  • In this video I go over how awesome music video DVD's were. Whether it was a compilation of an artist's entire video catalog, epic live performances, or just the bizarre, interesting oddities. Music video DVDs added a completely new and exciting way to experience music.

    Around 2004, I started buying music video dvd, being in the radio industry I have collected a lot of the Promo only, and other promotional service dvd releases as well as trading with others to get older video collections from ETV and telegenics, also some good collections on laserdisc like mtv closet classics, the tube's (where the lead singer tells u to flip the disc over) and many commercial sets, usa and imported. You are right having the physical media is best because you control what you want to see in the best quality & no ads. You get versions that nay not be available. Great video from a music video collector.

    I worked at a record store in the mid 2000s and the sheer amount of these things on offer was unbelievable. Bands that you'd never think would have a DVD, had at least one. Even if it was just a collection of music videos...
    Edit dude I just remembered to ask, do you remember ENHANCED CD's? Music CDs that you could put in your PC and get bonus content? You should do a video on those! On the back of the jewel case it would say "Enhanced CD" at the bottom

    I loved music video DVDs! There was a time where music videos were only on MTV a few times and then disappeared forever. So it was great to cheaply buy some DVDs and see 10 year old videos you thought you’d never see again. 📀

    • @DancingwithGhosts
      @DancingwithGhosts  Місяць тому +1

      absolutely! and to see for the first time videos you didn't even know existed. I would often wonder why I would see a lot of a certain video but not the other, probably boiled down to behind the scenes politics at Mtv or the song popularity

    • @GTV-Japan
      @GTV-Japan Місяць тому

      They clearly had to play what was most popular but even mega hits were out in less than a year. But did MTV decide what was a hit? Yes. Certainly. Were you old enough to remember the makeover MTV had in 1997? Tried to take it back to the original format. Total Request Live was a serious show at 10 pm. Lots of interactivity aimed at older audiences. But then it didn’t work and they went with teeny bopper stuff and ran with it forever after.

    I'm glad that I have ABBA's music videos on DVD because, while the 4K remasters generally were improvements, the colour grading on the "Super Trouper" video has a super green tint to it that makes Frida look like she's beginning to turn into the She-Hulk while the standard definition DVD version definitely did not have that green tint. (On the other hand, the ABBA video DVD I have has part of the visuals in "Waterloo" looped for some reason while the 4K version has the missing part of the film restored.)
    I have a Weird Al Yankovic music video compilation DVD from the late 1990s but, when the spoof biopic WEIRD came out, I was reminded of his earlier 1985 mockumentary The ComplEAT Al which I had rented as a kid and which I noticed was still available on DVD at Amazon Canada. It's got the music videos from his first three albums but I was mainly interested in the biopic portions and I had completely forgotten about the extended sequence with Al's first trip to Japan which was where I first learned about the existence of "Pachinko" machines.

    As a former DVD purchasing addict I gotta show love for music DVDs, truly a lost art (along with DVD menus). While the Chris Cunningham DVD is a cornerstone of my collection, the two music DVDs I watched more than any other were NIN's "And all that could have been" and Marilyn Manson's "Guns God and Government". Both have amazing editing, and both have extra content that any fan would eat up (ie Manson performing with NIN at MSG, and a behind the scenes montage of MM's tour featuring all the Holywood tracks that didn't make it into the main performance). The one thing I thought you'd mention but didn't was NIN's "Broken" movie (maybe because it was never released on DVD). The only way to get that movie for most of the 90's was to know someone who had it and get them to dub it for you. I saw a so-so copy of it when i was about 17-18 and it truly disturbed me, and honestly traumatized me for many years and I'm still not sure if some of the more violent bits were real or not.

    My suggestion is to make a video on CD compilations like "NOW! That's What I Call Music", as well as ones made by companies like Razor & Tie (as mentioned in "What's the deal with Kidz Bop?" video) and Time Life Music that were sold on TV in the 90's; these include the likes of "Monster Ballads", "Sounds of the Eighties", "Rock This Way" and "Living in the 90's", to name a few. While this trend has bygone thanks to Spotify, UA-cam and Apple Music, I owned several of these growing up and they were my introduction to many classic songs and artists/bands.

    Still have all of my music DVDs, mostly metal concerts. Fun to put on during pregaming beers or on a night with the boys. A good thing about the music DVDs is that many of them have high audio quality, from 700kbs-1500 kbps, which is so much better than the compressed sound from some ripped concert on youtube. I usually find the stereo track to sound better than the 5.1 if they offer the choice. I'd say my most played music DVD is Ozzy live at budokan from 2002.
    A thought on music videos: was watching VH1 and MTV the other day and they air a bunch of 80s and 2000s music videos in really poor video quality. It would be so cool if someone took the time to transfer them to HD, if that's even possible. They could have such a cultural impact from that, instead of looking like old relics.

    I remember Green Jellÿ/Jellö's original schtick was they were a video-only band, so their first album, Cereal Killer, was originally only released as a compilation of videos. It was a cool gimmick, but presumably it didn't bring in a lot of money and it was soon after repackaged on CD/cassette as the "Cereal Killer Soundtrack". Sonic Youth made videos for every song on the Goo LP and released it as a video compilation. I love Sonic Youth, but most of the Goo videos are cheap and uninteresting.

      the like... 5 solid minutes of constant applause and freak outs at the beginning of the show is mind blowing, then they'd cheer more when he simply removed his sunglasses.. younger people will never know how big of a deal MJ was

    I love my music DVD collection. Some of them can be found on UA-cam, but it's always a crapshoot if it's gonna be a complete, high quality, official upload, or if you'll have to sift through dozens of fan uploads of varying quality to try and piece together the full experience.
    One really annoying thing I've noticed about finding some old thrash metal music videos is that the uploads can be super low quality. While that is understandable as far as the video is concerned, it is unacceptable to have the audio sound so bad as well. Especially when it's just the unedited version of a standard studio track. You may not have access to the masters anymore, but just download the friggin' mp3 and replace the audio.

      yeah.. for the audio to sound like shit too that's gotta be a pretttyyy damn low res upload.. even at 128kbps mp3's can still sound passable

    I still collect hard copy anything. Including concerts. Digital is for the birds. Nobody actually owns anything, and it can be taken from you in an instant.
    I’ll have my movies and music, uncensored, forever. 🤷

    That is the ONLY great thing that modern/digital tech brought that I genuinely LOVE, UA-cam for music videos! It is fantastic the staggeringly huge collection that you can bring up by entering the details of your favourite musician or group/act. There is also extensive live footage from the majority of artists. Obviously this, like ALL digital media, is only the case until UA-cam no longer proves profitable.

    If you want THE greatest music video of all time (multiple award winning!) then please check out Smack My Bitch Up by The Prodigy! An expensive to produce music video that couldn't/wouldn't be played on the vast majority of TV channels/Music Video channels.
