The Tories chose a policy of austerity when every economist worth their salt was telling them to not choose that policy. The Tories also chose austerity during a time when borrowing costs/interests were at all time lows. We're no longer in that situation anymore and borrowing interests eat away at the budget. I think young people can see that Labour hasn't actually done "austerity" since they haven't reduced government spending and, unless I'm mistaken, they plan to borrow their way out of the £22bn black hole which doesn't exactly scream "austerity". Why do the people of this country seem so hellbent on supporting the Tories is my question? 2 minutes of a labour government and they want the ones who caused this mess back.

Especially since they already promised to not raise taxes in an effort to "grow" the economy. I am also sceptical about the ability to raise tax when the UK already taxes a large percentage of GDP. Also, how much tax do you reckon would need to be levied on the top 1% in order to close the £22bn black hole. It's not feasible. 2) This was done to eliminate inefficiencies in the system. Some pensioners were getting Winter fuel payments when they didn't need them, now it is limited to those who "really" need them, which isn't great but does generate more money. 3) This goes back to the first point, but essentially there's only so much the rich can be taxed although in an ideal world all of Europe taxes the rich highly and tax havens don't exist so they can't avoid paying. 4) I don't think it's virtue signalling to point out that the Tories relentlessly pursued the failing economic policy of austerity for over a decade and now we're reaping the punishment for that. Let's not forget there were numerous opportunities to get them out, and each time the country voted against it - this is the result. 5) I don't want right wing politicians, sure. Maybe you don't either and we can agree on that, but I don't believe that to be true of the majority in the UK or the West right now. Europe has just undergone a transformation of right wing governments, America has just elected Trump and Reform UK got a significant number of votes. People DO want a return to the Tories for some reason unknown to me. Obviously, these are primarily based on "social" values, but when "social" values always seem to lead to negative economic results i.e. Brexit, I question how seriously the public takes all these economic issues. Or if they're well versed at all.

Since 1997, Labour (and LibDem!) policies - that they have said and which they have tried to pass when in power - have all been to the right of Thatcher’s actual legislation.
