recently picked up the eureka disc of the great silence which is a fantastic disc and a masterpiece of a film! also picked up the criterion of yi yi, and the curzon discs of wings of desire and alice in the cities, which i can’t wait to watch!
I Start Counting on BFI was a recent weird one, for fans of those kinds of weird late 60s/early 70s films thick with atmosphere that they just don't make anymore.
decided to watch the talk of the town based on your recommedations and I can see why you regarded it so highly so thanks for that =-) keep up the great work
Did not know there was a blu of Nine Queens (and I would certainly never have heard about it from Sony Classics' own website), but now I need it. What a great film that was.
Excellent video as usual Elliott. Whilst I agree with you that physical media is thriving, the downside being is that some releases are getting considerably more expensive. For example, I would love to get the first 3 4Ks you mention, but they are currently all over USD$30 on Amazon. I really fear that some of these high prices will deter new collectors and possibly turn current collectors away.
I agree. The prices are rising and I wish they could be kept low. The silver lining is that perhaps it's making collectors be more selective with how they collect. That's something I've trying to improve myself at least! Cheers
Nah they won’t deter anyone except the average movie lover. Listen, collecting is inevitably becoming a niche hobby now. Gone are the days where your average fellow buys a DVD out of convenience. Collectors will not turn away from expensive releases because they are as you say, collectors. And playing the price game is a part of collecting.
You made my day with this "The Blood Ship" movie. I try to watch lots of silent films and enjoy that genre and had NO idea this existed. I just watched "Night Passage" with James Stewart and have to recommend that in spite of some weak writing and characterization because it's one of the truly prettiest Westerns I've seen, with great Autumn Colorado colors and a really strong gunfight near a mine.
Great additions there Elliot 😀🍿🎸🎶 I never heard of ‘Bushman’ & ‘Variety’; sounds very interesting; will add them to the watchlist 👍 I heard awesome things about ‘Transformers One’; it was suppose to be one of the big surprises of last year 🤩 I am hoping to check out either ‘High & Low’ or ‘Stray Dog’ from Akira Kurosawa today 😀👍
Hey Elliot, recent pick ups include Incubus from Arrow and Violent Streets and Revenge from Euerka and Inglorious Bastards and the Cell. I need to stock up on a few Raidiance titles from last year and the Severn boxset Cushing Curiosities is possibly my next purchase! Thanks for keeping us updated with your watchlist
I just had Dr Terrors House of Horrors, The Keep, and Congo shipped from the US. It’s costing me an arm and a leg already this year. I can’t wait for Scanners 4K, one of my favourite films
The Talk Of The Town was one of the most pleasingly unexpected 4k announcements of last year. Not necessarily surprising that it got a release but more that it got a studio release rather a Criterion one as we see so few golden-age classics get studio 4k releases if they aren't those handful of iconic titles that everyone's heard of. I get why, because they won't sell enough, & The Talk Of The Town 4k hasn't seemed to get the attention it deserves either, but what's annoying is that people would've flocked to buy the film had Criterion put it out. Sadly it's why we get these sort of releases very rarely from studios. I picked it up at Christmas, it looks very nice, though I've seen some think the restoration was very meh. We are way too spoilt these days, if the restoration isn't perfection in every way then some people lose minds about it. I watched the Once Upon A Time In The West 4k a few weeks back for the first time & thought that looked beautiful too yet I remember people whinging about that one also. 🤷♂️
Love your videos Elliot, I’ve been meaning to finally pick up the Wim Wenders set from Curzon along with their recent release of the Bela Tarr set, just wondering how often does Curzon go on sale? When do you reckon they’ll go on sale next, haven’t kept as much track of them as some of the other labels, thanks and keep making physical media proud!!
Curious your policy on logging films on LB. Always check out the movies you recommend and frequently don’t see a diary entry from you. Love the channel!
Great to see SONY are releasing Vintage films even Silent films.... good to see golden vintage films getting attention. The transformers one let down was the ATMOS , very weak and leaves more to be desired. Probably ran out money to do it properly.
There's talk of an audio issue on the Little Women 4K: Apparently the 5.1 audio only comes out of the back speakers. Did you experience this? I've been holding out on buying it because of those talks.
Long time fan of your channel! So I'm wondering, you get monthly new discs, is your space ever going to run out? I'm curious where you keep it all. Your shelves in the back seem kinda full. For me the biggest issue with physicial media is the space. Maybe you can do a tour of your collection.
Thank you! Yes I'm always managing the space, which is very limited given I don't have a big house! I regularly sell or give away films that I don't think I'm going to watch again any time soon. I'll make some videos on the topic of space saving! Cheers
I'm in America, and am interested in getting some titles from Eureka. Do you know if their blu's play on region A players? I have a panasonic ub820 and some region B's work on it.
I wanted to pick up LITTLE WOMEN 4K UHD, but didn’t because I heard Little Women" 4K UHD release has a significant sound issue where the front left and right channels are completely silent on the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track. Has this been fixed by Sony or disc replacement ????
I'm going to check my disc again as I think I only listened to the 2.0 when I watched recently. If that is the case, I'm sure they should issue a replacement as that's a signifcant error.
That's actually a misunderstanding. They announced they'd stop production of empty rewritable Blu-rays for personal use. Verbatim is the most popular brand in that market anyway. Sony owns the Blu-ray format, and will still release movies on Blu-ray and 4K UHD. In fact they recently made a deal with Disney to take over their physical media releases. Sony isn't going anywhere.
@@marchughes6161 I found the site you were referring to, and while the link had a very definitive headline, it's very misleading. The article states recordable media such as "Blu-ray disc media, recording mini discs, recording MD data, mini DV cassettes" will seize production. I highly recommend never going by headline alone. A lot of misinformation gets spread because of that. Have a great day.
What 4Ks and blu-rays have YOU been enjoying lately? I need recommendations!

For me 'The Searchers' was the best release of 2024. The 4K has brought the VistaVision that it was originally shot in to life.

Didn't know Secret Ballot was recently released on blu-ray. I immediately purchased it, thank you for that.
Brilliant was gonna order the cary grant movie from overseas, now I don't need to. Thank goodness for your channel. Keep up the great work😊
Nine Queens Is awesome! Very happy that you can recommend this to people, so that they can discover how great it is!
Did not know there was a blu of Nine Queens (and I would certainly never have heard about it from Sony Classics' own website), but now I need it. What a great film that was.
Did not know Nine Queens was out on Blu Ray! I had to watch it on the Criterion Channel in 480p… great film though! Really love Ricardo Darín

Picked up North by Northwest on 4K. First time watching it and loved it! Plus it looks awesome.
Great film and I loved the 4K!
Oooh! Nine Queens!
It’s great!
Saw The Talk of the Town at Bradford Pictureville a couple of weeks ago, looked great on the cinema screen.
I'd love to see it on a big screen!
Been there again today to see Bridge on the River Kwai, first time ever seeing this on the big screen, was fantastic!

Deaf Crocodile just announced new releases.
I recently bought and watched Basic Instinct 4k and Stay Hungry blu ray
I still haven't seen the Basic Instinct 4K! I need to pick that up at some point. Cheers!

I got it cheap on Temu!
NIMH is good. However, it did seem a lot more grim back in the 80s.
Unfortunately, there will be no Blu-ray release of Challengers here in Germany. Nor of Anora or Clint's last film Juror 2. A sad development.
Really sorry to hear that! We have blu-rays of Juror 2 and Challengers in the UK, so perhaps it's possible for you import those? Not ideal, I know!
