THanks for that, I assumed so (and imagine being on TV - Letterman no less, scary..) I purchased this on cassette at the time (in my 30s by then and with no realiable guides for '90s ROCK - hit and miss for awhile there). I only play it when I think of it or see it. She's great. She's smart, she's honest, and she ROCKS - and I see she's still around and quite active! ~
@@DannyJMaloney Vocals are shaky at first, gets way better second verse and she settles in. Every musician has had experiences like that. Still a rad performance from a national treasure.
I discovered this 90's tune earlier this year while I was trying to relocate another 90's song "You’re Still The One" on the Internet, and I'm very glad that I did! :D
i don't think it was a bad performance. i love the noise addict tshirt the guitar player was wearing. i used to love that band. and she sang on ben lee's debut. i loved that song. 1995 was a good year.
One of the greatest rhythm guitarist of all time. Her book " horror stories" is brilliant! You get a true understanding of what is banging around in her psyche.
At the time of this recording, Liz had notorious bouts of stage fright. You can see it here... she doesn't come on stage till she is announced, and you can see her trying to look anywhere but the audience. But, I'm sure you could do better on television in front of a studio audience as well... right?
Hey THAT's my guitar!! :-) I proudly own my Dad's '65 Fender Musicmaster II !!! :) I LOVE that old guitar... and mine is just like that.. red, with the mo-of-pearl pick guard!! And hey, that's a strat neck there!! :-)
I was lucky enough to play in public a couple of times, sometimes with 200 to 300 people... and really, I felt like my body was doing one thing and my mind was doing another... It's hard to have control, despite the rehearsals... When I watched this video I remembered that a little... But she handles herself a thousand times better and there is too much talent, even in 2024 I still listen to her... Like
She definitely does not suck on guitar. And her vocals are fine -she’s more talented than any human that will ever make a comment on her videos - times a million.
Voice is shaking as much as any human has ever done, no big deal. It's a very hard key for anyone, rarely do you have vocal notes that low. Its nervousness but also sometimes our voices just dont work as well as we hope on any given moment. It's the part difficulty plus the nervousness and possibly just an unfortunate voice moment most singers face, not all, but most.
I still have a crush on this goddess nearly 30 years after I first listened to Exile in Guyville and Whip-Smart in fricken H.S. when my voice was cracking and I was literally vertically and emotionally challenged.... Her genius words and whimsical melodies legit got me through those tough times...hard to believe it's really been that long ago. She seemed so in touch with her feminine self, which at the time and still to this day so completely irresistible to me. Such a true Lady ❤️🩹🫶
She's always had a lot of stage fright; back when this album was first out she was probably completely terrified to be on Letterman. Wonder if that's what the look on her face is.
@robram818 Liz Phair didn't come into her own as a studio singer until Whitechocolatespaceegg...four years after Whip-Smart. On record, it's like two utterly different singers. Could also be the choice of producers -- Whip-Smart producer Brad Wood (Veruca Salt) is known for his raw, seemingly artless sound, while Whiteschocolatespaceegg producer Scott Litt (R.E.M.) is very polished and smooth.
Thanks for the "artless" comment, but take a look at the credits on WCSE & you'll see my name listed as producer on 5 of the songs including all of the singles
Man. What a killer song, and album, too. I wish I could go back to 1994, when this album came out, and be 15 years old all over again. I still remember buying this album back in 1994, or 1995, after hearing this song on the radio, and seeing the video back then on MTV (back when the M in their name actually meant something, and they still actually had something to do with Music). Such a fun time back then, and a time of great f**king music, too. Where's Doc, and that d**n DeLorean at? I wanna "go back" so badly! Not even joking, either. 😃
@@nudnick No , I can tell it’s live but I think they used a taped backing track for the backing vocals. Would have been better to use the woman and dudes in Paul’s band.
@@spaceengineer1452 The dudes in Paul's band are the ones doing the backing vocals. Why would bass player Will Lee, who always does backing vocals when artists perform on the show, be standing in front of a microphone the entire song, but not be playing bass? Figure it out.
Maybe I'm hard of hearing or fucking tone deaf, but this wasn't half as bad as people are making it out to be. Sure, a few parts are off (I contribute that to nerves) but most of this is on par in my opinion.
No.I've heard a lot of her live, and she's often off-key (verses the studio versions). I think her problem is that she can't hear herself well enough (because CLEARLY she CAN sing!).
"Liz, nice to see you again, how are you? You need a lawyer?" Probably an inside joke having to do with getting rid of the f-bomb for this performance and she laughed.
@Thomas Headley Well, I'm in Canada, so I get to listen to Justin Bieber singing "Fuck Yourself" while shopping for my groceries. Not really what I want to hear. If you enjoy the swearing so much, buy the album. Don't need it while I'm thumping my watermelons.

Exactly. There are many great singers who don't have pretty voices. BTW, Aguilera did a great collaboration with jazz pianist Herbie Hancock that surprised me.
Dude that song is magical mabye because I heard it tripping balls on an MTV 120 minutes trip with rancid salvation right right behind it...anyways she's fun beautiful and crazy sexy...what stage fright
I saw her live in a small venue once, she was awesome. I get the nervousness. Or anxiety. I play great until I hit the record button, and then I'm concious. Hey wait, that might be a great song lyric.
Liz is great as well as orginal. Its hard to see how she can play a Fender Mustang. It not because of the money. Never have seen live but would love to.
100 years later, I’m still in love.
man i miss this era of music
she's so cool. Her voice is distinctive and cool
The early days when Liz was still struggling with major stage fright, before she realized she was a supergoddess and had nothing to fear :)

this is my favorite song by her period, i LOVE this song.
Not as good as Bollywood from Funstyle.
It was tailored to be a radio friendly single by the record label.
One of the best guitar riffs of the era.

this is why we love her.
The contrast between her petite good girl looks and her guitar playing and lyrics 🤣 love it!
"Good girl"? She's a foul mouthed trollop.
This was a great performance! Rock and roll and a great song!
Liz Phair is a Supernova!
I remember an interview she did with Kennedy on MTV, and she said she puked right before this performance.
This is a good contrast to the studio/radio version. Studio was very well polished and this has a much more raw feel since it's live.

This girl, is Amazing💙
I just watched her on Seth Meyers, that's what brought me here.
I found her through the Dirty Girls documentary which used a great
Song that fit the film perfectly (Batmobile).
I love when she smiles as she's about to (not) say fuck on TV.
