- In this video I'm going to be making Hardtack, the ultimate survival food. Hardtack was carried by the American Civil War soldiers, Napoleon's soldiers, The American Revolutionary War soldiers and more. It's good for backpacking, camping, or to put back for emergencies. It'll be around long after you're gone if it's prepared and stored correctly.
Ingredients:
3 cups of all purpose flour
2 teaspoons of salt
1 cup of water

Love the Bible lessons, makes me feel like I'm not alone in this out of control world. Thank you.
I realize your comment is two years old and so I hope you see this. Please know that you are NOT alone! There are many of us out here and we stick together! God be with you.
@@Kev-3006 thank you. Even though it's 2 years old it still is comforting to know that you aren't alone. God bless you
I remember when I was little, my aunts who had a farm in Kentucky had a root cellar for food storage. At all times they were sure to keep a 3-year supply of canned fruits, vegetables and meats. When I asked why so much, my aunts told me it was because one never knew when famine may come or crops would fail. Now, at 69 years of age and living in these times, I completely understand this wisdom. I love your videos and especially your Bible reading and discussions. God bless and keep you and your loved ones.💕🙏🙏
I wish we had 3 years, we only have 1 year and our small garden failed in the Texas heat and drought this summer. My grandmother always had several years put up also. Smart ladies.
Same with my grandma! We would put back rooted veges in boxes, canned jars up on the shelf, etc in her root cellar. I watched everything she did when I was little. She taught me alot, and I do the same with my granddaughter.
I had never heard of this. I wish my grandmothers were still alive so I could ask them about it. Thanks for the education.
Thank you for sharing the Truth during your videos..
Thank you, Becky! Ihad heard of hardtack but never knew how to make it! Thank you also for sharing the Word of our Precious God!! You are an inspiration! God bless you dear girl!!!
I have never made hard tack. I'm going to add this to my preps ! Thank you dear for the great video!
I am a Cook for a Civil War re-enactment group, been doing it for over 30 years now, I began many years ago frying my hard tack in bacon fat, which is something just about every soldier & battlefield cooks had on hand with a lot of bacon, grease & hard tack, frying for a minute or 2 makes the outside crust much softer with an easier to bite crunch to it & the inside soft, & the bacon grease gives it an excellent flavor especially when adding a couple of spices, I got this idea from an older Lady I met on the battlefield at Gettysburg once with our group camping out & she showed me a letter that had been passed down in her Family for years, one of her relatives that fought in the war had written home to his Wife & mentioned the food they ate, including the hard tack & he said it could break teeth, but many began frying in bacon fat which made it much better to eat.
Thank you for loving our Lord and voicing the Word of God, and cooking lessons. Love and blessings.

You are so right about being deceived and studying the Bible to be prepared. Thanks for sharing with us. I appreciate your insights and your recipes.
I remember taking an US History class and our professor (who was also a Civil War reenactor) bought this in for everyone to try. It was interesting.

Grew up with Grandma's hard tact in the 50's and 60's. We would visit once a month and her treat for us was hard tact with lard and sugar on it. Grandparents came from Sweden and were loggers.

Glad you like them! Thanks for watching and God bless you!

This is almost like our communion bread we have at our Brethren church. It might be exactly like it. My grandmother used to help make it for our communion service. Thanks

If my people, who are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14
I read a pioneer cookbook where women would mix as much flour as possible into the dough. Then they would scrub their back stoop to use as a surface and use the flat of an axe to pound more flour into the dough. Hardtack was placed in a bowl and boiling water was poured over it to serve as a hot meal on the trek West.
Thanks for sharing this info. Noah was a prepper!
Thank you for your Bible lesson and encouragement. I am going to try making hard tack and sealing it with my vacuum sealer.
Thanks for sharing God’s word. I just got your Cookbook today, love it.
EXCELLENT SHOW!!!

Thank you for watching, commenting and being a part of the Hillbilly Kitchen! God Bless You!
@@TheHillbillyKitchen thank you for your words
Hey what’s going on y’all... hope you’re doing well today... Thank you for sharing your videos...❤️☮️
Boll weevils is what they skimmed.... And I love your channel even more now ma'am!!
I have never heard of hardtack before. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for allowing the Lord to use you in the making of this video.
Salt attracts moisture. My Mom wouldn’t put salt in her pie crust for that reason. You don’t miss the salt. Pie crust is excellent.
This food is essentially for survival and salt preserves it, the lady explained all this
I never heard of hardtack very interesting. God bless
thank you for the tutorial. Best regards, Nancy
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE YOU! Thank you so much for your faith in God, my sister in Christ. Our nations foundation WAS a Christian foundation and until we solidify that foundation in CHRIST we will continue to spiral out of control.
Great information and message, loved your video!
Thanks my friend ❤️💗❤️💗❤️
I like looking up different recipes toake HardTac bread. I used
2 cps of all purpose flour
1 1/2 tbsp of salt
And 1 cup of water
The main factor is making sure you dry out the bread
You bake it on 375 for 30 minutes and then flip the tac and bake for another 30 minutes or until its dried out then let it cool for about 15 minutes then package it up or eat as you like it.
Thank you😊
I really appreciate the Jesus talk between the cooking, thank you and more please.. from canada
I enjoy your videos!
Love your channel, and you are such a good example of how to react in a positive and Christian way to your loss of Bret. I wondered if I heard correctly in your "hardtack" video about having to go through the tribulation? As Christians we won't have to, but will be taken up beforehand in the rapture. Maybe I misunderstood what you were saying. God Bless you and keep up the wonderful channel.
I love how you share truth
Nice...
Thank you.
I have seen a couple of your videos but not yet subscribe. Your channel is interesting . May the lord bless all his children.
This is not the oldest recipe in the world, But, we can find hardtacks made several years ago, still in edible condition. It is the longest lasting recipe.
My Grandma’s basement looked like that
Canned food lining shelves
Mom said to Grandma “I never understood why you do all this”
Grandma said “ because there will be a day when the Government takes everything
We will have something to eat”
Is there any reason against flouring a wooden chopping board to put the dough on ?
I love the tips about the pizza tools. Thankyou :)
Roll it on parchment, put on pan bake, breaks apart easy. Flour as you roll out dough.
Can you use a dehydrator….god bless you and your family, been going thru very hard times physically and financily
Very interesting recipe, one minor thing, while there is flavored matzo on the market. Kosher for Passover matzo is strickly flour and water made under strick rabbinical supervision.
Just now watching. Very interesting video...gotta try just to see how it taste. Really like your dough-docker & pizza cutter, where did you find them? Thank you for sharing. Bless you!!
This is really deep
And you believe what my family and i believe deception is happening as we speak. Israel became a nation 70 years ago....there's Alot of flags...we need to store food and be physically and mentally ready to support God and others
Hi dear sister I know this is old I haven't been on the internet for a while but I always remember you pray for you since you lost your beloved husband. My husband and I are going to make some hardtack that's why I came over on your Channel today today we always go to the Civil War things in our 38-year marriage not anymore but used to miasmas gotten bad now but just want to tell you. I have studied and time Bible prophecy eschatology but now I think we're living in a time right now where most of what is in the far part of Revelation as Believers we should not be here for it😊 but you and I know that the main thing is Jesus said we were to be ambassadors for him and so what I tried to do and I'm sure you also will share repentance and Believe In The Gospel when we get a chance. And because of what's going on in this world right now we all need Jesus the what the unbelievers and the Believers we all need Jesus to we breathe our last breath we need Jesus. I just want to tell you I like the way you shared it with people what you said spoke volumes especially for right now 2023 God bless you remember I'm always praying for you
God bless you and your family Becky. Thank you for sharing this with us. I wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas. I know its gonna be tough, but Jesus is the reason for the season, as you know well... Try to keep the focus on Him. I pray for healing and comfort for your hearts. Much love to you sister. 💖🌟🎄
Question...
I’m wondering about using some buttermilk powder in...also, have you ever added any herbs or spices for more flavor? How well will that store? Or even onion or garlic powder?
So glad i found your channel. Been watching a while now.
Where did you get your HUGE container of Himalayan salt?
Love your videos! Living on just SS, I fully prepped by using my cc's. I use to have only $0 balances on them, because to me, cc's are for emergencies. NOW is that emergency time. I can always make monthly payments. But, there may not always BE food and water to buy. And that may be soon.
Don't worry about those coming days ahead. If you are born again you will have already been taken up in the clouds with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. God is not going to leave us here to have to suffer through that torment. After all, He sacrificed his only begotten son to give us eternal life. If you are born again your eternal life has already begun here on earth. Thank you Father for your mercy and grace and thank you that you will never leave us nor forsake us. Amen and Amen! ✌️❤️✝️🇺🇲🙏💟
Could you do this in a food dehydrator?
We do desperately need a revival!
Thanks so much for all the info on this type of bread--Nice to know we can make some survival foods on our own--
Thank you! I am going to be doing more videos like this one.
Thanks
Enjoy, Melinda!
survival food . Bread and Gods word . What else do we need.
i love this video!!
my daddy loved hard tack candies... i do as well ..
This is awesome Ty for sharing!
I'm sure you have made the 100 year old potatoe candy
tater candy as my hubby calls it lol
Thank you for blessing us with our Good Lord's word!
I'm guessing, if you freeze your flour for a few days first, that will kill any weevils or their larvae. That's what I do before storing my flour or meal in seal a meal bags for storage.
Have you ever made portable soup? I saw a video on it. I thought it might be good with the hard tack. I have not found out the shelf life of portable soup. But I am looking. Thank you for your channel
Do you use filtered or Distilled water to help keep it free from chemicals?
I try to use filtered water in everything I cook. Water shouldn't have an aftertaste 🙄
Becky does the temperature of the water matter or alter the way it mixes? Ps I thought your new fancy backdrop (bluescreen? Greenscreen? I'm too much of a Luddite to know lol) but I thought it was effective!
It just occurred to me why the dough was so sticky in the video. The water warmed up while I was setting up cameras. I usually use cool water and it warmed up before I started the cameras. Great question! Ice water would probable make it very hard to mix, warm water makes it sticky, so cool water 😊
It is a green screen. Bret's creativity is in overdrive 😃
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR SHARING YOUR BELIEVED AND RECEIVED INSIGHTS, CONCEPTS AND IDEAS FROM ALMIGHTY GOD WITH ALL OTHERS WHO ARE INTERESTED IN LIVING SPIRITUALLY AS WELL AS PHYSICALLY IN AND THROUGH CHRIST JESUS OUR LORD AND SAVIOR, BY THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN US, WHO ARE CHRIST FOLLOWERS.
I wonder if a few minutes in the freezer might help the dough release from that waxed paper?
That is the first time I ever had it stick. It was probable because I was videoing. You wouldn't believe the stuff that happens when you turn a camera on.🙄
Could you use a linen type cloth to roll out the hard tack dough? I have done that for pie crust. You can just wash the cloth to reuse later.
Good advice about saving up and putting things aside for a time of need. Too bad our Federal workers don't heed that advice--they couldn't even make it a few weeks. Considering their average salary is over $80,000/yr. it is pretty sad. Our pastor is preaching on the 2nd coming of Christ and he says that it could be any day now. The point is that we need to be ready, no matter what comes.
I was led to you today. I am thankful. I have a question fir you. Have you every made them into dumping size?!
