I used to play with my siblings under the huge frame while my mom and her Relief Society sisters tied quilts for charity. Such wonderful memories. ❤

I loved this tutorial. My mom ties a quilt for each of her great grandchildren when they graduate from high school. She is 86 and still going strong. It is fun to get together and help her tie the quilt. I have learned many things about her as a child during this time. I now need to write all of these stories and memories in a journal. Thanks for your tips!

I like hand tied quilts ,although I like them with a thicker batting, then they feel so cozy . Everyone can’t machine quilt, I say finish it anyway you can and be proud of it.💕💕

Jenny, my "first quilt" was hand tied...and was given to my mom for her 70th birthday when she was visiting me in Missouri! It was a blue and white quilt, done in the Lover's Knot pattern. She loved it! She is no longer with us, so I received the quilt back. I will always cherish it!

Since I couldn’t get out to my quilter during the pandemic, I tied the quilt I made for my nephews birthday. I used variegated yarn that matched the colors of the squares. It turned out really cute.

Oh Jenny! This brings back so many memories of hand tying quilts! I had a large sit down frame that I set up on saw-horse stands. It filled the whole living room, and my many kids would play under the quilts that were stretched out on it as I worked. Those kids are now grown up with grown up kids of their own and those quilts have long gone to the resting place of dearly loved blankies. (The ties would usually become lumpy and sometimes pull out after years of washing and being dragged all over the house.) I confess that I like the look of machine quilting so much more than tying. But the good old tied quilts had a much loved place in my home, and in my family's story. Thank for the tutorial, and the memories.

I’ve hand tied over a thousand charity baby quilts using perle cotton or embroidery floss and the same type of knot. Works really well, is finished quickly, and as far as I know, it holds up well through many washings. I also have a small section of a well-used old family quilt (pre-WWII) that I framed (one each for myself, my mom and my two sisters). It was tied this way using yarn. The quilt was falling apart but the tying stayed put! A great old method that still does the job!

MY granny taught me to hand tie on her quilts many years ago. Now I lay out my quilt and baste with a pin everywhere I will want a tie I then hang it over the back of my kitchen chair so that it hangs free. I can sit in a comfy chair and reach one hand up and under the quilt to tie.

We tie most of the quilts we donate in a charity group I am a part of and we secure the quilt sandwich to the table with clips and tape so it is held taut and use the curved upholstery needles to pickup all three layers by kind of scooping up a 1/4 inch or so with the needle and stringing the thread/yarn along like you showed and cutting and tying at the end.

My grandmother showed me how to use 1x2 boards, c-clamps, and the backs of her dining room chairs as a quilt frame when tying quilts. I did it this way for years and it makes it easy for multiple people to tie at the same time. 3-4 people can easily tie a queen size in an afternoon.

To me quilting represents the past, the present and the future. It is a reflective time as we hold the quilts done ...most of them tied...by loved ones who are no longer with us. It is a time of making memories, laughter, hugs, sharing feelings and always chocolate. It is passing along the art of giving to a new baby, a new bride or special occasion.
How to tie a quilt has opened up thoughts this afternoon of the past, present and future as I unpack my stash and make make a new home in a new state. Tying two UFOs will be my first goal as soon as I locate which box they have called home during the move. Thank you Jenny!

Thanks for sharing this simple technique. I like to mix hand tying and machine quilting in some of my quilts. I'm currently making a quilt from 6" snowball blocks and crumb blocks. I've hand tied the snowball blocks with the thread as an accent to the plain centers. I machine quilted the crumb blocks and the combination is really cute. I love the freedom to improvise!

I've tied all my quilts until 2 days ago when I tried machine quilting. Never again - going back to tied. I have an issue with a couple things Jenny said. First, I start in the middle and work my way out, side to side then up and down. Second, I go through the quilt once again before tieing it and the first time I loop twice then tie it in a square knot. Makes it more secure.

She used rhe 100% cotton crohet thread with a bigger needle and eye, making rhemold fashion square knot.Tsught me to go near rhe seams first to secure it place. I find it more relaxing then machine quilting. I will do a straight stitch in ditch though. I have to say between both hand tie is my favorite and relaxing

I have a hand tied quilt that was given to me when I was 10. The woman, who gave it to me, was given the quilt when she was a little girl, so it is probably 50 years or more old. I am not fond of the colors used, but I loved the panels depicting puppies and kittens. The rest of the quilt was done in brown and cream with orange yarn ties in the cream colored blocks. It was on my bed for years out of sentiment for the woman who gave it to me. Then it spent more than a decade in my cedar chest. I still have it, but I haven't used it in ages.

For someone that is using yarn I found a great needle for that... (may freek some out but believe me this is a great needle) Go by your local Funeral Home and ask them to order your or if they have a new one and would sell it to you (some are really nice and will give it to you) An "S" curved Autopsy needle... they come in sizes that will fit your hand easy enough large or small even in between. It has wings on the side of it like a Denim needle and really works great with pulling that large a "thread" through the hole. Having Arthritis in my hands working with this kind of needle makes it so much easier and not as painful. Thank you for sharing this great old way of tying off our quilts

When I hand tie a quilt I clamp all the sides to a table so it’s taut. I use curved needles with about 6 feet of thread. I also divide my quilt into quadrants and start at the middle working out with the long thread. After all the spaces have stitches in them I cut the thread apart between stitches, tie with a square knot and trim tails to 1/2” (never have tails longer than 1/2” for baby quilts. They could get wet and wrap around a finger and cut off circulation). I then put a drop of fray check on each knot for added security. With this technique I can tie a queen size quilt in about an hour or less.

What do you use to baste the layers? I’d like to try spray adhesive, but worry about overspray. o you use fusible batting? Does that make the quilt less drapable? Might be a good topic for a video? Thanks for all you do!

    • @sherrys5713
      @sherrys5713 4 роки тому +6

Cathy Smith I was leery of using spray adhesive because the mist goes everywhere. I came up with an easy solution. Get a 2 liter drink bottle and cut off the top and bottom (you now have about a 6 in tube). Lay out your quilt and fold half of it out of the way. Put the tube on the batting near the fold and lightly spray into the tube. Move the tube over and spray again. Keep doing that all the way across the quilt. Then you cover what you’ve just spray basted with the top layer and proceed to the next area. Keep doing that til you get to the end, then do the other side. Easy, fast and everything doesn’t get covered in sticky spray. Good luck and enjoy.

Sherry S Great tip, Sherry. I follow other quilt instructors and there is one (Just Get It Done Quilts) that hangs her sandwich layers on a wall to do her basting. (Think how gravity would keep all the wrinkles out!) Anyway, your tip with directing the spray precisely through a big tube would be so easy on a vertical surface. One thing I have really dreaded is that nasty, sticky overspray Thanks for sharing.

Granny knots will come out while square knots won't. They are much softer to lie on also. I use a empty cigarette pack for measurements, that way all is consistent. I prefer a straight needle to a curved one because it won't gather more top fabric than bottom and make poofies in your top. Although not as stylish as a machine quilted, the warmest quilts are tied with 2 to 3 inch batting, if you can find it. They are light and are terrific for cold climates.
    Happy piecing and tying!

I actually hand tied parts and machine quilted parts. Even he noticed that I used different colors to hand tie so it would not take away from the characters. Enjoy! PS He loved it!

Also, where is the *QUACK!!* ?? 🦆😂

Yes! They do survive machine washing and drying. I learned from my mom to make a quilt out of 2 flat sheets, back in the 60's. We tied with matching yarn. But my great grandmother used some type of a floss, not embroidery or crochet. That was how she taught me to hand sew also and use both a treacle and electric sewing machine.
You can't use cotton or wool batting though. Only polyfiber or your bats will fall apart and be clumpy and shrunk. Always tie a square type knot. Granny knots come apart with use and make a bigger knot which is uncomfortable to lie or sit on.

@@donnakeeley7924 I have a tied quilt, made sometime in the 30's that has a cotton batting in it. It has survived all the washings over the years.

I have a few hand pice vintage quilt tops and I am not sure if I should quilt them myself, the blocks are not exactly square and I mostly use my walking foot. Another option would be to send it to be quilted at MSQ. But I'm not sure if machine quilting would disrespect all the hand work. My last option was to density tie it, I am worried about the original hand work is going to come apart. Any thoughts?

You could also go to the Amish community or - a place like Nebraska state U - they have quilters who do handwork.

There are some excellent UA-cam videos on how to hand quilt. I had a hand stitched signature quilt I put together from blocks found when my mother-in-law passed away. Took it to Missouri Star and was told that because the material was so old (30s & 40s) the machines would be too hard on it and it should be hand quilted.

I wonder what hand-tying would look like on a rustic style panel quilt since there isn't any seams besides in the border to disguise the ties.

I'm going to finish off my current quilt by hand tying with embroidery floss. How much will I need for an 80 x 80 quilt?

Hi, Linda! The answer is "it depends"... on factors such as how many strands you'll use and how close you'll tie. A rough rule-of-thumb would be needing about 10 skeins and tie about 5" apart. Hope this helps!

Is there a good way to make the tying even? Do you mark the lines? I want to hand tie a baby quilt that’s made with a panel so there aren’t seams to follow. @missouristarquiltcompany

I need that lipstick pincushion!!! Our Wednesday church group ties quilts here in Vancouver, Canada, and another church member pieces the tops at her home. We had such good times while we could get together! I’m looking forward to starting again, but it may be after this Summer, because the attic gets so hot then!

Hi! Your neighbor here in Abbotsford! Our group originally started with ladies from our church...we've never hand tied...but do all machine stitching with our home domestic machines...we also had good times but sadly had to pause our group in March as well...we meet every Thursday except for December and summer...keep safe and hopefully groups will be able to start sewing again!

Tied Quilts are a lost art these days. I do prefer them for puffy batting vs the very flat batting these days. Like many quilters, I tie a lot of charity and fast baby quilts/comforters.
