How do you access the crane when you go there alone. Do you have to make sure you have a remote control with you. There is no to dock or anything right. In case the crane doesn't work, you have to go back and take the helicopter?
The answer is actually very simple. The boat comes within 3 feet or so of the NE corner leg with what's left of the rusted handrails. I jump off from the boat to the leg and try not to miss. Climb up 65' and open the access gate. Make my way into the belly, up the central stairs, open the main doors (for airflow) and fire up the Honda 7k generator to lower the hoist cable and start snagging people and large lift bags up from the boat 70' or so below. Easy... ;) or I take a helicopter if the waves are known to be over 4' because jumping from a boat in 4+ foot waves, now that would be crazy! Richard
@@FPTower I love that you answer everyone's questions including mine. Thank you so much. Kind of like when a captain needs to jump on a cruise ship or a cargo ship to dock it in their marina. They drive up to it and the captain jumps off and hangs on for dear life. Thank you sir, appreciate your answers to my questions.
I’ll volunteer to ride out the storm with you brother. I was a young Marine when hurricane Hugo came through South Carolina. I was outside in the middle of it all night! I’ll bring some great Black Rifle coffee with me.
We're likely going to do a hurricane trip this year... volunteering to help keep the old gal dry and in order before, during and afterwards clean up. FPTower.org to participate! Richard
Hey there my friend, Thank you for sharing your videos. I think it's pretty awesome what you are doing. I had no idea you could stay there, or come visit. Some day, I'm gonna just go, hit the road and sea and travel for a couple years... Find a home on wheels... see the world. Maybe I can pay a visit, help fix things up, paint a mural or something for you and the tower. Much love my dude. 💚💚💚🦋🦄✨
same back, and not "Just a Mama", because mom's are awesome! We're doing out best with so many volunteers from all over and hope you too can come be part of the tower crew! Richard
I wanna go here so bad I love the idea of thrill and being surrounded by creatures im terrified (yes this may sound sarcarstic but it’s not I’m just a major adrenaline junkey and I love to be scared sometimes) and this place had a mix of bothe peaceful and chaotic I love it
I do my best to enjoy the beauty, prevent the accidents and fix the tower along with a bunch of folks. And yes, sometimes it gets me excited like when the sun pops over the horizon, sheer beauty.
@@FPTower man I can tell you put a ton of love into that tower, the fact that you were able to buy it and turn it into a hotel is absolutely amazing. On my bucket list for sure.
It would be very interesting to see the effects of wind loads on the structure….Wonder if you can feel the structure swaying a little in a good 70kt wind?
It depends on if the wind is constant or gusting and what direction it is coming from. Generally, there is very little movement even in 100+mph winds because they are fairly constant, while we can have a little sway in highly gusting winds of as little as 30mph.
I’m curious about so many things. Definitely going to visit someday. Does a boat remove the trash? And how about the bathroom plumbing? The pipes need to go somewhere, but where? Very interesting this place, and I bet, fun.,
What size hurricane have you been there for? I mean I realize that Atlantic have had Sandy and even others and it is still standing. God bless you . By the way I have the exact same reaction to my coffee in the morning.
I've been told several things over the years (original engineers seem to all be gone now :( ) but they are at least 30-60' deep and filled with cement!
@@FPTower And, it's not as if they could divert the ocean while they worked on the foundation! (I was able to tour McKays Point dam in California while it was being built out of giant concrete Lego blocks. They actually moved the dang river for the occasion!)
The legs at the water level are 42” in diameter thick. Does that mean that the legs are solid 42” thick or the legs are 42” in diameter thick but hollow ?
They are 1" thick top to bottom, then jacketed with 2 additional steel layers of 1" and a 2" thick over the base steel for a total of 4" thick steel! They then rammed pipes through the middle deep down into the bedrock and topped it off by filling it with cement! These legs are built to last. Richard
Built in big pieces in Louisiana then put them on a huge barge and brought around Florida to be picked up by an even bigger crane and set on the ground 50' under the surface!
Thanks for describing it for simpletons like myself. I’d be terrified being out there during a single hurricane, let alone three
It's great that you start every episode at the coffee maker aka Grumpy
to start the video and always glad to hear of the progress that is ongoing.
Thanks, a good cup of coffee helps start the day! Richard
Thanks!

I was wondering if you could maybe do a more in depth video on the coffee you guys use, I am interested in it but want to know more
Good delish blend from Black Powder Coffee! See www.blackpowdercoffee.com/collections/frying-pan-tower-nonprofit for yours! Richard
Hope this is still standing. Worry about the hurricanes.
Yep! Still is :)
I was wondering how that worked. Seems like the rust is always ahead of the tower
that's why we ask for folks help with the steel, cut bad out, weld good in!
I’ll try to get out there to help in the next year

yum coffee, couple minor cat 3 so far.
I thought you guys were Sealand for a second. How many platforms are there operating in the world do you know?
There are 3 that I know of, the Frying Pan Tower, the Diamond Shoals Tower and the Chesapeake Tower
42” round nice size, i have also heard rumors that the supports on thos structures go almost 300’ down into the seabed ?
