Many thanks to YOU for making this video. It was necessary. She is a SHOCKINGLY underrated character despite the popularity and acclaim of Steins;Gate. Too many times I've seen her entire existence waved off as "just a plot device" or "moe fanservice", but everything you said is the reality of it. Everything revolves around her and she represents everything in the series--Steins;Gate is a great sci-fi, but Mayuri makes it a great character story as well.
Also, she's the cutest in the world.
I honestly think the only people that say that Mayuri was used just as a plot device for the story are people that wanted to hate S;G as soon as they started it. They see a moe character and as soon as that happens they tell themselves that S;G can't be considered a masterpiece for that fact.
@@yekna459 I've seen lots of people love Steins;Gate but say Mayuri is the worst part of it, and/or that she was useless, or say they couldn't get into it because of her.
@@MozillaFennekin i don't get people like that. Maybe they just can't stand moe characters no matter how well they're written.

I love Mayuri’s character so much. She is not the smartest person in the cast, but she is the one who see the problems of time travel the clearest, because she had already realized that what is important are the memories that we share with the ones we care about. Her conversation with Okabe about everyone forgetting the memories would be sad for the one who remembers and her refusal to change the past when Suzuha killed herself, for they would all forget the good moments they shared, really represents well this ideology. I also like how the show establishes her importance to Okabe without needing to resort to romance. A great character from a masterpiece of a show.
100 percent
Exactly Kurisu and Okabe are a Better fit too. Mayuri is his Childhood friend and she was always that, and unlike other animes she she doesn’t seem to even have a crush on him which works well for the story. This story proves the you can have platonic Childhood Freind’s without the romance.

Mayuri is the glue that holds everything together. I can definitely relate with why Okabe wanted to so desperately save her and make her happy. She has such a significance role in the plot and more so after one has played 0. I just couldn’t bring myself to dislike her, and as the story progresses, this girl just makes me wants to put a smile on her face.

In one of the bad endings in the VN Okabe gets into a very distant timeline where even Mayuri and Itaru forgot him. From a Mayuri perspective this would probably be the worst outcome.
is that the one where he gets with Fayris?
@@phonesjuda7318 Yeah, correct.
Not exactly a "bad" end, but yeah.
@@quplet Well, technically, there are no bad endings. However, despite the fact that all endings are equal, some are more equal then others.

An element you've really mastered in your videos is when to put moments of the anime, be it through dialogue or a more contemplative moment. As your videos tend to speak of the inner workings of a work, it can easily feel distanced and purely on the intellectual side. But your inclusions of clips perfectly make me put the finger on your point and bring back the emotions I've felt while watching the show, making me cry or tear up quite often. Your narration has gotten stronger too, more able of communicating your feelings and yet even more precise in the text. It's been a while that your videos have this quality (they became consistently on that level since your "Haikyuu That one moment" video for me) but I thought I'd write it after all this time having it in the back of my mind. Much love to you and your work.

This was such a good video!
I just have one more thing I wanna add though: The OST "Gate of Steiner".
I feel that this OST perfectly captures the feeling you talked about in the video - of excitement and interest caused by the mystery but at the same time giving off this underlying sense of melancholy and urgency that something precious to us is about to be lost. I think that this OST is such a masterful piece to completely represent what Steins; Gate "feels" like. It perfectly captures that tone, or that atmosphere, Steins; Gate has, which you talked about in the video.
I really, really love your videos! I'm very interested in knowing what shows (it doesn't even have to be just anime) you really love but not enough people know about it or have watched it.
Thanks very much, and I definitely agree! The OST is a great encapsulation of the spirit and tone of the entire story, and GoS in particular does this so well.
What about the VN OST "Skyclad Observer"? For me who played the VN first then watched the anime. I love both OST but i prefer Skyclad Observer more cause of the feels of it especially the last part.
Teared up a little. So emotionally intelligent, love Mayuri so much. 😢
Recently refreshed my knowledge on steins;gate. Time travel is great but the Kurisu, mayuri relationship was amazing. I prefer kurisu, but mayuri is awesome. I came for the timelines, I stayed for the relationships.
Too too rooo!!! Mayuri has to be the best best girl of any anime ever. I have watched a lot of anime but no single character has ever made me say “I want to be like her a little bit more”. She is such a good person. Such a loving, amazing person for a fictional character. And I truly love her kind heart and cheerful heart. I am looking forward to a world full of Mayuris
Mayurii, who is seemingly naive, is the wisest, most loving and understanding out of all the characters.
It's sad that some of the complaints I've heard for this show revolve around the characters. Some people just hate okabe's rambling and mayuri's rather childish personality. While s;g 0 shows the impact of the mad scientist, seeing okabe being a more down to earth person, mayuri didn't get that. People just don't understand how much she contributes to the storyline because her words seem to be somewhat be childish and straightfoward but people forget that those words guided okabe and christina to the right decisions . She's the only one who can speak up the things that no other character can through a seemingly innocent, yet impactful way. Thank you so much for making this video so more people can comprehend the beauty of this show's characters as they deserve it.
Sorry if my choice of words sounds whac I suck at england
Thats what I thought as well, she was the smartest in her own ways, I get she couldnt help in anything tech related but I think people doesnt get how worthy she is just because she sounds childish. She always was true to her emotions and was always aware of the tension of the environment.
Great video, Mayuri is just the best. What the fans underrating her seem to miss is the fact that she is the one thing keeping Okabe *sane* even before the events of the series. Throughout the whole show, Okabe is shown as a man struggling with social situations and showing affection and in this way, Mayuri embodies the polar opposite, constantly patting everyone's heads and showing nothing but vocal support. The important part tho is that while growing up, she must've shown Okabe that he is okay the way he is and we see that in the fact that his protective actions speak volumes in comparison to his awkward words. The more honest, openly caring side of him we get to see only in the second half of the series is something Mayuri has always seen inside him from the very beginning. Every time a new character is introduced to Okabe (or even the first-time viewer!), they see him as this absolute crazy jerk and wonder how someone as sweet as Mayuri chooses to spend her time with him. But in the same way that Okabe took her under his wing of joy through mad-scientist-fantasy on that fateful day at the graveyard, she took his hand and taught him that humans are happier and stronger when they're not alone. A great scene to emphasize their whole arc is their little talk on the roof in ep 12 where Mayuri remarks how happy Okabe seems, considering he "always was so sad" just a few months ago and he is just shocked, probably realizing this himself for the first time - she knows people better than they know themselves.
And the best part about Mayuri (something I wish you, Aleczandxr talked about more!) is that she's not painted as a love-interest for the MC (discounting SG0 here, huge disservice to the character they did there IMO). Their love for each other is purely family-like and accordingly strong. The very moment Mayuri's safety is threatened, Okabe's facade breaks down spectacularly, we see him panicking, screaming, sobbing, showing aggression even. In the wordline where Okabe accepts her loss, guess where he ends up? Deeply depressed, at the graveyard every single day, just like Mayuri when she lost her granny. It's like you said, Mayuri is a sign of everything being alright, at least in Okabe's world. She is the embodiment of innocence, hope and affection in a world overshadowed by vileness, despair and loneliness, a world that Okabe wades through and overcomes when Mayuri slaps him, not because she understands any of the apocalypse-talk that just happened in that moment, but because she saw Okabe abandon a person he cared for and can not allow that. Her Tuturu saved psyches and lives.
The greatest anime of all time... heck, the best thing humanity has ever made.
This is too perfect for us T_T
Agreed.
Absolutely fuck yes.
Hell yea.
eh, it was alright.
I didn't know that people who disliked Mayuri existed, but now I've seen them. They exist, and they're all psychopaths. We must hide from them and stick with the light.
Holy moly, two days from now is my 2 year anniversary of watching Steins;Gate and I plan to rewatch the whole series then. This video came out at an eerily perfect time.
You know whenever the character says the title of the anime you go “woah”. But this anime, it starts out by giving you 10 questions, and make you go “woah” whenever each of the questions is answered. Truly the anime that ties every loose ends
TU TU RU~ must be protected at all costs❤
Mayuri in the second season was the MVP 😭😭😭😭💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞 She's always been actually... She's the one keeping everyone from falling apart 😭💔💔💔
I think the best literary analysis also evokes the same feelings as the work being analysed, and you do that beautifully here. Thanks for the video.
That's very nice of you to say, thank you! You're very welcome.
Steins;gate has been my favorite anime for nearly 5 years now and I remember the feeling of watching it for the first time. I was in love. The show took me through so many different emotional places that I could never not think about it, I ended up binging it in a one day span. It was the greatest first tome watch of anything I’ve ever seen, that being said it’s not only that. The second and third and even fourth time were just as amazing but for a different reason. Since I knew the logic and I knew the events I could just enjoy the anime for the characters, this is where I believe the anime truly shines. The way all of the cast come together and enjoy their time is the reason I love this show. The reason I’ll never forget it and I’ll never have an anime or any piece of media ranked above it is for that fact alone. The reason I loved 0 so much is due to the same fact. Even though kurisu was my favorite female lead through S;G I loved 0 just as much as the first series because every character is just so special to me. I appreciate the effort and time that it took you to make this video especially after 9 years of the first shows release. Thank you for putting everything that matters into words because I know I don’t have that sort of understanding for myself.
The best thing about Mayuri I was impressed with was when she dived into car to save hopeless okabe who wanted to commit suicide and see if anything changes for good. And while dying she says " I was finally useful."

This video hits upon just some of the many reasons why I love Steins;Gate so very much. It stands as my favorite anime of all time, and I imagine it would take nothing less than a miracle for that to change. Until today I didn’t know people doubted her importance to the plot outside of the narrative. She’s the bridge between Okabe and the world, and I love how the anime goes about slowly showing us this. Regardless I must commend you, content creator for this wonderful video. It’s very well put together and I quite enjoyed it.
“Oh no i just wound you don't tell me you're broken” triggers my fight or flight response
this is really well done, thank you for this, really.
I hated how underrated Mayuri is in the steins;gate universe, but to be fair, I didn't really understand her the first time I watched the show, most of her important moments are subtle and are quickly overshadowed by a transition into another scene, or something suddenly occurs that doesn't give me enough time to think about her moment. Imo, her character is the most complex in the series, and it is damn well done. I recommend listening to her character song to anyone who is still doubtful about her character traits, it's heartbreaking (it's called "Gentle evening" or "Yasashii yuugure").
9:55 Who we kidding, Mayuri can throw shade with the best of them
this video was recommended to me after i had just finished steins;gate and im looking forward to watching your other videos!

idk why, but everytime I see this background, these strange lights and characters I have a deeply sad feeling in my heart, I couldnt express enough how much I love this series
She is so wonderfully endearing and her blind innocence was instantly refreshing to me from the moment she was introduced, a show like this needs a character like her. I could never remove her from my MAL top ten... she's just the sweetest. Thank you once again Alec, yet a new addition to my many favourites of yours

YOur Description reminds me of Nia from Gurren Lagann. Haven’t finished it yet but I will be this weekend
I love that you put into words my exact thoughts on why this show is so thought provoking. This idea of being isolated among all of your friends. And I love the way that even though the story changed, this was the same theme across not only the two seasons but also the movie. Where it was now red head girls turn to experience the same isolation okabe had to endure by being the only one to see the truth. It’s the isolation of knowledge.
I watch your videos for consistent good content and it betrays my trust when you surprise me with Dubbed clips
If it bothers you enough to say things like this on videos that I put tons of work and heart into, then maybe you don't actually like the channel. I certainly wouldn't do that to a creator I liked.

bad joke” I understand why you put it in the video over sub so we don’t have to read I was just kidding
Hearing the dub for the first time....
It’s just not the same...
Lovely video which perfectly captures Mayuri's role, but I do feel the need at this point to mention how the ending's message and themes at least are defined by Kurisu's world view most of all. After all, it's her who believes that we're all connected in some intangible way and that, as long as at least one person remembers something, it is not meaningless. Mayuri's views define Okabe's realization of how lonely time travel can be and what really matters, but it is Kurisu's romantic heart that allows him to realize that his lived experiences were not for nothing, that love transcends time itself, that he can still reforge those bonds, that there are people who will believe him - which Kurisu does through various timelines, including the S;G one, allowing them to reconnect. Notably, the attractor field where Kurisu dies is just as fucked as the one Mayuri dies in, kind of cementing that both of them are necessary for a bright future to exist. So while I'd agree that Mayuri is central to the story, I do think the optimistic ending and message finds its origin in Kurisu's character - as is appropriate, considering it is *her* true ending in the visual novel.
To be clear, nothing in the video was meant to dismiss anything about Kurisu - it doesn’t do so in text or subtext. Of course - she’s essential to the story as well and I’ve gushed about her to a large degree in the past.
rewatching the anime after almost a decade, and somehow it still feels as if it's something new and endearing, it only proves that Steins;Gate is a timeless classic.
i am glad that YOU ARE BACK
Her innocent charm gives reason to why Okabe has to work damn hard in order to save her.
I would love to see a second video on Mayuri but focusing on her role during Steins Gate Zero. Because I liked her by watching the original anime according to your video, but what made me love her character so much was her development during Steins Gate Zero. I really love the fact that she is so important for the story, the relationship between every character. She is one of the most clever character I have ever seen. Thank you for your video.
You’re very welcome and I’m glad you enjoyed it! I won’t be covering anything about S;G 0 in a video (sorry!), but I’m happy that you found this one valuable.
Mayuri's voice somehow sounds so much sadder in English
It fits in a way...
She still sounds cutesy, but there is a backdrop of melancholy. It fits her extremely well and how well it relates to the main messages of the show/visual novel.
I just love kurisu, mayuri, okabe and all of the characters so much

Man, I miss Steins;Gate... It gave me this weird feeling of something familiar yet something unknown. I agree with your video, Mayuri really tied everyone together. It was even showed in SG0.
It’s great to hear you talk about steins gate, I hope you talk about it more, there are so many aspects I feel like don’t get analyzed enough and your style of analyzing these things is great, Okabe’s entire character arc, the plot twist at the end of how to reach steins gate, and that entire scene are both phenomenal and not talked about enough, kurisu’s importance to okabe’s psyche in the story (which is even more important if you play phenogram and find out what she sacrificed for him)most people think of her as just best girl and don’t realize her importance
Well this is the third video I’ve made about it, and I don’t plan to change my approach to S;G videos too drastically, so what that basically means is don’t expect much more. I may make another one in the distant future, but I don’t have plans for it. Sorry about that, but hopefully that’s understandable.

Cheers pal! Glad you enjoyed.
And the opening is an absolute banger
Seeing Okabe go through so much trauma and struggle to save Mayuri, a precious character who is so positive, energetic, and caring about everyone, is such a deep, emotional, and intense story. I was rooting for Okabe to go and protect the people he loves and cares for, no matter how many times he fails. In a way, he is like Subaru (who wishes to protect Emilia no matter how many times he dies, carrying that pain) and Kirito (where he swore to protect other people in SAO despite his own failures/trauma while becoming more compassionate and stronger as a character when he was trapped in Aincrad, and found that the power of relationships is powerful despite being in a virtual world.)
A really great read about Mayuri's character. During the Steins;Gate's vision I also concetrated on the conversation between Okabe and Mayuri about the loss of memories' sadness and I really appreciated finding my reasonings on this video.
I hope I didn't make too many grammatical errors, a greeting from Italy

I came back to this video because I was trying to use that line of Mayuri's, "for me, silly" as a comparison for the tragedy that happened in a certain big movie that came out recently. If you know, you know. Everyone I talked to seemed to miss the point, the decision not to remind friends of the forgotten memories and bear that weight yourself with the full knowledge of what that meant, that is truly selfless.

Thank you for sharing your passion with all of us, it make me feel like there are others out there that feel the same as I do about anime as a whole.
Glad you enjoyed the video so much, and you're very welcome! I've made two other videos on Steins;Gate so you may be interested in checking those out!
So true. Mayuri was such an essential part of the overarching story of Steins;Gate and its theming. It's insane that a lot of viewers don't always see the same importance in the character, which is a shame to me, since Mayuri was the quintessential voice of intuition in a world of scientific fact. A world that wanted to create progress without considering the cost or the outcome (an outcome that was mentally and societally disastrous, it turns out).
And she knew that, somehow. She valued the time with the group over the scientific progress, and in all actuality, that was what the lab was founded on. And she ended up being instrumental in getting everyone back to that timeline.
Man, appreciate it. You actually described what an ideal story should be... 🥰 Thanks buddy
Also, big fan of Steins gate
Glad you liked it!
Beautiful video over one of the best sci-fi stories out there, i'd say more but Mozilla Fenniken has said more than enough.
Thank you for your continued content creation, your video essays are among the best on this platform.
That's incredibly high praise, thank you Nikolas!
Mayuri is the one of the most endearing characters i’ve watched.. and the fact that the story revolves around okabe trying to save mayuri from dying, the writer knew what they were doing..
Rare to see a steins;gate video that isnt during those years. Its one of the best anime yet forgotten.
Mayushii's voice soothes my soul.
Unless she comments on how her watch stopped working...
After watching this series three times now, I definitely appreciate what this video is trying to convey, thank you for doing one of my favorite girls justice! Excellent videos as always!
My favorite Steins Gate character
That’s crazy I just finished Steins; Gate 😂😂
It is the will of Steins Gate...
Even the 0?
The fact that you took a clip from the dub of a series and not the sub is something I really value. I'm glad an anime youtuber finds something in the dub's voice work. Thanks Aleczandxr!
People like to crap on the dub for the "cake is a lie" line and such, but the more intense moments have Okabe and Kurisu's VAs perform phenomenally.
I don't know how I didn't watch this sooner.
This was emotional, and just beautiful. Thank you
You’re very welcome!
Best Girl, probably my favorite video of yours now.
I could listen to you talk about Steins;gate all day 🙏
