the tachometer actually severs a purpose. If you can drive a manual, you can drive anything with wheels and an engine.
I remember having to get a Manual cherokee moved that had no tach. Never felt more nervous putting my foot on the gas, especially also after learning those things had no real rev limiter
Jacob the First and last knight This. I have a Genesis Coupe and you can put it in sport mode, turn off traction and stability control, and it's easier to spin tires in a CVT because you have more wheel torque than in a fixed manual gear. I think these enthusiasts haven't tried new automatics as much as they act like.
I prefer a manual over anything, even PDK. I could care less if they are more efficient or faster, it is about the experience behind the wheel, for me. That goes for driving on the street or racing, either one! Side note, I'm a girl, so manual transmissions aren't just for the guys 😜!
Yep! It really kills me that people don't care about manuals anymore! If they do away with them completely, I will just keep driving older cars! I even have an old Toyota truck and it's a manual and I love driving it ❤️!
Carpartment Life people do care think about there are thousands of people in the comment section and other videos driving manual fuck those folks who just drive a car to drive it boring ass watching paint dry ass mfs
In Europe most of the cars are manual. It just feels better, you have the control of the gears, and if you can shift correctly it drives faster and more economical
Fouzaan Noble theres something about cruising down the road making light slow shifts, relaxing. Then suddenly downshifting and slamming on the throttle and start flying down the road.
I agree, nothing beats grabbing hold of that stiff shaft, and giving it a good thrashing about, until you "arrive" at your destination, sweaty and satisfied.
Honestly at this point arguing that Manual Transmission is better than Automatic is like arguing that mechanical watch movements are better than quartz. One is meant to be used, the other is meant to be enjoyed. Quartz movements are just objectively better at telling time. A $20 Casio quartz watch will keep a far more accurate time than a $10,000+ Rolex. That's just fact. That doesn't mean the Mechanical watch isn't worth thousands of dollars, but the point of the Rolex is not precise timekeeping, it's about artistry and fashion, and functional beauty. The quartz watch is cheap, boring, not really meant to look that nice, it's just about telling time. That same difference applies to manual vs automatic, one is meant to be used, the other is meant to be enjoyed. At this point, automatics are just better at getting you from A to B, they are dead simple to use, efficient, and boring.
*Some automatics. Put a hot enough engine behind it and a shift kit, plus a lack of traction control and you can fairly easily chirp tires and just *PULLLLL*. Has to be a hot engine and the right trans tho. Stock Cavalier is... Ehhhhhhhh..
As Nicholas said, the watch analogy doesn't work here. A quartz is better in everyway. A manual car has the benefit of being cheaper and in some countries even have less tax due to being lighter. That's why you see a lot of cars with shifting indicators. You are still as efficient while being way cheaper to pay for immediatly and down the road.
Your analogy has some problems. 1. Stick shift is more reliable and takes longer to wear out and in some problem cases the problems can be subverted. 2. Stick shifters are cheaper. 3. Stick shifters keep more of the drivers FOCUS ON THE DARN ROAD. So in your actual analogy, The quarts is the manual. useful in all use cases. Reliable when used how it is intended. Cheaper. And also does all the things that the 2000-3000 euros more costing automatic transmission does and in more extreme cases does it better. And when that change is done your analogy makes perfect sense. Automatics are for looks and comfort not for utility. They are more expensive.
Actually the point of a Rolex or an Omega is extremely precise time keeping, which is why a high quality mechanical Swiss watch will have a jewel, like a Ruby, whereas a cheap one will have a quartz. Quartz clocks are actually very poor at correct time intervals because of impurities in the sand. This becomes painfully obvious in servers where the clock crystals are Quartz, which is why every correctly configured server will synchronise his time with an external time source over NTP protocol.
When you hit that perfect shift! I so felt you when you said that. The comparison was spot on. Now I need to learn how to cook. I have a manual Honda Accord, and the feeling you get is so rewarding. It is like your car is an extension of yourself. You and your car are one.
Being from Britain, where the statistic is kinda the reverse, driving an Auto here is something you do if you're either dumb, disabled or old. Long may that school of thought remain
I think with the UK, where if you do your test in an auto you can only drive auto. That gives people incentives to learn to drive manual. I think the only real reason why people don’t drive autos a lot here in the UK is cost, if you’re getting an automatic, you’re talking an extra £1,500-£3,000 extra on a car. Another reason why is most old cars have manual gearboxes, which pushes young people into driving a manual because when you first pass your test its so much cheaper to insure. However, now the government is pushing electric cars, manual cars will go down in numbers. With electric, there isnt any point in having a manual gearbox. So more and more people will be getting auto. My instructor said this to me when i told her i was thinking of doing my test in an auto “Driving a manual is like learning to ride a bike, once you know how to do it, you won’t ever forget how to drive manual.”
Dariune also cheaper to repair/modify a manual transmission, such as by installing a stronger clutch when your modified engine starts producing more power than the stock clutch can handle...
Automatics are cheaper maintenance wise. Until you have to replace your trans that can give out after 200k but with sticks you've probably had to replace your clutch multiple times and repair cost wise almost equals the same because of that. Unless the auto trans just completely craps out.
Yah several times depends of how hard you drive your car some people have to replace it after 60k miles...it can last a while if you don't drive so hard...not full of shit...you realize there is a thing called google right? learn how to use it cause you seem like your the one full of shit.
Honestly only tried manual once as I'm a learner in WA and I love it, driving auto makes me forget that I'm driving, makes me sleepy and black out but with manual. I'm more awake, I engage with the car and people are safe because I'm awake
just a guess but mby a imitation of "short shifting" :D. or hes just bored of shifting like you should do. actually its giving you a another feeling shifting like this. i dont say i shift everytime like this but mby 2 -3 times out of 1000 gear shifts, sure...
While it is funny to look at and fun to poke fun at, I believe he was shifting into reverse with a lock-out, so he has to do it like that since he doesn't have 8 inch fingers.
Yes this is true. If i drive a matic i felt like, Its just a moving car, But when i drive an manual stick, I felt like there is more fun and you will really feel that you're in a race track as always. And you feel that it's fun to adjust gears everytime. Its really cool
Why is everyone praising the analogy? TV dinners are generally worse than home-cooked meals. Sure some people might cook for fun, even if their food tastes worse than a microwaveable meal, but I'd argue that the vast majority prefers home-cooked meals over frozen ones because the taste is better.
Only in america is stick shift not the most common thing. Youre a nation that is taking their license with automatic. its unheard of in Denmark and alot of countries in EU.
Put an American in a stick shift car and 90% of them are totally lost and will not be able to operate it even somewhat gracefully. Europe is still manual-oriented and -dominated. About 70% of our new cars are manuals.
Chris polewarczyk nope, it's because we aren't lazy and fat. Even the analogy shows a perfect example of America. A prepared meal that's healthier than a home cooked one? Don't make me laugh
Chris polewarczyk how could I forget when every American tries to remind me about it. But tell me, how are you superior. Because you have the biggest military? Good job on you guys for not being able to drop a Neanderthal attitude and having the biggest stick. You also have one of the highest national debt in the world, and highest average debt per person. The highest percentage of fat people. The biggest difference between rich and poor. Racism at an all time high. Very high murder rate for a "developed" country. Very high suicide rate... and I could go on for a while. But congrats on you for being superior.
I like manual transmissions too , in sporty or muscle type cars.I’m one who still likes big cars, you know the things that people could choose to buy before anti car leftists came to power. These zealots are now not only scheming to take away private ownership of cars (manual and otherwise) they’re hell bent on forcing you to take a bus or at least an electric self driving module they’ll let you call your car
Really, I don't get what the video is trying to say. It's the whole logic versus emotional argument problem. They say that vehicle technology has all ready developed to the point that modern automatics are significantly smoother and more fuel efficient, but manuals are better because it feels cool. Pretty much all the arguments people have in favor of manual drive has been negated, and the best argument for it now is feeling connected to your car. If a person prefers manual over automatic, that's great for them. Not everyone is looking to micromanage their driving or needs to feel like they are one with their machine. And that's okay as well. Some mechanics can tell something is wrong by how their wrench feels on a bolt. Doesn't change the fact that the wrench is just a tool and the true skill is in the operator.
Yep, here in the UK you have to pay more for an automatic gearbox. That's why nearly everyone has a manual. It's nothing to do with being broke - if you can buy a manual Golf R or an automatic Polo for the same price, which would you choose? I know it's an exaggeration but you get my meaning.
This is obviously meant for an American audience where most cars here are auto and it's sometimes difficult to find a decent manual car depending on your price range.
Everything you said was correct, but you have to know that the location also plays a big part on manual transmissions. Let’s say in a stop and go situation, your legs will get tired of pressing the clutch pedal over and over again when you want to get going again. So a automatic transmission is better. But for less populated areas were traffic is low and road is open, the manual transmission can bring enjoyment to the driver.
INR Motorsport How do you get going in an automatic? You let go of the left pedal. How do you get going in a manual? You let go of the left pedal. They're really not that different. Want to go into neutral? Foot on the left pedal. Out of neutral and into gear? Foot on the left pedal. Doesn't matter if you are driving a manual or automatic.
i've been driving manual transmission car for all my life and i have driven automatic as well and when it comes to traffic, i have been in narly situation in both transmission. the thing about automatics are that after a while they tent to get boring, but never felt bored in manual transmission. And i have been in situation where i was stuck for hours in traffic but never get tired of pressing clutch, even in stop go traffic.
As a professional cook, who drives a manual BRZ to work every day, I’m careful with my process in the kitchen, as well as on the road. Focus is the key. Trust the process. Most importantly: have fun.
I learned to drive back in 1970 in my dad's 67 Volkswagen Beetle, and as the years went by I always felt the stick shift was just more fun and engaging at the same time. Today both my Civic and Mustang are both sticks.....as the enjoyment has never worn off.
Manual is just some kind of special feel type of way that gets through you while you're riding your car down the sunset and those 3 moves (Press, change, release) are just unique and will never die off in true petrolheads.
@@elaxel1469 - F1 cars used to be a manual transmission, then it changed to a paddle shifters and a hand clutch, then it changed to a sequential gearbox. A sequential gearbox allows you to select gears without the need of a clutch, making faster shift times.
@@dvaneg98 Read what you wrote :) But if you are saying automatic is boring, you obviously never driven in stop start traffic if you think it is entertaining to drive a manual in that kind of traffic.
I have a stick shift Merc (well I'm from Germany most people drive Stick) and I love it. But: from time to time, I just wish to not HAVE TO pick gears every time, after a long day of work I just want to get home and not have to think about it. This is where automatic comes in pretty handy. Same for the food that you put into microwave. Just come home, change into comfy cloths, turn on the TV, put the meal into the microwave, done. We don't even have a microwave or a TV, but I can understand it. My dream cars are the ones from Audi's RS "series", not only do they have a lot of power and look gorgeous, but it's automatic + shift pedals so you can downshift whenever you want ;) Have a nice day ;)
Funny how you mention mercedes, which is pretty much impossible to get in a manual anymore. Same can be said about BMW and Audi as well. Only low to mid range new cars are sold with a manual option even in Germany. Yes, most cars on the road are manuals, however the market is quickly moving towards automatics. And then there's the big electric push in EU...
Dam you have a manual Mercedes? I've never heard of one except one from the 80s, a 2.8 or something. I think that was the ONLY one they sold as a manual.
Lol! Misunderstanding. I'm from the US. I literally didn't know Mercedes made manuals anymore. You can't buy one here. The Mercedes I was talking about above was the 190e 2.3 16v that came in manual. It sold in the US in the 80s. That surprised me because all I'd seen were automatics here in US.
Great video. The cooking analogy is spot on. Frozen dinner=Slushbox, Eating out=DCT, Cooking at home = MT. That FoST is hot too! Love the color and gold wheels combo.
Here in India Automatics are like manuals in U.S., I've never driven a automatic and I don't think I ever sat in automatic, it's that rare. But as things advance we are also seeing more automatics being pushed into Indian market.
That is because of HEAVY traffic. On empty roads or any road other than heavy traffic I cant imagine haw can one have fun with an automatic however advanced it may be.
The number of clutches you will change and the more frequent oil changes and even rebuilds, more than make up for the cost of fixing a good automatic once every 300,000 kilometers at worst and changing the oil many times less frequently.
@@rattlehead999 What is the generalizibility of your claim? Personally, I've never needed to do any rebuilds or change a clutch on my manual cars. My current car is at 350,000 km with the original clutch and no transmission work done to it, and showing no signs of needing any work done to it soon.
Welcome to land where no one knows how to drive manual and needs massive SUV's with 300hp and 20 inches of suspension travel to haul them because they are so obese.
@@thefancyllama4657 it's worse than that. The majority of the time if you ask someone who doesn't need an SUV for transporting kids to soccer or for hauling stuff for work they say they have it because it looks cool or because it is safer in an accident. By safer they mean that they will absolute anihilate the person they hit and they'll be ok because their car was twice the size... Then you have two of these people hit each other and instead of two 3,000 pound cars hitting it's two 5,000 pound cars.. what a stupid mentality.
I distinctly remember pounding through the gears in my Mustang GT while drag racing on the street and looking over at the other driver who was a girl calmly smoking a cigarette.
The spring rate is out of proportion with the damping. The car could have lowering springs and stock struts. High quality adjustable struts would go a long way toward fixing it. Or it could have coilovers with the damping turned all the way down. Or just cheapo Chinese coilovers.
As a Brit, and only having my license for a year now. I've been driving a manual, and have never been in an automatic, yet I have no intention of ever going near one. The control you get from a manual transmission is incredible! If you've never been in a manual, take a few lessons and give it a go. once you can do it its not at all difficult or a hassle, its completely worth it when you get that perfect shift through all the gears.
Weird, but in Europe I rarely see a car with an automatic. One time I had the opportunity to drive an Audi RS3 and I forgot that there was no clutch so I slammed on the brakes almost causing an accident. That was last time I drove an automatic ( I hope).
Europe is bit diffrent. We have mostly manual cars, but those cars have small engines mostly under 2L. And driving a car with big engine and manual is the best experience.
I never understood that. When I get into an automatic and reach for the clutch I just get a foot full of firewall because the clutch would be nowhere near the brake pedal.
firebird188 im of the opinion that if you drive a manual but cant drive an auto without almost crashing or causing an accident you need to go and learn auto in a parking lot before taking on on the road
Real numbers coming up. A quick survey of cars being sold on AutoScout24 in the Netherlands shows a total of 247 391 cars being advertised right now. Of these, 170 780 are listed as manual, 68 200 as automatic, 715 as semi-automatic leaving 7696 with an unspecified transmission type. That means 69.0% of cars are manual, 27.6% are fully automatic, semi-automatics are too rare to include in the percentages and cars with unspecified transmissions are 3.1%. I'll say about 70/30, maybe 65/35 because I can imagine people listing a car which requires driver input on when to shift as manual even when the transmission is fully automated otherwise.
Hey folks! Hope you enjoyed the video! Show Devin some love over at @devin.st1 on Instagram! And of course, let's discuss! What do you guys think? Why do car people still love stick shift?
Gears and Gasoline..your videos show what my heart wants to say❤️
We love stick because it runs in our blood!
Gears and Gasoline how many cool chase scenes in movies use an automatic?
Gears and Gasoline for me stick will always have a special place in my heart because my dad taught me how to drive in a manual Hyundai Elantra. I remember when I first started I hated it but kept at it mostly because he force me but I’m glad he did because now I love it and can’t see myself driving automatic.
“You can’t deny that Ford knows their audience.”
Ford: *discontinues all focus models in 2019*
in the US you should mention.
This. 90% of cars on the road are dumb ass SUV's that look the same as one another.
Scott Noll; They’re not discontinuing ‘ALL’ focus models. They’re discontinuing ‘ALL’ sedans, minus the mustangs, and hatchback focus.
I’d also add that stick shift is so important because on the track it becomes more of a race between people rather than a race between cars
well said
Very true. Another thing - I’m a huge fan of EVs but one thing that frustrates me is all the vids of Teslas beating people at the drag strip. They don’t even have to do anything, there’s no skill. A heavy enough brick could race an automatic or EV. But then the race is about who has more money
Depends on the race though

Downshift from 3rd to 2nd as you make that left turn through the intersection, weight transfers to the front of the car, lightens the rear as you get back on the gas, executing a glorious power-side. Redline 2nd back into 3rd. You and the machine are one.
G V Basically you have full control of your car👍.
For a FWD?
Goosebumps straight fax 🔥
you can do that in automatics tho
After all that being said :
-I would love to try a manual sequential gearbox from a WRC/X car with a manual clutch included for double clutching.

If you have a manual transmission car it always feels like a race car wether it is fast or not
Because it enables us to play with the throttle which results in nasty engine sound while moving, something cannot be achieved by automatic car unless it's in neutral position.
There are some serioualy boring and unengaging manuals, much like there are some surprisingly fun automatics out there.

jrs_ 2000 Honda makes really good transmissions and good-handling cars, a GM economy car is everything a Honda economy car isn’t: Honda cares about their economy cars and making sure they’re not dreadful to drive, GM only cares about cars they can sell with an LS. So yeah, it really is your Civic’s virtue that it’s fun despite being slow, the same applies to Miatas and older BMW’s, they’re slow, but they’re made to be driven, and you can enjoy them because they have decent platforms. Get in a Corsa or a Fiat Palio and you’ll experience a driving experience that a manual gearbox couldn’t save.
jrs_ 2000. that's how you wear out and break things in cars when you drive it around like a race car.

My old manager for instance, let me drive his '69 camaro (loved it) because I have experience.
People don't get why I love driving a stick shift car so much but to me it's much more engaging and fun. Quite honestly I don't see myself giving up driving a manual until I no longer physically am able to.

As long as the internal combustion engine is around the manual transmission should be too. Simple as that.
Boosted FPS bro, I have been in Asia and I didn't see a single manual car there
I really like how every time I shift I can feel the gears doing their thing
In germany it’s kinda mandatory to drive stick - you have to learn it for your drivers license, although you can get an automatic drivers license, nearly no one does that because you can’t drive any stick cars then
Deus MH, Interesting info.... you just gave me something to appreciate about Germany
Also automatic isn't nearly as popular in Europe. That might be changing since automatic is available even on lower priced cars and got more efficient in general these days.
thats about the only good thing about cars in germany
thequilla this Statement means that you don’t take the Autobahn into your consideration- that’s always a great place to drive
only if its later than 10pm. you cant even drive normally on normal days because germans cant drive their shitty little cars faster than 120kmh

You're probably bang on about the oil companies and politicians preventing the industry moving on quicker than it is.
Yea, I love a manual. Wish they were offered in every car, from sedans to light trucks to minivans.
If memory serves me, back in the 80s or early 90s there was a Dodge Minivan that actually had a manual.
Early first gen Porsche Cayenne and BMW X5 (believe it or not) did offer manual transmissions.
The 2017 Honda Accord Sport has a Manual option Believe it or not
Yes, the Accord still does have a Manual which is awesome!

Automatic: so much to do at work today. My boss is such a jerk.
@LuizAbruz. When I am driving manual, I am thinking about driving during my commute. It's a nice distraction from the stresses of every day life.

It gives me more chances to play with the stick and enjoy the fact that my car has one in the first place.
All the people saying it’s not a big deal have never even driven a car lol. When you get stuck in traffic jams for hours and your left and right foot feel like it’s about to go out any minute, manuals suck in that sense.

i watched this video months ago and that's the line that really convinced me to make sure my first car was a manual. no regrets.
I would never even consider buying car that isn't manual.
Agreed, unless I get an electric as a daily. But I'd have to have a second car that would be my toy car (MT)

There’s something unique about upshifting and down shifting through some canyons. It’s just amazing
For cars like that, people just listen to the engine to shift and you get use to it after a while. I knew some trucks that didn't have one either.
ah, makes sense then lol, too bad I've never had a chance to drive that thing longer than 1 minute :/
Can you do all that in a automatic rear in drive
Jacob the First and last knight This. I have a Genesis Coupe and you can put it in sport mode, turn off traction and stability control, and it's easier to spin tires in a CVT because you have more wheel torque than in a fixed manual gear. I think these enthusiasts haven't tried new automatics as much as they act like.
I prefer a manual over anything, even PDK. I could care less if they are more efficient or faster, it is about the experience behind the wheel, for me. That goes for driving on the street or racing, either one! Side note, I'm a girl, so manual transmissions aren't just for the guys 😜!
Carpartment Life great happy to know that there is a girl that cares😀👍

Fouzaan Noble theres something about cruising down the road making light slow shifts, relaxing. Then suddenly downshifting and slamming on the throttle and start flying down the road.

elliot438bcfc that's what the gay guy said
Honestly at this point arguing that Manual Transmission is better than Automatic is like arguing that mechanical watch movements are better than quartz.
At this point, automatics are just better at getting you from A to B, they are dead simple to use, efficient, and boring.
addledhead except the manual is cheaper :)

I found one more reason - because of their simplistic nature they are lighter, and who doesn't like weight reduction
Dariune also cheaper to repair/modify a manual transmission, such as by installing a stronger clutch when your modified engine starts producing more power than the stock clutch can handle...
All you gotta do is loose a bit of weight.
Automatics are cheaper maintenance wise. Until you have to replace your trans that can give out after 200k but with sticks you've probably had to replace your clutch multiple times and repair cost wise almost equals the same because of that. Unless the auto trans just completely craps out.
JappyChan Clutch replacement several times by 200k miles? You're full of shit.
Yah several times depends of how hard you drive your car some people have to replace it after 60k miles...it can last a while if you don't drive so hard...not full of shit...you realize there is a thing called google right? learn how to use it cause you seem like your the one full of shit.

Why is everyone praising the analogy? TV dinners are generally worse than home-cooked meals. Sure some people might cook for fun, even if their food tastes worse than a microwaveable meal, but I'd argue that the vast majority prefers home-cooked meals over frozen ones because the taste is better.

In Europe we don't drive manual because it's 'more rewarding' or 'to control the car'. It's just a lot cheaper!!!
It's cheaper, and even if it was about the same cost, i would still drive a manual.
Yeah...You're lying like a brick

Funny how you mention mercedes, which is pretty much impossible to get in a manual anymore. Same can be said about BMW and Audi as well. Great video explaining why car enthousiasts prefer to stick to manuals!
I distinctly remember pounding through the gears in my Mustang GT while drag racing on the street and looking over at the other driver who was a girl calmly smoking a cigarette.
One of the most beautiful videos related to cars I have seen! Thank you for this experience! The cooking comparison is spot on! Instant Sub!
Im a millenial and a girl, and i love my stick shift car.
You’re doing it right! Salute
Is it just me or does the st's suspension seem too bouncy at 0:55
Thats what happens when you put lowering springs on instead of proper coilovers
The spring rate is out of proportion with the damping. The car could have lowering springs and stock struts. High quality adjustable struts would go a long way toward fixing it. Or it could have coilovers with the damping turned all the way down. Or just cheapo Chinese coilovers.
Vlad Zinchuk I have stance gr coils on my balt which are very nice and they are tuned perfect but are bouncy springs are less bouncy than coils lol
The intro gives me MAD need for speed most wanted vibes.
Edit: this whole channel gives me this vibe
which one?
Weird, but in Europe I rarely see a car with an automatic. One time I had the opportunity to drive an Audi RS3 and I forgot that there was no clutch so I slammed on the brakes almost causing an accident. That was last time I drove an automatic ( I hope).
Man, your comment is stupid.
+Chris No it's not! It's a good comment
Here in Europe it's about a 60/40 ratio.
ApoloFEVE same German is a lot of sticks like my 96 Jetta VR6 MKIII is a manual and my boxster s is a manual and my 86 E30 m3 is a manual too

More like 85/15 ratio
I'm not sure what the ratio is, and I know manuals are dwindling, but here in Straya there are a lot of manuals too.
Very elegantly explained. The pitch, the tone, the pace and the music is just right
