I use both coolers. My YETI lives on my fishing kayak while my RTIC goes afield with me. After a couple of season's use, some comments...
The RTIC capacity is larger than the YETI. For apples to apples comparison it’s therefore necessary to account for that difference; especially so during the Ice-2-Water test. Volume would necessarily come into play as a single bag of ice is chilling a larger volume of air in the RTIC than in the YETI and is, therefore, expending more energy doing so. Given that your test had a 3/4 cup difference in melt after 24 hrs, I wonder what that comparative melt volume would be should an apple to apple comparison be run?
What I've experienced: For soft-sides, RTIC seems to have a slight edge maintaining ice. For hard-sides? YETI holds ice longer. Just does.
Also, a taller individual, I find that OTS my RTIC is more comfortable carrying loads than my YETI. However, I’ve since retrofit my YETI with an aftermarket padded hip-belt system and it’s now very comfortable as well - although still a bit on the “high-side” when carrying. Begs the question: For nearly twice the price, why do I need to buy an aftermarket strap system to bring my YETI up to my RTIC? They were designed to be packable, weren't they?
One place the soft-side YETIs are superior (far superior, imo) to the RTIC is... zipper system. Bigger, beefier, unquestionable quality and ready to go the distance.
Also, preference to YETI on their exterior fabrics. After a couple of seasons my RTIC's exterior shine as faded as the gloss layer is flaking and continues to wear off. Whereas my YETI? Ya, it still looks pretty good. I've not found this affects usage in any way, but... well, looks can be important, right?
Again, just a couple of comments from someone who owns and uses both.
Thomas, thank you for your comments! I think you are spot on. I agree that the ice melt might be different based on the volume. I appreciate the input regarding ice melt. Also, I think the zipper difference is significant. Regarding fit and comfort I wonder if my shorter stature had something to do with the comfort of the YETI over the RTIC. Regarding your comment on "packable" strap system, how far are you packing? Also, great input on the surface material. That might be an element driving the price. Thank you for sharing your input. Greatly appreciated! I think both coolers are awesome! But I can only wear one at at time:-)
Awesome points! I think a very important thing is that Yeti offers a 3 year warranty as opposed to one year from Rtic. I belong to online Yeti groups and folks have issues with their zippers. I think its worth the extra bucks just to triple your warranty.
I had the rtic 40 soft cooler. You are right the rtic soft coolers have an edge on ice and cold retention. That type of liner rtic uses and used on other brands like tourit is far better at attracting cold and keeping cold. I believe yetis older models use to use it. The new liner yeti uses is just has a cool temperature when ice is in it and is not cold all over lining. Only where the ice touches. Although yetis lining is more premium and more durable.
What happened to my rtic? The edges started to peel under a year. The adhesive failed. Rtics customer service is horrible almost non existent . When I was able to get in contact with them I always got a run around. I gave up and went all in with yeti (2 m30s and backflip24). Couldn't be happier. Its just in another level of quality and service. The only thing that comes close in quality to yeti in my experience is the Otterbox trooper LT30 which I own also .

Was never a big “cooler” guy past a basic Wally World special until a buddy of mine recommended a yeti. I tend to beat other outdoor “gear” hard so I figured why not. Just took my brand new M30 to the beaches of Florida. Packed 20lb of ice and drinks with two ice packs in the bottom. Day 4 we had to crush the ice as it had frozen over the drinks and we couldn’t even get a beverage 😂. Day 6 I added half a 10lb bag of ice and there was probably 10lb of ice in it already with some slush(left the ice packs alone in the bottom because). I’m not a fanboy nor partial to a brand but, I can say yeti works. It was 96 degrees FL sun on the beach everyday. Cooler sat in the shade maybe 50% of the time under an umbrella and other in the beat of the sun on the top of the hot sand(if you’ve been to FL, you know). This cooler performed how I expected. Yeti isn’t a 1 day picnic cooler and you pay for what you get.

Interesting. I’ve experienced with the tumblers RTIC holds I’ve longer .. but I guess for the coolers yeti may win lol

Here is my honest take on the two since I’ve owned both. The rtic lids fail after about a year, and rtic doesn’t cover their products under warranty, versus YETI will send you a free replacement. I will never buy a RTIC product again solely based on their lack of customer service/warranty.

RTIC has a 1yr warranty. Not sure if they had it when you posted but I just got this cooler today and the warranty is stated on the receipt
You’re also gonna spend 1/4 of the price so eh 🤷🏻♀️ I have both brand products but for the price I prefer the RTIC 😂 I haven’t had any bad experiences yet
I love my RTIC. It was gifted to me but I’m trying to figure out how to get through 3 days of camping with it lol ❤❤❤❤😂❤❤❤
I'm not sure about the RTIC. However, the YETI is the right size to carry onto an airplane.
EXCELLENT review kind sir! Too bad Yeti discontinued that hopper backpack with the zipper. Been looking hard for one. Bought a XYLOTO one that looks just like it in the mean time.
I think they had some issues with the zippers so they moved away from that design but I still really like the zipper idea.
Yeti has now replaced this cooler by offering the M20 backpack style but its with an improved magnet that stays open unlike the first gen of the magnets where it was hard to load and clean. However, the price was raised to 325. No more zippers going forward on the backpacks it seems.

would have helped better to visualize the straps if you would wear a light tshirt in demo...and involve a taller person for size comparison....just a thought

Thanks, Brandon. Good tip. Both YETI and RTIC recommend pre chilling the cooler. I agree.
I would also recommend an ice pack after the pre chill. Place at the bottom then drinks, etc top with ice. That ice will makes it way down and "re freeze" with the Yeti, Rtic, or my favorite, Artic Ice Brew Series. Just my two cents.
like who the tf thinks it's okay to charge 300$ for some fabric and foam, it's BS, the markup on Yeti is insane.
Filling these with heavy liquids and packing it around? You will feel like you are competing in a worlds strongest man competition. Remember the guy who blew out his knee trying to run the timed forty yard with a refrigerator on his back? Best way to haul a cooler is in the back of a pickup truck. I don’t want to carry a half case cooler full of beer more than 10 feet. I have a much smaller one that I paid $40 for. I could barely carry it from my car to my hotel room when it was half full on drinks and ice. Have not used it at all. Stupid contraptions.
I use the cooler every time I go fishing or head out on the boat. I can fit a few drinks, an ice pack and my small tackle box in the cooler. And then I just throw it on my back. I'm not a big fan of "filling" these. Just alot of weight. But, I have filled it a few times when we had big groups and I was thankful for the backpack feature. Thanks for the input!

Did no one notice he took out two cups on the first scoop on the yeti, but d said one cup. I counted 8 cups for the yeti.

Which one is made in the U.S.?
Both companies are headquartered in the USA and some of their products are made in the USA, but I believe most of their products are made overseas. Yeti has a 3 year warranty compared to 1 year for RTIC.
Bison, I believe is the only cooler company that makes BOTH hard and soft coolers in the USA.
What about the scuff resistance on the bottoms of the packs?
Both have scuff resistance on the bottom of the pack and so far it is holding up nicely on both packs.

Weigh each bag of ice before and after. Make life super easy. You could immediately test the water proofness by just adding water inside each cooler instead of waiting 24 hours. My point? Make the review simple and quick for the viewers 🙂

The weight of the coolers would still be the same whether the coolers held water in its solid form or liquid form.
If you cant measure the water by eye, then the more expensive one isnt worth it.
