  • 5_13_2016, 2000 Kawasaki Lakota leak up testing, Intake valve issue? Not sure if I should try to start it, or, if I should just replace the head, a used, eBay head and gasket set, cost around $200, with the moderate leakage, I am not sure that it will start, seems to be leaking a lot, Harvey Spooner, Hoarding Mayhem,

Keep up the work Harvey I'd throw a timing chain in and do a valve job/check possibly a home and set of ring and the there will b no question! Decisions delicious!

+corie Dunning , I'm going to try a new intake valve, will make a decision on that when I lap it and see what the cut looks like... Will also be changing the timing chain... About the rings, will go there later depending on the condition of the motor, I still don't know if this thing moved.... Thanks for the suggestions, watching, and commenting!!!

harvey in order to do the leak down test get the engine in time, check the compression and then you can check the leak down by putting the piston at top dead center, then you can do the test again, to do the leak down the right way both valves have to be closed and the piston at top dead center, that is what you have to do to the right reading

+Josh Kilen , I loosened both valve adjusters so that they were closed, (the adjusters were floppy loose) and I had the piston at top dead center, so, the test was done correctly... I pulled the head off the Lakota and the intake valve has a slight bend, I ordered a new one and timing chain... I'm going to install the new valve, lap it, and see what the cut looks like... From there, I will make some decisions.... Thanks for the good input, watching, and commenting!!!

I think I would check the compression.

+Ed Moore , I ended up pulling off the head, the valve barely touched the piston, but, it appears that the valve did bend slightly... I ordered a replacement valve, put up a video on it today..... Thanks for your thoughts, watching, and commenting!!!!

Forge ahead and get it running and go about it the way you know how. Amusing to see how similar they are in regards to the Honda motor

+Ashley Richards , I decided to pull the head, I ordered a replacement valve, will lap it and see what the cut looks like... The Lakota is like a heavy version of the Honda TRX200SX with a much bigger motor... I looking forward to get this one run again.... Thanks for your thoughts, watching, and commenting!!!

I'd listen to the others. it's seems they all are saying its a bent valve.

+Calvin's Corner72 , Calvin, I pulled the head and ordered a new valve, will lap the new valve and see what the cut looks like, will probably change the timing chain also... I want this to be a solid runner, it is worth some $ to do that... Thanks for your thoughts, watching, and commenting!!!!

I have the same tool. I would pull the head and replace the intake valve. It hit the piston.

+Rob Meek , I did not think much of the leak by tester until I used it, now it is one of my favorite troubleshooting tools, I ordered a new intake valve today, I'm going to lap it and see what the cut looks like and go forward from there... I put up a video on it today.... Thanks for your advice, watching, and commenting!!!

3-4 teeth off and can hear air in intake . I say it kissed a valve and that is y it leaks . any thing out of the green is bad , but if hear that much air from intake it matters not what the gauge says the head should come off . That is a lot of leak . any leak you can hear from a closed valve is bad . I bet the valve is bent and running will lead to a come apart . If the valve is bent the guide will be ruined if not already and if it sticks open or head comes off , the bottom end will not be in good shape after that . If i wanted to fix the engine i say do not start it

+wtbm123 , I followed Ur advice, I pulled the head and noted that the valve is slightly bent, I ordered a new valve, I also need to order a new timing chain, I'm going to lap the new valve and see what the cut looks like and will decide on the valve guide after that..... Thanks for the advice, watching, and commenting!!!

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the valve is bent. I doubt that it will ever run close to right the way it sits it will constantly be backfiring through the carb. If it were me I'd do a chain and new guides I'd be willing to bet that the adjuster is fine but is maxed out from a sloppy chain. If the valve is bent like I think it is you won't be doing it any favors trying to run it and if it breaks off then you get to replace a piston and a head maybe even a rod to. But at the end of the day it's yours to do as you see fit I'd just hate to see you wipe it out.

+Wallie2004 , I ordered a replacement valve today, I'm going to lap it and see what the cut looks like, I think U R right, I need to change the chain also.... I put up a video on it today, it does look like the adjuster is maxed out,,, I appreciate the advice, I am not in engines everyday and any counsel really helps!!! What about using the leak down gauge on an engine that you know to be strong and see what kind of reading you get to compare to the reading you're getting on this engine

+DUH HACK SHACK , Normally the leak back is much less and not thru the carb.... I decided to pull off the head and I ordered a replacement intake valve, I'm going to lap it and see what the cut looks like and will decide how to go forward from there, Thanks for the advice, watching and commenting!!!!

If it was mine and I was going to use it, I would continue the teardown and pop the head off to see what's really up with it. If I was going to sell it, I would put it back together and tell the buyer exactly what I know about it. My experience tells me not to gamble too much time getting a rig going just to find out what else is bad and in need of more of my time/money.

+donnie fiechtner , The Lakota is a keeper, I decided to pull the head, I ordered a replacement valve, also need to order a timing chain.... I want this to be a go to ATV, short changing it will not get it there.... Thanks for your thoughts, watching, and commenting!!!!

The valve is screwed. It will never run right if it even starts. If it starts it will run like a valve is to tight. Sorry to be negative.

moderate to a chinaman, its not good. you shouldnt hear air rushing out the carb. i think the intake valve is bent, you could try and reset the chain first. worse case it still needs to be torn down, nothing but time
