  • Following on from her false start in 2009, 46100 'Royal Scot' finally returned to steam earlier this summer, after a major overhaul at the LNWR Crewe Works. On Monday 7th September, she was transported to the Severn Valley Railway, where she would under go testing, both light and loaded, prior to her official debut at the SVR's autumn steam gala from the 17th to the 20th of this month. Eager to capture her in action, I made the trip up to the SVR on the 9th and 10th to see her light tests (her loaded tests not taking place until next week), which consisted of two round trips along the line in between SVR service trains. On the Wednesday she only ran as far as Bewdley and back on the first test, and due to a minor failure, her second test was cancelled. Thursday proved to be a better day for her, completing both round trips, albeit with a noisy squeak, caused by some loose gland packing.
Starting off with her backwards run to Kidderminster, we first see the Scot at Highley, making a brief stop to carry out a few checks, then carrying on her merry way, note that she is carrying the brand new Icons of Steam headboard. She is later seen at Northwood Lane, on the approach to Northwood Halt. Now running back to Bridgnorth, 46100 is first seen heading out of Bewdley, then again at the same spot on Northwood Lane we saw her at earlier. Arley is the next port of call, where we see SVR resident 43106 rolling in light engine and parking herself in the platform to await Royal Scot's passage. After a short wait, the Scot is seen squeaking her way through, looking rather lovely is the late summer sunshine. Our next shot sees 46100 rounding the curve at Sterns, then, finally, we see her emerging out of the cutting at Eardington, with the sun reflecting off her marvellously shiny paintwork. She is a credit to all involved in her return to steam, and I look forward to seeing her in action again during the steam gala.
Filmed on a Panasonic HS900 with a Pro Sound L92AA microphone.
    Enjoy.

An absolutely excellent collective piece of footage, which are connoted from top notch filming locations upon the Severn Valley Railway. Hopefully number 46100 will earn and fulfill the enthusiasts next weekend, for the SVR's annual Autumn Steam Gala, which the steam locomotive line-up is deeming to succeeded.
    Kind regards,

Fantastic. Doesn't it look great! Better than when it ran on the WSR in red a few years ago. Thanks for sharing, can't wait for Gala on the weekend. Geraint

For anyone who doesnt know 46100 changed identities with 46152 "Kings Dragoon Guardsman" for its tour of U.S.A. and Canada in 1933 as 46100 was not ready in time for the tour. However 46152 had just been overhauled so identities were changed. The change back never took place so what you see is in fact 46152 ! Or rather whats left of her after her many overhauls !

God bless Sir Billy Butlin , saviour of many of staniers masterpieces . If he hadn`t got many of these L .M.S. express locomotives " stuffed and mounted " in his holiday camps in the `70`s before the preservation movement got going in the mid-eighties , the variety of heritage express locomotives for future generation to savour would be that much poorer.

I understand the title of this video does state 'test' but why in all of it was she on her own? Surly if she's being tested they need to try her out pulling rolling stock?
Even if it's just a couple coaches

+Richard Harris When putting an engine into service you want to make sure she can operate light engine before putting her through the stress of heavy haulage. This also reduces the amount of time wasted arranging a train if the locomotive has a failure.

She certainly looks great but one has to be careful with that "marvellously shiny paintwork" as I inadvertently did a reflected 'selfie' in the tender. Alan
