  • Our Dad, Hades, is a bit of a control freak. Prince Zagreus is our name, and escaping is the game. Time to hit the road with a little help from our friends on Olympus (Zeus, Athena, Poseidon ringing any bells?). We'll need to make it through the pits of Tartarus, the burning plains of Asphodel, the verdant fields of Elysium... and who knows what beyond that?
    I know a ton about Greek mythology (thank you very much, seven years of Latin in school). So come along and enjoy a run from a guy who will get all the references and will help you understand them too!

    Wow, this was incredibly fun and refreshing to watch. Not only do you have a pretty good idea what you're doing, but you also have the knowledge to get all the references to Greek mythology. Hades being a game PACKED with references (both overt and subtle), and me being a Greek mythology nerd myself, it was GREAT watching you pointing out little things most people would miss. I love this game. I didn't get to playing it until the spring of 2021 and played it all day every day for months. My favorite thing is just how many little tidbits get included that make me recognize something from mythology (or admittedly something I learned from Overly Sarcastic Productions.) That makes it extra special to see someone else enjoying because they know their history/mythology.

      @Nat_the_Chicken 2 роки тому +5

      Yeah the pomegranates were linked to Persephone's story in a very specific way which he might have gone into on a later episode. The version I heard says, if you're brought to the underworld before dying, and you eat food from there, you can never leave, so when Hades kidnapped Persephone and brought her down there, she ate six pomegranate seeds and that forced her to live there for six months out of every year. They didn't really use that connection in the game's story, they just had this nice little reference to that.

    I'm sure you later realized the name of the third fury (after Megaera and Alecto), but the name you accidentally used here, Callisto, was I believe one of Jupiter's mortal consorts from Roman myth. I don't remember much about her specifically, but she was lucky enough to get one of the planet Jupiter's four largest moons named after her!
    (If you know some Greek and Roman mythology it's interesting to see how the names were applied to the bodies in our solar system; in general astronomers tried to name the moons of each planet after minor characters related to the corresponding god.)

    One thing: the Achilles story, she couldn't "re-dip". A second contact with that particular river(i think it was Styx?)If it didn't just kill him outright, would have shattered his brain and memories if I'm recalling the 5 rivers capabilities correctly.
    Edit: no, the memories was lethe I think, but I believe I'm right that a second contact with Styx would kill him.

    • @GalacticOdyssey
      @GalacticOdyssey  Рік тому +3

      Good question! It does differ from the Judeo-Christian sense, insomuch as not everyone who goes to the Underworld is punished for eternity. However, there are indeed portions of Hades where the wicked receive punishments that fit certain crimes (see Sisyphus, Tantalus, Ixion), typically in Tartarus. On the other hand, a region like Elysium in Hades was where heroes would receive blessed rest. And in between, Asphodel is where you are stripped of your memories and identity and wander eternally in a dream-like state.
      For the word Hell itself, we actually have to thank the Norse. Helheim is a similar realm to Hades, ruled by the jotunn Hel (or Hela). This is also a relatively neutral place, but seen as much less desirable than Valhalla, where warriors who die gloriously in battle are taken.
      So, it’s complicated! Saying “Hell” means something different whether you’re Greek, Norse, or Judeo-Christian, and in all three traditions, your mileage may vary based on how virtuous (relative to the belief system) a life you lived.
      Hope that helps!

    • @GalacticOdyssey
      @GalacticOdyssey  Рік тому +2

      @@ejokurirulezz Thanks for your reply. I'm afraid I have to disagree on a number of points:
      1. Elysian Fields vs. Elysium is a distinction without a difference; classicists regularly refer to them in both ways. It is not unusual for this blessed region to be portrayed as existing in the Underworld. The Greco-Roman poet Statius places Elysium along the banks of the river Lethe in the Underworld: "The shade whom by the law of Hades profound the further bank of Lethe, Elysium, hath not yet received."
      2. Tartarus (the commonly anglicized spelling of the Greek Τάρταρος) is not the same as Hades, it is in fact the deepest region of the Underworld. Apollodorus, a Greek scholar & historian, refers to it thusly, "But them Sky bound and cast into Tartarus, a gloomy place in Hades as far distant from earth as earth is distant from the sky." In this text (and others), there is a clear delineation between the Underworld in general and the even worse pits of Tartarus.
      3. Asphodel: You are correct that many people thought of the asphodel flower as food preferred by the dead, and as such, placed them by graves. However, it's also an undeniable fact that Asphodel was known as a region of the Underworld. Here is Homer in The Odyssey, 24. 1- 204: "Past the streams of Oceanus they went, past the rock Leukas, past the gates of the sun and the land of dreams, and quickly came to the mead of Asphodel, where the spirits dwell, phantoms of men who have done with toils."
      I can tell you are passionate about accuracy in mythology; not only do I understand that passion, I also respect it. It would be foolish of me to claim to be perfect on the Classics. However, I have made every effort to support my claims through textual evidence. I would encourage you to foster discussion in the spirit of a mutual desire to exchange ideas. As Socrates himself said, “The highest form of human excellence is to question oneself and others.”

      You think no African or Middle-Eastern person ever made it to Ancient Greece? Race is a white people's construct, people used to look at themselves and others through tribes and whatnot. A black Greek-speaking person was likely more seen as "us" than a white person, who spoke a different language. I even watched a material that stated that those snow white statues from Greece used to be colourful, some of which might've even been dark-skinned.
      And even if the devs only wanted a diverse cast for a diverse player base, that's fine too. Whitewashing is a thing, blackwashing is not. It's also not hard to understand the difference.
