In college I had a huge crush on our school’s version of Caitlin Clark. She was loyal to her high school boyfriend and married him so I never had a chance. Recently the alumni magazine profiled her, had four kids, still married, is a school psychologist now and seems perfectly happy.
Sometimes people who seem great on the outside really are great.

characteristics of Caitlin Clark that separates her from the players and coaches in the WNBA are her INTELLIGENCE and MATURITY. These explains a lot of Caitlin Clark’s popularity. She is poised, has class, professional, respectful, and articulate. She is the right role model for womens basketball. Placing her side by side with those in the WNBA Caitlin Clark outshines them. Those who are specially unintelligent and immature are the ones overtly jealous of and hates Caitlin Clatk.

But most importantly she is on a whole other level talent wise. There is not one woman in the league who plays the game like CC. It drives me crazy that they try to say there’s an Angel Reese/Caitlin Clark rivalry because Angel is nowhere near the talent level as Clark. It’s so petty and childish.

I think it is so hypocritical that you have all these woman of color talking about how “they” made the league what it is and how dare a “white woman” come in to be the face of the league, if the white players of the NBA said the same thing about wilt chamberlain, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan etc.. then everyone would be crying racism but if it comes from black players then Caitlin Clark is fair game and no one wants to say what it really is? Hypocrites! Why don’t they focus on the game of basketball and forget about all the political stuff? In my opinion, it doesn’t belong. I was discussed when the NBA got all political with Black Lives Matter. I stopped watching. I couldn’t believe that “white NBA payers were forced to wear a t-shirt that said, “I was made by strong black men.” How demoralizing and racist against the white families that worked hard to raise these men! The whole Angle Reese rivalry thing is BS. Caitlin Clark is treating the issue of rivalry between her and Reese back at college like it doesn’t exist. It is Reese that keeps talking about it to make herself relevant. If she never talked about it then no one would notice her.

There were people saying she shouldn't even join the WNBA, because she was going to walk into a buzzsaw of jealousy and racism. And that is exactly how it went. No need for any additional hand-wringing and struggling to understand this. Jealousy and racism, heavy on the racism - - and that's ALL it is. To act like this is "strange" or "confusing" is to be in denial about what it really is.

More than a great player, Caitlin is a forerunner and example to the entire league how sportsmanship, tact, and humbleness can be inter-twined. Having to be on guard for the media is not easy and can wear on one over time. In a year or so perhaps this all will die down but for the remainder of this year the Clark vs Reese fans will be screaming at each other for dominance. I can’t imagine the explosion on whatever side loses rookie of the year. All the while any blatant hater can be in the category of causing undo harm on players when they are trying their hardest to succeed. Noise, noise, and more noise has risen to epic proportions in media bashing. Survival of the fittest, mentally and physically will play a role in longevity in this league.

Sounds like the people at the executive level of the WNBA who could steer things in a positive direction are too worried about protecting their current position and career to risk it by doing what it takes to move the league forward. Strong leadership is just so difficult to find. You need a person who can see the bigger picture _and_ who has the courage to turn that vision into a reality. That's rare.

I have noticed a remarkable community of black people who are rightly championing Caitlin clark. By far the biggest fan base is a silence who are very down-to-earth and value integrity of character over winning. I'm pretty sure that these two communities are fundamentally the same at their roots.
I'm not so convinced that there is a white conservative thing so interested in Caitlin Clark because of what we call skin color these days. Iowa has a majority white population and it's fair to say conservative although Iowa has progressive elements going back over 100 years far before it was a fashion, including bringing in women's basketball in 1895 always supporting girl athletes and pushing for integration just as early against the bigotry of surrounding states. My take is that it is more just the coincidence that Iowa has people who look a certain way and Caitlin Clark is born from these people, but they don't favor her because of her race per se .

The great ''white'' bad guy myth. Come to Iowa. We love everyone - in fairness - who works hard, is humble, is loyal, community minded, and had a sense of humor. THAT is why we have been at the forefront for supporting women, people of ANY ''color'' in education and sport since founding the state. The problem people are having now. We don't tolerate bullies. People are trying to twist it when we don't take a knee to their bullying. That's ok though, let them say what they want, we will continue to hold the course - and share this with anyone else who shares common sense values.

    @destinypirate 2 місяці тому +24

Great show - "Struggle Session". Love it, very observant! About two years I began phrasing this epoch:
"Caitlin Clark - The Canary in the Culture Mine." - How we treat Clark, someone who brings so much brightness and good, will reveal the true state of our cultural air. The more you learn about Caitlin the more you will understand this with vigor.
During her recent game with the Aces, the Ace's players - who are among the top in the league - became the first in the WNBA to show outward expressions of kindness and affection towards Clark .
Behind the scenes of that game Clark - and her Iowa teammate/friend Kate Martin - brought in a fan of hers, a girl who has been fighting cancer and is now on her final journey. I am sure that the Aces players saw this Act of Giving and through this - the negative spell was broken. Whatever antipathy or negative narrative they might have picked up couldn't stand against the selfless actions that reveal Caitlin Clark's true character.
Of course Clark's character has been both driven and charitable all along. I could write two pages just about the charity work that I know she's done (but would not advertise). A healthy culture would not only recognize this but would laud Clark for her good character, for her community and charitable spirit. Instead we have seen her become one of the most persecuted, abused, and demeaned public figures of this century.
I was happily surprised to see Adrienne Ross as your guest. She and I have exchanged some insights and you added valuable additions to these layered and loaded conversation.
A couple of initial notes: you're one of the few who has questioned the people behind Angel Reese. I would note that we can infer a lack of mentorship. I would frame Reese's public issues less as a lack of media training and more as lack of mentorship. I'll come back to this in a moment.
Second to these points, you noted Caitlin Clark's media savvy. While I'm sure she learned a few things at the University of Iowa I can assuredly say that the manner of Clark's communication is purely Iowan. Simple, succinct, down to earth, Common Sense driven and considerate communication is what you would expect from an Iowan who has taken a position of leadership. - For easy reference I would refer you to the speaking of Iowa Coach Bluder, Iowa Coach Farentz in football, the podcast Hawkeye of the Storm with Cory and Kachine (no formal affiliation), and of course the greatest Iowan sportsperson - Dan Gable. All of thse people represent the ethically driven, level-headed and insightful conversation of Iowans.
Why Iowan sportspeople, and leaders in other areas, are so consistent in their ethics and manner relates to a much deeper narrative on fundamental Iowa culture which in turn relates to traditional American culture. You nearly suggested this when you questioned the future of the league...
Back to the note on mentorship of Angel Reese, or lack thereof.
Angel Reese has suffered two great failings. The first was her choice of colleges or the willingness to follow through on her first... Now this will relate to one of the fundamental issues at hand for women's basketball: Why aren't players in the WNBA more famous/popular/endorsedd? Few people, if any, in the media are sorting out to an effective understanding of the source of these issues. The answer is simple, was once common knowledge, and has been re-revealed by Caitlin Clark. That would be that, the fundamental way a woman basketball player can build a fandom is by becoming a legend in the WNCAA.
This is something people knew years ago about men's ball, they lost track of that and the NBA suffers for it. Caitlin Clark just reminded people of the is truth. College is the best place for an athlete to begin building a fandom. However this, the forming of a star's legend, must be built the correct way, and that means through a pathway that is challenging and thus is inspiring.
The college game, at the top level, has been mostly uninspiring, dominated by five teams who have won 70% of championships. These teams have been allowed to monopolize talent and the majority of sports fans are not only uninspired but are repelled by the idea of All-Star juggernauts buzz sawing through level competition. Alternately, if a star player goes to her own team and, as an underdog, comes up through organic hard work and great teamwork with flawed teammates, the people will be inspired.
Angel Reese and all of the other stars before have been poorly served by the fool's Gold of going to a monopoly team where their talents are not fully developed and the fandom will never follow them to the WNBA.
Second to this, Angela Reese was not served by a mentorship that would have encouraged her to reach out in (competitive) friendship to Caitlin Clark during college. Instead Angel Reese was caught up in an anti-Clark/Iowa bigotry campaign that was kicked off by Dawn Staley, which led her to go after Clark with a chip on her shoulder. If instead Reese had had mentors who would have guided her to embrace and laud Caitlin Clark they could have formed a true Magic & Bird type of relationship. Angel Reese would have joined Caitlin Clark on the top stage (instead of always aspiring to and causing herself to be rejected from it) sharing endorsements that would have skyrocketed both of them stratospherically. Sadly she was not only bereft of broad-thinking mentorship, as most young women athletes have been, those around her encouraged her to take the back door social-media-villain chaos-causing role.

May I clarify a point? Both Caitlin and Kate Martin befriended Bailey Lux (the little girl with cancer) while they were both college students. They visited her, played board games with her, etc.
The University of Iowa encourages its student athletes to do outreach of this sort to the community.
After college, Kate Martin stayed in touch with Bailey. I'm not sure whether Caitlin did, possibly she did too.
Kate, who now plays for the Aces, was the one who collaborated with Make a Wish foundation to arrange for Bailey and her family to come to Vegas for the Fever-Aces game.
Both Caitlin and Kate arranged for their teams to sign basketballs for Bailey, and both teams posed for photos with her. I don't know why Caitlin's efforts to arrange for Bailey to meet the Fever received more media attention than Kate's comparable efforts with the Aces.
So in fairness, we need to show respect for both Kate and Caitlin. Each contributed to making the child's wish come true.

@@JE-IC Clark is a superstar. Clark is also bearing the weight of carrying the flag for good, tradition, and right actions such as using one's station to benefit others. She is under attack for this - on a level that we have rarely, if ever, seen against a public figure this century. It is imperative that her good works, that represent the good works of countless people who maintain the culture and traditions that made Clark 'possible'', are buoyed up against the onslaught...
Everything that she does recieves top billing - like Tiger Woods. Kate Martin isn't famous, like so many other good people, and due to our current communication behaviors we are unable to focus on much more than those with top billing.
Ideas of applying a different ethic to what our media focus upon are worthwhile. Similar might be the idea of public service that excludes profiteering from said service. Certainly a worthwhile concept. Neither are in a Zeitgeist that is struggling to maintain the best of our traditional ethics, let alone bringing in new ones. - The importance of emphasizing Clark's charitable works is that she is one of the very few superstars who priorititizes charity, community, and character while at the same time media has been attacking her character (with falsehoods) while propping up narcissism, violence, bullying, and abusive behavior. Martin, who isn't in the zeitgeist crosshairs, holds no center stage position in this proxy battle of the war on culture. - That is, no one is attacking her or attempting to undermine her /her associations - except of course on the Caitlin Clark ''side''. That last point is very notable.
Finally, it is common knowledge that no one exists within a vacuum. There are layers of people, especially those who work within charitable organizations themselves, and then of course those medical people (who donate their services - which is too few), and as you noted those of the University, greater Iowa, or greater community in general who support charitable acts. Clark is the the flag bearer for this. It would be great to bring everyone on to the stage. Right now there is a battle waging to tear down the flag that she is courageously carrying, if we lose this, nothing good will be recognized.

@@destinypirate I see your point. But in our efforts to support Caitlin, we shouldn't project onto her the good things done by other people.
Remember that part of how you can discern a person's character is by who they surround themselves with. Caitlin needs Kate to help her survive this onslaught.

@@JE-IC 10,000 % agreement, it is essential that some other influential women step up to hold the line with Caitlin Clark. It may only take a few, and initially it's important that Clark feel the support of her Iowa teammates and the Iowan people, however to become something more impactful she needs a fellowship of people who come from other communities. I believe Boston is the perfect person for this because we can easily recognize the intelligence, care, and thoughtfulness she exhibits. She does still have one foot connected on the side of the fence with Dawn Staley and the bully Club. However, through both her words and actions, she has made it clear that she's not really going to behave like them, she refuses to retaliate when she takes bully hits, and she places ethical intention into how she represents herself. If she could fully place herself beside Clark it would be a powerful statement within the league, women's basketball, women's sports, and to all of the young people at large watching. It is possible not only to win the right way but to be a great person in doing so. I can think of nothing that would bring more happiness than seeing those two create some charity initiatives together.
Please note that I did take your suggestion to her and I included Kate Martin in my first level comment, I did not mean to omit her except that I was trying to keep the focus on the knife edge that Caitlin Clark has been placed upon, yet you are suggestion reminds me that we should let people know that there are more people besides Caitlin Clark who are acting ethically, even within the WNBA.

Excellent conversation, Clifton and Adrienne! (Came here via Adrienne's channel.:)) Am hopeful though about the future. WNBA was totally unprepared for Caitlin, but they will learn. It will be a struggle, but they are starting to understand that they need to change. For example, Taurasi welcomed CC when their teams first met, and, post-game, acknowledged the latter's bright future. And in recent games, the opposing players, though they still guard CC with their lives, are less rough. The WNBA and its players now understand that the world's eyes are on them, and that they have to behave, and learn to grow. :) Greetings from an optimist in the Philippines! Subscribed!😊🙏💕🏀🇵🇭

What bothers me is that Caitlin Clark cannot just enjoy herself and be embraced by the league that she's going into now. It becomes a woke problem for her. It is represented by her and Angel Reese. ESPN and other black women fear the negative publicity if they support. Caitlin. It's sad that many black UA-cam channel producers have to apologize for supporting Caitlin Clark., like bear sellouts or Uncle Tom's. I would just like to see an athlete be embraced and supported. Regardless of skin color. And by the way, Caitlin has never said anything politically one way or the other. So the thing that I think is the saddest is that Caitlin cannot enjoy her popularity as she should. It's harder for her. And it's not fair.

I also agree that it’s always been said even back in 97, 98, & 99 when I was going to Liberty games - that the women’s game is a strong back to basics game - no dunking etc. I loved those games, had a team jersey (Kym Hampton) & a cool picture of Teresa Weatherspoon. Saddens me it never took off more & more so that now it’s being hobbled by this. Clifton - I am a first-time viewer of your podcast and am so very impressed on the many levels a viewer can be.... with the manner in which you put forth your thoughts & questions. My first impression that caught my attention was the timbre of your voice, as well as your command of the English language. Further, as I listened, I came to the conclusion that I was viewing a person with a high caliber of "critical thinking" ability. All of that said, from a small-town Indian boy from Alaska, that barely graduated HS in 1964.
Regarding Adrienne Ross, I've viewed her (positively) podcasts I think 2-3 times previously, due to my new interest in the WNBA & Caitlin Clark.
The 45 minutes that I spent with you two exchanging thoughts was time well spent for me.... especially since I've been rather disheartened by what I call the "decline of America" and the world.
There's more that I can express but I'll conclude here with my thought that this segment with you two should be considered a valuable thought-provoker, that should be spread far and wide.... it's a classic.... in the "same sense" that there is .... classical music (of the ages).
