This vertical shooter from Toaplan features some top-notch visuals for the time, and the gameplay is fast, bordering in frenetic at times.
As is typical with games of this type, you can upgrade your weapons and collect smart bombs which help get you out of sticky situations. However, you need to choose your armaments carefully because certain weapons lock your aim to front firing only, but generally have a decent spread of projectiles, while others allow you to move and aim in all directions, but you need to be more precise. You'll want to pick the weapon which best suits the environment - the auto-laser is much more effective in confined spaces and tight corridors than the spread-shot.
Over all, Out Zone is a tough but compelling shooter, and is worth checking out.

30 years ago I was held the highest score and was declared the 'Outzone champion' 😂
I beat the game with one token 6 times and set the record for years.
We had the perfect childhood
I beat it the same thing , 6 times brother . It took me almost 6 hours
better times. now it seems there's a complete absence of fun in place of competition, with esports.
You are amazing. Brings back so many great memories. Best vertical scroller of all time.

Damn sir, I have been trying to figure out what game this was since I played it back in the arcade decades ago. Huge thanks to you (again). What a hidden gem - I think this wouldn't have been portable till more recently with the slowdown it would have caused.

Well interestingly this ran on the same arcade hardware as Truxton, Fire Shark, Hellfire and Zero Wing, all of which were ported to the mega drive/Genesis
Loved this game in the arcade. The colors popped so much, especially the laser shots, that I thought at the time it must be using some unique new display technology.
holy crap, I remember seeing this game on arcade as a kid but I never got to play it and now it randomely showed up on my feed, thank you kind person for uploading this or else I would have never found it again!
a few years ago it finally got a home port on the sega astrocity v mini arcade. too bad FixEight wasn't included but it's still awesome to have Out Zone officially at home without needing a PCB. I think these sort of products focused on scrolling shooters are worth buying to show game manufacturers that people want to buy these scrollingshooters. the US version has seemingly corrected all the lag complaints people had on the Japanese version of the Astroctiy Mini V.

A great game, programmed under OS/9 for X68000 and made on the Sharp X68000 with the help of the Toaplan TED editor by Toaplan guys.

With super ball , don’t keep the fire button pressed.
If You keep pressing the fire button then a ball will shoot forward as well as the ball that is spinning around.
I used to play this in my youth so I know what I’m talking about
Exactly right, that ball that went flying forward had way more power than the rotating one, flame thrower had the most but no range
He also missed many score hidden places
I really liked the character design.
There is a resemblance between this game’s protagonist and CATS, one of gaming’s greatest villains, from Zero Wing, also by Toaplan.
How cool would it be if both games, and more Toaplan games, were in the same universe?
When i played this as kid iwould never give up the superball. If you button mash the superball shoots a ball foreward.
It's like Time Soldiers and Ikari Warriors 2 had a baby.
