My uncle who passed away a few years ago had severe dementia in his last year or two. He didn't remember who I (or any family member was), but he could still communicate. His childhood memories were still there, and in his final months, he would talk about his adventures as a child visiting the American military base at Strathpine which was in walking distance from his childhood home at Bald Hills
21:41 Went back and had a swing and a stickybeak today and I reckon you're spot on here. Bunch of 9mm casings on the back side of that berm and a few squashed 9mm bullets hard up against the back wall of that cutting, so I daresay that was an Owen Gun range since it's exclusively 9mm casings. If you go up on top of the backstop cutting you'll find yourself on what I assume must've been the old track that led to the little range. You can sort of follow it back up to the old road on top of the ridge. If you look at the aerial photos from '49 to about '58 there's a roughly rectangular clearing that looks suspiciously like a rifle range just down the old road about 200m North of the first range. I think those "foxholes" are well and truly postwar excavations, you can see at least 2 of them had been freshly dug in one of the 70's photos. Why they dug them I have no idea, might've been something to do with whatever was going on near the entryway back in the day.
Did better than I did when I went there, fellas. Found a .22 and an old hammer head and called it quits when it started hammering down rain, haha. Might have to have another look, seems like much better relics than I've had out of Camp Columbia.
Very interesting guys , I grew up in pine rivers and still remember some of the war relics still here in the 60s , we lived on Gympie Rd in Strathpine near Learmonth st , I used to go fishing at the quarry at the creek down there , there was still an old Army Tank an the edge of the quarry we used to play on , we used to go exploring a lot back then , there was the remains of a the camp up the hill on Kremzow Rd , there was heaps of concrete slabs left , mush later a mate bought a house on Gordons Crossing Rd not far from where you guys are in this vlog , he found an old well that was full of old rusty army stuff like ammo tins , helmets , broken tools , all sorts of bits and pieces , they used to have signs all the way up Sampsonvale Rd up to Clear mt warning not to go into the paddocks because of the unexposed bombs still there , people were finding them for years and reporting them to the police which told the army which would come out and detonate them , my sister and her mate were on the Clear mountain lookout once playing CB radios and some trail bike riders found one and thought it a good idea to throw rocks at it , needless to say it went off , didn't kill them but they got hurt .
The Sunshine Coast was also an RAAF range. In the 80s a hole was being dug for a pool at Kawana Waters and a bomb was found at about 8 foot deep. I wonder how many are still there under all the development.
There is also a WW2 range still with the berms and concrete target bunker in Cleveland about 20mins south of Brisbane. So much stuff there you don't even need a detector.
I'm well on my way to filling a 10L bucket with the .303 shells I've got off the old Woodford rifle range, just walk around and pick 'em out of the sand after the rain most of the time 😂 Earliest headstamp is '08, latest is '57, majority are early WWI era C.A.C rounds. Roundnoses, Spitzers, even a few MG boat-tail bullets for the Vickers. Some WWII-era British and American produced .303 as well. Must've been used by both civvys and the Army during and after both wars, I know there was an Aussie camp just to the NW of the range during WWII.
Nice Cam. Good use of the metal detector. You found heaps more cool stuff than me 👍 I wanted to search Clear Mnt but reports of artillery range at Flinders, Clear Mnt has me worried going off-track there. I've no idea were "Flinders" is at Clear Mnt? 😬
There’s a bunch of bomb (mortar) craters off Fischle Road heading up clear mountain. I did a video a while back about the walking trails. I can tell you there is plenty of shrapnel fragments lying around. Not just in the areas that are signposted. Stay safe if you go off trail.
On the 50th anniversary of the end of WWII secret commonwealth papers were released identifying Camp Mountain as an ex military range. Property owners were concerned as they didn’t know about the risk of uxb that might still be there.

I was hoping you'd dig up a tank ☹

Interesting. There are heaps of Mortar Craters on Camp Mountain facing Samsonvale.
