years ago, i was fortunate enough to get hands on with an Ootachi. Kept in a private collection, by an Indian businessman in the UK (who also trained Japanese sword arts). The blade itself was about 9/10ft. But was actually 'wieldable', as it had surprising good balance (with the fittings on). Heavy, but light considering the size. There were some indications on the handle/fittings as to how it had been primarily used (on horse back). By lodging the sword between the rider and the saddle. Then, with the blade sticking out the side, the rider would gallop pasts troops. Anyone/thing caught in the blades space, paid a price.
I now really want a replica of the Haja-No Ootachi Sword now. It's not just a sword, it's a masterpiece of Swordsmanship and forgery of fire... some say these Swords were gifted to these warrior by the ancient gods themselves, and gifting them ultimate strength along with knowledge of how to properly use them with expertise.
All kind of super long weapons used on horse riding usually. But today all of people misunderstand using on ground Such as 8 Diagram staff form came from Chinese Kung Fu that was modified version of Yeung's family Spear. That can practice on ground and on horse riding with using. People need to think the reason of design of weapons with technique. Never play a traditional stubborn
You’re right, historical facts often include legends, so it’s important to discern accurate information. Thank you for your comment. I will use it to improve my video creation.
Well, I do know why they were called "Ootachi". Based on the length of the Sword itself. • Nodachi - 6 to 7 feet • Odachi - 7- 8.9 feet • Ootachi - 9 to 12 feet There you go!
wow so the enormous cartoon swords didn't come from drug induced dreams and i thought 🙂they seemed physically impossible to use now you should cover the overlooked battle sword...the microtachi, smaller than a pocketknife, when unsheathed the enemy would gather around and be smitten by its cuteness 😀
Just a quick information. It seems that some units of measurement, not known to the civilised world, was used in this video. That makes a lot of the information provided utterly meaningless, except of course for those unlucky enough to understand it’s meaning. As approximately 98% of the world’s population does have some connection to civilisation, I recommend that you use those units instead.
@@HistoryofKatanayeah, it's too awkward for a normal human sized individual. plus, on the battlefield, use of spears and archers would quickly kill normal-sized individuals using these. so that might be the offshoot theory where these were made for larger sized people.

Thank you for your informative comment! That is very interesting, and I wish I could have been there too. I look forward to your continued support.

53lbs is too heavy to be useful to any man in battle. 165 lbs sword is suitable for legendary giants.
It was made to slaughter cows for meat
The evidence is overwhelming yet they still deny
Thank you for your comment!
50lbs is really light tho wdym
With proper training and great power of will that I'm sure Japanese Samurai warriors have, use of these monster katanas is possible 😊
So Toshiro Mifune's long sword in The Seven Samurai was an actual thing?! How cool!
Thank you for your comment!
持ち手の部分だけでなく刀身の根本に布を巻いて大きく持ち振り回している絵巻を見た。
根本も持てるように手が斬れないように布を巻いて振り回せるようにしてるんだよね

Japan: "tamahagane is very hard to produce so there is a limit to the number of swords made every year."
Also Japan:
Very interesting and informative thank you 😊
I’m happy to hear that. Look forward to more videos coming soon!
I know I'm late but this channel makes me happy, thank you. Could you cover the Nagamaki soon?
Thank you for your comment! I'll consider making a video about Nagamaki as well.
Thank you for such detailed introduction of ootachi!
Thank you very much for your comment. It truly makes me happy to receive such comments!
We need movies with blades like these!
Thank you for your comment!
Good movies
Thank you so much for this video. Now for the rest of your content 😮😮😮
Thank you for your comment! I'm glad to hear that. Please continue to watch my videos as I will keep making them.
I have a 36" katana custom made for me. Being 6'5", it doesn't look weird for me.
i have one this length and it feels like it’s just a tachi

Zanbatō never gets any love.
Sword for “ Honda “ the friendly giant !
Am i tripping or is it around the size of a standard longsword?
9:34 is a proper one? It has that blade width for its size?
Real giants
Thank you for your comment! That might be true. I'm also interested in Japanese giant legends.
Put the handle behind your back and wrap your arms around it resting the handle the in V of your elbow and you could swing it
There is no bad tool, only inexperienced user😊
Muy bonita la espada sagrada Ootachi gracias
Called the “Long Touchy” huh? Yeah it seems like it.
It is ōdachi, oh clever one!

@@BlCKuT-nv8gv Do you think Nagamaki's can be as big as 7ft?
This is proof of giants in Japan no human would ever be able to handle such a humongous blade.
The handle is too thick of that last sword, if the handle was thinner, a hand could grasp it. I think it could be used by André the Giant though.
Giants used them. Not humans

Are you referring to a Kogatana? Understood. I would like to make a video about that next time!
Or, there were Giants upon the Earth in those days!😉
Could you please include the length in meters? For those who aren't barbarians.
Metres are the work of the devil I bet you also use Fahrenheit you savage 😂
@@BadlydrawnBen celsius are the one and only
Like they love to tell us barbarians when imperial units aren't used in a video, conversion is just a Google search away...
About 4.5 meters or 15 feet and 80 kgs
Thank you so much.
In Poland we would use the phrase : Okurwa. To describe this sword
New GOT 2 weapon 🙏🏿
The word "天下" should have translated as "(in) the world." I don't think it means "under heaven."

that's shaped like a sword but it's not because no one could even lift it much less use it, has no realistic use
The Japanese are so practical they can be impractical and it doesn’t matter one bit.

I was researching the tachi and odachi swords for a book of mine, when I stumbled upon your video. Excellent work and I love your narration style :D

I am still working on the draft. Hopefully, I can finalize it this year and actually start work, editing, and polishing it.@@HistoryofKatana
or maybe there was just giants in japan a long time ago using these types of swords.
That might be possible. It’s hard to imagine humans handling such large swords!🥶

Maybe there were giants after all!
It's the sword of Honda the giant
It look like someone the bladesmith or daimyo who spend money to make it use supersize sword to flex "look we can make bigger you never have"
I believe there is such an aspect.

Giant swords for Giant people yes Giants Opps the average Japanese was 5.6 tops! Where did I put my tin foil hat cause nobody will believe me lol
Same with the Vikings. There are massive swords and everyone acts like they’re props or something.
