I love this song. The way the narrating character describes her experience in slow motion in unison with the music is very infectious. Great idea.

Some artists are so talented, that they transcend personal taste.
Jane Siberry will be here for a long, long time.

She's so brilliant. No one tries to make interesting, creative, intelligent music like this anymore.

So beautiful... and just devastating. This song in a class by itself. It's so intense that it's often more than I can handle. I had to write to her to say how moved I was by it. A song of genius.

Jane follows her own unique muse, and this video is no exception. Oddly beautiful and haunting, just like her music.

Just stunning. So simple. So true. I remember being a music student in Boston when this came out. I thought, I’ll never do anything as artistically *real* as this. Jane’s combination of artistic vision and technical skill still blows my mind.

What a wonderful track this it - I used to play it over and over when I bought the album.. It hasn't diminished in quality over these past twenty odd years... Oh, and three people have ears that are painted on.

From the moment I first heard this song, way back in 1988 (yes), I was caught off guard by the line, "this is my finest moment," and it set off a meditation that has never ceased. (A 27-year meditation.) Is it possible for someone to be aware of their finest moment in the midst of their finest moment? Or is it something that occurs later (perhaps much later), when they realize that they may have, in fact...peaked? I also began to wonder, what would be my own personal criteria for a "finest moment" and am I living toward that end? Personally, I think I might be disheartened to discover that my finest moment had already transpired, and that everything from here on out will be less than my finest. I prefer to think that my finest moment so far is precisely that - so far - leaving room for something greater still to come.

what about when those fine moments turn into whole fine hours?

    • @KeithRowley
      @KeithRowley 7 років тому +1

Memory is so... ephemeral. It changes, dissipates. I don’t know how useful it is to try to compare the “fineness” of various moments in memory to any present moment. Doesn’t that take one out of the direct experience of the present moment?

This is not her finest moment! She has abandoned him.... What she then "knows" at the end .. .

OK, now I'm REALLY impressed! I had no idea you shot this yourself. And improvised-that's really something. It just works so well with that wonderful song. Now I'm going to have to go watch all of the Jane Siberyy stuff you've posted.

Hey thanks Zubby! And it was all improvised before a show! But I actually think that it turned out so well is that she was secretly controlling my camera moves telepathically. I wouldn't be surprised, her mind and her senses are so powerfull and sensitive! Or we had a great connection and I know the song really well, she chose it coincidentally? Or did she sense it was a very important song for me? I was surprised. Anyway, glad you enjoyed, Tootie Concerto full lenght coming soon! Éric.

Wow! Awesome rane38! This is one of my all time favorite Jane songs. The writing and voice are brilliant. When was this shot? I requested this song last year at a concert and she looked at me like I was crazy...I just thought that maybe she didn't wish to perform older songs anymore.

Maybe I just grew up from the encounter. I’m now not really a fan of anyone, anymore.
Believe me, I've loved this woman more than I can put into words in a musical sense, & I even broke my own rules about trying to talk to any artist after a show to try and communicate with her. There’s not enough room to explain this.
We, as consumers, are nothing more than cattle that are corralled by most artists with any gravitas. con't...

Just curious, I filmed the video before a concert, is the song painfull(because Jane somehow chose it and It was like she had read my mind), or is the simple one shot video painfull to Watch?

@Cicilo1983 you can get something called "Free Studio" which allows you to just paste the url for the video above, and it converts it after downloading the audio, into an mp3 file.
I would have, for 10 years, dragged myself over a field of broken glass to watch this woman. Then I met her. In 30 seconds, I realized that I had had a decade long lapse in reason. It doesn't mean that her music isn't good. It means that I realized suddenly how she really viewed folks who like her music.

GuitarGare I know someone very much like you who was her BIGGEST fan. He was given an opportunity to go up on stage with her at one of her shows. She subsequently completely belittled him and disgraced him. She completely trashed him in front of her entire audience. I think Jane is a true artist. With real artists come very odd personalities and quirks. She seems to be bitter at the people who love her yet if she didn't want people to listen to her music and love her why does she chose to make music. Maybe this is the same reason she changed her name?? I don't know. This is one of my all time favourite albums and I try to remember where I WAS and what I WAS DOING when I first heard it and fell in love with it, rather than what I know her as since that very sad concert in which she chose to destroy someone for loving her. Perhaps it was her darkest hour...??

Weird! Was your friend invited on stage? And was it to sing with her? Did she trash him in a humourous way? She was very nice and giddy at the Montreal Tootie concerto, I was invited for a late dinner and I declined, too overwhelmed by having to say smart things, then the second tume I was asked to film her getting a Canada Arts Council grant, I was late as there was a huge snowstorm outside, she didn't seem in a good mood and no smile... I got to ride a taxi with her, and was too nervous to capture everything, and hadn't had time to use the camera borrowed, so I missed the ride, and she asked if I could film her going inside, but it was getting late, I made a stupid joke...then I was nervous getting our jacquets checked, and trabslating everyone to her, and she stopped me and cancelled me filming the event, either because she was not feeling ready and that her performance should not get captured, or because I was so nervous and not effective... "I hope you don't think this is weird but I'd rather not be filmed..." "well yes I think it's weird but I alsp know about you so..." I was so sad and hated myself for my flakyness. Then I filmed parts of a concert, and when I arrived in the dressing room, she said "Be carefull, I'm in a bad mood, and I turned around in one second, but the show was great, and after she was in a very good mood, enough to film and lipsynch IN MY DREAM, she apologised to not have spent time with a fan I invited from Tampa Florida...... She has her moods and own problems, w hardcore fans just should not meet her too often, unless it is a meet and great.... We all know her sense of humour LIVE and on some songs is carcastic...

1988 was a great year for albums ("Lovesexy" by Prince, "Starfish" by The Church, "Surfer Rosa" by The Pixies, "Spirit of Eden" by Talk Talk, "Green" by R.E.M. …).
But the two albums that I listened to most often (and still do) are "The Walking" by Jane Siberry, and "Walking A Changing Line: The songs of Jules Shear" by Iain Matthews.

However, living in a world of your own creation where people's adoration takes on mass to the point where everything you say becomes an 'inside' to the select few-then the belief in your own press becomes three dimensional & you start to pick and choose who are allowed to like you, then subscription to “your club” is useless, and nothing more than selling the cult of personality. This is also why I'm no longer a recording artist. I guess I'm indebted to her in a way.

Does anyone have any interpretations as to the meaning of this song? It’s just so intriguing, as is the entire The Walking album.

    • @merrillb

She has hurt and abandoned a man in that room, and now she goes down the lobby to try to evade her fault. She tries repeatedly, but the others in the lobby point to her foolishness. So she runs out into the snow, with more evasion. But in the end she faces up to her "darkest hour." This is what she expresses with "I know it..." It's such a powerful and beautiful song! PS The theme of the entire album is relationships that are fractured.

***** Just like you won't learn that trying to wax philosophical is not exactly your strong suit. Nor is logic, considering you respond to a generic comment made four months ago, and intended for no one in particular, yet somehow you take issue with in the form of a very weak attempt to insult me, and all entirely unprovoked. My advice: You need some friends. That is, besides the creatures that creep around in your Mom's basement.
