This tribute by President Obama to Admiral William McRaven was shown at the 2019 William J. Donovan Award® Dinner in Washington, D.C., on October 26, 2013.
Ahh.... what a man. What a President. What a wonderful speech. The Admiral deserves it for sure. What a contrast. I came to this video after seeing Donald Trump pathetically lashing out at Admiral McRaven because he couldn't handle McRaven being critical of him. It's really sad that Trump has to strike out at those who challenge him instead of altering his behaviour to do a better job. In not allowing himself to improve and grow, he does himself a great disservice.
Big man, the history of humankind can never be complete without your pivotal role you played to tame the monster. Your name has a special place in the deepest parts of our hearts. Well done.
the tape measure refers to the Bin Laden raid......after the raid and the body of Bin Laden was brought back to the USA base they still were not 100% sure is was UBLaden....they put Bin Ladens body on the ground stretched out and McRaven asked a tall Seal who was 6'2" to lay next to BinLaden who was reportedly 6'4" ..The Seal was just a bit shorter which helped confirm UBLs identity.....Back in the United States Obama presented McRaven with a tape measure saying...."during the raid you blew up a $60 million helicopter but back at base you didn't have a $10 tape measure so here's one"........great sense of humour......if you already knew the story I apologise.
That is one of the greatest shows of respect. I absolutely do not care what was written for him!! To this day i believe that man wrote all of his speeches himself..lol. to throw in the tape measure. What a tribute

Whether we agreed on his policies or not, he carried himself with the dignity and bearing of a president. Our current president does not measure up to the high standards Obama and predecessors set for American leadership. In fact our current leader neither leads nor carries himself with the gravitas required for the job of commander and chief.
