Sometimes you just need to be in the right mind space to truly appreciate something. Ive done this with loads of albums that I love, giving them a couple of tries before all the pieces come together
i remember when this album came out, and I started listening to it while walking through school, and being so mf hyped about king kunta and alright, headbopping my way through the hallway
I’m not a rap fan and even tho I’m still not that big on it personally as much as rock and classical this album literally opened my eyes at how interesting and musically intricate it can be. Like for example the pseudo narrative this whole album spins is extremely compelling metaphorical story telling and kinda made me tear up looking into the backstory and symbolism of what it means (I know who Tupac was but I wasn’t invested in rap lore until I listened to this album and didn’t know how much of a big deal his musical impact and death was and the whole metamorphosis symbolism of caterpillars and butterflies is really just beautiful stuff man) Took me multiple listens to appreciate it and for that I’m thankful rap deserves so much more academic and critical respect amongst musicians than it gets. Personal favorite track is how much a dollar cost cause of those sweet as hell suspended piano chords and muted trumpet in the background it’s such a vibe and fits the cover photo perfectly. I’m convinced no matter what type of music taste people have this album has something for everyone to like about it even a staunch music theory guy like me.
