It's a cold snowy day here in Utah, I'm on a train headed to take a midterm. This video is literally #1 on my list of things I needed today. Thanks you guys!
The Brutal Cathar double spell was the first time I've seen a play coming and understood it before they explained. Feel like I'm learning so much about Magic from these!
@@DimT670 In his defense Brutal Cathar came out during the pandemic when Canlander play was all but stopped. He probably hasn't played against it more than a couple times, and it likely has never flipped on him.
Would be nice, but honestly, it's a really straight forward list, play good bodies with either taxing effects (thalia, arbiter, phyrexian revoker) or removal (brutal cathar, palace jailer), when the opponent has nothing left, you have a huge board to swing in
Both of them are so good at Magic. Wheeler clamping his Balista to draw 2 cards and then tapping down Serge's land so he can't Balista for 3 and kill the Cathar was such a tight line
Also the Ward -3 life means if Serge ever wanted to kill it with the ballista in night night time he would have to take 9 making the clock even tighter.
Just started the video and i have never noticed the sword in the intro has the lrr symbol, love that little detail. Thank you for shining more light on this amazing format. You're all wonderful! Have a great day :)
I remember when Wheeler got dumpstered by Jere using Palace Jailer to take every threat he had, then win overwhelmingly. The first game made me think he learned a lesson from that experience. Excellent, as always. Thank you. 😊
This is great timing for me, I'm considering a Death and Taxes deck and watching Ben pilot his just reinforces my desire to make a deck around this theme. Serge, always great watching you play as well. Excellent video, thanks guys.
I find it so interesting to see serge talk through his turn. Might have to start doing that as well. But especially interesting when wheeler is holding an answer and just patiently waits for serge t finish his line of thinking
This was the exact video I needed today. It's been a wildly stressful Wednesday and this made it all worth it. Thank you Serge. Thank you Wheeler. Keep 'em coming!
its really cool how this format lets you play pretty fair and almost pre-Horizons-modern-seeming 1v1 Magic, even using some of the most powerful cards ever printed.
I love this series. It might also be cool to see some deckbuilding. Like thoughts on flex spots in like 5 min vids to accompany these. Love wheelers streams where he puts decks together.
In Game 1: Couldn't Serge have equipped Bonesplitter to the Mechanaut and played Etched Champion for 2 due to the discount from Mechanaut? Putting Wheeler to 2 and then Serge had lethal next turn.
Apologies if this has been answered elsewhere, but now that Nelly is part of N100 the podcast, any plans to get him in a showdown episode? I think that would be neat 😀
I believe the plan is to get Nelly on, but they filmed a LOT of Showdown earlier in the year. We're watching episodes that have been filmed for a while now, getting doled out along the way. I suspect the Nelly episodes are in the hopper down the line a little.
Not that it would have changed anything but Eiganjo would have only costed W to activate since you had 2 legendary creatures. Chad was remembered but poor forgotten doggo.
48:40 In that situation, if you block Cathar with Recombiner and they trade, don’t you get your Slith back on time for it to be a valid Modular target ? If so then you can still chump Chad with Ballista, shoot Revoker and offer to go to combat damage, and if your Recombiner gets killed before combat damage you can still Modular onto Ballista to shoot Cathar and Mom. I mean obviously against a 3 counters Vial and a bunch of mana it’s nigh impossible to play around everything. I’m mostly interested in the Cathar trading VS Modular ruling thing.
Actually, there is a recombiner line - block chad with the recombiner, shoot the 2/1 revoker, take 7, go to 3, modular 2 onto the ballista, shoot the transformer, untap + win
17:14 I opened this at this time stamp... must have stopped mid watch some time ago... and it was just four seconds of silence, Wheeler's massive board state, and Serge finally says "This STINKS!" That's it. That's the show.
Probably doesn't matter, but wouldn't Serge still gain the 1 life because while the Cathar transforms, triggers can't go on the stack until Upkeep, which Serge still had three artifacts for the Fair to trigger...nevermind, checked Scryfall and it says that it does still trigger, but if you don't have three when it resolves you don't gain 1.
I remember playing in the Amonkhet prerelease, and TWO separate people opened Gideon of the trials. And I played against both of them. And I lost both games. Funny thing is, when I did the Hour of Devastation prerelease I also opened up Gideon. Still lost a game because my opponent cast overwhelming splendor but other than that Gids won me every game I played him. Very much poetic justice haha
In game 1 Serge payed 3 mana for his etched champion while only supposed to pay 2 because of the flyer, reducing casting cost of artifacts by 1. This would have allowed him to equip bonesplitter to etched champion before the revoker etb'ed. In games this tight this is a big difference 😅 Great games guys!
The Day/Night play pattern isn't problematic, they give the opponent agency on when things happen. Serge just had the perfect combination of weak individual threats plus mana inefficiency that allows the Day/Night cycle to progress out of his control.
The problem is with the cards that care about the time switching from Day/Night and vice versa. Brutal Cathar punishes your opponent for playing things (Exiles a creature) and for not playing things (the controller gets farther ahead). As the controller of the cathar you don’t need to change how you play because you will just continue to get value. Limiting your opponent to one spell a turn is bonus value for DnT since they want to break the one spell a turn symmetry. Overall it’s a creature that “dies to removal” but unchecked will get a ton of value.
@@Ygo1ohcysP Again, you have influence on when it flips. Yes casting multiple spells or casting no spells are things you might want to do but are punished for, but there's plenty of situations where the reverse is true. Again, this matchup was particularly good for the Cathar because Serge was light on removal and was heavy on mana-hungry equipment that made him go multiple turns without casting spells. And this doesn't limit your opponent to one spell a turn. it only punishes casting multiple spells when it's night, not day. And unlike most other cards that generate value if unanswered, Banisher Priest value can all be for nothing once answered.
@@Mordalon I completely agree that this matchup emphasized the power of brutal cathar. Yes, it only “limits” you to one spell a turn if it’s night. Normal werewolf cards that have the weaker human side and the more powerful nonhuman side are fine because day/night becomes symmetrical. For cards that care about the time switching (i.e. brutal cathar, the celestus, and Vadrik, Astral archmage) there is no downside to playing normally. The controller might play differently to get extra value but there is no requirement. Correct there is no long lasting ETB value. But brutal cathar is pretty good at most stages of the game in most matchups. The problem with the day/night mechanic in general (besides how clunky it is) is how punishing turning night back to day can be. That was the main problem in the limited format was how if the non-werewolf player stumbled at all the game was pretty over. You brought up some great points and I think we would agree that Brutal Cathar is not overpowered but is a great card that brings interesting play patterns
Should Serge have fetched cranial plating with the fair in g1? Saga could have grabbed shadowspear and put it directly into play saving him the one mana he was planning to use to cast it. i think he's probably still dead?
Even if Serge had a line with artifacts in the first match to maybe win or survive, Wheeler coulda sacrificed his Ranger Captain of Eos in Serge's upkeep to keep Serge off noncreatures for that turn.
Hi, I'm new here. What's the story with Wheeler saying "I love you" at the end of videos? I've been bingeing North 100 today and it's come up a couple times.
Not trying to complain, and maybe it's just me, but the overhead camera seems less focused or more blurry or something than usual with this one. Love the content though, keep it up!
Serge: "Your Mono-W Control Deck ground out the game and took over in the mid to late game! Weird!" Wheeler: "Bruh....that's literally the WHOLE thing....."
There is not too much text on Questing Beast. I know it's futile, but I'll say it every time. People just think it has a lot of text because it has abilities that are only occasionally relevant, like the damage prevention clause. Nearly every time someone talks about a card that "keeps going", 99% of the time it's because of an ability that rarely comes up. This happens a lot with Charms and Commands, where they have effects you use the majority of the time but also have niche effects that people forget about until they become relevant.
Serge: "This is gonna be a quick one, haha"
Wheeler: "oh yah"
Me, looking at video length: "no it isn't. Sweet."

I am in love with this comment
Good luck
fellow utah resident here, the snow was deeply unexpected!
Good luck mate! :)
Shout out to the 5 other fans of LRR from Utah
I'm glad Serge talks out his options when he's deciding on a play.
It helps me understand all the options even when I'm not familiar with the cards
I find it endlessly hilarious that Wheeler's intro bit is very politely thanking the host for inviting him.
The Brutal Cathar double spell was the first time I've seen a play coming and understood it before they explained. Feel like I'm learning so much about Magic from these!
That’s something i love about watching canlander, i always learn more about interactions.
I mean serge forgot about the text completely

I would really enjoy a full N100 breakdown episode of the death and taxes archetype the same way they did for The Rock and others.

God, I love Canadian Highlander videos so much
This series is one of my favourite Mtg things on here, just awesome.

Thank you for posting this, it's great to have something to watch during lunch.
always a pleasure to see you guys play powerful magic
Wheeler always seems absolutely pleased and not pleased at the same time in all of his intros, and I absolutely am here for it.
I would love to see some sort of control matchup! We've seen a bit of other archetypes, but haven't seen control decks yet
Control is pretty bad in this format. Aggro and combo need opposing answer cards and there's no sideboard. It needs 10 Abrades
I’ve got some control lists planned for upcoming episodes. Didn’t want to come out the gates with tier 1 strats
@@bwheelermtg awesome, can't wait to see it!
Always a great day when we get to see Serge and Wheeler play highlander
This format is so cool. I'm definitly going to build a few decks and force my friends to play.
I love this series. What a great set of games!
37:00 Cathar was Clamped, so Serge could've waited for the flip then pinged it with Skelli to keep that exiling threat off board. Just a thought

D&T just might be my favourite playstyle. Love to see it!
I love seeing D&T in highlander. Wheeler piloted that deck perfectly.
In Game 1: Couldn't Serge have equipped Bonesplitter to the Mechanaut and played Etched Champion for 2 due to the discount from Mechanaut? Putting Wheeler to 2 and then Serge had lethal next turn.
Wheeler would've gone to 4, but otherwise yes.
While I don't play the format myself, it's always enjoyable watching som canlander games with some great people.
I can't believe that Serge and Wheeler proved at the end of this video that the Questing Beast meme is alive and well in 2022.
Great format and fun thanks for the games.
A pleasure as always!
Love the day/night overlay!
Just curious when the north 100 showdown can get their own featured dragon shield sleeve?? I can imagine some really good designs coming from it.

It's amazing how game 1 would have been totally different if Serge had any piece of interaction with Brutal Cathar.
You could say it was…Brutal
Or if he'd remembered that his Enthusiastic Mechanaut made his Etched Champion cost 1 less.

Bens breaking out the tryhard deck with all the bussiness Serge has been serving, can Serge ride Hovermyr to the win?
It’s funny to hear Serge’s surprise that Death and Taxes played like a control deck, because D&T has always been a control deck.
"I'm here for a good time not a long time" needs to be a shirt or a poster or something.
I really wanna get into Canlander. This looks so much fun
My new favorite thing in D&T is to fetch a Sunlit Marsh with a Marsh Flat or Arid Mesa
Been waitong for the d&t video
Brutal Cathar is kinda... brutal
Engagement for the algorithm. Loves the games guys.
