Jani is the most underrated songwriter from the 80s

Totally agree. And a great front man- check out concert footage when they were in their prime. The only song of theirs I ever skip is cherry pie. It’s too bad the label made them do it and it’s what they are known for.

First time I saw Warrant live was when they opened for Paul at L'Amour Brooklyn in New York...I didn't know them from anything but I was blown away and I bought DRFSR the next day. The hilarity of the night was being next to Jani in the coat check line...he still had to pay to get his "street" jacket back! 😹

I'm going to bow down to Miss Althea if she somehow ties Warrant with hide. And this is a great song. Their first album is fantastic.

Just a fun little hair metal nugget that to this day is always great live, albeit much different without Jani - may he rest in peace. ❤ He was an AMAZING song writer and front man - I always had a blast at their shows! And this video (as well as the whole Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich album) is more like 35 years old…YIKES! Except for Bucksley, all the casting was homegrown: Joey Allen was the ninja, Erik Turner was the accountant, Jani was the swami, and Jerry Dixon and Steven Sweet were Bucksley’s girls! They would never make it RuPaul’s Drag Race! 😹
To answer Mike B’s challenge of connecting Warrant to hide…. My off-the-top-of-my-head cursory response to that is: Warrant’s song Cherry Pie was dedicated to the president of Sony Music Entertainment (U.S. Division), Don Ienner. hide, as a member of X, was signed to Japan’s division of Sony Music Entertainment. Being that Don came on board in the late 80’s, I am fairly confident he was present at business meetings when X came to L.A. or New York to discuss international distribution and branding within Sony. Being that hide was Yoshiki’s right-hand man, he definitely would have been involved in those conversations. It also entirely possible (and likely) Don was present at X’s May 1991 press conference in Los Angeles and/or the August 1992 press conference in New York - the one in which they announced the name change to X Japan and officially introduced Heath as Taiji’s replacement. And yeah…hide, Taiji, and Heath are ALL up there in Rock and Roll Heaven with Jani if you want to count an afterlife connection.

@@bueymb But wait, there's MORE....according to hide's brother Hiroshi and the Pinky Promise book, which includes a catalog of hide's entire CD collection (which numbered in the thousands), he owned Cherry Pie and Dog Eat Dog. I would wager a guess that hide had DRFSR on cassette (maybe even vinyl)....considering his tastes and other bands/titles he owned in the genre, I would find it hard to believe he would have the other 2 albums but not that one. I came across some rumblings about hide (and other members of X) supposedly being present at one of Warrant's shows in Japan in late April 1991; however, I believe they were already in Los Angeles preparing for the press conference at that time.

Warrant's best album is "Dog Eat Dog". You need to listen to "All My Bridges Are Burning" from Dog Eat Dog.

I saw them several times from large arenas to dive bars. Jani always gave 100%. He's one of those you would have loved to have been able to see and hear after the grunge thing went away. He wrote some terrific songs. I'm a huge fan of his song Stronger Now.
If you like a bluesy rock guitar solo that will surprise you check out 14 yr old Taj Farrant. He's definitely going to be one of the best. He's already had 4 of his original songs go to #1 on the iTunes blues charts. Check him out playing Gary Moore's Parisienne Walkways. ua-cam.com/video/PMdqV4xfUe4/v-deo.htmlsi=cWSWx0zAIFtE11Ex
