What I've found, over the years, is that *generally* (and certainly not in every case) dog owners like dogs. Period. They don't tend to like or deem worthy any other animals. Cat owners *generally* (and certainly not in every case) tend to like most animals, including dogs. They just don't necessarily want to live with those other animals. I think that goes to that open-mindedness described in this video.
I like kitty cats because not only do they look like mini panthers 😻 but because they clean themselves, they don't smell, they don't slobber over everything, they're light so when they jump on you or lay on you it doesn't knock you over, and most importantly, even if they're meowy like my Princess Penny they are QUIET. I love my peace and quiet and kitties are conducive to that environment. My kitty cats Fritz Zwicky and Penny Dreadful are not aloof at all either! They are very cuddly and they often follow me around 😹 Penny is a stray rescue so she is a bit skittish around other people and it takes her a while to warm up to anyone but me, but Fritz is a little social butterfly and loves other people immediately. I think dogs are cute but I could never live with one and I hate it when you go to a dog owner's house and let their dog jump on you... plus they usually bark at EVERY-THING 🙉
Me too. I grew up with a dog but when he passed we had already adopted a cat. They were best buddies for years but the cat and I seemed to react to his death the same way and I became a cat person. We’ve had cats and dogs over the years but now that we are older dog care is too much.
Apart from short breaks after a cat has died. I have had cats around all my life. I haven't had a dog as a pet since childhood, but i did look after a neighbour's German Shepherd for 12 month's while they were overseas and really enjoyed that. I suppose I am a cat lover first, but i think all animals are wonderful. About 40 years ago I had a budgerigar named Charlie who is up there with my favourite pet cats. In the last few years i have lived with PTSD, my cats have really helped me cope with that.
We had a cat named Pebbles and she was a tortie too. Pebbles was diagnosed with a slight heart murmur at 3 years old. She passed away about 4 years ago aged nearly 21.
I miss my torti. Age 19 when she left me. Then lost my calico, age 21. The biggest problem with cats is they always leave a hole in your heart when the leave. I still miss every cat I lost.
Interesting contrast on the last point, and I admit I do fall into the majority of cat people who would not keep the dog. I would foster the dog if there were no other options and try to find it a better home than I know I would give it, because I just plain don't have the patience to treat a dog the way they deserve to be cared for and I'm aware of that. So I'll hand the puppy over to someone who would love and give it the life it deserved, because the dog can't help being a dog and still deserves love.
Control issue. Dogs (and I do like dogs too) are companions who are highly trainable and easier to control by owners.They also give affection more freely to the owner (as well as protection). Cats are more independent and do things on their own terms (they can be trained a little and are affectionate if they know they can trust you). Some people want an animal companion they are easily able to control. Some- not knocking dog owners and dog lovers. When it comes to hating cats…I believe it’s an issue of control.
My friend has three cats that I cat sit for...would never trade them for dogs...I would miss all the judgemental looks...the watching me in the morning cleaning their litter boxes and food/water bowls...the inspection after the cleaning of the litter box, and refilling of bowls...and the looks of amazement when dummy me actually does it right...yeah, they think they're smarter, but they still need me to open that can of food... 🐈🐈🐈...😁
Through my grade school years, we lived on a farm, so there were always barn cats to play with. We also had a cat or two that was allowed in the house. We always had a dog too. Once I reached adulthood and moved away from my parents' home, I had to have a cat for companionship. I've had up to seven cats in the house, indoor only, and now I just have four. I never considered getting a dog for myself, due to the problem of my work hours and the hassle of it having to go outside vs. the convenience of the cats' litter boxes.

My Partner and I both were born in homes with no pets and have lots of allergies. My daughter was born (at home) into a home with a dog and a cat. She has zero allergies. All the best to everyone.
Cat people understand the amount of time and investment a dog requires compared to a cat, so in the example of them declining a free puppy it makes sense... That's not just a free companion being offered, but more over a bunch of daily chores ('walk the dog' 3-4 times a day, and MUCH more attention required) As to where our cats are usually content as long as we take care of a few litter boxes every few days and provide food, they are much more self sufficient and don't require the constant work to keep happy/satisfied. While the opposite being with the roles reversed. Already custom to dealing with dog chores daily, adding a cat into the mix isnt really adding a lot of work. Comparatively at least...
Not my cat he’s way more work than my dog. Cat scoop the litter box out twice a day. Dog pick up dog poop once a day with a poop bag. Cat screaming feed me now Dog just sitting quietly by his bowl. Cat go to town every two weeks for more litter. Dog purchased poop bags every two months. Dog, goes with me on my daily walks. Cat Is Home shredding my curtains.
It's just much more pleasing to be loved by an animal because you deserve it rather than that it just has to adore every person in sight. Wtf is wrong with 26% of people disliking cats is beyound me, I know lots of people who were attacked by dogs, but only a few stories where people were seriously injured by cats and in most of those cats were provoked.
I have two little girls and they both adore me. Not only obvious too me but my sister sees it as well. For instance...coming home from work, greeted by both at the door and as soon as the door starts to open one or both will push through too welcome me home or when I wake up both are waiting at my bedroom door. We have conversations back and forth and just absolute love for each other.
I grew up with dogs and I still think dogs are great. But somehow cats made their way into my life. From there they get into your heart - and I'm a lost cause. On a more serious note, I would be interested to see what sorts of results (regarding personality) these studies would produce in populations outside the United States.
I had a rabbit, dog, fishes, and now cat, I love them all. They all have their different needs and care, so I can't put myself into any category other than just a love for four-legged mammal and fresh water aquatic creatures.

Ironically my boy Sid has a similar personality to those guys I have known, specifically my best friend Chris. Super cute and demanding and will bug you until he gets what he wants. He's relentless...lol...Sid is very friendly and not as skittish as many other cats. I think that's because he was abandoned and lived on the mean streets of the suburb I live in...lol..
In other words, we are our pets. People who don’t like cats want something that will obey. Cats are also born comedians, which you understand if you have one, and it’s cerebral, where’s dogs are more slapstick. Cats are also tiny little babies with toe beans and tiny paws and little faces that get to our hearts, no matter their age.

I've currently twelve cats and four feral rescue kittens. Cats 24/7. Lots of time, money, patience, love, learning, companionship, fun, and very rewarding friendships over the past thirty years. The only dogs I'd have extreme prejudice against are coyotes. Out in the wild okay, but in the city, a deadly pest to guard against.
I am equally both cat and dog person. Depending on the animal's personality thats who im closer to. We had 6 dogs and 12 cats at one time. At that time i was closer to certain dogs. Right now with 2 dogs and 6 cats, im closer to one of my cats. I absolutely loved all of them back then and now, I'll have to say there are certain personalities of an animal not their species. My husband and i cant see our home without both. We're just animal lovers. We also have chickens and im very close to them. I love my chickens.❤
All applies to me, a cat lover, though if it was convenient, I would like a dog to take for walks, but my rescue cat would not tolerate other cats or dogs.

I was a dog person in my younger--more energetic and outgoing-years. Now I'm 78 and a cat person--more inward and solitary self. The studies show the difference, but didn't say how people can change. Plus: when my dogs died I wanted to die. I love cats but the connection isn't so strong.
My cat acts like a dog & a cat in one. I got lucky cuz I get the best of both worlds lol 😂 I suppose I have a nice balance of introvert& extrovert qualities which is why my cat is the same haha 😂 I love my furbaby!!! Meow 🐱

I (61M) have 2 Torties and they are the best companions that I have ever had. I love all animals and I would have preferred a dog but I am unable to take a dog for walks every day and the dog's health would suffer as a result.
I love both but have a stronger preference for cats, I find companionship with my cats as well as love, and both animals have their own qualities and cuteness. But kitties are the best 😁
So now the prescient question: is it nurture or nature which impact these traits on humans? Do cat lovers pattern themselves after their feline companions or were these traits naturally occurring?
I love cats and dogs. I have had both cats and dogs at the same time. I pet cats because they are easier for me to take care of. Dogs require a bit more care as far as having to walk them. My schedule is too busy to walk a dog. I do TNR. But before my life changed I had dogs also. I am partial to German Shepard though. But honestly if my life was not so hectic and I had time for a German Shepard (cat friendly)I would have one.
I've always been a cat lover and I think dogs are great but just not for me. One thing I've come across is dog people telling they hate cats when I've told them I have one like, what tf? I'm also the stereotypical older single woman living in an apartment. I wouldn't have it any other way❤😁
If cats are so independent why do mine follow me around very much like dogs? Why do my cats come when I call for them? This is all a bunch of bull****. Cats are just easier to take care of and cuddlier than dogs. Cats are also just cuter than dogs in my opinion period, that’s it nothing more. I think I'm a "cat person" purely for, like, aesthetic reasons? Cats are just more visually appealing than dogs to me; it's kinda like how purple is my *favorite* color, but that doesn't mean I can't love other colors. Everything that "cat people" report disliking about dogs--barking, clinginess, higher activity levels--don't bother me on, like, an existential level. If someone offered me that puppy I would ask if it had littermates I could have, too 😂

What about people who love both cats & dogs? How would rate? I have had both cats & dogs most of my life! The only reason I don't have dogs now is my health. I would say I'm 60% cat person and 40% dog person. I would not like any persian type cats. I do not like that "punched in face" in any animal. I would love just about any other type cat. Now with dogs, the only breeds I would consider having are German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, and Labradors. German Shepherds are my top favorit and the main one I would want. Goldens & Labs would be secondary companions to having German Shepherds! Any time I have both cats and dogs, I love them for different reasons, but equally!
Generally, I like dogs but I don't want one in my life. They are too high maintenance (kinda like a husband or boyfriend). Too busy and wiggley and very needy. Cats are chill, even kitttens once zoomies are over. I love cats.
I don’t think the studies you reference take into account cause and effect. If you live in an urban apartment, obviously a cat is easier to keep. If you have a house and a fenced-in yard, it’s easier to manage the needs of a dog. I grew up with dogs, but my adult life has been dominated by cats. They are both wonderful, but a cat is much less work and doesn’t need to go out at 6 am to pee. I trained my cats to not awaken me in the morning by kicking them out of the room if they woke me up. Then I didn’t feed them immediately. So I had no problems.

It is disturbing how many people dislike or even hate cats. To me, it sounds like a mental disorder.

I like they are not filthy like dogs. They are disgusting. You never need to bathe a cat. Dogs stink, literally.

Ironically my boy Sid has a similar personality to those guys I have known, specifically my best friend Chris. Super cute and demanding and will bug you until he gets what he wants. He's relentless...lol...Sid is very friendly and not as skittish as many other cats. I think that's because he was abandoned and lived on the mean streets of the suburb I live in...lol..
In other words, we are our pets. People who don’t like cats want something that will obey. Cats are also born comedians, which you understand if you have one, and it’s cerebral, where’s dogs are more slapstick. Cats are also tiny little babies with toe beans and tiny paws and little faces that get to our hearts, no matter their age.

I've currently twelve cats and four feral rescue kittens. Cats 24/7. Lots of time, money, patience, love, learning, companionship, fun, and very rewarding friendships over the past thirty years. The only dogs I'd have extreme prejudice against are coyotes. Out in the wild okay, but in the city, a deadly pest to guard against.
I am equally both cat and dog person. Depending on the animal's personality thats who im closer to. We had 6 dogs and 12 cats at one time. At that time i was closer to certain dogs. Right now with 2 dogs and 6 cats, im closer to one of my cats. I absolutely loved all of them back then and now, I'll have to say there are certain personalities of an animal not their species. My husband and i cant see our home without both. We're just animal lovers. We also have chickens and im very close to them. I love my chickens.❤

I was a dog person in my younger--more energetic and outgoing-years. Now I'm 78 and a cat person--more inward and solitary self. The studies show the difference, but didn't say how people can change. Plus: when my dogs died I wanted to die. I love cats but the connection isn't so strong.

I (61M) have 2 Torties and they are the best companions that I have ever had. I love all animals and I would have preferred a dog but I am unable to take a dog for walks every day and the dog's health would suffer as a result.

I love both but have a stronger preference for cats, I find companionship with my cats as well as love, and both animals have their own qualities and cuteness. But kitties are the best 😁

I love cats and dogs. I have had both cats and dogs at the same time. I pet cats because they are easier for me to take care of. Dogs require a bit more care as far as having to walk them. My schedule is too busy to walk a dog. I do TNR. But before my life changed I had dogs also. I am partial to German Shepard though. But honestly if my life was not so hectic and I had time for a German Shepard (cat friendly)I would have one.
I've always been a cat lover and I think dogs are great but just not for me. One thing I've come across is dog people telling they hate cats when I've told them I have one like, what tf? I'm also the stereotypical older single woman living in an apartment. I wouldn't have it any other way❤😁

If cats are so independent why do mine follow me around very much like dogs? Why do my cats come when I call for them? This is all a bunch of bull****. Cats are just easier to take care of and cuddlier than dogs. Cats are also just cuter than dogs in my opinion period, that’s it nothing more. All that being said,I like dogs I just don’t want the responsibility of caring for one. I raised my kids, I don’t want to raise a dog

I think I'm a "cat person" purely for, like, aesthetic reasons? Cats are just more visually appealing than dogs to me; it's kinda like how purple is my *favorite* color, but that doesn't mean I can't love other colors.
Everything that "cat people" report disliking about dogs--barking, clinginess, higher activity levels--don't bother me on, like, an existential level. If someone offered me that puppy I would ask if it had littermates I could have, too 😂

I have had both cats & dogs most of my life! The only reason I don't have dogs now is my health. I would say I'm 60% cat person and 40% dog person. I would not like any persian type cats. I do not like that "punched in face" in any animal. I would love just about any other type cat. Now with dogs, the only breeds I would consider having are German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, and Labradors. German Shepherds are my top favorit and the main one I would want. Goldens & Labs would be secondary companions to having German Shepherds! Any time I have both cats and dogs, I love them for different reasons, but equally!
Generally, I like dogs but I don't want one in my life. They are too high maintenance (kinda like a husband or boyfriend). Too busy and wiggley and very needy. Cats are chill, even kitttens once zoomies are over. I love cats.

Love all animals & did not grow up with them. Cats are easier to keep than dogs; had dogs & a horse earlier in life & cats later in life. 🤷🏻♀️

I don’t think the studies you reference take into account cause and effect. If you live in an urban apartment, obviously a cat is easier to keep. If you have a house and a fenced-in yard, it’s easier to manage the needs of a dog.
I grew up with dogs, but my adult life has been dominated by cats. They are both wonderful, but a cat is much less work and doesn’t need to go out at 6 am to pee. I trained my cats to not awaken me in the morning by kicking them out of the room if they woke me up. Then I didn’t feed them immediately. So I had no problems.
We carry cat food in our car for strays, dogs or cats 👍
