  • I show you how to make a new cover (and pad) for any size ironing board. It's really easy!
    You can find info about the Ikea hack ironing board in the title card image at www.shinyhappyw....

    Thank you SO much for this instructional video. My ironing board cover is looking very bad and I will definitely do this soon. I just wanted to mention that my mother used to buy new covers and once or twice a new pad, but she never took off the old ones. She just put the new one on top and it was nicely padded. That was a LONG time ago. I actually have my grandmother's ironing board. Heavy and Sturdy. They don't make them like that anymore!

    So very glad I accidentally found your video. I have the exact board but couldn't find covers (54"x18") to replace my current, worn one. I did NOT want to buy a new board as the Michael Graves is fabulous, as you can attest! So even though I don't sew, your clear, thorough instruction in the video makes me feel confident that I can do this project.
    One question: Would you use Fireguard-type spray to pretreat the fabric? I iron a lot of heavy cotton clothing, so my iron is always on the maximum heat setting.
    Thanks a zillion, Wendi---- you've saved me from having to replace an already-great ironing board! : )

    Great video thanks for posting. I was glad to see what products you you used for your padding.

    My under pad looked liked yours. I used it as a pattern for my Warm & Natural Cotton batting and then put it back on the board as an extra pad because I don't like hard ironing surfaces.

    Can I use a couple layers of felt or similar fabric as the badding/lining? Also, all I have is yarn..I can maybe use cotton yarn?

  • @WendiGratz
    @WendiGratz  11 років тому

    Definitely don't use that metallic coated fabric. It will reflect too much heat back and will often scorch your fabric. Plus it will interfere with the awesomeness of the wool. The wool will hold heat and steam and really work your fabric from both sides. It's terrific!

    Thanks. It's a really cute cover. Yours is the 2nd video where I have seen a pieced cover. Do the seams put marks on what you are ironing? I know I can use one fabric but the pieced ones are eye candy.

    Would it not be easier to use elastic instead of a string? And also to sew the padding down to the cover--it would move around less?

    Thanks for the great vid! Can you tell me if it's better to use bias tape than fold the cover fabric into a channel for the drawstring? Also, I've hot-water-washed and high-heat dried an old wool blanket to use for the pad, but was planning to add a layer of that silver aluminum-coated fabric directly under the pretty fabric thinking it would reflect heat back up into the item being ironed. Is this overkill in that I have wool for the pad?

    What kind of string did you use. I have a board with nothing, so I have to start from scratch. I do not have an old ironing board cover to go by.

      I don't remember exactly. Nothing fancy - just cheap string from the hardware store.

    I'm just wondering why you didn't leave the original padding and place the new batting on top of it. would it have been too much padding?

    • @WendiGratz
      @WendiGratz  8 років тому

      +oldladytoofast Yes - too much padding actually makes it not work as well.

    Thanks! I just spent over 100.00 for a replacement cover. This will be invaluable in the future. Shouldn't it be a fire proof coating on it?

    • @WendiGratz
      @WendiGratz  9 років тому +1

      PAMELA FEINBERG I don't put any kind of coating on mine - and now I wonder if that's why store-bought covers always feel kind of gross. Maybe they're required to have it.

    • @pamelafeinberg8880
      @pamelafeinberg8880 9 років тому

      Maybe...Thanks for getting back to me though. For those who want it, it is probably available in a spray or something.

    Hi I watch this again n what kind of string rope?? Also black thing called to hold the sting ?? I want to make this cover hope I understand ??

    • @WendiGratz
      @WendiGratz  7 років тому

      Any kind of string or thin rope will work, as long as it's not stretchy. And the black thing is called a cord lock or a cord stop (different brands use different names).
