When I arrived in a Russian village in the Arkhangelsk region, I realized that if there was an apocalypse in big cities from the disconnection of electricity, then these guys (residents) would always survive! They have their own cattle, their own poultry, eggs, milk, potatoes, and so on!
Interestingly enough, that exact thought came across my mind when I was visiting this village where Lars lives. It certainly lacks city comforts and it’s very unlikely I would want to move to the countryside anytime soon, but their survival skills are something else
Russia is big enough and widespread in so many ways that it can be treated as an independent country. It can be expected to make its own alliances. Doing that by force however, is not an option while it is so close to the European Union.

I'd add to that, most people in Russia are like people in the rest of the world, not only the outskirts xD We have our geniouses and businessmen, and we got our fools and crying babies.

This is exactly the sort of report I've been hoping for. My neighbors are foresters and small farmers, backyard mechanics, jack-of-all-trades. Money is always tight but their "make do" attitude usually carries the day. Our weather isn't as brutal but I see so many similarities. It would be great if you could do more reports like this, in even more depth. I get the impression that newcomers aren't that welcome -- around here, people tend to be a bit reserved but friendly to strangers. Then again, NW Washington has that reputation. Great job!
I am thinking the same thing about rural Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont -- there are a lot of similarities. Obviously, one huge difference is the opportunity to openly protest the war or complain about the lack of opportunity or things like decent health care. Makes me wonder what would have happened if the powers-that-be in Russia actually built a democracy in the 90's instead of looting the the carcass of the state and letting the Putin mafia take over. Would it be like a western European democracy, or would the rural poor feel isolated and marginalized, leaving them vulnerable to a Putin-type leader, anyway, the way we in the US have failed our own rural and working class people to the point where they can be convinced that Trump is their savior?
@@johnnyrock70 Good points. Listening to the guy making hardware, and the brother farmers, I thought exactly the same thing! If they were here in rural PA, they'd likely be Trump voters, even if it didn't serve their interests. I hate Trump, but I get WHY he appealed to people who really have been left behind. Most of the family farms are owned by some corporation now.
@@ambercrombie789 I was not going to bother replying to your question, as all too often this ends up as nothing more than endless, circular arguments: true MAGA believers are immune to evidence and reason, and life is too short to bother with such obduracy. However, since you asked in a non-confrontational way, I will respect the effort and try to limit this to less than essay length. Trump is a liar beyond even the routine definitions applied to pathology. It does not matter even when he is confronted with multiple sources documenting his lies, he will respond with MORE lies. Multiple fact-checking sources documented more than 30,000 lies over four years. The "what-about-ism" response is usually something like "all politicians lie": true enough, but his lack of shame reveals a profound lack of respect for "HIS" people, in addition to his disregard of law. Trump is disloyal, to "friends" (rather what he momentarily calls people who parrot whatever toxic nonsense he wants to amplify), family (he squandered millions in inheritance, and stole money from family: see Mary Trump.), and most important-to the nation he took an oath to serve and protect. Trump is profoundly inept: as impresario of a gambling casino, where customers freely give money with NO expectation of return, HE LOST MONEY. Trump's knowledge of history, economics, foreign affairs, military affairs, so woefully deficient and defiant of correction, reveals he either has a life-long learning disability, or is simply too stupid to care. He should never have been allowed to run for any office, and we can blame his enablers and that insane cadre of voters for sustaining this toxic liar and thief. I'm done.

What's interesting to me is that rural people from Russia feel very similar to rural people in the US. I think we have much more in common with them than we do with people in our cities. Really impressed with their spirit of self reliance. Most governments tend to have crappy leadership, but it's not always a true reflection of its people. Wishing for peace in Russia/Ukraine.

Thank you very much for this insight in a rural Russian community. The feedback to the sanctions did not surprise me. Rural regions do not profite that much from economic booms but on the other hand do not suffer that much from setbacks either. Thats because they are much more self sustaining as your report pointed out quite nicely.
How sad, then, that these people who do not ask to be so beholden to the outside world, will be asked to now send their sons to a faraway war that they have no interest in participating in.
@@HughCorbyCruick Faraway war? It's being waged next door, in Ukraine. The West started the war with a 2014 coup organized by the US State Department/George Soros, then installed their puppet. Well Russia is doing pretty fine although USA sanctioned them. It was a wrong call to sanction Russia first. They should have opened and continued with talks. Rather than just shut Russia like that cuz Russia can survive anytime in fact their economy is strong.
@Lars Hildebrandt well we shall see how Russia can survive. Because many Asian countries already buying huge volumes of oil from Russia including India, china, Iran.. and now so many of Indian goods are also going into Russia bcuz I also do business as well and too many goods going into Russia now so this is opportunity for countries in Asia and like India to go in and boom the market. So I seriously believe Russian can do well and come out stronger than you think and even USA already feeling the inflation right now.

People will always find ways to survive .... basic needs will always be met, especially in a country like Russia with a lot of energy reserves and natural resources. Here in the Netherlands a 1L bottle of Italian olive oil is €5, €10 if it's a advertising brand, like Bertolli. It used to be €3 and €6..... before the war. So it has gone up, but it's still affordable if you buy the house brand
I found it to be similar in Donegal (Ireland), people with large gardens and multiple jobs for income, cutting peat for fuel and making their own drink (poitin).
Interesting video. It seems a lot like living in a small low income town here in the US. Even the last part where Lars says "the government might be shit but it's ours". That sounded exactly like something I would hear around town if we were in their situation. People are people and the similarities show it.

I visited the old USSR in 1988. Besides spending time in Moscow and Leningrad, I took the Trans-Siberian Railroad all the way to Irkutsk, so undoubtedly passed the station the author here left the train at. Back then, there were no supermarkets. In fact except for foreign currency stores, there was almost nothing to buy in the whole country. Even the foreign currency stores had maybe 5% as many goods, even in Moscow, as the supermarket shown in the video. It was impossible to get a good cup of coffee or a iced soft drink in the height of summer. They didn't exist. Food, even on our relatively upscale tour, was generally horrible unless you liked smoked cod and beets.. To see how things have changed over the last 35 years in Russia is why there won't be any uprising against Putin. However, if you bothered to ask the average Russian if they feel a change in their government is for the West to decide...they would react rather defensively. As for becoming the next North Korea...this I highly doubt. One only needs to look at a map to quickly understand the scope and breadth of Russia's resources to weather these sanctions. Rather, we should all be concerned that these economic sanctions have only served to polarize the BRICS nations against the Western economic block. They are trading amongst themselves, now. This will only serve to accelerate the decline of the USD as a global currency reserve. Fundamentally, this move does not bode well for the average American, as a net importer of goods. IMHO.
Thank you for a very interesting and educational video. The Russian people are not the cause of the problems, yet it is they who are hurt by it. Best wishes for your continued success. A final thought: One of the early clips in your video shows a woman shopkeeper adding up a customer's purchase using an abacus. When I was a kid 70 years ago, they taught us how to use one in grammar school! There were no calculators back then. An adding machine was big, clunky and expensive. At least the abacus will still work if the power goes out!!!

I don’t understand some bloggers who recalculate the cost of Russian goods in dollars or euros, because our salary is in rubles. The cost of diesel fuel, for example, in January 2022 in my region was about 55 rubles per liter, now in August the same amount. But in January, the dollar exchange rate was 77 rubles per dollar, now it's 57, and wages have not decreased. And now, based on the exchange rate, you conclude that fuel has risen in price by 27%. The same goes for food..! This is some nonsense!
We have a lot of price inflation in Canada, everything is much higher, spare parts are hard to get and more expensive as well. There are no new cars in the car lots, only used ones.
I also live in Canada and it seems the situation is effecting us here more than the people in Russia . Food prices , gasoline , lumber all have been inflated . Any reason is a good reason to price gouge and rip off the common people .
@@RealReporter US (northern) is the same, gas up $2+, material up 300 to 3,000% pending on product, food wasn't a terrible hike. It's not surprising that gas prices have not gone up - they produce vast quantities of the stuff so can subsidise the home market as they want. But remember US wages are several times those in Russia, so the cost as a % of wages is still higher in Russia than the US. Did the locals support Putin? Agree with the war?
Mainly, most of gas price in Russia is the taxes and excise. The expenses of manufacturers are insignificant in the final price on gas stations. So even the increases in transportation and production costs cannot be significantly reflected in the price. It actually just follows inflation. Well, locals can agree with war, or can disagree, nothing will change. But most of them do not consider this as war with ukrainians as it shown on your media. For them this is war with bloody regime, governors established by NATO, not with ukrainian people. Don't forget, there are 2 millions of refugees from Ukraine in Russia for now.
gas and diesel are not subsidised in Russia. It is quite opposite - 70% of the price at the pump are different taxes, starting with oil mining tax, ecological tax, drilling tax etc and and many other different big taxes companies pay to make a gasoline out of oil and its transportation. Price at the pump also includes 20% selling tax.
Although some prices of product on special sales can be lower from time to time, the regular price for a 1L bottle of extra virgin olive oil here in North America is similar to the one you showed in your video. The whole world is facing the same Inflationary prices, which has more to do with a decade of bad central bank monetary policy, but politicians around the world are all the same: they like to make excuses so they don't get blamed and have to be accountable for their own bad decisions, so they point their fingers at others and try to deflect the blame overseas.
Joshua , one liter bottle of olive oil is some in Russia as in North America but the wages in North America are much higher.Average monthly income in Russia is 700.00 .In The US , minimum wage earners are paid more than that per week.
@@matildesantos4215 The differences in income is a fair point in the context of product affordability, standard of living, and cost of living comparison, but is also a separate issue to the point made in the video. Olive oil is not a product produced in Russia (please correct me if I'm wrong), but rather an import, usually from Europe, but sometimes also from the Middle East or North Africa. The price of olive oil is often set by industry cooperatives based on both price floors and industry demand by both domestic and foreign buyers, so regardless of the country we come from, we're all competing for the same supply, driving the price. The point I was making is that despite sanctions, the price of that imported product is comparable and on par with what we pay in North America, and the increase in its price has been due to the global inflation we're all experiencing together at the same time, albeit perhaps not to the same extent, which was caused by global Central Banks' coordinated Quantitative Easing (QE) policy, and not due to sanctions.
@@matildesantos4215 Wages are higher, but taxes are higher too. Plus free education and healthcare. And yes, olive oil is not cheap, it's imported since olives don't grow in Russia. We use sunflower oil mostly, and it's 2-3 times cheaper, about 100-130 rubles per liter ($2)
Every time Zelensky comes close to a peace talk, Boris Johnson flies to Kyiv to say no...no peace talks....keep fighting. What kind of leader are both of them? Willing to sacrifice the lives of Ukrainians to bolster the West's power hungry climate lords and for Zelensky to bolster his wallet.
In light of Russia's war crimes against civilian men, women, children & elderly...I don't see that happening. Fresh mass graves are discovered in Ukraine far too frequently. Russia needs to leave immediately.
@@djholliday5132 Yeah, that's what concerns me. It concerns me that the absolute best case scenario is that the Ukrainians win their sovereignty/independence and it kicks of decades of animosity. Putin calling the whole thing off would be a better scenario for everyone except Putin, but since there's about zero chance that will happen, I can't consider it as the "best case" scenario.
Amicable end soon? Are you living in a fairytale "disney" world. It's 70.000+ casualties on the Ruzzian part alone, not counting the civilian casualties and Ukraines losses. Someone will pay for it...Putin will be disposed of...and if it means "thermonuclear" exchange!
From what is being said in this video, the Russians are in favor of Putin’s behavior and, as Lars’ wife said “fix it themselves” if they want to. Since they’re not fixing, we are to assume they don’t want to fix anything… very sad.
Our prices for everything here in the USA has gone up as well and there are supply shortages too. I went into a small store to get toothpaste yesterday and the shelf was empty but the larger stores have enough.
Most Americans have a very low pain threshold for a lack of products. Not sure what they would do if they had to live under similar conditions as the Russians do.
@@paulheydarian1281 I agree with that and if anyone or any nation ever wants to conquer America all they have to do is figure out a way to disable smart phones to where they can only be used for phone calls and shut down Amazon. Over half of the people under 30 would kill themselves.
@@tomc4139 "He doesn't gouge people at the pumps." Would he if he *could* do that? It isn't up to Joe Biden to gouge people at the pump, or NOT gouge people at the pump.
It is up to him. He can appoint heads of Agencies. Those Agencies decide how easy or difficult it is to extract oil or move oil. Current price relief is due to falls in Chinese demand. Biden's transportation guy is happy to see fuel prices rise because it "increases the value of electric cars" "for those who have access to them." So literally they are pursuing policies which make life more difficult for the rest of us in order to drive electric vehicle sales to drive up the values of their stock investments.

A fascinating report thankyou. It would be great if a report was made for the American audience as of the prices in the EU and UK where the sanctions have had the most profound effect. For example, diesel here in the UK is around $9 per gallon. I live alone and my weekly shop has gone up by around £30! As for buying spare parts from Germany, well you'll be lucky if there are any spare parts after this winter because industry there will all but stop due to the lack of energy. History tells us that Russia is a highly resilient country to hardships. It has all the primary commodities to run self sufficiently, as does the US who will also likely ride out this currant storm. For those of us in the UK and EU, we will pay dearly for the catastrophic mistakes made by generations of inept governments. And for those that wish for regime change in Russia, i would suggest a word of caution, what makes you think the next leader will be better? Many Russian politicians believe Putin is too moderate! Better the devil you know.
Hey, Nathan! Good to have you here and thanks for comment. It’s always interesting to learn about what life’s really like from a local perspective. Appreciate it 👍
I'm British and believe that NATO is the aggressor and the sanctions are directed at US with the goal of impoverishing the west in preparation for the WEF takeover. This war isn't going to end anytime soon. Do not believe the MSM.
Don't be so gloomy about your energy, you will be fine. Some people might suffer a bit this winter I don;t want to downplay that, but your economy will survive. And part of the price bumps are from the brexit , which made traded with the EU more expensive. Petrol prices are going down already, here in the Netherlands it's only 10% up since the war started (peak was 30% up) Note we have a high tax so our price is always high that's why the increase might look low on paper
You are right, most of Russians remember in what kind of misery they lived under pro-western Yeltsin. Putin literally lifted Russia out of mud, slowly but surely. Level of poverty during Yeltsin rule was unimaginable.

Money is always tight but their "make do" attitude usually carries the day. Our weather isn't as brutal but I see so many similarities. It would be great if you could do more reports like this, in even more depth.
I'm done.

I enjoyed your video, it just anger's me how the hell the west has a cheek to put sanctions on Russia, have they forgotten about the illegal war they've been involved in, you know so called weapons of mass destruction, bull shit wars in Afghanistan, Syria, ect you could go on. I'm from England but I don't buy into the propaganda, for me it's a war by design to increase the cost of living to pay for money lost during there ridiculous lock downs. I'm glad to here that most Russians won't turn on there own government don't sing to the tune of western politicians. They try and brainwash us to hate each other, turn everyday people into enemies and I for one will not be fooled, I have know problem with Russian people only greedy government's who in this day and age still want to rule the world, the western politicians are know different than Russian politicians, all out to line there own pockets.

I do wonder if in the long run sanctions don't have the opposite effect than intended for the people. Instead of breeding discontent, they foster an us versus the world attitude making people who might not have been supportive of the war become supportive. Or, they at least support their government in a time of national stress.

But in January, the dollar exchange rate was 77 rubles per dollar, now it's 57, and wages have not decreased. And now, based on the exchange rate, you conclude that fuel has risen in price by 27%. Feel free to move to Russia, cheap gas, low wages. Have fun.
We grew up in 90s where we had nothing to eat and no money. So we will survive without Italian olive oil
You understand that if we point back it's no different right?
Wages in the US are more than five times those in Russia
May this conflict come to an amicable end soon.

Prices for everything in the US went up before the Ukraine conflict, it just added to it
@@paulheydarian1281 I agree with that and if anyone or any nation ever wants to conquer America all they have to do is figure out a way to disable smart phones to where they can only be used for phone calls and shut down Amazon. Over half of the people under 30 would kill themselves.

@@tomc4139 "He doesn't gouge people at the pumps."
Would he if he *could* do that?
