      @@NicolasFairfordNicolas, this was a beautiful tour of Cliveden House, it is gorgeous and just love all the interiors. I so appreciate and enjoy when you take us to these Hotels and take us on tours. Just loved the use of the grey wallpaper incorporated into this home and grey carpeting in some areas. The wood panelling in your room was exquisite and so cozy. What a wonderful bathroom and view from the tub. The breakfast buffet looked amazing, as the dining room. Thank you again.

      Nicolas,
      Thank you for sharing Cliveden House with us. An incredibly luxurious and spectacular hotel. How remarkable and special it is that these historic country homes are often converted into hotels.

    Hi Nathan! Hi Nicolas! Thank you for the tour of this stunning manor house! Speaking of "if the walls could talk," quantum physics tells us that linear time is an illusion, so all the things that have happened in that house are still happening there right now, you're just in a different dimension from it! Mind blowing isn't it? I always think of these things when I'm in historical buildings.

    I saw a t.v. programme about Cliveden but you showed it in much more detail so thank you. I think one of the most luxurious things would be to have a fireplace in the bathroom. We're coming to the end of a very hot and dry summer here in Western Australia, so it was lovely to see rainy weather and cosy fires. I wish I could stay at one of those stately homes.

      Nancy Langhorne Astor, of Virginia, was not only known for her beauty, she was also witty, clever, and smart. She was the first woman MP to take a seat. Nancy was also antisemitic, anti-catholic, sympathic to Nazism, and a racist, even more than what would have been considered normal for her generation. Her sister, Irene Langhorne, was exceptionally beautiful and was one of the models of the "Gibson Girl". Irene was considered to represent the ideal American beauty of the late 1800s/early 1900s.

    Nicolas!! - Wow!! - what a beautiful elegant home - is the architecture Edwardian style?? just watching you lifts one's spirit - I had to laugh when you mentioned the panning of the camera - dizziness came to mind!! - something you don't do - your visuals are always stunning - Nathan looks like a lovely soul - I like him - I always enjoy your Editorials - thank you for sharing - much love.

    • @EyeByBrian
      @EyeByBrian 4 місяці тому

      Edwardian? No offence to you intended, but since you are interested in architecture it may be helpful for you to understand the relation between architectural ‘styles’ and historical periods. English architectural history is typically categorized by era, which often-although not always-is so named for its monarchial era, so for example buildings constructed in England between circa 1070 and 1250 are generally referred to as ‘Norman’, and a subset of these buildings, most notably many churches and cathedrals from c. late 12thC and beyond are more specifically ‘Gothic’ in style; Tudor’ (late 15th to early 17thC) which includes more specifically ‘Elizabethan’ (1480 - c.1620); ‘Jacobean’ (the Latin form of James; King James ruled Scotland, and then both Scotland and England for a time, dying in 1625); ‘English Baroque’ (somewhat confusing as this post-Jacobean historical era covers the reign of Charles I, the Interregnum period of Oliver Cromwell, the reign of Charles II, William and Mary, and Queen Anne, and contains examples of several architectural styles; a mix of Classical Greek and Roman, Italian Renaissance, continuation of Tudor styles, etc); Georgian (1714 - the 1830s), which is largely typified by its resurgence of Classical Greek and Roman styles. And so on, and so on. The ‘Edwardian’ period in British history runs from just 1901 to 1910. Buildings built in this era are often a spin on English baroque (so Christopher Wren was an influence). So, while at any time one can ostensibly build in a style that draws from a *previous* era, one cannot, for obvious reasons, find an ‘Edwardian’ building built before 1901. The present Cliveden House was built in the Victorian period, in 1851. As far as its style, it is a blend of Palladian (essentially an iteration of 16thC Venetian neoclassical) and Roman 15thC styles. Hope this helps!

    • @judithropata2269
      @judithropata2269 4 місяці тому +1

      Thank you for this stunning editorial on the difference between Architectural styles & Historical periods - so happy you have informed me - I was born & raised in New Zealand - a young country compared to Britain & Europe with no such luxury of period buildings - Australia is much the same - I feel privileged you have opened up new & exciting doors for me - my guess - judging from the knowledge you have imparted to me you are a University Professor - I appreciate you taking time to write to me.

    • @EyeByBrian
      @EyeByBrian 4 місяці тому

      You're very welcome! As I hope my response implied, and as a further point, identifying the architectural and interior decorative styles of a building in relation to its age can be challenging, often because various owners of a building can (and often do) modify the building with 'upgrades', additions, and/or decor selections which in many cases can involve embracing the styles of a later or earlier period than the actual one of the building itself. As you may know, in the UK many historically significant structures are 'protected' by various statutes (you have probably heard of a building being 'Grade One Listed', or 'Grade Two Listed') which, in the interest of architectural heritage, significantly limit the types of changes to the building--most especially structural changes, as well as exterior changes to the building's aesthetic (type of window, roofing material, paint colour selection)-- that the owner may wish to make. Cheers. @@judithropata2269

    Actually, the first woman to be elected to the Westminster Parliament was Lady Constance Markievicz (Countess Markievicz) and not Lady Astor.
    However, being an arch Irish Republican, the Countess refused to take her seat in the English House. She was, though, the first elected female MP.

    Nicholas, your presentations of Britain's best places are always an inspiration to me. You have the perfect balance of formality and casualness, blending the refined manners of Old England with an easy-going modern accessibility. I'm always happy to see and hear whatever you have to show and tell about the places you visit, as your knowledge of all things elegant is both broad and deep. I was mortified to learn from your video on Clivedon that the name is pronounced like "lived-in" rather than "lied in," as I have been mispronouncing it all these years I've known it- thanks for the correction. I also enjoy your fashion tips and learning about your experiences with the various men's toiletry items you feature. Thanks for sharing this information also, as many of these products are not too well-known here in the U.S. At 66, I'm one of the lucky men still with a full head of hair, and a face almost as smooth and cherubic as your own, and like you, I do my best to keep it that way! My husband and I are in the beginning stages of planning a trip to England and Scotland sometime in the next year or so, and have agreed that we simply must take you to tea at whatever your favorite place is in Ediburgh. And if you ever come to California, we would be delighted to show you around. I'm retired now but used to be a high-end tour guide myself, so I know my way around the state quite well, from the redwood forests of the north to the sagebrush deserts of the south. Thanks again for your excellent work, and Cheers! -Roger Osborne, Ventura, California

      And the pictures in the bathroom weren’t level. Truly shocking that basics like this are neglected by Housekeeping. Clearly the types who stay here don’t much care about, or understand, class, quality and standards. Still, it’ll suit perfectly the types who DO stay there, many or most of whom will have more money - or borrowings - than sense.

    • @swilson3354
      @swilson3354 4 місяці тому +2

      @keving331 I agree on the housekeeping, but I think you're a bit harsh on the clientele! Maybe they're too polite to complain, I'll never have the funds to stay there, but I don't think I'd rummage up the courage to complain!...I'd probably straighten a few lampshades myself. The more money than sense comment did make me giggle, though. I'll end with, if your opinion of the "types" that stay in Clivedon is so low, this is probably the wrong channel for you.

    Your right Nicolas, Cliveden House is magnificent. We have also stayed in many historical properties while away on holiday in different parts of the world but the luxurious detail all over that house is truly beautiful. It reminds me of a castle that we stayed at, in Ireland, called Lough Rynn Castle. So glad that you and your friend enjoyed your stay so much. Hi to you from Western Australia 👋

    Thank you for this, what an incredible place. My grandmother had a painting of Cliveden hanging in her home when I was a child, and I always dreamed of visiting. This is the first tour I've ever seen of it and I think if I visited I'd never leave. (I do plan to go someday!) You are so lucky indeed to have such lovely places to visit in the UK. It's a little harder to find such glorious homes - much less stay in them - here in the U.S. Thanks again!
