Golden rule planting orange seeds. Don't let them dry after removing from the fruit as the germination rate drops drastically. Best is eat the fruit and spit the pits right into the soil, no fuzzing around with paper towels and peeling. And good luck with your MANDARINES and not Oranges..

A trial was done to see what method is best.Peeling the protective layer off the pips and sprouting them in a wet kitchen towel and ziplock bag - or just planting the pips straight into compost. The best result was just planting the seeds as they are into compost.A lot fail to germintate so its best to do a lot of pips until you get lucky.

The best root stock for citrus fruits is what's called sour orange. In fact we have plenty of it in Iran. We call it Naarenj. It has a very pleasant sour taste and very aromatic. Then all sorts of citrus Fruita are grafted to this. This root stock is quite hardi and grows well. So don't waste your time with tangerines or Satsuma or mandarins.
