I have just started learning and it's a torture when I am muting strings or not pressing it hard enough. This video by far gives me the biggest hope. So many times I felt like just giving up, with how awful my chords are.
Also thank you for mentioning that we should keep playing even if we are muting the chords. I have been too obsessed with trying to hear the first few chords I learnt which is stopping me from learning new techniques. I will keep going. Thanks
Check out how Luke combs plays the c and g chords . He anchors pinky and ring fingers on b and high e strings and then just uses his middle finger to play 5th string for c and 6th string for g while kind of muting the string right below by laying his finger over it. It’s like a super g and c add 9 minus the 4th string. I even held those anchor fingers for d chord and it sounds fine for beginners. Doing this allowed me to actually play something that sounded like music for the first time. Hope this helps and wasn’t too confusing.
THIS video helped me so much. I'm just starting out on the acoustic and I have the problem with muted strings and all other videos were just promoting their website and saying "just move your palm" "make sute there's space between ur palm and the neck" blah blah yes that's important info but the FINGER PLACEMENT changed everything. So thank you. I want to play like my father and now I'm actually playing efficiently and I'm happy ✨✨✨
I wanted to watch a video that would help me keep my fingers close to the fretboard and avoid muting the guitar strings. and this video helped thank you so much:))
I have big fingers and I thought this is going to be impossible to play a guitar. Your technique for positioning the fingers really helped. I'm finding it a lot easier
This video is awesome. Finger position and hand position and strength needs time to develop. Particularly strength. I’ve only played for a week and notice a little improvement. But one day at a time.
You have really helped me with this and the only regret is not picking your video up before now. I'm actually a frailing banjo player (approx one year from starting) and I do have a very good teacher, but she hasn't actually managed to give me the solid advice on this problem that you have. Superbly explained and demonstrated and I've improved already. I'm much more confident with it now. Thanks so much!
Thank you so much sir. Amongst all the videos I have watched. Your advice helped me a lot. Am so much thankful sir. Keep bringing these beautiful videos.❤❤
I've watched maybe 10 different videos on guitar tips and stuff to try to figure out what was going on, and was legit crying before tapping on your video. My fingers hurt, but my tears are dry :)
Dudes! I've been trying to learn for YEARS but have some questions, so I'm flooding all guitar related tutorial videos. Please tell me: How to know when to up pick/down pick; how to transition between chords; how to remember where the strings are; and the best way to do Barre chords
Wow, that's a lot of questions, ... take baby steps and learn one thing at the time, I have covered it all in my online guitar lessons - www.guitarcouch.com/product/online-guitar-lessons/
Very informative. I have always wondered how Dolly Parton plays guitar with long nails? Some instructors say play with side of finger. I am a beginner. Which is best?
You can also make the angle of the guitar higher to better position the fingers more parallel to the fret boards. Sometimes the those who play with very low guitar angle experience fret muting. Look at how the classical guitarist position the guitar, which you csn also do with acoustics..
I know the proper shape for my fingers to prevent muting the adjacent strings. Sadly because of age I cannot bend that last knuckle to fret vertically. Do you know of a splint system that I can buy to bend those last knuckles in the right shape? I'm struggling after two months.
One problem I have is when I hold a mini-bar on the bottom strings (D, G, B for example) while playing a higher string eg the A string 2 frets further up the neck ..in this case I can’t curl the knuckle while holding the mini-bar …any suggestions?
Thank you for your video is very helpful , im still having problems putting my fingers the right position and I’m keeping muting , i have a question my fingers hurts while trying to accommodate them on the strings, what should I do about it and when you press the strings do you have to press them hard to avoid muting ? I don’t know please help thanks
i'm still trying everything but its not working and i've been playing for 2 years now. I think maybe my nails might be to long or just my fingers are very thin
Well, learned something here but it was not said. I rested the neck of the guitar in my hand's palm. I realized the neck of the guitar is NOT to be held by the hand at all. For me laying in bed trying to learn that it a real problem as I can barely see the fret board if my hand is not holding the guitar neck in place.
Hi Archie Grant. Thanks for watching the video. Can you post a link to a video with a close up of your hand? That way, I can give you some advice. Thanks a lot.
This is impossible i curl my knuckle make sure im playing with the tips holding it up right make sure im not touching any other notes and it still sounds like shit this is rediculous
Thank you so much for watching my lesson. Please check my website www.guitarcouch.com for FREE and ACADEMY MEMBERSHIP guitar lessons.

I'm a complete beginner and was having terrible problems muting strings. :)

Thank you! I'm happy I could help
Yup. Very helpful and incredibly well explained. Great tutor. Thank you for this vid.
Also thank you for mentioning that we should keep playing even if we are muting the chords. I have been too obsessed with trying to hear the first few chords I learnt which is stopping me from learning new techniques. I will keep going. Thanks
Yes, that will force you to improve your chord changes :-)
That is exactly my problem
I just started myself. In the same boat. I want to put my fingers 🤬on a diet 😂

Omg! Thank you so much! I was almost about to give up on my guitar feeling hopeless, but you just saved me from doing that.

Thank you, I'm happy I could help
Perfect video on this. No other teacher talks about it in such detail. Great work :)
Thank you Christian!
Stop staring at the frets. If you're tilting the guitar towards you, it's going to be very difficult to play properly with your fingertips.
well it's kinda of hard to ask this of a beginner since they need to see where their fingers are
@@卩丨尺卂卂-d8u Well, you can also playin front of a mirror to see where your fingers are
I wanted to watch a video that would help me keep my fingers close to the fretboard and avoid muting the guitar strings. and this video helped thank you so much:))
Really helpful - thank you!
Thanks for the tips! Very helpful Kinda hard learning on my own but I'll get there
Thank you :-)

I'm Struggling with A chord, My finger don't fit cuz they are thick I guess. Do you have any tips for thick fingers?
There's no cheating in guitar, it isn't that hard, muting the other strings is the greatest hurdle.
Thnks sir 💓 from india
Thank YOU
Thank you for your video is very helpful , im still having problems putting my fingers the right position and I’m keeping muting , i have a question my fingers hurts while trying to accommodate them on the strings, what should I do about it and when you press the strings do you have to press them hard to avoid muting ? I don’t know please help thanks
It is kind of tricky, you need to press enough to get the sound, but not too hard so your hand stays relaxed. Thanks a lot for watching my lesson!
This doesn't help my hand still touches the fretboard.
So when I play E minor, I'm supposed to press those two strings?
Yes :-)
I think first to trim all nails to short. Thanks for tips.
I've played drums for 30 years, so my hands are sausages. This has helped.
Great, I'm happy I could help :-) btw ... mine are also like that, especially these days :-)
I'm still having muting issues. Is it possible that someone's finger tips can be too wide?
Yes, it is quite possible. You could try guitars with a wider neck, as the space between the strings will be bigger.
i'm still trying everything but its not working and i've been playing for 2 years now. I think maybe my nails might be to long or just my fingers are very thin
Thin fingers would help so i would get to clippin those nails buckaroo

Terry Weaver; He did talk about the positioning of the left hand on the neck of the guitar so as not to mute any strings, at 1:55 and 18:05.
👍
I’m doing everything your saying and it’s just not working and it’s annoying me
Hi Archie Grant.
I'm loosing my shit 😂
If you are fat you cant play the guitar well because the fingers keep muting nearby string
Having short nails makes a big difference.
