    That poncho seat shelter is very useful for emergency survival when combined with a candle. A lot of ultralight trail runners will carry one of the thin plastic ponchos and a couple of candles in the outside pocket of their waist pack.

    • @user-McGiver
      @user-McGiver Рік тому +3

      a ''trench candle'' will do better... is just cardboard wrapped inside a tin can, filled with wax... it doesn't melt away, it lasts longer, and heats better...

    • @LoreTunderin
      @LoreTunderin Рік тому +5

      @@user-McGiverNo it wouldn't. I've made those many times in various sizes, but even the smallest cat food can ones would be way too big compared to what they carry, and way too smokey to boot. The point of the candles are they're small and can be burned inside the poncho without melting it. It isn't meant to start a larger fire, just heat the area immediately around your body to keep you alive until help arrives. There isn't always fuel to burn where these people are trail running (not many trees in a slot canyon / desert / etc.), and the amount of space they have to carry things is extremely limited. Imagine a tight fitting waist pack similar to a money belt, it can't bounce as they stride so it has to be light and close to the body. Typically can only hold 2 or 3 decks of playing cards total, just enough for a car key, a GPS emergency beacon, a 12oz water bottle, a disposable poncho, a small candle, a mini BIC lighter, a couple of energy gels, and a few Band-Aids.
      Besides, if you're willing to make a trench candle, you're better off leaving out the cardboard in favor of more wax, and instead using a bit of lantern wick to make it burn longer and cleaner.

      @@LoreTunderin you're right!... I didn't count the smoking part... just the extra heat...

    For those who may not know, the knot Jason used to connect the 2 ends of the 550-cord is called a square knot and the poncho shelter configuration is called a plow point.

      Knowing what grows in your area that you can eat. Also if you find grape vines, cut the thick ones for fresh water, and you won't have to boil. And since we just rode out Idalia and we live in the swamp, I'll never be without a sharp machete. The locals get fiesty ya know 🐍 Also, my son and I years ago got one of those big projector TVs off a curb and took the glass lenses out. Great fire starters!

    Always enjoy the content. Simple knots and stakes work. The M81 military poncho is longer and wider than the military style ponchos being sold today. If using a mil style poncho I would mate two together by sewing matching Velcro on each poncho to form a small tarp for rain or snow rather than just relying on its snaps. Switching your head around to the smaller end of the poncho shelter or tarp shelter and getting into a 55 gallon drum liner bag works for windy conditions and will protect both upper and lower half of your body. A Small Dakota fire or wood stove just under the front of the poncho works as well. Wearing a wicking first layer and bringing a dry fleece shirt or jacket to change into works when it gets cool. I typically wear a poly cotton military BDU top with DIY hood for cooler weather and light drizzle and dry it later by a fire. I get way to hot and sweaty in a rain jacket. I do bring my gortex jacket and rain pants for expected nasty weather. Otherwise my poncho will take care of a temporary downpour. I do treat the BDU shirt and hood with silicone spray.

    I learned a different way to hank chord. What you do is wrap the chord in a figure 8 pattern around your pinky and thumb. You can find the beginning end and pull it until you find the loop on the opposite side and feed the free running end through it after you ran the wraps around the hank and pull the beginning end until the loop captures the finishing end. Then, if you need to pull a little out, just pull the finishing end out and then pull the beginning end. It won't tangle. You can put out as much as you want, retighten the wraps and resecure the finishing end. This works particularly well for finer chordage that you might want to cut and use a little but not all of it. It's also nice that you can pull it all out without tangling, twisting or knotting.

    Great content. I have a bad neck and need a pillow. I have a few portable inflateable pillows that fold up and weigh next to nothing and take up as much room as a bandana. Theyre great and rugged. Never had one pop. Ive also in a pinch used a gallon zip lock freezer bag and closed it about 90% and then blew it up like a balloon. Then i taped the zipper and wrapped it up in my bandana to keep it safe fom the ground it worked surprisingly well. surprisingly well

    Closed Cell Foam Mats. Notwithstanding the comfort and compactness of the modern Inflatable Mats, Closed Cell is still my first choice.

    I love that you explain this information in such a way that even children can grasp it. I say that because I had instructors that taught me a lot of this, when I was 9 and upward. Some, taught as you do and that remained, others not so much. When I was 15 I was brought on to Scout summer camps as SAR and outdoor camping survival. Mainly I think to show if I could do it so could they. That was over 50 years ago. Thanks for putting out this style of video!

    Yep!... I know!... we all count on our houses, our cars... our weapons... our buddies... but when it comes it comes just for you and finds you unprepared, with all your ''preps'' out of reach, and maybe even dangerous to come close... then all you have is what's on you, what you've stashed away, and what you can scavage... there's no time or way to hunt or fish... all your gear is home, and you don't even need the exposure those activities will bring... but you can trap, both on land and water... and you can get lucky finding ''precious trash'' to help you get by, until you find the way to get home when is safe to do that... ''Survival'' is nothing ''social'', but ''private'' and different for anybody...
    I really like your Down to Earth approach J.S... It's so... ''Natural''
