HEY! :) you can do both haha my family hosted two exchange students one on the 13/14 period and the other 14/15 period, now is my turn to be an exchange student for this 17/18 period that's coming up next August, but I'm going with rotary
I think it's so amazing that your family has hosted five times! This year is our second time hosting with YFU. My mom was an exchange student with YFU in the 80's and my grandparents also hosted with YFU in the late 70's early 80's and I think it's a great program and I just think thas amazing how your family has touched 5 different students!
I agree it's an amazing experience that not a lot of people get to have. I think it's really underrated, people think of it as just a favor for the students but it really is just an insightful and fun experience for the whole family. One of our students from Germany is visiting for two weeks right now actually, she just got here yesterday.
That's so great! We hosted a German exchange student last year and she's going to come visit after this school year in the summer. Right now we're hosting a girl from Estonia.
So far so good. Since my family doesn't really have much extra space in our house I've been sharing my room with our exchange student and she's adjusted well to that I think. I mean of course there are disagreements here and there but I'm sure you know what thats like. How about you?
I've never been on the students side, but meeting the student is something I really look forward to every single year. We have hosted five times and it is so much fun!
this made me cry tbh... I spend my exchange year near GR, MI last year. today, my family is getting a new one and I don't think I can handle this.. it's just making me sad and jealous
This is absolutely fantastic and makes me so excited for the future! My mother and I were approved yesterday to home our FIRST exchange student! She is from Kyrgikstan and I am soooo excited to finally meet her and bring her into our home! We are in a small town in northern Michigan, and I can't wait to bring her into our small, loving community. Thank you for posting this!
It is awesome there are still families out there like yours who made these exchange students feel wanted and loved...they right away experience a sense of belonging.... Of care and love....it is obvious all of you enjoy it ..from grandparents to kid brothers....be blessed.
This video has been such a relief for me specially after seeing with which organizations she came from. I hope my host family will receive me like that
Carter Surach omg didn't see that you replied to me until now!! I'm going on exchange to Billings, Montana. My departure is literally just 14 days away!! I still get emotional watching you welcoming Mila, I'm so excited to meet my family!
My family once hosted an exchange student from Spain, a girl named Irene. I was too young to really comprehend why she was even staying at my house, but I do remember that it was a nice experience. Maybe in the future my family will host again! :)
I'm gonna be an exchange student in America in 2017/2018. I don't have a family yet but i hope i get one as nice as yours. Its really cool to see what its like from the families perspective
We have always enjoyed the experience and I hope that you enjoy yours! No matter where you go just soak in the culture and enjoy whatever you can. The United States varies so much depending on where you are when you come here. Going from state to state can sometimes feel like your travelling through different countries. Like I said enjoy your experience on exchange because it will likely be very unique! If you don't already have an exchange program that you're going through check out YFU, they have always been great for my family.
hey) you made me cry😢 .. I'm also an exchange student and my placement organization also YFU. but I dont have a family yet. so you did a great job!!! 👍👍👍
I’m picking up my exchange student in 9 days!!! I’m so freaking excited!! This will be my first time hosting and I just want these 9 days to go by fast. Her name is Jasmin and she is from Germany. We have been talking for about 3 months now and the day is almost here!! I can’t wait any longer 😫😫
alaina ashley yes my mom works for YFU so we stick with YFU and have loved it since we started hosting. Do you have any recommendations as to what countries you've had good experiences with etc.?
Carter Surach oh that's really cool! My mom works with northwestern services so we switched to them ever since. But I think my favorite countries we've hosted exchange students from were Germany and Spain. The majority of our students have been from Germany. What countries have your students been from?

Milla is in a lot of my videos, she is participating in the cheer team and she will be in my video that I post tomorrow. If you have any questions for her I can ask her in future videos so you can see what she says!
I really want to be an exchange student but a) my parents don't want to pay for it/ think I'll get hurt and b) I'm not good at speaking + being social and sometimes I get anxiety from it 😭
All of those things you mentioned are issues you might face on exchange but none of those things can completely stop you. You can learn to manage anxiety, speaking English gets easy fast when you are constantly surrounded by it, and you most likely won't get hurt! I hope you can convince your parents to let you go on exchange it's a wonderful experience. Show them this video and show how awesome it can be! :)
No I haven't, but my cousin is now dating a past exchange student that we had. They have a long distance relationship but she is home visiting right now! :) It sounds strange but it's cool with all of us and they love each other very much!
Oriana Garage no you don't get paid but if you want to you can make them buy their own food and stuff like that, you just have to give them a place to sleep basically. We wouldn't ever do that though, when we have had our exchange students their automatically part of our family.
It's always hard to say goodbye! That never gets easier but we do keep in touch using whatsapp which is an app for international texting, and skype of course. It's worth the experience though! If you plan to host or go on exchange I recommend YFU!
I can see how it would be confusing! After talking for months over skype and getting to know each other; I suppose the only natural thing to do is give a hug! Definitely a lot of fun though! Check out yfu.org/ to learn more!
