Im Comanche and Shoshone from Oklahoma and our medicine was the snake' we used it for many purposes and eventually for bad medicine aswell' when growing up however we were taught to kill all snakes and now i understand that what people fear they tend to demonize
Mambas are so intelligent, they only use their deadly venom when it’s absolutely necessary. I love how her coffin shaped head is so glossy and yet the rest of her body is a matt grey/black. Brilliant video Jason, it shows that black mambas are not all evil and defensive snakes! She is a beauty and looks a very nice size, not surprised after devouring her tasty food! 100% They definitely don't deserve the reputation they have of chasing people and all the other nonsense people believe. They are actually very shy, peaceful animals that avoid human contact at all costs, once a human has been spotted. They are without a doubt my favorite species. My shock at thinking they were possibly within the 6-8 ft range was abruptly rectified after coming across one on our farm in Phalaborwa which stretched like a long stick across our road/bush trail and was frozen with front 1/3 of its body high off the ground like a fallen limb ... We hastily closed our windows !!

This is spectacular. You take a little of my big fear away from me in this video. The snake has indeed a good temperament. The thing with feeding is that the snake can not defend itself when having the food in its mouth. So it also is kind of trust by it in you that you probably will not harm it.
That's awesome to hear. Glad I could help a bit with your fear. Snakes aren't bad animals at all. They are really very peaceful animals. If I had to really upset the snake during a meal, it could regurgitate that meal in a couple seconds and be ready to defend itself if it had to. But yes, it definitely has a great deal of trust in me. As do I, in it 😊🙏🏻
Thank you 👍🏻 Yeah it worked well. Eventually got damaged over time by water and white ants. Had to discard it. I now have big, plastic boxes stacked. Each one serving as a retreat at which ever height and temperature they prefer. 👍🏻👍🏻🙏🏻

Initially when I offer them to her, I wiggle them around in a pair of long tongs, and the snake bites them as she would in the wild. So venom will be injected as per normal. Then I can just leave the already dead mice laying there and she will think that she killed them. But she will also eat them if I just placed them dead and didn't introduce them to her for a bite.
No they don't. They sometimes aren't bright and might occasionally try eating the same meal item from either end. If this occurs, the bigger snake may end up swallowing the smaller snake. So I need to watch to stop this. But they won't actively fight each other over food.
You know, it's nice to see a black mamba do what it's supposed to be doing. Don't get me wrong. I like the rescue videos, but seeing them behave normally is refreshing. There's an intelligence about them...can't quite put my finger on it.
Totally agreed. It's the calmness and peacefulness of these animals that people don't get to see. Once you see it, you understand them a bit better and some of the fear of them, goes away. 👍🏻💪🏻
Beautiful happy girl there,happy to get all those mice without risking fighting with another predator for a full belly. She was spoilt there ,would not pass up an extra mouse out in the bush I bet. If she had a choice,she'd ask to stay probably. She never smiled which is probably good for them..lol..
They swallow head first, because then they're going with the "grain" of the fur, rather than against it. And legs also fold back easily along the body from this direction and don't get in the way. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Hi Jason. Today I had some time on my hands and watched some few more of your videos and it was a real pleasure. Your channel is very underrated and deserves much more attention and of course subscribers. You do not seem to be such an 'attention seeker' just as some other channels tend to be with all that stupid stuff that comes along with it. For this video: I'm always amazed by the intelligence of Black Mambas. You clearly could see that this Mamba knew exactly that it was you who poked her whenever you did. He (or she) stared directly at you most of the times after each poke and it looked as if he/she was wondering why you do this. But there has been never any signs of feeling threatened neither by your presence nor by your poking. That's really a very laid back Black Mamba. I also watched that video today when you caught that pregnant Green Mamba and I'm wondering how the eggs are doing. I think the baby snakes should hatch soon, right?

Let's hope I get there 👍🏻👌🏻 This particular Black Mamba has been in my care for some time, so it definitely has had the time to get to realize that I am not a threat to it. They are pretty intelligent and get to realize this fairly quickly. The Green Mamba did lay her eggs and they are due to hatch probably in about 5 or 6 weeks time. Hi Jaime. Yes they do. They don't need to drink often, because Reptiles don't sweat, so they don't loose body fluids. Reptiles also don't defecate/urinate much, so they don't loose body fluids much through that either. They probably need a small drink maybe only about once per week. 👍🏻👍🏻
I try as far as possible to release the same day they are caught. It does happen that I'm so busy that they remain with me for a day or two. But the ones that need rehabilitation stay with me until they are better. Sometimes a few months.

She is very beautiful , but I have such a fear of these snakes which is totally irrational as I live in the UK , and am unlikely to come across one anytime soon . I have heard so many stories about them , how they deliberately attack humans instead of shunning them as other snakes do , and how they will chase people . There is also something about that coffin shaped head and black mouth that makes my blood run cold . Maybe I was bitten by one in a past life 🤣❓. I hope by watching your videos I will come to learn about these snakes and be able to distinguish fact from fiction …
Is it possible to breed a calm temperament into these animals? Like selecting calm individuals and mating them with likewise mates and repeat for successive generations. I wonder
They sure do hiss when you have cornered them and they are highly agitated. And they do have a strong smell if they defecate, which they often do if they are harassed enough. It smells like a combination of celery and curry.

This Mamba wasn't very long, just bulky. It was 2.6 meters (8.5 foot)

Hi Ryan, no they generally won't scavenge, but if they happen to come across a very fresh dead prey item, they are opportunistic and will take it.

Beautiful happy girl there,happy to get all those mice without risking fighting with another predator for a full belly.
She was spoilt there ,would not pass up an extra mouse out in the bush I bet.
If she had a choice,she'd ask to stay probably.

That's for sure. 10 mice at R12 each or 2 rats at R20 each. Had no rats so had to do mice 🙈🤦🏻♂️
Jason I'm sure you've been asked this before but while searching I couldn't find the answer Why does she start with the head first? 🤔
They swallow head first, because then they're going with the "grain" of the fur, rather than against it.
And legs also fold back easily along the body from this direction and don't get in the way. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Hi Jason. Today I had some time on my hands and watched some few more of your videos and it was a real pleasure. Your channel is very underrated and deserves much more attention and of course subscribers. You do not seem to be such an 'attention seeker' just as some other channels tend to be with all that stupid stuff that comes along with it.
For this video: I'm always amazed by the intelligence of Black Mambas. You clearly could see that this Mamba knew exactly that it was you who poked her whenever you did. He (or she) stared directly at you most of the times after each poke and it looked as if he/she was wondering why you do this. But there has been never any signs of feeling threatened neither by your presence nor by your poking. That's really a very laid back Black Mamba.
I also watched that video today when you caught that pregnant Green Mamba and I'm wondering how the eggs are doing. I think the baby snakes should hatch soon, right?

This particular Black Mamba has been in my care for some time, so it definitely has had the time to get to realize that I am not a threat to it. They are pretty intelligent and get to realize this fairly quickly.
The Green Mamba did lay her eggs and they are due to hatch probably in about 5 or 6 weeks time.
I'll hopefully get a nice time-lapse video of the event.

Hi Jaime. Yes they do. They don't need to drink often, because Reptiles don't sweat, so they don't loose body fluids. Reptiles also don't defecate/urinate much, so they don't loose body fluids much through that either.
They probably need a small drink maybe only about once per week.

How long will it take her to digest the four rats that she just ate?
3 mice ! . Wow id never of expected that. Ok its a fairly large snake but id presumed they would digest before eating again.

How long do you normally keep them for Jason. Do you keep them rehabilitated if they are injured etc ?
I try as far as possible to release the same day they are caught. It does happen that I'm so busy that they remain with me for a day or two. But the ones that need rehabilitation stay with me until they are better. Sometimes a few months.

They have no problem eating dead food, as long as the food item is fresh.
It is illegal here in South Africa to feed live food items to snakes.

Is it really a good idea to let this Momba become so acclimated to people you you are going to release it?
It's not ideal, but unfortunately it's recovery was long. Where I'll be releasing it, it's extremely unlikely it will ever see another human. 👍🏻

She is very beautiful , but I have such a fear of these snakes which is totally irrational as I live in the UK , and am unlikely to come across one anytime soon . I have heard so many stories about them , how they deliberately attack humans instead of shunning them as other snakes do , and how they will chase people . There is also something about that coffin shaped head and black mouth that makes my blood run cold . Maybe I was bitten by one in a past life 🤣❓. I hope by watching your videos I will come to learn about these snakes and be able to distinguish fact from fiction …

Do Mambas hiss and release a bad smell?
They sure do hiss when you have cornered them and they are highly agitated. And they do have a strong smell if they defecate, which they often do if they are harassed enough. It smells like a combination of celery and curry.
