  • Back from Japan and I got some new Japanese Box Filter! Today I review 3 different aquarium filters from Japan. This fish tank filter from Japan is very simple but efficient. I find that the box filter from Japan is aesthetically pleasing. The Japanese aquarium filter works great.

CUTE little filter. I figure cc = ml. 1500ml is a proximity a liter and a half, which is less than 1/4 gal. Teeny Tiny filter might come in handy for incubating eggs or for fry in a small container.

Those flat box filters look nice. I'm getting back into the hobby again after a several year break. Always liked the box filter/sponge set-up. Only need enough outlets for a light and air-pump.

Actually Mike, carbon can be recharged by baking it in an oven above 225 F after washing it. It frees up all the pores to be used again.

That betta tank is going to be perfect for taking pic's of your fish. I had a few of those CHINA filters going for I guess over a year now and the cottony filter stuff fell apart. It did a fine job while it lasted. I did the same as you and replaced it with batting.

I love new, foreign gizmos. I just recycled a ton of Chinese internal filters since I only have one 10 gallon tank now. I'm more into 40 and 60 gallons now, less maintenance. Someone would love that tiny glass tank for work. I personally wouldn't keep anything in it for any length of time but it is a great showcase tank for your guppies Mike. Nice video and I enjoyed it. Thanx.

I thought they where unique filters, it would be interesting to compare them against the sponge filters. I use carbon in my aquariums because I dont have and automated water system and so carbon is a good thing.I have long suspected that flushing your tank daily is a good preventative, but for us that dont have that ability carbon is the way to go. Have a great weekend Mike go set up that chase lounge by your ponds and chill!

Dear Michael, I can attest that the activated carbon myth of it releasing everything its consumed back out is nonsense. I have a 450 litre tank with a deep bed substrate, which has been set up for nearly 3 years, layered with activated carbon, gravel, more activated carbon and topped off with more gravel. It sits around 10 inches thick and lays on top of a layer of foam then an undergravel filter. Rather than using air, the outlet of the undergravel filter is connected into the input of an FX6 set up mainly as mechanical filtration before going into a 36 chambers (of wu-tang) overhead trickle filtration filled with many varieties of biohome, other sintered glass media, alfa grog before coming back into the tank. The tank is heavily planted and stocked with everything from snails, shrimp, community fish, Tetra, guppies, rainbows, barbs, dwarf chain loaches to bristlenoses, single pea puffer etc. I never do water changes or gravel vacs, only top ups. The other side of the tank also has a sun sun with a double pre filter, one ehiem and one small cannister pre filter before going through 4 layers of biological filtration in the sun sun.
The tank is more or less self sustainable besides the eheim pre filter which I clean around once every 2 weeks. I clean the sun sun pre filter once every 3 months and FX6 once a year. I feed irregularly, left over fruit and veg, frozen blood worms, cultured brine shrimp, dried pellets and I breed snails on two hang on the side breeder boxes. I find the less I do to the tank, the better, even feeding. I've been away for 2 weeks at a time and still not lost fish or had any issues. I don't know why people keep regurgitate the same nonsense about activated carbon leeching back out what they intake. In my experience having over 40kg of activated carbon in my tank as substrate has helped maintain the eco system which I've created.
