M3 V8 and M5/M6 V10 are just the absolute best. Would love to see those engines come back in the new cars.
M3 GTS is a bit special and another winner from Henry Catchpole. The guy is even good at the voice over parts, slowly turning into the motoring equivalent of Sir David Attenborough!
Agreed, Henry is brilliant.
his name is Catchpole? that's a very gruesome weapon to be named after.
Jeremy Clarkson: "This [The M3] is the best car, and always will be, and there's no point in ever thinking otherwise."
how many cars has he said that about lol
Alfa Giulia Quadrifoglio takes that title now. BMW died with the letter E.
He later said the M2 competition was the best M car ever made.
@@mitchleblanc For the price... m2 had a spirit of old M3...
flacjacket You wish
Crazy how much effort BMW went through this, making a stroker version of the S65 V8 just for this car
@sebastian Sm please don't spread racism in this channel, we are all here to enjoy cars.
Not a whole lot of effort. Just gotta change a few components, still has the same pistons.
They also ran this stroked 4.4l s65 in a couple race cars at the time but those cars ran slightly higher redlines and were able to make over 500hp. There was need elsewhere at bmw for the stroked s65 other than the e92 gts. Pretty cool they were real race cars though!
Kris Mathieu That’s the P65 which had a flat plane crank and likely direct injection. Lot of changes for that one.
I never understood people complaining about the price.
The brakes are 15k, a titanium exhaust at the time was close to 10k, the adjustable suspension at least 5k..seats and cage another 3k? And a bespoke engine, labour and shipping...how did anyone expect bmw to charge anything less? lapped the ring faster than a 997.1 gt3 rs so it fulfilled the brief
The E92 M3 was the last version with a true N/A Motorsport engine soul. After this you were left with turbo 6 cylinder motors with piped in sound which no longer were the core of the GT racing for BMW. If you can find a nice one right now I can’t imagine it won’t go up in value over the next 5-10 year.
993mike couldn’t agree more and said basically the same in my comment. This engine powered all GT2/GTE/GT3 cars for nearly a decade in many P65 guises as well as DTM being based on this.
6 cylinders are part of the identity of BMW
What are you talking about ?
You should extend the scope of this series to every factory M3 models ever made and I am totally serious
Coming home after a day of failed exams, and finding the latest M3 Masterpieces video is just perfect. Thus, I thank you kindly Carfection...
The E9X M3 will go down as the greatest M3 of all time. I LOVE ALL M3S but the E9X is something special.
Fact!!
Can we have a series on the Black series Mercs next?
I like this idea a lot
They've all been great aside from that god-awful SL65
jesse lewis Sounds like fun to me!
Should he also report on his broken back after driving it? I think the springs and dampers on that car is only there for looks.
Agree!
Owning and tracking my E92 M3, loving everything about it, I was excited to watch this video. I love Henry and Carfection as I often attest to in comments. But guys come on, the power button adds 100hp? In an E60 M5 yes, in the M3 it only improves throttle response by making the peddle actuate earlier in its travel. This has the best engine and gearbox combo of any M3/M4. It’s a shame the review felt a tad flat missing key details. The car itself may not have been homologated, but the P65 group of engines based on the S65 where used extensively in motorsport. Still have loved the series so far.
E92 hits the sweet spot of M3s.
Better transmission than the e46 in both manual and automatic guise oh and that high revving V8 helps!
Forget the GTS, you can have 95% as much fun in a 'normal' e92 M3 for a fraction of the cost.
These cars are on the endangered species list, experience them while you can, they're special.
Chris Plumbly couldn’t agree more every time I take mine out, owned for just over 2 years and it never very gets old. A true modern classic with a proper motorsport engine and gearbox combo. Keeping mine forever.
the v8 does not suit an m3 at all
@@Bobo-qf9oq and 1600 is really heavy tbh
Fantastic film, would love to see something like this for other cars
I've been thinking the exact same thing - subgroups of Porsches, early Ferraris, front engined Lamborghinis, Lancia front wheel drive cars, Mercedes coupes, etc. The list could go on. Put together they would make a great periodic series. The storytelling, visuals, and locations would be first rate too and there's always lots to learn from this crew.
Hot Renault RSs.
Subaru too
Henry is like a perfect 50/50 Harry Potter and wolverine
I was driving this very car 48 hours ago. Special car, engine is a masterpiece.
Show off!
Put some pics and thoughts up on ocuk if you have them :)
The original owner was sitting next to me, he is far better placed to give his thoughts on OCUK :)
Ben Critchley why on a pc building forum?
Having a 2012 E92 I can say this GTS is my dream car hands down.
This is what i was waiting for well sort of... reg E92?...... Love a loud shouty V8 and in 4K
One of my favourite sounding V8s until today!
RIP M3 V8.
Neo Kgatla what do you mean RIP! 🤪
nah man, just had the rod bearings changed in mine. It's gonna be going for a loong time. I'm never selling it lol.
Philip Manning I just picked up groceries and did some donuts while pulling out and reving up the highway. Cant beat it
Philip Manning my 335i will shit on you tho😂
1MatthewJ as in the naturally aspirated version - has more character than the twin turbo
The best m3 ever
I drive the regular M3 E92, I smile everytime I look at it!
Cant bring myself to sell mine...
@@CRUSADER168 We are not the 1st owners so when we bought it 5k miles back, we changed the rod bearings. Other than that is goes as a rocket!
Timelessness design it is such a beautiful car
I would too lol
@@CRUSADER168 It's advised to change the rod bearings every 60k miles, It's also advised to let the car warm up to temp before pushing down the peddle.
My favorite generation M3. Love this car.
Still remember Vicki throwing around an identical specimen on Fifth Gear when this first came out. Don't know if it's the beautiful spec or the nostalgia of ripping around in this in NFS, but to me, this is the most beautiful M3 till date. Although the E30 is a very close competitor, with the history associated with it, I don't see many people actually pushing them on a track.
This was the true pinnacle of bmw M engineering. After this, it all went same turbo engine everywhere, more led headlight design than true dynamic power delivery of a motor, more building "M" package lines with carbon bits than truly building 1 exemplary M car like the old days...
Jae Shim M3 CRT.....
I've met an American chap that owned one about 7 years ago on the Cabot Trail.
He was with a party of trackday enthousiasts with Lotus's, Ferraris and Porsches.
He was definitely the leader of the group and I joined them on my GSX-R for a thrilling ride around the Island of Cape Breton.
Good times.
My dream car. Too bad it costs about $200,000 in today’s money.
But man, in almost every review of the e92 GTS I’ve seen, they always said the same thing, how much fucking fun it is. What an accomplishment this thing was.
Henry you forgot to mention , the eight individual throttle bodies , hydraulic steering and the same DCT box that is fitted to the 458 italia. 👍👍
E92 M3 GUY this is exactly what I thought, fastest ratio, best steering, motorsport derived engine that has pedigree in P65 format on GT3/GTE/GT2 and with a Nurburgring 24hr win. The dct is still used by Ferrari now in uprated form for higher torque cars.
I have an E92 M3. The first two are familiar to me, but do you have a source for your third "fact"?
marcuskuip www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=159358
www.bmwblog.com/2010/04/04/worlds-first-bmw-dct-transmission-build/
it’s common knowledge that the dct used is the Getrag box that can be found in Ferrari’s with uprated intervals to allow for the extra torque of their engines.
@@marcus-44 Yep as per Patricks post , bmw use the Getrag 7DCL600 unit, the 458 is the 7DCL750 unit, essentially the same unit but uprated for extra torque.
e9x uses the ferrari california dct
In this generation my favourite is the 4 door saloon CRT. 😍
Absolute favourite!!! Couldn't wait for this vid
Sat in this exact press car at the BMW training centre, instructor could help but show a cold start and blip the throttle a touch WOW!!
Greatest Car Ever Produced
The current M4 GTS also has a apologetic rear wing, seems like a consistent modern BMW trend, we will see what the future holds.
The last great M3s. What a crackling car.
Best channel for production
Now the E92 is where is its at. The engine makes loves to your ears and the chassis is a stroke of genius. Don't hesitate on buying because it will most definitely reward you as it did with me.
YellowMarenello agree in every aspect!
IMO its a car you must own in your lifetime, however, its not a car you keep. There is a good reason why you can steal one at 90k mileage.
@@drew2548 why?
@@Chris-nj1mr guess, lol
@@Chris-nj1mr Its what makes it cool makes it unreliable. Think about the engine alone. Its has F1 heritage, High revving angry fuggin thing. And how long do F1 engines last...two races. I know isnt exactly that simple but it also is. And thats just the engine. Ive owned one and unless your pretty handy it costs quite a bit to maintain. The more fun it is, the less it lasts. Imo
Fantastic Vid guys! Henry note the e90 CRT four door saloon also had this 4.4l V8!
That's super exclusive.
the CRT is even cooler in my eyes because of that special interior with those front and rear seats where the GTS "only" has "standard" Recaro Pole Positions.
One for sale on eBay one of only 67 worldwide ,with 2K miles for £125k & only a one owner 2013 , grey/white with black/red Interior
Yes, very true. I did drive one not long after it was launched and loved it (even snuck in a lap round the ‘Ring). Marginally preferred the saloon’s chassis balance, but as an overall package it was no where near raw as the GTS.
@@HenryCatchpole do you remember how it felt in acceleration though in a straight line? Thank you for your response :)!
Henry, loving the series so far, gives me a reason to look forward to Monday’s 😊 In commenting on the homologation backstory, you may find that the e92 is most similar to the e36, where the e36 M3 GT and 318iS homologated an aero kit for the race cars in GT and Super Touring, the apologetic rear wing on the e92 M3 GTS looks to have appeared on the M3 GT4 for its second season out, though I can’t find the old GT4 catalog I had downloaded to indicate that at the moment. Keep up the great work!
Hope there will be a final épisode with laptimes just to understand progress between each gen
I don't know what it is about British documentaries, but they are so well made that you truly feel you are there with the presenter. I would probably watch a whole documentary series about Victorian era kitchen pantry installation procedures if a Brit made a documentary about it, they probably have though. Nonetheless, great video and review of BMW's best! Thank you.
A man really enjoying his work!
So the power button in the GTS actually changes something with power? In the standard car its just sharpening throttle response. I ask because at 5:32 I cannot tell if you're just being cheeky
No, just throttle response as you say. Factual inaccuracy on Henry's part to suggest that it gives 100bhp more.
Tedward It just sharpens the throttle response. All of the engines power is available at any time, regardless of power button being on or off.
@@SolidestSnake was he making a joke at 5:32 ? I heard that and was like ummm thats definitely not a thing right? Plus I already have to explain way too often that their power button on their M3 does not give them more power lol. With this video that incorrect thought is going to go viral.
Tedward I think it’s just a mistake. I actually found this review quite flat.
Tedward I think in the E60 M5 the power button did genuinely unlock a further X amount of BHP. Because the S65 V8 in this M3 is derived from the S85 V10 in that car, maybe he made the assumption that the car shared the same feature. In the E92 M3, the power button is simply for adjusting the throttle response, so the reviewer is either mislead or having a laugh.
CRT with a manual gearbox and 4.1 diff is pretty much my perfect M3.
Rob Reeves where to find it on earth within your price range should be the actual question
Best M3
Need a comparison between this and the CRT
What about the M3 CRT that you reviewed at EVO? I seem to remember that you said it was the ultimate e9x M3.
This video makes my E92 328i coupe and I very happy
Great film, love this series! Thank you. I'd love to see a similar series recounting the history of various particularly "special" Porsche cars.
Akrapovic exhaust!!!!!💯💯💯
Really loving this series.
For me, this might not be the more pure m3 but it’s definitely my favorite
The Noise it makes ❤
i already like this and it hasn't even started! LOL This channel gets better and better!
The last of naturally aspirated, the best.
What a great series, hopefully this is one of many more series to come!!
Another well detailed video. Can’t wait for you guys to complete this and jump on the ///M5s edition. That would be sick
Brilliant work thank you...PLEASE do the same series for the M5 :)
Always preferred the rarer 4dr CRT M3
I love the way you talk about cars. It would be fun if you would do a show about Elizabeth Hurley. That would be fun...
Not sure about the extra 100 bhp from the sport button. I know that on my e90 M3 it just sharpens up the throttle response. Mega vid Mr Catchpole :)
Ziggy Freud.....correct. He’s mistaking it for the E60 M5.
EvenKeel the m5 is still king
Power button only changed the throttle response in the E92 M3, didn’t add power nor did it change the exhaust note.
Oh MP he was being ironic....it’s called British humour
Alan Wayte thanks for clarifying 😊, relieved I must say, he’s my favorite automotive journalist.
Alan Wayte my guess is it’s not that and actually his ignorance. In the M5 of that generation, the Power button DID up HP from 400 to 500.
No your absolutely wrong.....do you not get British humour at all.....read old Evo magazine were he originally tested car......it’s a joke..embarrassing that you don’t get it
Brits have a wierd sense of humor
Spot on again Henry! Great work 👍
What's the next series like this going to be on? Love it
🔥🔥🔥WHAT A SERIES!!!!!🔥🔥🔥
Thank you for this great series!
Great vid, thank you Henry!
No matter how exiting the cars are, this guy sure knows how to kill the edge of it!!!! Jesus, did someone did right before this vid?
Does anyone else cruise autotrader or something similar while watching these vids or is it just me, lol.
Sir - guilty as charged.
Me too
i remember seeing one of these parked at the bmw dealer in my town. it was beautiful. too bad it cost a stupid amount of money
Induction noise 💓
Looking forward to seeing what you say about the next car you will feature in this series, as an owner.
I still remembered this car being featured in NFS The Run
My favorite car of all time from any manufactuer
I wish Carfection will do a similar series but for the M5
I beg you guys to do the M5's please!
Love the M3 GTS,M3 CSL and R34 So sad that we can’t buy these cars in the states, gotta go to Europe :(
I assume that the "power button gives another 100hp" was tongue in cheek?
Great video! Henry is excellent, too.
This sounded like thunder going around the Nurburgring!
Damn thats a good looking car
Will we see the E90 M3 CRT? The rarest of the rare!
Omg its so clean only if i can ever afford one just one
This guy could save UK's top gear.
Truly beautiful bruiser of a car, but that were stupidly expensive for what they were. I'd still have one in a heart beat though!!!
This car wasn’t even close as a GT3 rival... but it is still a impressive car
Good video keep it up brooo see you soon I seen all your car video the best
Way 👍💥👍💥👍💥👍💥👍💥👍💥
Love E92’s! In the standard car would you get a manual or DCT?
Can’t go wrong with either. Manual is more engaging while DCT gives best performance.
You can't rush the manual were as the dct is better suited.
incognito96 thanks for that, I had the e46 M3 and the manual which I loved but the manual was quite clunky which is what is making me lean towards the DCT. But I love a manual gearbox.
My hat off for you sir!
Looks like you have the M3 CS as the last special version. Why not just use the M4 GTS?
Thats the true successor to this lineup even tho it's called 4 instead of 3.
Any difference between the M3 GTS and the more popular M3 GTR?
Awesome driving 😂 going sideways in a very nice car, pretty ballzy
BMW M3 GTS E92 4.4 L V8 440 PS & 1 Cylinder got 55 PS 440/8 =55 Ps Nice engine sound
*My 2013 Competition Package gets driven daily!!*
Ahh... Perfection...
Wish this series had been based on then mainstream M3 models. Just don't really care what the GTS et al are like to drive. Too rare, ultimately built to sit in collectors' warehouses and not, ultimately indicative of the breed to drive . Good production, but I think using the generic version of each car would be far more worthwhile and revealing.
The flyby at 5:50 🤤
Please do similar episodes with the Alpines (not the bmw kind). Im talking old a110, a310, a610 and new a110. They have an interesting history that gets far to little attention these days! Cheers!
very cool BMW
Better than e46! And More Beautifull!
Wish you’d picked an M3 CRT
Power button doesnt add any power in this car ! It just adjusts mapping/ throttle bodys for better throttle responce. Its the power button in the e60 M5 adds 107 bhp
Nice sounds.....
