    Great job of actually showing people the difference. A lot of videos don't cover the reverse portion of trimming. My boat is weird with trimming as it always rides best trimmed all the way down. I cavitate at full throttle most times if the motor isn't totally trimmed down.

      @DangarMarine  7 років тому +2

      Hey Jim, yeah, every boat hull has its own quirks that you need to figure out. You might find that your motor would benefit from a hydrofoil or adjusting the height it is mounted on the transom.

    • @TimsWorkshopTJY
      @TimsWorkshopTJY 7 років тому

      Hi Jimbo, interesting your boat rides best with the trim all the way down. Mine does too. I think it's the boat that makes the difference. I'm sure my motor was the original and set up by StarCraft. 17ft is not that big and Aluminum. Doesn't take that much to get it up on plain and nose still slightly up with no side spray. But was not aware of the reverse issue with trim. Being that ours is all the way down if a issue I guess not much we can do?

      Tim's Workshop TJY Yeah. I actually have a 15-16 foot Ropelene boat (triumph). It's a type of plastic like a kayak. It's very wide for such a short boat. It's over 60 inches at it's widest part. I think 64 inches. I have it mounted at 2nd hole and that's the best height to use per manufacturer. I actually never have problems with porpoising. Once the hull planes it always rides smooth

    Hi there Stu, great video as always. I have another tip for knowing when you trimmed too high. In full throttle I trim up until the boat starts to "jump" up and down in the water, then I trim down again until the jumping stops, there's my preferred adjustment. :)

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  7 років тому +1

      Hi Michael, yes, some hulls will definitely start to do what they call porpoising if they aren't trimmed right. It's not a comfortable was to ride at all!

    • @barney2001
      @barney2001 7 років тому +2

      Hi Stu, very good video. In my experience, most boats will porpoise before cavitating. I find that about a 1 to 2 second period gives the best speed. Usually you need to trim down from this when turning or you will cavitate.

    Hi Stu, just catching up on youtube videos this am with my Saturday coffee. Finished watching your crab net one and like the added weight idea. I have one pot that has a weighted line that came with it but the other pot has the yellow line that will float. This will solve that problem. This trim video is good info as well. Didn't know about going in reverse with trim still up will affect it also going to get a trim attachment. Thanks

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  7 років тому

      Hey Tim, yeah, those crimp on weights are really handy and very cheap. Trimming down makes a huge difference in reverse. I've actually seen a couple of accidents caused by trying to stop while trimmed right up.

    Really useful thanks. I drive safety boats and the tips re. trimming down to help low speed manoeuvrability were very useful. We use prop guards and have issues where at low speed in reverse the boats simply don't turn at all without a burst of throttle but this is often inappropriate when close to capsized boats / crews in the water, so I'm hoping this will help.

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  7 років тому

      Hey Jonathan, I certainly find trimming down makes a huge difference for all types of slow speed maneuvering, so hopefully it will work for you. :)

    FWIW... I have a small cathedral hull with a slightly marginally sized motor (Boat is 3.8m and motor is a Suz DF20) and take off and run are opposite to Stu's advice. I can only get on the plane if I trim up, lift the bow high (breaking water resistance) and then trim the bow back down for running on the plane. So bear in mind that your specific hull/motor combination could require a different approach. Thanks though for an awesome channel.

    Hi Stu, another great video! Seeing the warm weather is refreshing also. It has been brutal cold in Maine for a few weeks now, and we have a blizzard warning for tomorrow. Yaaay, not.😕
    My name is Kris, sorry about the confusion, my wife, Jen, made the you tube account. Aaand the newb just keeps shining through for me. Hahaha.
    After reading my letter to you i sound like a smug wanker. I was trying to build some credibility and describe the lack of skill and knowledge in my area. I wanted you to know you were getting high praises from a colleague and peer. Sometimes reading the words of a conversation can sound a bit off.
    Watching your videos is so refreshing, I think to myself, “this guy gets it”. Raising the young fellas sunk boat in that rough weather, ingenuity and skill at it’s finest.
    The only time i thought i could give advice was on the spark plug video. You were talking about heat ranges and what detrimental effects can happen when using too hot or cold of a plug. I have seen a plug thats too hot, like a few or more numbers higher, burn a small hole the size of a ball point pen tip into the top of a piston. Two strokes are more prone to that than four, but I have seen a four stroke air cooled small engine do the same. To cold of a plug runs rough and leaves fuel deposits unburned, so on the next power stroke there’s actually too much fuel for the next firing cycle and over a long period of time prematurely wear the piston, rings, and cylinder wall out.
    There is a certain magic to spark plugs though. I have increased the heat range in four strokes that had a cylinder with a bad valve guide, not the seal. When the engine was off, oil would leak into the cylinder, and at start up smoke for a few moments, and foul the plug. Resulting in a missfire rough running condition. I switched to a platinum plug two numbers hotter in that cylinder. The kernel for platinum and iridium plugs is a bit more resilient. I think the kernel is just a tad hotter. The result was the plug could now burn off the oil and and not foul nearly as fast. Like a year of use before a clean as opposed to a month before needing to be cleaned. I ran that engine for another 10 years, and sold the truck 2 years ago. Telling the buyer about cylinder #1 and showing him which cylinder to clean when it started to miss fire. 300k mile engine and it’s still running.
    I love motorcycles as well. We have two honda xr’s. A 2001 400 for me and a 2002 250 for Jen. The canoe in my avatar was built in the 70’s by a man named Jackson in Quebec, Canada. I think before Jackson actually became a company. Im not positive about that though. I lined the bottom with kevlar and more fiberglass because my father kept punching holes in the bottom going through white water. Just shy of 21’ with a 4.5’ beam. Powered by a 1984 8hp johnson. It weighs almost 500 lbs now with anchor, fuel, and engine. This past august we got a 1987 bayliner cobra 1800, with a chrysler/force 125. Alot of people I’ve met since think that engine is no good. I know when i saw it my first impression was “dang the engineer who designed this did a bang up job. I can get to every nut, bolt, wire, without tearing everything apart.” I could field strip it right on the boat if i had to. The boat was a rare find, well maintained, and an affordable price. About the same amount to upgrade the old 8 hp johnson to a yamaha 4 stroke 10 horse. I feel like a buying genius for getting an 18’ boat with a 125 engine for the price of a new 10 hp yamaha engine. 😀 one of the locals at Little Sebago lake actually motored up to us to ask if i had rebuilt and restored the boat. I told him no, we just got it, the previous owner had taken good care of it.
    We are the same age also, born in ‘87, no not really, ‘72. 😀 Take care Stu, I sure wish we weren’t half a world apart, you’re a good bloke.
    -Kris

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  7 років тому +1

      Hey Kris (sorry I got the name wrong!) Spark plugs certainly are a complex thing, and for that reason I think most people should stick to the recommended plug, but I liked you ingenious solution to the problem you were having with oil seepage. Sounds like you scored a really good deal on the new boat. I find the idea of a motor where you can get to everything easily so very appealing. I hate the way new motors are so cramped and packed in under the cowling. '72 was a fine year for births I can tell. ;)

    Great video. Super informative! I was wondering if you might do an add-on video for boats that have trim tabs. I upgraded to a larger boat that has trim tabs for the first time. Would love to see a video that breaks down when to adjust motor trim, vs when to adjust the tabs, and how to make them “play nice.” Because I have been finding it a bit challenging figuring out what to adjust when. Especially open ocean here in Hawaii. Thanks for all the great vids. I have tackled a ton of big maintenance jobs that I would not have had the guts to do without your tips and tutorials.

    Should also mention that when trimmed up and running across lake you are more sensitive to waves and boat can begin jumping. When this happens slightly I'll trim down to settle the boat down, but often with smaller boats on my lake you unfortunately have to back off the throttle also due to larger waves. Gotta love a small boat on Lake Lanier in GA.(sarcasm) lol

    At lower speeds increasing to planing if you trim up the motor moving along, doesnt hold position. Slowly drops.

      Thanks Jack. It is possible, I will probably take the Green Machine down one day. You need to be very careful with weather and fuel though. My neighbour did it on a bad day one in here boat that is about the same size and the weather was so rough that she couldn't stop driving the boat to change fuel tanks. Fortunately she made it on one tank but if she had to stop and swap over it would have meant the boat would have been at the mercy of the waves while she was at the back.

    Nice tips Stu.How do you trim a manual trim/tilt boat?Do you start at the second hole up and go from there?

    • @leonbloor
      @leonbloor 7 років тому +2

      Fabian Sosa when you can’t adjust the trim while driving you have to compromise, start low and test how the boat takes off, corners and as Stu demonstrated slows when you hit reverse. Increase the position until you start to find it cavitation on cornering and drop back one.
      I tend to adjust mine at times, a long drive on flat water and you can save some fuel going a notch up because less of the boat will be in the water, if you are in rougher water trim it back down to avoid cavitation

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  7 років тому

      Yes, as Leon says it is mostly about trimming until it starts to ventilate and then go back down one. Just be sure to check your bite in reverse as well as how it turns.

Curious though if you would or could (no offence) but get a bigger boat and go out into unprotected waters and show the trim that you would want to use heading into a sea vs following a sea. Hi There, hope you are well. Just a quick question. See crossing a bar or the like what do you thing the best trim position is. I always felt trimming down was best but i see people doing all sorts especially in those Haulover inlet videos.

    Hey stu, got a 2005 15 hp mariner that all of a sudden won't release from its uppermost tilt position back to right down. The bail spring is ok it's in unlock, reverse lock ok, but it's the kind of thing I have to push that big metal triangular lock back into the swivel bracket with my hands to guide it inside the running locks. It used to operate fine recently, and no parts seem to be broken or missing. As you lift to the highest tilt point that spring should pull the triangle back in to slide inside of the runners? Nothing on the bet I can find, but have a mate that has exact same thing. Hoping you have seen this before in the 9.9-30hp merc/mariner/tohi motors. CheersMatt

      They can be very fiddly these stands and it usually comes down to something being either bent rather than broken or just plain old corrosion. This video is on repair one and might help ua-cam.com/video/Topfyfm4bFg/v-deo.html

    2) When I add remote trim do I leave the pin out so it can go all the way down?

    Thank you for the video. I'm stumped and so is the dealer! Our boat, a 20 foot (6 m) with a 115 hp outboard, lists to port when under power. It sits flat at no or slow speed with near idle rpm. Weight is more or less equal port to starboard. I have adjusted the trim tab that sits just above the prop from the 4 o'clock position to the 6 o'clock position (straight) with no or minimum change to the list to port. I have a transducer on the starboard side of the transom but it only extends not even 0.5 cm below the hull which is as far up as I can set it and still get depth readings with a moving boat. Any other ideas? My next step is to run with a bag of sand in the starboard locker.

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  5 років тому

      A hydrofoil may help ua-cam.com/video/-TG2I9M8XoY/v-deo.html Otherwise it could be that the hull isn't perfectly symmetrical. It is more common that you think.

    I have a question for you. I am trying to figure out why my trim won’t work. It’s a 1985 150 mercury black max. When I bought the boat the trim would only go up so I bought 2 new solenoids for it and now I cannot figure out the wiring. If I put the power on one of the solenoids it will go up but will only click going down. Then if I switch the power cable to the other one it will go down. I placed the second power cable on the other and then both would not work and neither would click. What do you think could be wrong?

    Hi, I have a 21ft long outboard with flat hull but having a 2" keel running from bow to stern, stops about 1 ft before the transom. My question is do I set the cavitation plate level to the flat hull or lower to the keel. At the moment I set it in between. What would you advise...

    Can you explain engine / stern drive hydrofoils. I read that.. at least on stern drives such as Mercruiser there are opinions that they are a bad idea. What take do you have on this?.. Just noted that you recently made a video on these on outboards. I best watch it.

      Also I had wondered why I haven't been seeing notifications of your new videos so I had to look tonsee you indeed had a lot aonce my last notification I DO have the bell checked but am not getting them. Just an FYI.. maybe YT is being stupid again...

    • @stanpatterson5033
      @stanpatterson5033 7 років тому +2

      I'm getting those notifications regularly, but on any given day, YT is prone to being stupid, and sometimes for weeks on end, too. I have regular problems with the other notification, the one that lets you know there is a reply to a comment. Often I can see the little red square, but when I click on the bell, a blank dialogue box opens up, with nothing to see in it.

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  7 років тому

      My main thought with them really is that if you don't have a problem with how the hull rides, don't use them. If you do, they may be worth a shot but you won't really know how well they solve the problem until you try unfortunately.

    Hiw about trimming sounder reveivers? Mine either catches too much water at speed or is unable to keep depth readings on the plane. Is this nirmal?

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  7 років тому +1

      I have mind pretty much straight out and having had any problem with it. It may be an issue of mounting height more than angle. I'm trying to think whether mine came with drilling template. Here is the video on the install ua-cam.com/video/hLPsD4oo2vA/v-deo.html

    • @anttiroppola4414
      @anttiroppola4414 7 років тому

      Thanks for that. Much the same, but I suspect I need to lower the transducer even more to get clean flow. Suspect the mounting plate may actually be the culprit so I'll trim that too.

    How best to trim for head and following sea?

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  7 років тому +1

      Heading into the waves I trim up as far as I can to stay as dry as I can - the Green Machine doesn't have much freeboard and is a very wet boat unfortunately. With a following sea I would sit on the back of a wave and trim down more.

    hi, i have a SIB, 84lbs 3m inflatable with air floor. yamaha 6hp 4stroke, 60lbs,trim pin at 1st position by transom. i just can't get it to go faster than 8mph, can't expect any planing. at full throttle the stern sinks and bow raises, total weight; 2x people+cargo+engine 390lbs do i need a bigger engine? or ride with 1 passenger only. with one passenger it would weigh, 295lb. Should i buy a 9.9hp 2 stroke or get a 9.9hp 4stroke? 4 strokes are heavy, and do you think its ok to put a 15hp 2stroke on it? the boat is rated for 10hp outboard and overall carrying weight of 1100lbs. thanks for your time.

    • @DangarMarine
      @DangarMarine  5 років тому +1

      I wouldn't exceed the manufacturers rating for the hull. My inflatable is 2.3m, so quite small, and doesn't fair well with 2 people in it. It's only a 6hp too so you might find the 9.9 makes a difference. You could also try moving more weight forward in the boat if you can.

      Ok thanks,i own a Merc 175 V6 - 2 stroke -1997,when i bought the boat the merc gave me a lot of problems,most iron out,execpt,
      Burns plugs all the time,changed to hotter plugs as to advise from mercury,
      on WOT throttle she cuts out and comes back alive again,
      changed the stator as to advise from Mercury,
      still does the same,
      I have now bought a oil injection pump ,after testing that too much oil is injected,(could relate to the burned plugs) i can not troll as my Merc dies after a while,
      What else should be looking at if none of these worked out?
