My daughter was speech delayed and we used sign language to help her. It really helped! When she was 3, we went to the Indianapolis zoo. She went up to the gorilla exhibit and started to sign to them. A female went up to her and signed back. It was so cool to watch them interact with each other using sign language! Wish I recorded it, but I’ll never forget it.

That's amazing. My daughter is going through the same thing at the age 3. It helps to sign because now she doesn't get as upset because she can let us know what she needs

How beautiful! My grandtwins are fraternal & 1 is a bit more advanced than the other. The slower one cries this ridiculously screeching cry at random times as well as when she wants something, RIGHT NOW or doesn't get hervwsy. I told my daughter that she's being manipulative with it & trying tobusevit as her language & only meansbof communicating. I'm going to bringbit to their Pediatrician's attention & keep monitoring her. I'm limited on what I remember in sign language, so I'm learning, again to teach them. Maybe it will help🤷🏾‍♀️🙏🏾

I was going to college to be a ASL interpreter and learned sign language there. I've been using it with my daughter, now 18 months, she has many more signs she can communicate with than verbal words. It's been SUPER helpful in reducing both of our frustration in communication.
BTW-sleepy is signed by drawing the fingers down across the face into the same handshape as more. Or you can place your flat palm on the side of your face as a more action specific gesture.

We also used baby sign language with all 3 of our kids, we had the same signs for food/eat,more,all gone, and they too made the ‘world’s smallest violin’ 😜sign for ‘night night’(naptime/bedtime),my twins had lovies (small soft blankets)that they would rub between their fingers like that. We didn’t use the w for water sign or the milk sign, the food sign worked for ‘mama milk’ or later on ‘bobbas’ and solid food, they could let me know which they wanted pretty easily. We also had the sign for read/book (both hands pretending to open a book) and bounce/ball (hand motion like you are bouncing a ball). My oldest and I learned thank you from ‘Blue’s Clues’ (palm facing face, fingertips touch chin, hand down palm up toward whoever you are thanking). It really did help with early communication and frustration for sure on both sides!😃

Yes!!! Baby signs are GREAT!! It makes my heart smile soooo much to see y’all doing this. And just for clarity, these are ASL signs (American Sign Language). There’s British Sign Language, French Sign Language, etc. 😉
Also, the sign for “tired” is basically an open hand in front of your face (palm facing your nose), then close your fingers into a fist, dragging downward toward your chin, like eyelids closing.
“No” is like your sign for sleepy-forefinger and middle fingertips tapping down onto your thumb. We used that a LOT during the “threenage” years! 😜

I never had any children but I've had pets. When I eat something that I'm sharing with my pet and there is no more I would hold up my empty hands and say all gone. Instead of hanging around looking for more they would just go lie down.

And sign language is super interesting! I know a little bit of finnish sign language (i'm studying special needs teaching) and i'm planning to study more. Even though finnish/american/french etc. sign languages differ, there are also many similarities. For example Kristen's sign for "food" is the same as in finnish sigh language "to eat". Lot of the signs are also "intuitive", for example the "no more" sign we've been using without being taught to do so :)

    • @lindybudd3053
      @lindybudd3053 4 роки тому +2

@@mazzyy5915 You can start it at birth, but I think most people start it around three or four months. They won't start picking it up until around 6 months at the youngest. As your baby is playing you do the sign while saying the word. For example, while playing with your baby you can stop say more and do the sign and then start playing with the same toy again. Same for All Done, if you are finished playing do the sign while saying All Done. With any language the more you use it around them the more they will pick it up. Just keep in mind that even if you start at birth they developmentally won't start mimicking you until around 6 months. Around 6 months is when they start having the motor skills to do the signs. 6 months is also when a baby starts being cognitively aware or their surroundings.

I'm gonna get on my soap box here for a second.
I'm an ASL interpreter and have been working for the past 7 years and have known ASL for over 10. I just wanted to emphasize the fact that American Sign Language is a fully fledged language independent of English or any other spoken or signed language in the world. It is my hope that you guys, and everyone else that will read this, understands that and respects the fact that ASL is cherished by the Deaf community; as it is their language. "Baby Signs" isn't really set up to be a language but rather as a tool to aid hearing babies to communicate before they can speak. It is then often dropped as speaking English is the "right" way.
I implore you to also educate yourselves on Deaf Culture and more on ASL. It will be a great way to not only expand your knowledge about a (often oppressed) minority, but also expose your children to rich culture and language. Maybe check out some local deaf events in your area. There might be community classes for learning ASL with deaf people instructing. :)

I've always loved sign language. At an elementary school I attended, I had another classmate that was deaf and his sign language teacher started teaching all the kids to sign. The school allowed her to take some time each week to teach us the alphabet and different signs that I still remember today. I live in a small area that doesn't seem to offer anything like you mentioned. Any suggestions on how someone could go about learning more?

My son had speech apraxia and I used a few signs but didn’t practice enough with him so we did them sometimes and he didn’t really learn them. He had a few words at 3. By 3-1/2 he had a full vocabulary. It was amazing.
Many people are worried that “if I teach my baby sign language they won’t talk”. Well talking is easier than signing so once they learn the words the sign language will stop.
So go ahead and teach sign language!

  • @fralinsandfriends

I think sign is so valuable with as many deaf people that hospitals need interpreters for. This is a wonderful way of getting children used to using sign interactive with speaking. One thing I've noticed with you guys that is great. You let each child be who they are. From what I've seen, you treat them with equal love, but you don't expect Atlas to progress like Chell has, nor do you expect Chell to be immediately in big sister mode by excluding her while Atlas needs more attention. 👋😀

Kristen, Thank you for sharing this video! 😃 My daughter who is 2 1/2 has been signing since she was 6 months and continues to do so. She uses signing as a form as communication with talking by expressing her wants and needs daily. She knows 30+growing to learn more daily and her ABC's. I plan to do the same with my son. I find ASL such a beautiful language and should be taught to anyone at any age.

I have used sign language for the last 2 years in high school, finishing up with ASL 112 online course of this term and already planned on taking ASL 113 next term. Believe it or not, when I transfer to a new school this fall, I'll be minoring in ASL. I do believe that sign language is a great way to improve your child's ability to talk later on. So, good on you Kristen for taking that up! The official sign for tired is when you have both hands open with your four fingers touching the chest area and you slump it down like you're tired. Sleepy is when you have one hand in a crab position, close to your face, and you close that "crab snapping hand" while closing your eyes.

We strongly encouraged parents to use it at home so that the children who were not yet speaking had a great way to communicate their needs. Your sign for tired and all done are incorrect. I googled ASL to verify because my daughter used ASL on all 3 of her kids and those two didn't look quite right to me as you were doing them, hence looking them up. I understand the one for tired is one Chell made up, and you did make it clear that it's not the official sign. That said, I think it is wonderful that you are using sign language for them. It cuts down on the babies frustration when they can communicate before they can talk. I just wish I had known to do that 40 years ago when I was raising my daughter and son.

Wow this was the first video I've watched on sign language for babies and my son is also named Atlas! He's 4 months old ☺️ I'm taking that as a 'sign' that this is something I definitely need to do!

We have used *drink* for years even with my kids being almost adults now. Works great when everyone is talking in a room and you want your kid to get a drink or the other way around. *Simple* *sign* ...Make a fist with your thumb and pinky out and put your thumb to your mouth and motion as if you're tipping back a cup

Ive been putting some basic signs into my youngest daughters daily routine because since she cant talk and i dont understand what it is she exactly wants she is actually getting the hang of it and ive been only doing it for a couple weeks and she FINALLY signed more food to me 🤗🤗🤗🤗 my husband thought it was weird that I wanted to do this but now that she finally did it hes on board and understands why I want to do this... Its hard to understand what a 1yr old wants since they cant talk.

This is based on the sign language used for people with learning disabilities, this really useful and can be used to have tiny conversations. I used it when I was a carer in a unit in The UK and it is ok for kids to make up their own signs . but be careful it has been known to stop some children talking.

Might want to add a side note in your video. The way you are signing "all done" is actually applause.
Correctly signed, all done is one flick of the wrists out.

    • @llpitbullsophie9665
      @llpitbullsophie9665 3 роки тому

Yeah but for baby’s it will be easier to tell because if they just do one flick you might not realize that they’re signing they could just bewhacking their arms around in the air

I've always been fascinated by sign language (currently trying to learn PSE on recommendation from someone who is deaf), so thank you for sharing this! I hadn't learned any of those signs yet (I can only sign some of the basics, like "please", "thank you", "sorry", "yes", "no", ect).
Are these actual signs (in ASL or PSE), or is it just specific to babies? There are so many versions of sign language that it's hard to keep them all straight to make sure I'm learning one specific type so I don't get confused (or confuse others). Last I heard, baby sign language can be a little different from "adult" sign language such as ASL or PSE.

I only wish I had known of it with my first two children. My daughter was able to tell me what she wanted or needed at 5 mos. without the guessing. Food, milk, water, diaper etc.

We use the DVD from Signing Time. Our almost 3 yo has been able to sign so manybdifferent things and it helped us when she coudlnt talk (or when we personally cannot talk either Cruz our mouths are full or in a loud room) .

Another sign we use still with our older kids in public is for walking. We point our pointer and middle finger down and make them "walk" in the air. The kids know if I call their name and they see that or if I catch their eye silently and do that, they are to immediately slow. If they don't, they know I make them walk all the way back to a beginning point i choose and walk to where they had run to
They go back as many times as it takes to remember to walk both directions.

That is really a cool thing to do and it would be good to do a video for Just for Kids showing these! Also, just curious but what happened to Cory doing the Sunday vlog videos by himself that he said he was going to do starting in January, started to do then stopped? I can understand family things can get in the way and he has the other channels too, but just wondered as I was liking those while they lasted, as well as the family vlogs.
