  • Chrysler expert John Lazenby shows off his immaculate 1955 Chrysler Imperial to Lance Lambert, host of television's "Vintage Vehicle Show". This car is spectacular from the toothy grill to gunsite taillites. Visit www.vintagevehicletv.com for additional information about the show.

10 YEARS IS INCORRECT. The Imperial ran as a separate make for 23 years, 1955-1975, AND 1981-83. Although some sources point out that The Imperial reverted back to a Chrysler model in 1971-72, interestingly, the VIN numbers tell a DIFFERENT story.
Every Chrysler Corporation make had it's own descriptive "Make Code" in it's VIN number. i.e.
    Plymouth ("P") , Dodge ("D") , De Soto , ("S"), Chrysler ("C") , and Imperial ("Y") .
If the Imperial was a "Chrysler", it would have shared the "C" make code with other Chrysler models. (300, New Yorker, Newport, Saratoga, ETC) . BUT IT DID NOT. All models of Imperial(Custom, Crown, Le Baron, Crown Imperial Ghia) had their OWN MAKE CODE ("Y") , distinguishing them from all Chrysler models ...thus , they were not Chryslers.
Although the '71-73 models had the script "Imperial by Chrysler" applied to the car's rear trunk, they continued to retain the separate ("Y") make code in their VIN numbers, thus they were NOT Chryslers even then . By 1974, the "by Chrysler" script had been removed. , and the Chrysler "C" make code was NOT added , so the Imperial ended it's run as a SEPARATE MAKE from Chrysler, no matter what you may have heard or read to the contrary. (It is believed that the "Chrysler" script was re- added in an unsuccessful attempt to increase sales, but by the early '70's , sales of ALL large cars were decreasing , so the "Chrysler" name couldn't save the car .

When I was a kid, my family MD did his house calls, in his all Black Imperial 2dr. He traded it in on a 59 Thunderbird!

This is a very attractive car, looking every bit the top of the range, the best that the manufacturer could do (except that eagle at centre front, ell made but looks cheap and nasty). It's been very well restored and is in excellent condition. Why not show us a lot more of the car, interior and exterior, rather than the 2 men talking beside it?

Just a beautiful car, John. Fantastic job! Do I dare ask about fuel economy?? :D

Less power than C-300 but more luxurious interior.

I love the '55. Give me one of those or a '56 Continental Mk II.

@williamg2552 the 1967Imperial shared the unibody platform with other full-sized Chryslers but retained a unique bodyshell 66 was the last body on frame unique imperial the 69 2 dr looks just like a dodge Polara with different grille and tail, lights and bumpers etc not such a bad thing as the 69's were pretty decent

IMPERIAL of this era (1955-1983) was NOT A CHRYSLER. It was a SEPARATE MAKE and division. Check the vin numbers. Under the "Make" code , Chryslers used "C". IMPERIALS used "Y". TWO SEPARATE MAKES.This car is NOT a "Chrysler". It is an IMPERIAL, PLAIN AND SIMPLE.

These cars are cool, but, for me, kind of dangerous. People loved the Push Button. But no 'park'. Only the parking brake. Imperials had a pedal. Plymouths had a pull up handle, notorious for failing if you accidently bumped it

Who cares about fuel economy while owning and driving this car?

If I were the owner of this Chrysler I would've been tempted to just smack that host upside the face. How many times does he have to "downplay" the guy's car by reminding him that it's NOT a "300?" So what? What a creep!

StvMcQueen1 Technically, it's NOT a Chrysler, precisely... But who cares, it looks so good !

they are really nice, but so is the 1964-66 Imperial. That one was designed by the guy that designed the 1961 Lincoln.. Chrysler stole him from Ford
