I have been quoting this song on flowers at my mum's resting place since 2005. It sums up my relationship with her, I often sing it in the garden of remembrance where her and my dad's ashes are scattered.
It may not mean very much from some stranger on the internet but I want you to know I read what you wrote about 17 times and couldn't come up with a response that I thought was good enough. Thank you for sharing.
The HollyHobs Beatles Explained it does mean a lot to me, I appreciate that you replied. I shared because it's a beautiful song that means so much to me.
For me, music has power and songs can take me back to memories and feelings. My parents brought us up with music always on somewhere. The Beatles were a very big part of that. Mum bought every album on the first day of release. We were allowed to listen but not touch. Those vinyls are now in safekeeping for my daughter. She asked my dad about them shortly before his death. She knew they were precious. She too loves The Beatles. It's what we listen to most, particularly in the car. She is 16 now, and prefers Beatles to the pop music of today. For her 13th birthday we saw The Bootleg Beatles, for my 40th birthday last year we went to Liverpool, and my daughter wants to spend her 18th I in Liverpool. I suspect her first alcoholic drink will be bought at the cavern.
Wow! I wish that's where I had my first drink lol
The HollyHobs Beatles Explained she has 2 years to wait, but will not let me forget that I need to save for the trip.
My youngest brother had his stag night at the cavern too.
Such an underrated song, and I feel like it's one of Paul's best love songs from the Beatles era.
i sang this song to my love of my life turns out she hates old songs I mean Old songs is better than the new songs
Exactly
Chords borrowed from Dream.. Everley brorhers
Can you make a "Michelle - Explanation"
Paul wrote that for his illegitimate daughter who lived in Paris with her mother.
@@jennifersmall4027 Lmao 😂😂😂
It just reminds me of a daydream really. Just love at it's core without all the complicated emotions and actions that come with it.
I agree, something like floating through a feeling without really caring how specific it is.
Yeah. . You nailed it.. I think that's exactly how everyone feels when listening to the song
If you listen very closely to the original track, you hear Paul is "singing" the bass line as opposed to playing in on his "Hofner." Youll hear him, "doom" or however you would spell what hes singing. You can tell by the "intonation" and the "attack" on the notes.
I heard this while my head was between two stereo speakers listening to the "White Album" laying on my floor in 1970..."Wow" I thought..cool. Nice version by you! ✌
Barry Feterman I noticed that too. It keeps the song simple
I love this song! Story time: in high school, I had a ridiculously all-consuming crush on this girl named Julia. That "I Will" and "Julia" are like back-to-back on the White Album track list seemed like fate. And yes, I made her a mix-tape featuring those songs...
Wtf dude your kidding right ?? I had a crush on this girl named julia too in my college summer class this year. And " I will" and " julia " are my favorite songs and remind me of her. Though I also listen too weezers pinkerton album a lot too but that's still crazy man! What a coincidence...
And I also have come up with few tunes about her, though they are not like these songs but still I had made up tunes for the first time because of her.
This is my favorite song by the Beatles. I’ve always thought he was lonely and waiting for his special someone to appear. And he would do anything to get her, for example: wait a lonely lifetime. But sometimes people try to relate a song to themselves. Maybe I did that.
Edit: I’m the 69th comment!
I agree. I think Paul was searching for his true love. I don't think it's just a gimmick. I really think he has been looking for her and won't stop until he finds her. It appears in so many of his songs and love ballads, especially in his later songs. He will place in sometimes just one line in a song that makes you know he's still looking. In this song, I Will, he just comes right out and says it, "Will I wait a lonely lifetime, if you want me to, I will. If I ever met you, I didn't catch your name, but it doesn't really matter, I will always feel the same." So, it sounds like that he's talking about a true love that he's been waiting for a while in this lifetime and may have been with in other lifetimes. Where is she? Why can't I find her? Will I have to wait this entire lifetime, if you want me to, I will, but where are you? Can't we meet earlier rather than later? I won't marry until I find you and I haven't found you. Does it get anymore romantic that that? And, because he wrote these heart felt songs, it was easy for female fans to imagine that they were the long, lost true love that Paul must surely be looking for.
@@anneteller3128 Yes, I too think the lyrics are more honest than just made up: and even though he hasn't found her yet he's always loved her. It's like a song of eternal love, and this could easily come out corny, but to me it sounds sweet and even sort of philosophical. 🙈 ❤️
Love is as simple as can be. I think it's more than a western cultural element, its simplicity, expressed not only in this song, but all the Beatles' silly love songs, brings me the feeling of a perspective, a view, that love is universal; understood and practiced, in a way, by all peoples. It means that love is one of those rare things that unites us all, Just like breathing, eating and enjoying songs. Love unites us all in the same way it unites 2 people together, and that's beautiful, just like this song
That was very beautiful. Thank you.
This song is so underated, it's just so tranquil and theraputic. I love the vocals on it and the lyrics are beautiful. Also a great transition to another beautiful song "Julia"
Now THIS is a format. Put your covers a the beginning of the (Explained) videos. Genius!
Yea for the songs that I adore but don't have a huge story I felt that this would be more appropriate. Thank you.
Makes it harder to skip them, though.
Your narratives are very well written and interesting. I like the cover-first-and-last format too. This was one of my first favorite Beatles tunes-it captures Paul’s great sense of melody and his innocent and romantic nature.
Can you make a Rocky Raccoon - Explanation?
Plasmidity Stupidity yassss
yes yes
Your such an awesome singer and your videos are so well made! Why don't you have a record deal yet!? Great Job!
Record deals are dead, we'll do it ourselves! Thanks man.
The day you hit it big, I call first dibs on your album. Keep up the good work.
Please explain Across the Universe. Or any other song. I really love your videos.
Clearly one of Paul's masterpieces in brevity and melody. Even though he was not known for his lyrics (a bum rap) these words are pointed and meaningful. Though he hasn't stated publicly there is a school of thought that he wrote this as a proposal to Linda. In that context the song is even more beautiful and timeless.
I love his melodies. I love this song at the first time i heard and before i know the meaning of the lyrics. this is the first song that introduced me the beatles. This song's still special for me. Simple but beautiful just like paul.
That was absolutely amazing ❤️❤️
I have always loved this song. The White Album came out when I was 12, but I didn't get this record until I was in high school. "I Will" and "Mother Nature's Son" stood out in their simplicity and purity, and the beauty of Paul's voice made them just perfect. Thanks so much for this video -- and especially dropping in that stunning image of Paul at 2:15. OMG what a gorgeous young man he was!!!!!
Fantastic singing voice! Keep up the good work!
Please do a video for Two Of Us. Also, just as always, really loved this one.
I Will is one of my favorite songs. I also love playing it on my acoustic guitar. Those are some hard chords but soo much fun. This kind of song is why the the girl fans go crazy it is what all folks want to hear. lol
I love this song, when I first heard it I fell in love with it!!!!
#LoveTheBeatles
This is crazy but my friend's neice is named Iwill after this song. I sang it for her on her birthday last year.
nice info. would love to see a video on 'Savoy Truffle!' :D
I love that song, I have this personal theory about it that is so strange it'll probably get flagged for inappropriate content.
Seems I heard years ago that it's an inside joke between George and Eric Clapton concerning Clapton's proclivity for eating a lot of sweets. I may be misremembering who exactly the song is aimed at, but basically it's a dental hygiene song. :)
TheBookDoctor ah interesting
The HollyHobs Beatles Explained haha the meaning I apply to it is when you’re on like a strict protein diet and all you can think about is when you can finally eat cakes haha, highly unlikely to be the real meaning obviously but that’s how I always think of it lol
TheBookDoctor I read the same thing as you did . Eric's fondness for the sweet pastries
My college (UCLA) sweetheart and I sang this to each other. We have now been married 48 years (and counting).
One of my favorite channels! Could you do a fool on the hill explained? always been one of my favorite tracks!
Your content is incredible, and as a lifelong Beatle fan I thoroughly enjoy your commentary and your covers. Keep up the amazing work!!
The most important line. "If I ever saw you i did not catch your name" /its not about being in love it's about the desire to be in love.
This is the ringtone for my husband on my phone. Sometimes it makes me cry, it’s so beautiful and lovely 😊
Paul sang the bass on this one:) Sounds cool.
Just beautiful.
Can you explain rocky raccoon
Firstly, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking time out of your day to share such precise, unique information on how The Beatles got their inspiration to write some of the best songs out there. Out of your videos, I have learned a whole lot that I normally wouldn’t have paid attention to. Secondly, “I Will” indeed is a song very close to my heart; I can relate to it with nothing but a crush I have, but the simplicity of the song makes it that much prettier and easier to relate to, no matter how simple the backstory may be.
Thanks again for sharing; your dedication to making such amazing videos and to The Beatles in general is greatly appreciated! Keep up the good work and have a great day! :)
I think of this song as more of a promise to one's self that you will be true in love and that you will always wait for that person who fills your life. To me it's about staying loyal and in love with that dream than any person in life.
Let us be honest here the White Album is the strangest, intriguing,
and yes...spooky,from not only of their canon of but anyone else's -
don't believe me?
Listen to it in its entirety (in the dark,), then Ringo singing goodnight in the end is simply genius...come on, would t you agree?
Peace...the Walrus is dancing
I performed this song for a friend's wedding many years ago. I believe Paul did this one by himself in the studio playing all the instruments. Just beautiful.
Ugh Paul and his cuteness
Monica Geller: I know!!
Right, I know! Like "Helter Skelter". Just pure sugar and sweetness, even though Charles liked it.
Beautifully summarised Sir. The simplicity of the words and universality of the subject, married to that magic melody and you have one of Pauls finest. Takes me back to my art student days, discovering the abundant riches of the White album and falling in love for the first time. The optimism of this one captures that time for me perfectly. Immaculate version too. Wonderful stuff.
Beautiful song that translates to people everywhere. That’s why we love The Beatles 🎵♥️🎶
These are amazing videos
Love the snappy transitions. This song is so beautiful that it makes me forget about how high the tensions were during the sessions of this album. 'Love You To' explanation please. :)
This and happiness is a warm gun, my favourites of the white album
Since she was a tiny baby (she’s now 2) I always sing this to my granddaughter when I put her to bed. This and Goodnight from the same album. It always settles her right down.
Its a pretty typical Paul song, he should have worked harder on the lyrics. It wasn't what you said, a song about meeting someone. It's a song about a hypothetical someone that he hasn't met, but boy is she going to love him because what else could she do? He's so awesome. Yeah, I have a Canadian girlfriend too, Paul.
I always took it to be about a love that Paul hadn't met yet; "For if I ever saw you/I didn't catch your name/but it never really mattered/I will always feel the same" and the part about "And when at last I find you". This always reminds me that it took a while for Paul to find his muse, as he once said he and Jane Asher never really "clicked", which gives me hope if I'm ever down about this stuff.
That's exactly my interpretation! Also (a really sweet story), Paul supposedly first met Linda shortly after the song was written (but before the White Album came out).
@@bradwilliams7198 Yes! I've always thought this was an intuitive song about Linda!
One of my favourites !!
I guess it reminds me of that dreamy feeling you get when you first fall in love.
This was the first song I ever learned. When I was a child my mom would sing it with me in the living room. My love of music came from those afternoons we would spend. The simplicity of the song also allowed me to Identify the feeling of love, so I guess my concept of love will always be somewhat connected to the song.
will you do any cover from ram???? it would be amazing!
The lyrics don't hit me as much as the music. The music is just... a feeling on it's own. It's extraordinary. Paul and I have the exact same opinion.
Could you do Julia? Also after you do beatles explained videos, will you do explained videos of songs in their individual careers. As for what the song means to me? Well, when i hear it i imagine a 18 year old john, looking at a picture of his mother, and humming the melody in his head. I dont know why, to me it reminds me that even though john was a rocker, straight rock n roll, he still possessed the same emotions as all of us, it goes to show that just because what you portray to people, doesn’t really and respectfully show who you are as a person. Just my own interpretation
:)
Keep smiling
This song is an amazing love song. Nowadays there are hundreds of silly love songs but this is the masterpiece. Very few artists could bloom their feeling through their love songs which Paul McCartney did. All of us can feel the song while we are listening to it. Isn't it so? You (reader) be the judge.
Thank you.
The first time I heard this song I was completely mesmerized. I probably listened to it at least 10 times that day
So my connection to this song is through one of my favorite books, Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac, where the main character (and amnesiac)'s best friend (Will) is in love with her and has this obsession with music, especially the Beatles' White Album and this song was explicitly mentioned as being a song he liked, so I listened to it, for the first time. To me, this song represents the best kind of romantic love, that which blossoms from friendship. Thanks for the amazing video on this song and your cover too. Awesome job!
What are the odds that this song was stuck in my head before I even knew that Hollyhobs even made a video about it? (Of course the song was stuck in my head only a couple minutes ago, not like a year ago or something)
great video as always! my sister and i watch your videos and talk about them together every week. i forget how it started exactly, but we call you nightwing, because we didn't know your name and you forgot to say it in that q&a video. although i think nightwing suits you. anyway, best wishes and have a good thanksgiving!
I think this song is more than "just" a love song; it is a friend song...one can never have too many friends, REAL friends. My best friend's first name is Will; this song is like John's word-play (to a slightly lesser degree, Paul's as well): his name & the verb. I was checking the previous notes & they say "4 years ago, presumably when HollyHobs first posted this. That's OK though; just like The Beatles, your commentary (dare I add, my feedback? lol) is timeless.
100th comment
I picture Paul daydreaming about Linda Eastman (knowing Jane was not working out). Probably thinking of his meeting with Linda at the Bag O'Nails in 1967 and Sgt. Pepper launch party a few days later. He left Rishikesh in March 1968 and met up with Linda again May 1968 during a "last minute" trip to NYC to promote Apple. John returned to England and invited Yoko over. Paul had his "dirty weekend" in Los Angeles with Linda before inviting her to live in England after Jane gave him the boot and later he gave Francie Schwartz the boot sometime in September. John and Yoko were a thing by then so the compitition was on for Paul to find his someone.
For unexplained reasons, this song has always been to me like one of Rumi's love songs to the divone. Not about romantic love but about that love for the truth that everyone who has veen on this pathless path knows well. Today I learned he wrote it while they were on spiritual retreat and I go, ahh. The simplicity of the song is perfect to carry spiritual transmission, for the truth is always so simple. So profound abd yet so simple that it goes unnoticed by most.
Well said!!
HollyHobs, Simplicity? This song makes absolutely no sense to me! It's all gibberish! The melody and chord changes are beautiful but as is always the case with Sir Paul, his lyrics are usually pretty bad! I'd like to know what lyrics Donovan and the rest came up with! Raul.😐
Really reminds me of the poetic straight forward brilliance of Eliot Smith. Obviously influenced him greatly. It's heart warming to think one particular vibe of song writing could go on to make someone so one off as Smith.
First time saw Anil singing. Anyways, nice singing bro.
Love from Kolkata, India.
While this isn’t my favorite Beatles love song (that honor goes to George’s “Something”), it is hands down my favorite one that Paul wrote.
As for what it means to me, where do I begin? There was a girl I knew in middle school that I had a massive crush on (at the time, I thought it was just a passing thing, but… here I am over 10 years later and I can’t get over her). However, I never told her when I had the chance, and by the time I was ready to, she had moved out of state. I’ve spent these past years trying to figure out how I’m going to tell her, if I even should, and every time I think about her, this plays in my head.
In fact, hearing your cover made me think of her again. I even cried a little bit because you sang it so beautifully
So the Beatles did this song 67 times in the studio! No one would guess that, for such an apparently simple song. What perfectionism! What professionalism!
Well this song is very scary, it was sung by William Campbell aka Billy Shears the one who replaced James Paul Mccartney. I will stands for I William , search and youll have goosebumps
Your way of singing is like a child who has just gotten candy or ice cream, so happy, so flowering. Your tone is like a spoiled child to his parents. Even though what I know is the song I will by the Beatles inspires longing for his lover wherever and whenever he is, holding back an unbearable longing. I think this song must be sung with a deep feeling plus good guitar playing (although I realize you only sing songs without playing instruments).
Sorry for my honesty, hopefully all of you can be better.
I first heard this song recently and it is my favorite Beatles Love Song. I was a Beatles fan so how did I never hear this wonderful song before. BTW Alison Kraus does a wonderful cover of this song I like it better than Paul's.
Along with Till There Was You, I Will are my 2 very favorite Beatles songs, and I never tire of them!
The huge amount of takes was because of the guitar parts they couldn't get perfect. They wanted a certain sound and they soldered on until they got it. This happens when recording if you are doing it properly.
Really nice intro this is my Gfs favorite Beatles song you just got yourself a new sub
Look at the chords.. Almost identical to Dream by the Everley Brothers
Sorry, you are singing wrong notes 3:21 "we're together" should be f natural but you sing close to an f# - your intonation in that area of the song is poor!
Could also be a religious song. Will I wait a lonely lifetime ?. Who are you hoping to meet after it's over ?
It's a song for a woman he hasn't met yet - and perhaps never will. It's quite deep.
Paul is a lelf-handed so...you’ve held the guitar the wrong way
Can you do a "Why Don't We Do It In The Road" explanation? Do WHAT in the road?
one of my favorite songs.
I relate very much to this song, it was my favourite song after meeting my second husband whom I knew later in live. We played it at our wedding. It meant to me the fullfilling of a lifetime’s promiss. I knew this song from a much younger age. I meant not the same to me then.
It was like this song always was there as this love was there, dormant in my heart until I met the one man that Made it resonantie inside me.
Sadly he died but this song is still my song to him. It is still a promiss for the time I will join him in the afterlife or in a new life.
Love you forever and forever, love with all my heart.
Love you whenever we’re together love you when we’re apart.
And if I ever saw you the song would fill the air
Sing it loud so I can hear you
Make it easy to be near you
For the things you do endear you to me
Al you know I will
And of course this song meant to me, this is how I love you, and this means, I want to marry you,
ah, you know I will
You can easily understand that this song is a great comfort to me in my grief.
Thanx for the explanation of a song so dear to my heart.
I will dance to this song when I get married. Perfection.
this is my second fave song for the white album
When I listen to I will I gives that feeling I wish I could share it with someone one day
Who here wouldn't want to listen to the other 66 takes? silly question
Can u do Two of Us
Or
Dig A Pony
Plz?
Dude I wanna see your guitar playing cmon now
I WILL I am William, "Paul" is tellin us
I said recently on Facebook that consciously or not, I thought Paul was channeling spirit in these lyrics. Another woman commented that this was the most beautiful interpretation she'd ever heard.
“ I will”. Classic PID. I am Will ( Bill )...........
Aaahhhhh!....Man.. love your explanation to ONE of my favorite songs from Paul..this song always took me to a dreamlike state that I never wanted to leave...simply soooooo BEAUTIFUL!!!...Sorry...but can't say eloquently how much I appreciate your work on these videos...just recently found your awesome channel thanks to Societal Revolution..THANK YOU!🎼😍
Can you do “Why Don’t We Do It in the Road” it’s like the polar opposite of this haha.
I have come back to this video tonight, the one night I have trouble sleeping. It's now 1:15am, and in a couple of hours it will be 14 years since Mum gained her wings.
I know I have your videos for comfort and company if I can't sleep through the night. Thank you for them. I may only be one little subscriber in the UK, but it's important to me to voice my appreciation of your work. I can hear my mum in the back of my mind saying "it doesn't take much to show someone you appreciate them".
One of the most beautiful lyrics from Paul. Wow... where does that come from.....
Well, I'm not a good singer but I sang this song often, but only for my wife Elizabeth. We were married 48 years until her passing. It really was love at first sight. I didn't even know her name but it never really mattered, I always felt the same.
As you said, the song lyrics show love in all its simplicity. Makes me miss the few magic and unique moments that I lived. As for the future ... I will do my very best to continue loving life and everything this fast passage may provide me. Cheers from Rio de Janeiro.
I do not have any explanation for Paul's lyrics, but wow this guy here really does a wonderful version singing it.
I always suspected that the lyrics of I will be were deliberately simple, almost trivial. Thank you for confirming my theory
You will what!
I'm curious as to where you did you're research. it's very fascinating listening to these stories as if John or Paul are telling the story. interesting video and would be an interesting read. please keep making more of these just like this. I liked the singing, stories, explanation, everything. great job
But why/how didn’t he catch her name?
I guess it doesn’t matter, as Paul says, it’s about the feeling.
Still bugs me though.
To me, it’s a love song to your soul mate before you’ve met them. Knowing they’re out there and feeling the love you’re waiting to give them (will I wait a lonely lifetime?)
@@belfrybb That makes a lot of sense, thank you.
I have a song for each of my kids that’s just their very own. My third son I was in laybor on and off again for two months. It took a lot to stick it out. This song is so sweet and makes the same promises a Mom makes so it was perfect as his song.
