It looks like an impressive model. All the paint and details on the engine are fantastic, the wheel-slip is rather clever, the smoke coming out of both stacks was amazing, the crew talk was well done, and I liked the swinging bell My only criticism is the engine has several different whistles on it. It’s either just sound decoder error or maybe there were other locomotives running in the background with their whistles blowing the same time as this one, but that’s just me. Overall, I think the positives outweigh the negatives!
The crews had radio communication in 1900-1910? How'd they do it? It's actually unrealistic. MTH did period specific crew talk much better. But if the wheel slip turns out to be a reliable mechanism I would take this model with the swining bell, despite the lax lanyard, over the original MTH any day of the week!
Is the whistle steam working? This is a beautiful model but I bought the MTH version many years ago from my father's hobby shop and it rivals this new version in detailing with the exception of the back up light on the tender which I think is a nice addition, just hope it is prototypical.
@wolf_among_sheep7875 I've owned many Lionel engines, and none of them had two whistles playing at the same time lolz. Go to the time stamp, they're not switching the whistles, there are literally two playing at the exact same time
@ryantaylor3278 that second sound you're hearing when the whistle is going is the (metal binding) sound file they add to all engines, it's more noticeable on Lionel's ES44's, definitely not a second whistle sound. I call it the weeeeeeewooooo sound
Technology that Lionel has developed that's notoriously unreliable and fails. Then you can't get it fixed, and you're stuck with an engine that goes for over $2K and can't get it to run.

It's not worth spending that much money for what they want for it, and having this engine fail. That wheelslip feature will come back to haunt everyone who made the mistake of buying this engine. Just wait and see. No parts were made available to fix this nightmare, and the warranty is already halfway expired since Lionel's warranty actually starts the day the engine leaves the factory in China.
Most likely no damage will be caused, because the wheels don’t have traction tires and will do no real damage to the track, it’s like a postwar engine going in full speed

If you can afford it then AWESOME. I just can’t put the money they want into engines like this. It’s a very beautiful engine.

Lionel now allows you to choose whichever whistle you want. I certainly prefer the default whistle but to each their own. It's a fantastic model!

Waiting for the Halloween version to arrive. The engine is totally fantasy but sick. The entire design is flat out incredible

Looks as though it lacks a substantial amount of detail to me, but I am used to brass locos.
Just a beautiful locomotive, Wow!!!! Such a shame that it has to run on that very un-scale 3 rail track.

This was old MTH tooling! So MTH did have the technology to build it and they did. They sold the tooling when Mike Wolf wanted out of the business.

The whistles are poorly synced with each other as the engine and tender have different whistles playing simultaneously.
The engine and tender do not have different whistles, they have separate smoke units that are in time with the sounds!
